Honda K24 Engine Build: Tracking Every Dollar Spent

- This video I summarized what goes into building a motor, specifically the K24. I also went through all of my billing statements and totaled up the cost.
Torque it down, torque it down, torque it down.
Trying to increase the pace on the video and also trying a new thumbnail design.
Thanks for watching.
"If this engine ever blows up, you'll never hear from me again"
This is exactly how i feel about projects like this
great video I love how the internet decided it was "cheap" to do a kswap my turbo build into my civic is at 15k and its not tuned or anthing and the engine is just vct and oil pump otherwise stock
You are correct, there's a lot of hidden costs and I was hoping to provide a resource to help people realize that.
$15k for a stock k into a honda? What's wrong with you? That's the price to swap a into a nice rear drive miata or rx8.
My honda 2004 CRV is still running like a boss. Wouldn't think the engine is 12k USD though....I just drop the oil once a year and slap a new filter on it.
Lol its not, your crv is the low compression, mass produced version and is about $600-700 for a low mile Japanese replacement. The high compression 200hp stock k24a2 is only $850
Honestly impressed that you managed to build it in 8 minutes
K24 build speedrun challenge.
This engine build was beautiful and extremely honest, also a great learning point for anyone, and the video edit and total was a lot of work too, great job and amazing video editing!
You did this all yourself and was rather expensive . , this is an honest look of cost to pass on , no bs like some other k24 builds . If you get 7 years out of the engine , break it down and get another 7 .
It was much more than I thought it would end up. Hoping I get that much out of it. I went with a kswap because I figured I can transplant the motor into so many different cars
probably had an estimate in his head, got close to it and had no other choice but to continue
Today kids, we learn why all our favorite content creators do sponsorships, promotions, and have merch stores.
Appreciate you sharing, though. 😎 Saw another RUclipsr do this with his Mustang. $30K, leaning hard into budget options. This is one expensive hobby.
@BruceWayne-sz3thwhat's the reason behind "just getting an s2k" instead? Curious as to your logic
@Nick Adkins Some people speak without thinking. It's either spending 11.5k to build an engine(to be fair he went above and beyond) or 30k on a car
Someone pointed out that I forgot to add connecting rods, $450.93. This brings the new total to $12,012.83. Yikes.
Edit: Pretty wild this hit 100k views, I did not expect that all. Thank you everyone, hopefully this trend continues.
Man, thank you! Im currently k swapping a 87’ supra and you just gave me the whole blueprint for this engine thank you!!
@@robertowolfgomez3661 Good luck!
@@IGDesigns patience is all thats necessary
Holy s**t
@@robertowolfgomez3661 DOCUMENT THAT, I used to own a 88 and a 92 both 7mgte and manual.
You'll get a ot of hate from the community but f it bro, DO IT!
This is the perfect video. Straight to the point, detailed, educational, and high quality. I don't even have a Honda anymore or any car I would do an engine for but I still loved this.
Wow very kind words
I'm a Honda O.G and LOVE Hondas/ engines etc. BUT the GRAND total is INSANE! It was built nicely and meticulous. But there weren't any real over the top parts involved for that Grand Total to be so HIGH. SHEESH
That's what I'm saying. It's just dumb to spend that much... For what? You can build and boost em for cheaper lol
@@XL3BIGDrizzyThen why is it that expensive? It's mostly stock. Were there parts that didn't need to be replaced in fact replaced?
@@shorty______ $350+ on a oil pan dude. Did he need a $500 ported oil pump? Of course not.
@@adamlannerd1408 that's true tho
Man congrats on the build! The price is insane tho when you can get a crate engine for around the same price with only 5% of the time investment. However, the experience you gained is invaluable
He could have saved so much. But the engine is really nice so he did well.
crate engines dont always come with all the accessories around the motor. It's usually just a bare motor.
All this money in performance parts and work but no porting work done? That poor engine has a ton more HP to show for .....
I think the lesson here is that if you want "budget", don't crack open the engine (except the basic phaser and oil pump/pan modifications) if you can help it.
“If this engine blows up you’ll never hear from me again “😂😂😂
My cost came out to the same cost, however I'm not sure why you were charged $1340 for new valve guids??
My thoughts exactly. Unnecessary to begin with. He got fucked.
Wow I have always wanted to do a fresh build like this but you're making me rethink all that. I spun a rod in my KA24E and and toasted the crank. Sent the block in to get cleaned, decked, bored and honed. Got new oe style oversize pistons, bearings and crank.
Rebuilt it with the old parts that were still usable. Total was about $1600 including the machine work.
See this is more like it 😅 yea your not using Gucci top shelf parts but id bet if you left your motor stock with a mild tune it would put up pretty similar numbers and last just as long as the videos motor
$1,600? You can pick up k24a2's for under a grand...
That was a very satisfying pace of information, thank you for appealing to my short attention span
I too have no attention span
Way too much spent for an NA motor, I got a 2013 55,000 mi SI for under that (pre covid), I'll be starting a build too , I have the TSX head and cams $100, will build a fresh turbo setup , hope to be around 7 k
You started it yet? Good rule of thumb is whatever you plan on spending on a build double it. I doubt you'll be in it $7k or less by the time it's all said and done with and tuned.
so , how's it going?😁 Did you give up or are you already at 14k?
Did you tune it yourself ? And if not, how much did it cost and how much power do you put down ?
Also, very cool build !
He got it on a dyno at 248.1 hp
Content this well produced and only 1700 subs. Untapped talent. Nice work 👌
Little tip when using plastigauge on the bearings, good practice is to use the old bolts, on some engines the bolts are torqued to yield, meaning they stretch when fully torqued to spec. You'll have to buy new ones when you want to assemble the engine if you use the new ones!
I’m sure he already knew that
Would it have been about the same budget wise to buy a crate performance k series?
performance crate k engines go for about that price 11,000-12,000
@@joshuachang4300if that’s the truth, I might just go that route, no screw ups and prolly comes with some kinda of warranty
@@Greengoblin0481but they are a crate engine. Meaning you literally just get a block and a head. Nothing else. By the time you do all your accessories, fueling, exhaust, clutch etc.. and get it to where he has his engine in the video you're gonna be knocking on $20k's door....
I built a monster 383 SBC for my camaro recently. 568 hp 531 lbft tq NET hp (measured with all accessories including hydroboost) perfectly streetable on 91 octane. My grand total was 11k CANADIAN with brand new heads, full new forged rotating assembly, the full suite of machine work on a 4 bolt main block and an excellent carb. The engine will take about 950 hp and roughly 8k rpm extremely safely. All that's required for boost is swapping the heads for larger volume combustion chambers. The carb is blowthrough ready and an electric fuel delivery system was included in my 11k total. I can achieve roughly 23mpg on the highway if I tune the carb for a road trip. I like the k series engines, but that price tag is not it man. There is no way that k24 is sitting at even half the hp of my 383. I love honda, but that price to performance ratio is not it.
dyno run says 250 hp
Can rebuild an LS motor for even cheaper: cam kit, ring gap, high volume oil pump, LSX intake, and boost.
But K24’s are Hondas big blocks.
yeah but its a camaro
What ive learned from this is i highly doubt i will ever build a kseries motor it was properly built but honestly for that money i could build an Ls engine with triple digit hp and have it be reliable.
This engine cost as much as a good condition CRV or Civic with a K24 in it
Need a sprinkling of Clarksonism in the title. *THE MOST EXPENSIVE HONDA K ENGINE... IN THE WORLDDDD, no seriously* 😐 The voiceover was really well written and nicely documented. 👍🏽
This MR2 needs more POWERRR
@@IGDesigns 🤣
Hey! My attention span is not short.....
Oh look squirrel!
$12012.00 for the motor and $30k for diamonds to keep it all running smoothly
That's brutal. All of a sudden a 4 pistons motor or a crate K20C doesn't look all that bad.
😳 just be glad you’re not married, because you wouldn’t be for very long! Man, lots of work has gone into this and it’s a great reference for anyone (me) planning on doing the same…. But you know the next question….
How many HRRSSPRRRRSSS?
I’ll be better on updates, I promise. So you’ll see the numbers soon enough
Great vid...but you guys need to learn how to put your women in their place if you worry about what they may say.
Sheeesh, I wouldve thrown in a K24A2 and sent it. The K20A2 head doesn't flow that much more to warrant me to go through a full build. Just throw in some cams and a Type S oil pump. Grab another K24A2 to build while cruising the above
We live and we learn, right?
Good honest video.
God I love junk yard 4.8s that just want a cam and nitrous 😭 if it blows go get another one for $400 😂
I mean he bought the 2 engines for $300 and $200 and I'm sure they would've ran just fine with a standard refresh. But he literally replaced EVERYTHING with oem parts or upgraded name brand aftermarket parts. If you did the same to a 4.8/5.3 your cost would also be several thousand dollars.
There's something beautiful about watching an engine being assembled. Especially a K series, one of my favorite engines of all time. CL9 TSX is what I have.
Rapid fire torque wrench clicks are very satisfying lol
If only you put that money into something profitable. Like Russian Table Tennis betting.
I build SBC engines for my race car and they cost me close to $3000 a pop
It's impossible to beat chevy small blocks in price/performance, not even close lol
And if this 3ngine blows up you'll never hear from me again 😆 🤣 😂...yeah man 11k.
He said he forgot to mention rods in the video, so it was actually $12k 🥴
OMG, you put it in an MR-S!?? AWESOME! just sub'd
Projects like this are extensive and costly. As a home Diy guy, I consider to remove and replace engine with warranty for the budget and time friendly option. Although, It's good to experience the fruits and joy of labor. Expensive fruit, lol. Thanks for sharing.
It wasn't going into a honda. He bought the engines either online or at a junkyard. There is no "warranty" for what he's doing...
I'm offended you called out my short attention span.
I bought a new Accord, 2004. We put 384,000 mi on it. Never once did it let us down. I’m an oil changer type. Castrol 20w50 it’s whole life. It got severely abused toward the end, driven months with no one even raising the hood. They ran it completely out of oil 5 times. Since it was still in my name, and they didn’t want it any more, I went and got it. Still have it. Sad ending to the best car ever! Thanks for the video !
Simple but great video, earned a Sub
Thank you
Was debating on k24 or LS swapping my 280z,…. Think I’ll go ahead and LS swap once the original motor dies
LS swap would definitely be the better option.
A stock k24 is $850 and will do 220whp fbo or handle 450whp boosted reliably stock. This video was overkill on cost.
thanks this helps me with what I need for my build, did you buy most of the parts oem from your dealership parts department?
I bought most online. I only went to the dealership when I needed something by quick. Dealership markup is way too high
@@IGDesigns thanks, so many bolts I need to buy it adds up haha
Yup, adds up quick. I broke two bolts in pretty critical areas and after that I bought all new hardware.
One decent solution is to head to the junk yard and get some OEM bolts and just clean them up. I've got some bags I hold onto.
@@IGDesigns are these unique bolts or what
Beautiful build. You did it correctly. But you could have bought two complete JDM k20a type-r with trannies for less than that.
Yeah but it was fun. Also people can use this as a resource to decide for themselves.
@@IGDesigns what did it dyno? I have often daydreamed of building a k24a1 into a 12:5:1 beast, but after seeing this cost break down, it is far more expensive than i dreamed.
Once again, Beautiful build, thanks for sharing.
@@musshwins412 I got a video up but 250hp to the wheels. That was conservative too, with a stock valvetrain.
Please kindly make a for engine building for Honda civic Type R. 2016 engine upgrades for track use
thanks for accommodating my short attention span :D
Great video, love the style and honesty. I’ve been thinking about a mr2 spyder project, this is inspiring. Keep up the good work.
You could have just purchased a brand new K24A engine, fully built, with a turbo charger for the money you spent.
You could probably have bought a brand new k24 for half that. Hell for another 6k you could've gotten a complete hellcat setup with pedals, control packs, wire harness, engine, and blower.
Am at step numero uno. Pulled the motor off of 04 TSX for 350. Completely gutted it down and cleaned. Almost scary to think the total cost to rebuild these motors 😊
I have never built an engine, but I'd like to rebuild an engine, is there a book or source if info where all the info I.e. torque specs, lube locations, etc. When I was younger we had Haynes manuals as reference.
$11K engine, rusty half-shaft...
Sand it? Primer/paint? Powder coat? Nah nah nah. Rust is the new black.
Ehh. Buy K24 with good compression. Could buy 20 of them complete for that $$$.
Honestly, I just seen a good used C6 Vette for $8K. I think I'll go that route. Thanks.
I'm building a cb750 and my rods alone cost $1200, cuz, ya know, Carrillo.
It cost me $22,000 to build my sequential RB27 in my R34. This is a deal for sure
Dang... That engine looks like it came right out of a Honda factory in Japan.
This video made me feel bad that I'm a certified master honda tech and I still ugged and dugged most my motor... Great job on the build my man
Boomers watching this: “Ya know it’s worth even less now that ya put all that aftermarket crap on it, don’t ya boy?”
I’m Building A 7th Gen Accord Come Check It Out😮💨
Don't worry the Supply Total is just about 185 bucks
🙈👍👌 furz trockenes Video, geil. Die Kosten sind galaktisch.
Dankeschon, aber ja, sehr teuer... 🤷♂
Only 6 Grand more then it cost to build my Boosted D16z6 Vitara setup in my 99 ek coupe lol
Sounds like a drinking game, where you drink every time he says spec/specification😂
You should really disable interlacing if you are using sony vegas to edit, that's what is probably causing those lines when anything moves on the screen.
I’m using Resolve to edit shot on a Sony zv1. I honestly am learning as I go with filming and editing so I will look into that setting. Thank you
@@IGDesigns either way it should be an interlacing setting, could even be something as simple as 1080i (instead of 1080p, but I'm not familiar with resolve.)
@@--LZ--- Thanks, I'll look into it.
$12k for building a K24? Lol. Junkyard, here I come.
So basically if you aren't rich don't even attempt it, are there any other Honda engines that are worth building that are cheaper?
Was this rebuild for high performance or just a rebuild to get another 20yrs out the engine?
The price went up after you said torque it down smh I'm never building shit
Whats sad is youve spent so much money on rebuilding this k series.... and you kept everything oem.
Thank you for this guide im about to do a k swap on my EK and this is a nice idea of how much im gonna be spending
Maybe people want to have their own life instead of watching you. That might be the reason too for your perception of a limited attention span.
Amazing and informative video. Hope your Channel blows up and that k24 doesn't hahahah
$11gs??? Should have just bought a spoon engine. 😂
No S***, I stopped the vid at 29 secs to write this comment, instantly want this guy to be my bud
Shit I’m scared to calculate the money I’ve spent on my build.
Retirement? very funny you think society will last that long! haha!
That's way too much for doing it yourself. That's crasy
Is your girlfriend still with you ? I am between rock and hammer too
I accidentally read the title as “i spent all my money to build a k24” , would i still be correct?
If you used all genuine Honda parts it shouldn’t blow up or fail.
Where the fuck did you got all that money, holy fuck...
How does that compare to a new Honda manufacture in cost/performance?
Since u did it yourself, price is not that bad, because what kills u is labor cost
U paid alot for parts . if u just look for good used parts u can find everything
I missed the part where you need to apply honda bond, can you play it back?
New drinking game. Take a shot every time he says Honda Bond.
The end was so funny! If I blow this engine, this will be the last time you hear from me! 😂
Great job on the video... I knew my videos needed help, you gave me something to look to for making better videos. Thank you.
Money......what about time learning. Dam nice job
Just bought a 2013 civic Si with ct engineering supercharger, crazy car but it bought me here eared a sub and like Thanks
grinding the wrist pins for barely any difference in balance made me cringe besides that it seems good
I hope you and that K will have great and long life ahead
My first project car taught me to triple the estimated cost and double the amount of time 😅
I have a k24 in my 08 tsx and considering a rebuild as it’s 225k miles now, and I can swap it into any other project later since the tsx is not my daily now and it’s so damn heavy for these engines… at least stock anyway.
Is your TSX burning oil?
Is it really worth rebuilding when you can pick up low mile Japanese k24s for $800-950? Only worth it if you're doing a high comp e85 NA build as a stock k will do 450whp boosted reliably.
that engine cant blow it’s basically brand new and u couldnt of assembled it better and after all it is a honda
Such a great engine. End of an era. 😢
I don't even have a k24 engine(b20b), but the fact you showed detailed step by step was really cool . As someone who is soon going to have to replace my piston rings, I wish you had a video of start to finish of that. I know it would be just as amazing as this one. I commend you for all the time and effort it took for you to do all this, as well as the making of this video. Well done Sir... well done.
I have more in depth videos of each step, including installing pistons
Dude there's plenty of B series info out there, don't be lazy and search for it, it's only like 25 year old engine.
Burning oil? Have you tried adding seafoam to the crank?
As long it makes you happy and is your passion, I don't see anything wrong with the cost. Just be sure to plan your retirement well.
PS - I was like you in the late 90's with my 1991 Eagle Talon Tsi awd. Fully rebuilt, low compression motor and all the water works. Pretty sure I spent well over 15K on it. It's somewhere in the junkyard. Good memories though.
not even building a k24 but I learned something
