  • Acoustic insulation and soundproofing go hand in hand but are NOT the same thing! You can't soundproof a wall with a cavity unless you use acoustic insulation, but insulation alone is not soundproofing.
The drum effect is a BIG issue in soundproofing. Luckily, the solution is simple and we build in protection from the drum effect in every wall, floor and ceiling soundproofing system.

Just ran into this issue. I soundproofed a ceiling by adding a layer of mass loaded vinyl, Sonopan and two layers of 5/8s drywall with Green Glue in between. I had high hopes for this level of treatment. The result is that my music from above still comes through it nearly as bad as before. I suspected the joist spaces were acting like drums. BINGO!
I should have torn down the plaster and lath and filled the joists with rockwool. Big mistake!
My solution now is to beef up the floor above so the sound doesn't even reach the 'drums'.

It's something that can be easily missed out if you aren't aware of it! If you're able to take up the floorboards, you can treat the cavity space that way instead.
