- Benedict Cumberbatch, star of BBC's Sherlock reads a love letter at Letters Live. Benedict Cumberbatch was reading the letter at an event supporting the Reading Agency (readingagency.o.... We missed the first couple of seconds of Benedict's speech but there's still more than 6 minutes for all the Cumberbatch fans.
Appearing alongside Benedict Cumberbatch at letters live were Gillian Anderson, Matt Berry, Nick Cave, Kerry Fox, Neil Gaiman, DBC Pierre, James Rhodes, Bruce Robinson, Peter Serafinowicz and Juliet Stevenson.
I could listen to him talk for days....
I think I have listened to him talk for days
His voice is what I want to hear every night when I dream.
Benedict gave the author such a distinct, honest voice. In my minds eye I could see clearly his character and mannerisms, his fears and worries, and the love that drove him as he sat writing this letter. Wonderful.
This is a wonderful and moving reading by a brilliant actor. The letters Benedict reads (by my father, Signalman Chris Barker, in 1944) come from Simon Garfield's book, To The Letter, published this October by Canongate and available from all good book outlets. Bernard Barker
What a beautiful legacy you have!
I sincerely hope he wrote it to your mother?
Absolutely!
Oh my gosh! Your parents' love story is so beautiful! I loved hearing their story, especially read by Benedict and Louise. I can almost imagine what their lives were like back then.
He's so... articulate. And the British accent...
***** yes. Harrow was not wasted on him.
yes. u are right.one can listen to that velvety smoothness all day! :)
His voice is fabulous and his articulation even better. No wonder he can do Alan Rickman so well...their voices sound much alike. Love them both.
Benedict is a very good reader. The words jump of the page and he gives them life. Also, the letter is moving.
Dreaming with his voice
I could listen to him speaking all day
me too!
This is going to haunt me for ages
This letter is the pinnacle of love. So much beauty in his words, to know what he felt during such a tragic time and how he survived with the hope of seeing his beautiful love. And Benedict reads this so well, truly expressing the words and not just simply reading them. I'm very intrigued about this book now!
I didn't like doing WWII letters and poems in school as it was usually depressing. But as I got older, I appreciate the common man's poetry in these words from homesick men desperate to cling to normalcy with their loved ones. Bless you Christopher and Bessie!
He has such a strong voice. That helps with speaking and really making the letter come to life. LOVE YOU BENIDICT ♥♥♥♥♥ ♡♡♡♡♡
Can I please just have an album of Cumberbatch and Hiddleston reading period love letters?
benny is amazing especially when he talks
Beautiful!!
my heart.................................. :c his words melted my heart
Started off great but got seriously muffled the last minute or so. I wish I could have been there in person but I live in Alaska and I rarely get such news of events like this BEFORE they occur...lol. Oh well, Benedict Cumberbatch is a lovely man and I hope he has a great 2014!!!! Stay happy and sane Benedict!!! Love ya!
Ben, why did you read the letter I sent you in front of an audience?!?
I teared up, that was fantastic and beautifully read, it was moving
wow, what a man................
First blush of love -- "Watch the buses as you cross the street." -- no matter how old (and bald!) you are. :-DDD
A brilliant, affectionate reading. Excellent. I look forward to reading the whole book

Divine And Wondrous!
It's a shame that the last part was muffled. :(
if he's not acting he should teach English Lit class or something, no one will snooze off
He would finish classes in 15 minutes. He speaks so fast 😁
It is hard for me to listen to that letter knowing it is not read to me.
You can imagine it. Unless I'm right and imagination is a dying art form in this day and age.
Charming
How I wish to be at the receiving end of that love letter from him.Sigh!!!!
