I was age 12 when I saw this performance on TV, and I fell instantly in love with Karen Carpenter. Her voice, loveliness, and playing the drums made this adolescent swoon! Cut to 1983 - and I'm driving home from work when I heard the report of her death on the radio. I had to pull my car to the side of the road to bawl. Now in 2024, my eyes still well up whenever I hear her. RIP Dear Sweet Karen.

They were not just a talented brother/sister duo, they were also important to contemporary music. Karen's brother, keyboardist/arranger Richard, was a pioneer in using layered, multiple-track recording to capture complex harmonies and musical arrangements. He was something of a perfectionist in the studio, and some of their recording contained dozens of layered vocal tracks. His techniques were emulated by many.

Karen Carpenter was a contra alto with perfect pitch. Most of the recorded versions of what we listen to were THE FIRST TAKE. And there was no such thing as auto tune. And, lastly, she never had a voice lesson in her life. What we hear was just how she sang...naturally. Her voice was about as near perfect as has ever been recorded.

I got to see them live many times and snuck backstage in 1975 to meet them. I played drums in high school because Karen did. My own sister's name was Karen. Karen could sing anything thing and her voice touched your soul. Not to forget, her brother Richard did the arranging/producing, sang background overdub vocals, and played keyboards. The great drummer Buddy Rich once told Karen that she was his favorite drummer! Time for more Carpenters songs now!! Try We've Only Just Begun, For All We Know, Bless The Beasts And The Children, This Masquerade, A Song For You, Top Of The World. The list of songs goes on and on, LOL.

Burt Bacharach is pronounced Back Her Ack. He wrote at least 500 songs, probably more. Karen Carpenter was and is considered one of if not the top singer/drummer. As far as female yes at that time very rare. Karen is untouchable as a vocalist/singer, in a class of one. This song was #1 for 3 weeks in the summer of 1970. This duo has sold over 150 million records and #1 selling American group of the 70's. Karen was just rated #1 singer on Sirius/XM 70's on 7 channel. Her brother Richard is a recording genius. Great reaction and looking up Carpenter history. "Goodbye To Love", "Superstar" and "Top Of The World" are just the beginning of this Carpenter journey.

I first saw Richard and Karen when I was 22 Karen was 15 and Richard 18 (1965) Karen had already studied under some jazz drummers greats. Joe Morello the drummer from the Dave Brubeck quartet helped her get the drum kit she used. They were playing in jazz clubs around Los Angeles as the Dick Carpenter Jazz Trio. Richard on an electric piano Karen on the drums and Wesley Jacobs bass and tuba. They won the Hollywood Bowl Battle of the Bands in 1966 playing "Iced Tea" which Richard wrote and "Girl From Ipanema" (Karen was not singing yet). Then they formed a collage group called Spectrum a sextet with Richard Karen and John Bettis, (who cowrote most of the music Richard wrote later) Leslie Johnson, Gary Sims and Danny Woodhams. They played the Whisky-A-GO-GO a number of times. then they seperated and Richard and Karen were back to Dick Carpenters Jazz Trio only with Bill Sissoyev providing the bass. They won the 'Your All American Show" (their first time on TV) in 1968. Karen was a killer drummer who could handle unusual times that most drummers could not and by 68 she was singing too. In the 60 and 70s Playboy sponsored a jazz festival every year. In 1975 Karen was named Playboy's Best Rock Drummer of the Year.

You know talent. Im in my 60s and remember Carpenters well. Herb Alpert heard Karen's voice on a demo in 1969 and signed her brother, Richard, and her to A&M records. Karen received 3 or 4 Grammys in the 70s and sold over 80 million records by 1982. She was 1975 rock drummer of the year according to Playboy. KC had the most beautiful voice-ever, and perhaps THE best female vocalist-ever, because she compels you to listen as she sings in perfect pitch to you, not at you, with emotion and enunciation. No auto-tune or gimmicks. No professional voice or drum instruction. She was known by the studios as 'one take'. She rarely, if ever, did more than one take of any song. BTW, Karen was the ONLY female harmony/background voice in all her songs. She was truly born with an incredible singing talent. Documentaries point out the accolades to her voice, such as, Paul McCartney said she had the most angelic voice after hearing her sing 'Ticket To Ride'. John Lennon ran into her at an LA restaurant and told her "you have a fabulous voice, luv". Supposedly Frank Sinatra stated that Karen was the only singer he'd pay to hear. I recommend songs such as, Yesterday Once More, Solitaire, This Masquerade, Need To Be In Love, Hurting Each Other, Only Yesterday, I Can Dream Cant I, Crescent Noon, Ordinary Fool, Rainy Days And Mondays, We've Only Just Begun, A Place To Hideaway, Goodbye To Love, and A Song For You. KC never knew true love. One of her few friends included Dionne Warwick. 5'3" KC really lost weight, due to anorexia, in earnest beginning in 1975. She died in Feb 1983 at age 32 due to heart complications from anorexia

Karen said she was a drummer who also sings. She preferred being behind the drum kit to being in front with the microphone. They called her One-Take Karen.

You need to take a deep dive down the rabbit hole of Carpenters immense catalog of hits. Continue next with "Superstar, "We've Only Just Begun", "Rainy Days And Mondays", "Goodbye To Love", "Hurting Each Other", "Sing", "Top Of The World" (and about a dozen other big ones).

Saw her in 1972. They opened the show with a cover of the Beatles' song Help (this is on RUclips). She was one of the best drummer/singers ever. Other songs to watch --Superstar, Rainy Days and Mondays, Solitaire, Yesterday Once More and Goodbye to Love. Karen was famous for recording songs on the first take.
