    A couple things:
    - This video is not meant to convince ppl to all of a sudden like it now; it's just me trying to provide a different perspective that I've held. YT titles tend to have to be more confident and absolute than the video actually is. If you still hate it or don't like it, 100% fine and thanks for watching anyway.
    - I don't think Energon as is is good, I think that it's good ideas executed in a not so well fashion, which is what I meant by the actually story trying to be told is good.

It's kind of a mixed bag, when it comes to animation for the Unicron Trilogy. Armada has pretty good 2D animation, but has some unfinished parts. Energon has not so great CGI, but pretty good 2D moments. And Cybertron with not half bad CGI.
I'd personally pick Armada, unfinished parts and all.

Transformers Energon did a great job with the allied human character designs. Kicker had the best body armor ever made for human characters. It was sharp and sleek with a Gundam stylized helmet.

I honestly feel that Energon would have been better at the time if it was hand-drawn animation along with some of the dialogue getting tweaked. From as much as I've seen from the show, Energon is a better sequel than Cybertron because hardly anything exciting happens in Cybertron in regards to the action, while with Energon the action feels impactful due to how much of a threat the Decepticons are still treated as.

To be honest I would prefer in terms of story wise: If they did an mini arc on how the autobot and deception alliance was dwindling post-Unicron Battles, and after Megatron showed up. More on Unicron's mind once rebuilded he returned to his armada phase, he could've kept Megatron alive by slowing feeding on his hatred. Perhaps there should've been more of Hotshot's character development after armada, several more decepticon characters that weren't repaints of the original toy. The combiner teams weren't just ancient warriors, but actually a soldier project created by the Decepticons to rival the autobots superlink forms. We should've been able to see or learn of more Alpha' Q's planets, like are there residents? Oh of course Starscream and Alexis reunite, and Starscream's memories return, therefore he lives to no longer serve Megatron and perhaps the return to several of the minicon weapons, like the star saber and requiem blaster at least.

I didn't like how Demolisher, Cyclonus and Tidal Wave were handled in Energon, they at least could've built better connections with the Autobots and Humans after the events of Armada and even question their alliance with Galvatron which in my opinion would make them alot more interesting

  • @R0-83-RT
    @R0-83-RT 3 года назад +46

I think oddly enough one of Energon's biggest weaknesses is that it feels disconnected from Armada. Despite the characters being the same. This is most apparent in the Decepticons with Cyclonus/Snowcat & Demolishor being reformated and becoming less serious, "though Cyclonus was always a bit of a loon", Starscream becoming mindlessly obedient, and Galvatron now desiring to revive Unicron after he fought in a war to stop him. However, the concepts by themselves aren't bad as you mentioned with the superficial comparison to Prime. This makes me think Energon would have been better off as its own thing rather than a sequel. However, that would have probably put its reputation in a similar area to RID 2001. Being mindful of character consistency and continuity alongside building the ideas present in Energon would have been a balance that if done right could have made Energon a cult classic.

    • @Xeno-The-Wanderer
      @Xeno-The-Wanderer 2 месяца назад +1

Thing is, the decepticons as characters even in armada are consistent, Demolishor was really the only one who had the kind of depth regarding staying with the autobots or going with the decepticons. There is the misstep when he’s rebuilt but if there was a focus on how and why same with Starscream it may have been handled better. People thinking Starscream should’ve had shades of his armada self seem delusional, his resurrection was incomplete and he seemed to have no memories. An episode tackling the former relationship probably would’ve been enough but that’s all the attention it could’ve gotten considering the circumstances. Megatron’s changes feel close but corrupted, he is still an ambitious conquerer and seeing Alpha Q’s ability to control unicron thus sees that it’s possible to use a literal planet as an asset for his ambition not realizing the influence. Heck it’s basically a thread throughout the rest of the trilogy that unicron is corrupting Megatron twisting his ambition from conquest to become more destructive than ever. Energon shows the whole process with Cybertron’s beginning showing the end result as going into the sun and being reformatted again with Starscream between shows led to their characterization then due to Unicron’s lasting influence even in death.
I argue that the shows can work together but bad communication and planning screwed what could’ve been the greatest 156 episodes of transformers into being great for the most part but messy in many ways. Imagining a tighter trilogy mostly everything is there and that’s good enough for me to revisit it for over a decade compared to the rest of the franchise

Something I'm not sure you've mentioned yet (thank you bad internet) is that Energon's budget was not as big as Beast Wars/Beast Machines. So while it they're both 3d, one of them gets the edge right away.
There could also have been design philosophy differences between the companies responsible for the different shows.
And yeah as someone mentioned there's a lot of difference between Energon's English dub and the original Japanese. Funny enough, the same is true of Beast Wars English and Japanese dubs from what I've heard.
To keep the Beast Wars comparisons rolling; both it and Energon attempt to tackle some honestly mature topics; you could say that Animated does as well, and certainly Prime. The difference between Energon and them, like you say in the video, is the execution. Energon just falls flat on its face in a lot of ways from what I remember of the four episodes I watched of it.

I'll give Energon this: I'm glad it didn't forget about its human characters unlike RID 2015 that a had a single throwaway line about the children. And the roles they're given make sense like Carlos being in the space station and Alexis having a more diplomat like role because she always talked about perusing a career in politics.
Also I'm glad they didn't do something along the lines like have Alexis and Rad get married and have a kid being babysat by the Autobots like they did with Carly and Spike in G1.
With the exception of Billy and Fred of course but even the directors of Armada admit that they were meant to be written out of the show and it's not like they had any special connection to the Mini-Cons like the other 3.

Energon is pretty painful but the 2D animation was very nice, I will admit that, and honestly the initial premise was pretty good, unfortunately the humanity & cybertronians vs unicron plot was thrown out almost immediately once Megatron was revived

Yeah, it wasn't that bad. It wasn't great but certainly wasn't that bad. Yeah, the story line was good in my opinion. The animation often hindered the story but oh well. I like Shockblast. Yeah, you have made a great video based on your point of view and that is great. Anyway, great video.

Finally, someone out there willing to put out the truthful word about Energon. I honestly agree with nearly every single point you make.
And...I kinda sympathize. I was in a unique position as a kid. I grew up with a Dad who loves anime, mecha, sci fi, and especially Transformers. Ive been playing with those toys and watching G1 and Beast Wars since I was 5, and while I was alive for some of the greats when it comes to animation/toys, being the old RiD series with Skybite and Armada... I was a weird kid with ADHD and Autism. I didn't really register them. But my dad happened to torrent the pilot for Superlink, Energon in Japan, I was *mystified*. I still remember seeing Tidal Wave in the Asteroid Belt, seeing Kicker's Dad discussing what was Primus in that video, the shining light in that floor screen, and I was just...hooked. When it came out on TV, I was confused why it wasn't like G1, but I enjoyed it in a very kiddy way.
...And then I got to rewatch it in my late teens on dvd.
And honestly...I loved it more. Its not perfect. Its still very flawed. But moments in the show still hit hard to me. And, gonna sound weird... But I think the CG animation does work very well in some places. In combat, attacks feel weighty. The wacky designs can clearly differentiate characters, and even the mass-produced Omnicons and Terrorcins. Punches have weight, the transformers feel *heavy*, and the very stiff animation does work in very dramatic ways.
In the early episodes, where the Autobots see the aftermath of Megatron fighting Hotshot, just seeing him limp on the ground, and his disembodied arm *twitching*... Like, I have an Armada Hotshot toy with a weak shoulder socket that pops off regularly, and I deadass have childhood trauma from that scene.
There's the jerky animation with Inferno's internal conflict becoming external, theres the transformation segments and powerlinx scenes, and I love the effects used for Starscream vanishing and going all wobbly, it's great. It is shaky a lot of the time, but not all of it. It doesnt have the sort of fluidity of Beast Wars and tbh Beast Machines(it was the first mostly cgi tf series since then), but at least the models dont A: Clip into each other half the time. And B: Go so incredibly far into the uncanny valley like Beast Machines that they come out looki g like the in-between stages on an Animorphs cover. Cybertron did really improve on Energon's animation style, but the cg in Energon was a much needed milestone in terms of animation.
Also, I love the trope of "giant robots having to help raise a human kid", because Optimus really does try to be a second Dad to Kicker, and in that same vein, Kicker and Ironhide really do have a kind of brotherly relationship.
I do wish that Misha was more of a character, though. She has a lot of potential, and I wish she wasn't sidelined for a fair amount of big story segments, and that she got more development.
Sorry for rambling. Your video was fantastic, *your* cg animation looks fantastic, and thank you so much for making this video. You seem like a cool person, and if you read this, I hope you have a good day, and that your pillows are nice and cool when you next fall asleep. :)

As someone whose first interaction with Transformers was Energon, I very much appreciate this video. For almost 20 years I was worried my childhood show was horrible due to what I ended hearing from the overall TF community. However, my friends and I started a marathon of Energon, they've never seen it before, but they too heard people call it "the worst tf show".
When they watched it, sure, we laughed at a lot of the derpiness(Especially Prime telling Kicker he's gonna send him back to his mother), but they loved moments like Demolishor's character arc at the beginning, and Wingsaber's development, not to mention the conflict between Optimus and Rodimus where they both wanted to achieve the same goal but their methods were complete opposites.
Just wanted to conclude this comment by saying, Thank you for making this video, made me and i bet a lot of others really happy. 🙂

Energon's main sticking point is literally the medium.
What's worse is that when they do break out the ol' 2D animation, it's GLORIOUS 😍
Of course this was that time period where EVERYONE was jumping on the 3D animation train 😩 If they had just held off [I mean, the humans are already 2D!](and actually made a real 3rd part to the Unicron trilogy instead of hijaking another untelated TF series and repurposing it) we'd be set

Seriously tho I made an effort starting in 2019 to watch every American transformers cartoon. So far I’ve gotten g1, beat wars, beat machines, RID(2001), prime, animated, armada, energon, and just recently finished cybertron cause I got burnt out after energon (like seriously how many times can megatron go from megs to galv to back to megs in the next series then back to galv as if it never happened). I’ve seen the power of primes and the Netflix wfc cartoon so far. And IDW still beats all of it for me.
Also I would argue that execution is more important than concepts. You can have a simple concept executed excellently and that makes up for the lack luster concept

I’m in the middle of watching the series. I..honestly don’t remember watching it despite seeing portions of Armada and Cybertron. My 2 thoughts:
    1) The 3D animation is rough, the 2D is gorgeous, as others have said. But I have found the series quite enjoyable as I listen to it for work with little watching. Feels like an audio drama just without the narration in between dialogue.
    2) Man, Snow Cat is sooooo annoying. I’m fully convinced (idk if it’s actually said later) that Megatron messes with their brains when he rebuilds them. Cyclonus to Snow Cat becomes more crazy, and Demolisher feels like he forgot his connections to Kicker and his time on Earth and became hyper focused on Megatron.

I have to disagree, it's not the best TF show ever, but it's decent, I'd have no problem rewatching it just like anything else that's Transformers, it does have some unique aspects to it that make it stand out from other TF series. What's funny is that I was introduced to Bayformers and G1 before Energon (courtesy of my father who grew up with the original), while most others I've seen/met were introduced through the ladder. I found out about Energon when my dad bought one of the DVDs and brought it home. To this day, I am unsure if he thought it was G1 and bought it by accident or if he was curious about the newer show...
And to tell ya the truth... while I lean more towards SORTA disliking Energon, I still have a soft spot for it. My brother and I, even as grown, goofy a55 adults now, still quote and make fun of this show very regularly... and deep down it's a guilty pleasure to watch it [specifically episodes 33-36. Those were the only episodes we had on disk as kids, and I didn't have cable much growing up... so I often had box sets of my favorite shows]
Though, tbh, Energon is what opened me up to Transformers even more. Had it not been for Energon, I may have never found Armada, Beast Wars, and my two most personal favs, Animated and Prime. I appreciate what it brought to the table, and even though it's not my favorite, and CERTAINLY not the best... I still kinda enjoy it.
(Also, can someone validate my crazy love for the 2D animated, cell shaded scenes in Energon? Oooooh my GOD, it's just so... BEAUTIFUL! It just LOOKS so MMM!! The torture scene with Inferno was SO powerful when animated with so much LIFE and expression, and even the small tidbit with Ironhide and Kicker during "Crash Course", and Megatron being overtaken by Unicron? I love it SO MUCH! I only wish the whole series could've been animated like that.)

I guess the English dub based some clips I've seen of Energon were a bit overboard compared to Armada. I would agree on the animation as its fault but at that time I guess I was OK with it probably because of being exposed to the Zoids anime series back in the day. I get that they were trying to experiment and stuff but I guess it didn't worked well with Transformers. While some ideas were great along with new characters, some got sidelined or dramatically changed like with Starscream and others like Wing Saber got sidelined a bit after Omega Supreme. I agree that this show with have been better considering that this series as the homages to a lot Transformers characters.

The only interesting character in Energon is Misha. If Energon was re-told or if there was a new show, Misha should be the main human protagonist in a new Transfomers cartoon or comic because she comes off as more introspective, existential and altruistic. I can see her being able to talk to the Autobots about their overall place in the world and how fragile civilization really is. Hell, maybe Misha could initially have hold of the All Spark and gain the knowledge of millions of years of Cybertronian history.
If Kicker was to be involved, he could be a villain because despite how you describe him, Kicker comes off as an abusive boyfriend and a massive hypocrite by hating authority while simultaneously taking pleasure in hurting others, possibly siding with the Decepticons, maybe even the one who killed Misha's parents. In the end, Kicker becomes pure evil and Misha must kill him by cutting off his source of power (a mech, dark energon, whatever) and she can finally get some closure.
Misha doesn't matter because it's always about the Transformers but if she still deserves a better chance.

    • @mewmew2722
      @mewmew2722 Год назад

I love this idea. In my version. Before her death of cancer, Misha's mother, an archaeologist, discovered a mysterious crystal in a ancient Mayan pyramid and gave it to Misha as a 6th birthday present. Her father is an Energy researcher along with Jessica and Connor's parents and Professor Jones until the explosion on Alcatraz island. The explosion caused a shockwave reaching towards the trio and causing Misha's necklace to shatter into five shards Two of the shards went to Jessica, which allows her the ability of "Spidey Sense" and farsight, and Connor, which allows him also "Spidey Sense" and Super strength, and the energy inside the crystal went inside Misha, Which allows her to sense Energon deposits and see projects of Solous Prime, Alpha Trion Nexus Prime and Micronus Prime. What do you think of this one?

I honestly didn't mind the 3D animation for the transformers I thought it was neat when I was a kid I still hold it in the same light...well kinda I think it looks nice it doesn't feel stiff or clunky to me but that's just my opinion also...I never liked Megatron's robot form in Armada I think he looks fucking ridiculous

Frankly, when I looked back at the show not too long ago, it surprised me how mature the ideas were. And how interesting the parts where it landed coudl get. It's just the execution and production of those ideas were what made it one of the worst shows the franchise has put out.

I'm going through my tf marathon and I know energon will be on the list, but I do think a bit of a rewrite for the series including a bit of polishing up the script. It could be better, but I do have a story with kicker in my version of transformers. If you want to know more, I'm open for conversation.

Shockblast acts more like other versions of Starscream, then Shockwave.

Even now I see Energon as my gateway series to Transformers. If the localization team had been more careful and respectful with importing the show and not rushed the development, it could have been spectacular. The sheer number of inconsistencies, agressive push to make old characters assume new appearances to promote new and not always improved Transformers, missing or incompleted reels of content rushed in from Japan and the subsequently erratic pacing and dropped plots is mostly from a desire to roll out toys at breakneck pace. However, Energon got the double whammy of being squeezed into a 6AM weekday timeslot after becoming a magnet of criticism, and it came out right before RUclips hit the scene and the burgeoning online video player media presence made subs and the original Superlink more accessible. It's not the perfect show, but it got me through my nana's passing, and I'll be grateful for that.
