Thank you! I've been hearing this version of Lover's Cross in my head off and on for years and periodically hunting for it. Rocks my heart to hear it again. :-)
A great cover of the wonderful Jim Croce song. Madrugada -- is Spanish for the darkest moment before dawn. Great album title and typical of Melanie Safka -- who is still writing and performing today. I agree with another poster on this site -- this album is a must have Melanie LP.
Unfortunately Jim Croce died in 1973 (a great loss) and Melanie’s moving rendition of “Lover’s Cross” was released in 1974. I bought the 45 at that time and was mystified that the song wasn’t a smash hit.
I always wondered what Jim Croce thought of Melanie's cover of this song. She did a incredible job on it, one of my favorites from my girl. Love that Lady
He never heard her version. He died September 1973. His album, I Got A Name, that contained Lover's Cross was released in December 1973. He finished the album on Sept. 13, died on Sept 20.
I wonder if there is a singer out now that songs like Melanie? Her voice was so awesome and my God that face! I fell in love with her at first sight and and still in love with her. LOL To bad one of her daughters didn't get her voice and looks. They both are beautiful women but they don't have that earthy look like Mom had. Loved the picture of Melanie from the Madrugada LP.
I never heard of this song before it's weird the crap singers who become stars and people like Melanie make all these brilliant records hardly anyone knows
Thanks for sharing. I love Melanie and Madrugada is, imo, one of her very best. :o)
MADRUGADA is one of those, must have LP's by Melenie
I purchased a copy when this album was released. Still in pristine condition.

Her live solo acoustic version of this song is also on RUclips and it is much better, especially the vocal.

Fantastic album love melanie
Smashed this song legend
Amazing - I keep finding new Melanie songs that are just... don't even know the word, but it's something good.
Also covered by Country singer Holly Dunn
on 1987 second album, CORNERSTONE.
