I bought a KDX 220r new in 2002, I still have it. I’m 61 years old and I got it out yesterday for a ride, it hasn’t been started in a year. It always fires up and runs great. The only problem is when I get it out I realize I need to get it out more often.
56 here. Just got a DT250 and an '01 KDX in the past year. Love it. Love them both for different reasons. Are you on your original piston? Mine's running Klotz 40:1, peace.
I've had an 02' KDX200 for 11 seasons. I'm a 6' 190lb woods rider, for my use the KDX is great. The braided front brake line, gripper seat, wider food pegs, and most of all forks and shock upgrades by Devol Suspension, Enumclaw WA. Worth. Every. Penny. Keep a close eye on the swing-arm and linkage bearings.
Wrong. It's clearly not a trail/ woods bike. The salesmen lied to you. It's only a motocross racing bike tuned professionally for endurance motocross racing.
Good to see and hear your impression/comparo. I found a 1988 KDX200 for $300, rebuilt lower end and ready to take it out on maiden trial run. Happy New Year!
@@Gma7788 Thanks for your unsolicited, assumptive comment. (1) I don't race so the KDX was meant to be ridden on trails for my purposes; (2) I didn't buy it from a dealer and the private seller didn't lie to me on how it was to be ridden or used. Now I have a KLX 300 enduro which tackles the trails I give it quite well.
1 power stroke divided into 2 small power strokes has nothing to do with linear power. It's not linear power cause the gearing isn't linear gearing. It's a RACING gearbox. It's non linear. Stop believing in male gossip.
Like your video. I now have a KTM 300XC but my riding buddy Mike still has the KDX200. Although the KTM is a better bike, I don't think it is worth the extra price. Both bikes are great trail bikes.
Thanks for taking the time to watch my vid.. And I'm sure that 300 is full of smiles every time your on it. Maybe one day I'll upgrade when they figure out fuel injection on them :)
one of the best bikes ever made for trail riding. i had a 220 with a pipe and muffler on it and i could stay right with 400 4 strokes all day long. generates great usable trail speeds. super easy to start too. watch 4 stroke guys kick their lungs out, then just stab at kick starter and go.....if only kaw had made one more generation of them...
I've been thinking for a while about adding a KDX200 to the arsenal. I'm a little bored with the DRZ400S. You think the KDX is different enough to be entertaining? Think it'd be fun to take on a 100 miles of street and dirt?
Nice bike , I'm in between buying a drz 400 or a kdx 200 , the only thing that worries me about 4 strokes are the high repair and more upkeep I've heard
+Joe Blo The two bikes are totally different. I have a 2002 DRZ400S. The DRZ is fairly bulletproof. I have had mine for a number of years and have had no problems. For dual-sport tiding the DRZ is better for trail riding the KDX is better - assuming you like a 2T. Both are great bikes though - just different.
I’ve ended up getting 2015 drz s model I love it, got a 93 cr250 but it’s a lil much for trails prolly sell it soon and get a ktm300 or kdx they’re just really hard to find right now
@@choke-a-koal657 yea in Ohio is where I am, about the same price , that’s why I bought that cr250 but it’s made to run not trail ride as it needs more air it seems
I will look for forward to your video. I was actually looking for a YX250 or KDX when I found my 250SX. My buddy loves his KDX but I think I prefer the 250SX due to its power.
Ride AMAP I was able to fine my 2006 250SX for $1,450. I've put some additional money into it converting it to a woods bike. It still is too jumpy for tight trails but I hope to get use it. There is much more low end on my SX than on my friend's KDX. In fact the SX feels like it has more low end than my DRZ400 just because it is so explosive. Finding traction is a problem though :-)
88Grossboy I think most of it was from the rotor guard although he said he did tighten up the steering head. He has been fixing up the KDX quite a bit since then and really loves it. He put a trials tire on it several weeks ago that works even in the mud to our surprise.
+Bob Swagger I have a second buddy that also purchased a KDX. He loves it. Now his brother is also looking for one. I still like my KTM more but the KDX is a great all around trail bike. (Both of my buddies like their KDXs much more than my KTM.)
I just bought mine! Yea me and a friend bought one now our friends all want one lol. Its like a two stroke disease. Luckily they have been pretty easy to find for sale online and for a decent price.
+Bob Swagger Congratulations. I'm sure you will have fun with it. Seems like it is hard to find one for a good price around here - Portland Oregon area.
I was actually accepted to a college there and was planning to move in August, but I changed my mind and decided to stay closer to home on the East Coast. I still think about all the trails I keep hearing Oregon has for dirt bikes though...
+Bob Swagger I think it is wise to attend collage not too far from home. I'm a fan of avoiding as much debt as you can. Although picking a collage based on great nearby trails to ride on might be a good idea as well :-)
It does not have turn signals but when my buddy licensed it, the DMV handed him a license plate. Under Oregon licensing rules it should not be able to have a plate though. He just lucked out. He has not mounted the plate yet though.
Ok thanks for the reply, I was just looking at getting one of these and was wondering if I was going to be able to ride it to the trails instead of trucking it there.
Yes, I like the KTM more. I have two friends with KDXs. They both would agree the KTM is better but at the same time, they might prefer the KDX for a less technical ride. The KDX is a great bike depending on what you are using it for.
Here is Oregon, a KDX will generally sell for more than a KTM 200 of similar age. The KDX would be cheaper to fix for sure as there are a lot of aftermarket parts and mods for the KDX. I now have two riding buddies with KDXs
We went riding a little over three weeks ago and I cracked a rib. I have been really slow editing the video. Hopefully we will get out again in a few weeks. Your last video reminded me of how small the KLR's filter is. I think I cleaned that filter more than any other bike. A dust cover would be a great idea for that bike.
It's not a trail bike at all. It's terrible for trail riding. This doesn't have linear gearing. This doesn't have linear power. It's got 3 different compartments to the engine. There's a smooth transition between the 3 different sections to the motor. That set of gears IS non linear. Clearly not a trail bike. It's lazy steering, Clearly not designed for trail riding. It's softer suspension, also Clearly not for trail riding.
I agree 100% but there are a lot of guys who love trail riding on these bikes. I think it is a good bike for someone who just wants a relaxing ride on fairly easy trails.

Linear power in a 2 stroke... who would have thought? That's why Dr. Dual Sport can ride his up ANYTHING! Good vid man!

No, it has not been raced. It is kind of tired and heavy.

I feel like I recognize that road. Is that near Prospect OR?
No, the road is in the Coast range between Portland and Salem. I've been lost enough to know that all of those roads look alike though :-)

What kind of coolant do you use in the KDX 200?
Sorry for the slow response. I'm not sure what he had in at the time. We both run whatever happens to be at our local Honda shop.
I use the Castrol 50/50 mix. Made for off road bikes with aluminum engine parts.
It's a trail bike... It uses creek water and piss.
It does everything reasonably well, and you can spend the difference on a wave-runner.
