- Bermuda grass and zoysia grass have their advantages. In this video, I do a good ol' comparison video to help you know how to choose the best grass for your lawn. I cover the pros and cons of bermuda and zoysia. I also take a minute to show St. Augustine and centipede grass. Bermuda is drought tolerant and spreaders quickly. It can be mowed low and is extremely hardy. Zoysia is much more shade tolerant and does a better job choking out weeds, but is not as drought tolerant. Zoysia can also be more likely to be damaged by a fungus and is slower to recover from damage of any kind. I hope you learn some tips to care for you lawn, so it can looks its best, regardless of your grass type.

Great video brother! Thanks!

Good morning brother so Indonesia🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩🤝🤝🤝🙏👈
“We had a lot of rain and I have a lot of fertilizer”. Yes. Lol
I have Zoysia, Bermuda and St Augustine in my
Central Florida backyard and Zoysia chokes them all out with little care. No pests, fungus, drought, shade tolerant. St Augustine dies back in.the.summer from sod webworms and fungus. Bermuda gets smothered by the Zoysia. Just throw fertilizer down a couple times a year and you are good.
Thanks for this comment I’m also central Florida and just got a home looking at grass to get and you made my choice for me. I like zoysia. Thanks
What kind of zoysia you running? Interested in shade, heat, drought tolerance.
suuuuure it does....
Have Meyer zoysia in front yard, Zenith zoysia in back … will definitely pay attention to this channel ! I spent a LOT of money on this … front looks great ! Neighbor says he feels like want to tee off from my front yard. … Zenith in back cause you can seed that, more shade tolerant, not nearly as think as front, but does look muck like “regular” grass (ie fescue).
Thank you. Very helpful information ❤
Do an April fool's video next year where you explain the difference between dirt/mud and grass and the benefits of both.
Personally I'm done with Zoysia (Zeon). It is definitely slow to establish strong roots, meanwhile it builds up a very thick spongy layer of rhizomes. That does definitely make it choke out weeds, but it is not pleasant to walk on. Fine blades but relatively stiff and pokey too. The thick mass seems to makes it a fungus prone moisture trap, and also tougher to mow - and it wants to grow vertically, so frequent mowing is needed if trying to keep it under 1.5 inches which is recommended. As stated it does not want to grow horizontally and is slow to reestablish bare spots. Switching to Bermuda (Tifgrand); much easier to cultivate, much softer blades, and a darker green. It's also a shade tolerant Bermuda variety.
Of note, I live in the tropics with no dormant season.
good info! thanks! E texas here. We just bought a house with mix augustine/bermuda. Def liking the burmuda
@@tjhx5413 I am in Winston Salem, NC and switched from a yard of trash grass and weeds to BlackJack Bermuda last year. I LOVE it. Beautiful grass. Bought a new house and now I will have more shade so I have to find a whole new grass to work with. :(
I live just north of Richmond, VA and I have grown Zenith Zoysia from seed and love it. We're humid, but the temperatures are typically peaking from 95-102 from the end of June through early August, and I typically add supplemental water once during that timeframe if I see any signs of drought stress. It gets full sun with almost zero shade, so it probably dries out a bit faster than yours in the shade. Looking back I may have changed to a slightly different seed type that has a deeper green, but I've the only warm season lawn around, and I get praised for it so often. Last year this really cute blond was walking her two dogs and talking on the phone, and paused for a few seconds to quickly snap a photo of my lawn before going back to her walk. That's probably one of my favorite compliments LOL. People will be nice to your face, but when they don't know you're watching and do that, you know it's genuine. As far as the price, I see that as a very minor issue, at least for seed. I planted at 1 pound per 1,000 sq. ft. and it filled in well, considering my weather pushed me back about 4 months and my lawn wasn't established enough by the first frost to use a pre-emergent. Any issue I have now, which were self-imposed spot killing with glyphosate when I couldn't properly identify the weed - I'd just use my plugging tool and transfer a few healthy plugs into the void and they would fill in fully in a couple of months. I don't do a lot to damage my lawn though. The plugging tool I use is on Amazon under the name - ProPlugger 5-in-1 Lawn and Garden Tool. It's well made and as long as you're not trying to force it through rocky soil, it works and should last for years. My Zenith is nice to walk on, and the kids and neighbors play in it because it's so soft to fall on and roll in, which was another great compliment from a 9 year old kid that didn't know much about lawns. They saw the work I put in and they would yell at other kids to be nice to my lawn because I put so much work into it. So much for an old grouch yelling at kids to stay off the lawn. The 9 YO was doing that LOL. Now, 2 years later, one of them wants me to teach him how to grow a nice lawn. They have a lot of shade, so I need to do some research on cool season grasses since they have so much shade. Plus they have the sibling to our 9 month old puppy on top of a heavily shaded lawn. Any ideas?
That is a great story of growing in your own lawn from seed. Thank you for sharing
Which grass is spikey when u sit on it?
Good to know about zoysia because my lawn is on a slope
Thanks for the video!
Good information thank you
Glad to help. thank you
@2:07 😂 On the bright side you might go viral.
He had me cracking up when he said that 🤣
Zoysia is very beautiful when maintained and established.
I have a Bermuda lawn. The shady areas of my lawn are solid Georgia clay. Can I plant zoysia in the shady areas where Bermuda won’t grow? Also what type of zoysia looks most similar to Bermuda? I would like them to look similar at least
I don't have experience with clay soil, but I'd suggest buying some Zoysia plugs. It is in excellent soil and already established, so you're starting off with perfect everything. Again, I don't know anything about clay soil, but if it is not too large of a patch, you could get a tiller and till up the top 2-3 inches of soil so it is loose, then remove it with a shovel and fill it in with topsoil. I bought a little Sun Joe tiller for in the $150 price range I think? A little more or less. Anyway, as long as you have the correct size extension cord (too small will burn up the motor), it would be perfect for jobs like this when comparing to the cost of renting a tiller from a big box store, dealing with the short timeframe to load, do the work, clean the machine, refill fuel and return the unit. It dug into my hard, dry soil easily 6-10 inches deep, so tilling shallow to remove the top few inches to replace with topsoil shouldn't be difficult. Removing by hand with a shovel...you'll give up before you get it done. The new topsoil will increase your chances of successfully establishing the Zoysia and helping it spread. Or you may be able to just spread some top soil over the area and let the stolons and rhizomes spread through that top inch or two of new soil. At this time of year, you'd still have a full growing season for the new plugs to thrive and spread. Being young Zoysia, I'd not expect a great deal of expansion the first year as much of the plants energy will be spent establishing deeper roots, but it will spread. The 2nd and 3rd year it will spread faster. I've heard from some lawn care professionals that Zoysia is the most shade tolerant warm season grass, so if it won't grow, you'll need to either expand a flowerbed, put down rocks, other plants that can tolerate that much shade, or remove lower limbs or thin out limbs to allow more light, or even cut down a tree, depending on your goals and effort/time/money you want to dedicate to this task.
Great video.
Thanks Tom Brady, didn't know you were in lawn service
Only in the off season
“If I do the video will be over.” 😂
Great video! What type of Bermuda did you use?
Let's hear it!
I think a crabgrass or dalisgrass yard would be hard to beat.
Lesson learned: Construction is bad for your yard.
got a question where we live in the Western Panhandle of Texas we are very dry and it gets extremely cold, would Zoysia grass due well bermuda struggles? it gets down to 10 degrees in the winter and some summers 110 green.
Could u mix Bahai and Bermuda grass ?
I live in the Memphis, TN area and have Zoysia in my back yard around the pool. The area along the side of my fence which gets plenty of shade is my best area of grass. However, the other side of the yard gets plenty of sun (6-8 hours now that a neighbor cut down a big tree which provided plenty of shade when I initially put the zoysia sod down).
Now that I get a lot of sun to this area, I'm getting dry patchy spots and wondering if you (or anyone) has any recommendations on how to keep this "sunny" area looking as nice as my shaded zoysia area? During the peak of the season, I water daily (sometimes twice a day if extremely hot). Any recommendations?
Good video! Thank you for the info!
Please, try to get a Gimbal to hold the camera. I was getting dizzy in the beginning of the video! Keep it up!!
What is the best month to plant Zoysia grass in Greenville, SC?
can you start with Bermuda grass and when it is up can you over seed with zoysia grass?
That would be challenging.
Yet another long winded, seemingly never ending video to tell you about 2 choices. Use the skip button or bring a lunch!
👍
Your eyes 🥰🥰
Question I want to hit my shade areas with zoysia aka 295 a pallet @ 400 sqft Bermuda is 155 my price same @400sqft per pallet I have a lot of shade in my yard but a ton of full sun I hate my neighbors and their trees question is do I go Bermuda or zoysia in my bare spots and have a blend til zoysia takes over ?
Also upstate sc area zone I think 7a or 7b can't remember exactly but both are similar
How do you tell the difference between Bermuda and Centipede?
they dont look anything alike up close
Where do you live? I'm in NE Oklahoma and have been looking for a grass that is both sun and shade tolerant. We also have drought conditions during the summertime, but I do water. Would Zorro Zoysia be a good choice for my lawn?
I think Zorro zoysia would be an excellent choice
I live in Etowah county, where do buy Bermuda sod for that great price?
I'm not sure what the sod farms charge in Pell City. There is a guy down near Harpersville who advertises for 110 per pallet
@@lawncarelife thank you, I will research it. There is a farm in Cherokee county but they want like 160 for a pallet of Bermuda.
You're a nice looking man 😍
The zoysia lawns in my neighborhood all look to be in dire need of some serious dethatching!
I love his videos but I have never seen one of his lawns look nice. Lol
If I get hit by a car the video will be over 😂😂
are you sure its zoro Jason? LOL
Zoysia is not resistant to insects nor weeds nor drought, and its speed of growth (repair) is glacial. Sod webworm, bill bugs, grubs, all kinds of weeds infest zoysia, it has to be watered a lot, very susceptible to brown area & all kinds of fungus, and Pythium. Other than that, it’s beautiful grass. SMH. If I had my druthers I’d have laid St. Aug instead, it grows fast & repairs fast.
I am in an area that is questionable for St Augustine. It can get damaged during our winters
@@lawncarelife I live in Florida, hence my “druthers” statement
Keep the camera still and get a close up. This video was not at all helpful!
