yes 10+ years ago Sony had a slo mo trigger system on their camcorders, continuously saving about 2 seconds of motion. No longer supported.

Great video! Not many options at a reasonable price, huh? For cameras that aren't specialist slow motion devices: The Black Magic Ursa Mini Pro 12K can do 4K 240fps for a lot cheaper than the V Raptor, but it's a significant crop:
8192 x 3408 up to 160 fps
5120 x 4272 up to 160 fps
6144 x 3240 [18 to 145 Mb/s]
4096 x 2160 up to 240 fps [8 to 65 Mb/s]
Sticking with BM, the Ursa Mini Pro 4.6K G2 can do 300 FPS in 1080 in BRAW. Come to think of it, the GH6 hits 300 FPS, too. I remember you shot some glorious footage with that a while back. Worth an honorable mention?
Other than that, I think you covered everything. Bleak landscape for slow mo solo operators. Guess the solution is to get rich and buy RED, or wait a few years for the tech to show up in hybrid mirrorless bodies. Maybe the A7SIV can save us. Or the A7SIII will get a firmware update . . . lol.

Jared's channel posted a video in which two leaked specs were announced. Nikon is coming out with something that has 600-ish fps for $3,000, and Sony's A1ii will have 960, for $7,000, that is, if the leaked specs are true. I have the Sony FS700, which I bought new for... I forgot... maybe $7,000, which goes to 960 but at a lower quality. You can get it used (don't get the firmware update) for $1000 or so. I am going to run my footage through Topaz Video AI to see if the extreme slow motion can become astounding, but the 480 fps was a lot of fun. I promised myself a Chronos, but perhaps more cameras will appear on the market.
HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro phone does 720p 1920 FPS, and with in-phone frame interpolation it can generate all the way up to 7680 FPS. I’m about to buy one used on eBay for $400. The phone can’t get google apps but can transfer files via cable. Best pocket sized budget slow mo. Can probably do some decent res upscaling after the fact too.

Casey! You’re forgetting about the old school HFR king! The Sony Fs700. Terrible ergonomics but it has the ram needed for HFR.
Don't know much about the fs700. But quickly looking at eBay there seems to be several different models does that slow mo capability applied to all the models?
Done very well! You may be interested in Multi-View HD Pro 2 that can play GoPro (and other cameras) videos in slow mo (.05xframerate) in multiple angles - without having to render and you can do this in sync in virtual real-time using its multiple players.
I think a dedicated high speed rig would be cool, think about it: a epic slow motion short film focused on say...chipmunks?

Blackmagic ursa mini 12k does 8k 120 and 4k 240 (super 16 crop). Changeable lens mounts, built in NDs, etc. Seems like no one uses this thing but it's really appealing for the price and I know you secretly want it.

12:12 you just use any DSLR lens and stick an E mount adaptor on them. Most of these lens (except Nikon) have a mechanical manual focus ring.
Most F-mount Nikkors have mechanical manual focus rings. Maybe I'm missing something. I am after all just a humble photographer.
Aperture/iris might be another problem with non-cine lenses.
What i desire, is a slow motion dedicated video camera, doesn't have to be 4k, just 1080p and clear enough, at 960-1000 fps, that isn't limited like a phone to only 2-3 seconds, or 0.5 sec with unpredictable time it will start recording like my s21, but can record for like 5-10, or heck, even longer onto as much GB ddr4/5 based cache as needed to store the video on before it dumps on the sd card.

a6700 240p is pretty decent but 1.4x crop (4k/120 with 1.51x crop) and only in good lighting condition, its a little cheaper than x-h2s, but if u are building system from scratch with no lenses, then probably h2s is better way to go.

The Phantom Flex 4K you see them using for Shark Week slow motion breeches are insane. That being said, they're $100k-$170k, so they better be.
Smartphone use wide angle lens.
Those high end cameras for commercial grade shoots that require high resolution 4k or require view from long focal length including macro shoots.

So, I'm looking into getting back into shooting video and stills. I do have some previous experience, with some things more than others, so I'm not completely clueless, but it's been quite a while, and I am trying to refresh my knowledge, and gain some more. I know enough to know what I need refreshing on, in general, but when I have specific questions, all I see in the usual places is broad conversations that don't really address my specific questions.
In this case, my concern is what would be the better camera settings when shooting vlogging style walk and talk selfie shots, where I'll potentially be moving through different lighting conditions, my goal will generally be shooting on a super wide angle lens for ultimate depth of field, and where other than using a flip out screen for framing, I probably won't have much ability to make adjustments in the moment. I obviously want the best footage I'm capable of, but for the purpose I have in mind, I'm probably not going to be pixel peeping, and good enough will suffice. I know there's no simple solve all answers, but I'd appreciate helpful input from anyone with relevant experience and knowledge.
I know not doing everything in manual is a sin, and I will when I can, but I just don't see how in a situation like I discribed above, that it's possible. I'm figuring that I won't have much choice but to have to default to Auto Focus. For exposure, I don't really know. If I'm shooting video and want to maintain shutter speed, and ideally an appropriate enough f/stop to maintain a large enough depth of field, do I use shutter speed priority, and risk losing a workable f/stop, or set shutter speed and f/stop in manual and use Auto ISO? How much of a variation in ISO am I likely to see in say an outdoor situation on a sunny day between the shade and sun? Is it negligible without serious noise damage? Do I start by exposing for the sun or the shade? My other concern, is do I just default to Auto White Balance, or is it better to set a White Balance that will at least be consistent in post?

I'm doing wonderful slow mo on my galaxy S21 and GoPro 11. I just make sure that there is enough light 😉 with my selfie stick and Bluetooth trigger I get slow mo of the insects, that's very entertaining 😊😊😊
The wave looks good on paper but people say that it has issues with color and some kind of sensor issue.
Fs5 has great slowmo. The og Chris Harris on cars was filmed with that back in 2014 . It also had the 4 sec burst trigger available at all times, as someone mentioned it is not supported now or something. Maybe seriously look into fs5.

i mean i'd hope that the next gen of cameras improves on the framerate somewhat... I've got my trusty FX3 and don't plan on buying a 2nd body til they release a new sensor that significantly improves upon the one in it, w at least a decent featureset. i do wonder about the a7s4, like, i'm sure i'll want it, but then, will i get stuck in firmware purgatory, like u guys who own the S3? one half of me thinks i'll wanna jump on the first cam w w/e new sensor they (or another company, i can adapt my e-mounts and was moving to cinema glass anyway) release, but that's likely to gimme a lotta headaches.. i dunno. i guess we'll have to wait for sony to rehouse the 4, S3 and R5 another dozen times before anything major, anyway...
however in all seriousness, the way things are going i'd be surprised if Canon releases a better video-centric camera than Sony for less than 6k... why am i typing this. granma? u there?

The ZV1 super slo-mo is ridiculously short. The RX100 VII doubles the record times and it becomes more useable. Big part of the reason I much prefer the RX100 VII. The only time the ZV1 becomes desirable is for Product Showcase. For everything else the RX100 VII is first choice.
I choosed ZV-1 over RX100 VII because of lens.

I say you just shoot it in 720 P at 24 FPS and render with Topez labs video AI - superduper Slo-mo at 8K and just a couple of days!
EZ. Take burst mode pictures and intrapolate the missing ones with Topaz.
