    Dear Joe, Big thanks from The Netherlands! I just fixed my ABS motor following the video's that you shared. I too had a intermittent ABS ETS ESP light GREMLIN. Before I got to the ABS motor I went to all other possible causes. This video was the last resort, the end of the road! Haha. I took the motor of, opened it and oh yeah, no more brushes left. I finally found the cause that I was looking for the last 6 months. I bought the brushes at the shop mentioned in your description and they send it all over to our small country! The time has come to sincerely thank you for the the video's you've shared about the Mercedes ML. Great work and keep it up!

    I listen to everything you said, bought a used abs system for my 2000 ml 320. I decided to try replacing the motor first. It was a pretty easy job, and it turned the three lights off. Thanks for saving me a good sum of money!!

      Joe , happy and safe new year, I need your help on a problem on my 2000 ml 320. Pulled instrument cluster to change lights, now the the driver side blinker doesn't blink inside but blink on the outside. Switched bulbs on cluster , still the same problem. Any suggesting? Second question , if I have to replace cluster , can is use a agm cluster from a m55 that year?I really like the looks! Cann't really find a clear cut answer .

    Good video for us that own old vehicles. :) Just one EASY thing to try if you have the BAS/ESP light on. Doing this will calibrate the system because it will not the full range of left to right steering.
    1. Start the engine.
    2. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the right until it stops.
    3. Then turn the steering wheel all the way to the left until it stops. (The light should go out.)
    4. Turn off the engine.

    I have just rebuilt my friend's ABS motor (2002 ML320). It cost me about $30.00 to buy the brushes, the bearings and the bearing puller on Ebay. All the warning lights are now off. Your instructions did work. Thanks a zillion times.

    Hi Joe - Just wanted to say thank you for the video(s). I had the 3 lights of death for a couple of years now and saw your videos and got inspired. I went to a local junk yard and harvested an ABS pump off an old W163. It was nice being able to practice removing the pump without the cap coming out. I actually removed the cap off a different W163 while there just to see what happens and two metal pins close in at the same time. Trying to wedge those apart and re-positioning the cap is a nightmare. I couldn't even do it with the thing in my hands let alone imagine what it would be like while still in the car. Anyways I removed my ABS pump and installed the one from the junk yard. I then replaced the lateral speed sensor which I also got from the junk yard of course, and after I reconnected the negative cable on my battery all 3 lights went out! Getting another ABS pump and the sensor cost me $30 from the junk yard. I like that I didn't have to mess with opening the ABS pump or brushes or soldering. Just wanted to say thank you for the great videos including the lateral speed sensor under the shift area. Worked like a charm!

    Thank you for posting this video, my mom has been "borrowing" my 99 ML for work because of the cargo advantages over her Volvo S60. The BAS/ESP light decided to say hello as she was coming home from work last week. My ML has sat in the driveway since. Knowing this was a potentially serious issue with stopping, I decided it best to park my baby. I finally gained the heart to begin researching the possible culprit(s) today. Feeling much better, cause I can easily fix my baby.

    Thanks for the video! It saved me time and expense. I have a 2000 ML320. I was able to go to a local pic-a-part and quickly remove the abs pump - especially easy as the fluid reservoir was already gone and I had access through the wheel well. I was able to take my bad pump off without removing my fluid reservoir and put the new/used one in and all the lights went off. Originally, I had all three BAS ESP ETS lights showing and I had the codes C1401 C1140, C1141. I first swapped out the brake pressure sensors for new ones and the lights would then only come on after I started driving. The ABS pump replacement fixed that. Options online were in the $200 to 300 range for a used or refurbished pump, and the pic-a-part place charged me $25.

    I fixed my 2001 ML320 with 240k miles ABS group lights went dark. !!! Great. Thanks to Joesnowmobile and MercedesMedic. Things went great until I needed a mini bearing-gear puller. There is not enough clearance between the bearing and the motor housing for a standard puller found in the local parts stores. Ebay had a puller but the shipping was 3 weeks from China. The brushes were available but only from China..2-3 weeks for shipping. Found some in Kentucky on Ebay. Bearing are easy to find size : 8mm x 12mm x 28mm. Take your pick. Reminder: measure how far to press the bearing onto the shaft during replacement; about 11mm. An Autozone three leg bearing puller does not work. No clearance.
    Prepping the brushes and soldering the copper braid is simply but requires some skill. Putting the armature back in is tricky to get it right. Replacing the silicone seal was tedious. I wanted to make it water resistant. The thin disk between the bearing and the housing is there to keep brush dust out of the ABS valve body bearing. Try to preserve the thin disk if you can. The best approach to access the motor is to remove the right front wheel/tire, remove the wheel well liner, it's right there. Note: when I removed the ABS motor body the armature/brush assembly separated and remained attached to the ABS valve body! But it didn't affect outcome. I drove the new bearing onto the shaft with a socket on the inner race.
    If you have doubts about this fix and don't have a friend to help it may be best to buy an ABS valve body-motor assembly from salvage (ebay) and install.
    It's not "easy" to replace brushes and bearings in my opinion. Doable yes. Replacing the motor is doable by most.... cybermechanic

    Dude excellent vid. I’ve got 2000 ml 320 and BAS esp was always on. Now the abs is screwed up as it does the petal flutter when I stop on dry pavement as if on ice. She’s also slow to hit 2nd gear too so I’ll be watching that vid as well. Got the car cheap and was real clean. Just had a whiny PS pump which I fixed and the window switches were a little glitchy, so got a whole new board for the buttons. The rear drivers side wheel bearing is my next fix along with the sensor I’m guessing is the speed or abs sensor. It was tore up (wire to sensor) so spliced it and thought I was good but now got all these lights and CEL. Haven’t got any codes read yet but looks like I’ve got some work to do LOL

    My ML430 has a leaking power steering pump reservoir that has sprayed all over the abs and motor. I'm thinking of cleaning the motor and brushes with Emory cloth and putting it back together. Esp light is on bas, abs, ets. Paid $900 at the junkyard with a clean title, no salvage or prior wrecks.

    • @joesnowmobiles
      @joesnowmobiles  6 лет назад

      Yes not a bad idea to clean up the motor, as for the brushes they actually wear down so you will need to replace them, or replace the motor with a good used one. Sounds like you got a great deal! Hope that helps!

    Hi Joe,
    The shifter moves, when I put the shifter on drive and release my foot off the brake pad the car runs but it won't roll because all wheels are locked. As if the parking brake is on, but the parking brake is disengaged. It seems like the hydraulics pump brake is activated for some reason.

    • @joesnowmobiles
      @joesnowmobiles  7 лет назад

      Tess Shepard ok let's start by having you pull the fuse for the ABS pump it's possible it's activated for some reason. It should be a 40amp fuse location should be F27, you can also try removing relay K25. Remove the fuse or the relay and let me know if anything changes.

      Sounds like you have air in the lines, or master cylinder is no good or needs to be bled. You could have air in the abs valve assembly and might need to activate it to get the bubbles to go.

Replaced thus far: ConductorPlate &seals, ABS module, MAP sensor, EGR, cleaned EGR hose in engine. Replaced all 4 wheel sensors. Brake switch. Codes from a repair shop. iris lassiter it is tough to do, you’ll need an extra set of hands or 2 to help you. You’ll also have to probably do it with the module out of the car for easier access. You’ll need something very thin to slip in between the pins and push them back while you slide the motor shaft back in. Most guys use 2 very thin screwdrivers to hold them back when reinstalling. Hope that helps.
      Thanks

Try turning the wheel all the way left and right a few times while the car is on and in park. Sometimes that will reset the light. Otherwise you 'll need someone to scan the abs codes to see why that light is on, a cheap scanner will not do it, you will need something like a iCarsoft i980 scanner. Hope that helps.

Anyway, I have the ABS, ESP and EPC warnings and I went to my mechanic who diagnosed a faulty steering angle sensor. He changed it for a good one and the problem remained... I am wondering if that allegedly good angle sensor could be faulty too...
    The steering has quite some play at center and the car had a problem of releasing the cruise control at higher speeds, which makes me think if the problem could be related to wheel speed sensor, but question is why the diagnostic would show steering angle sensor issues... Any thoughts please?

My answer would be its possible that they may be the same, but try to pull the washer tank first or use a mirror to see the part # on the motor then check online to cross reference the number and see what some of the other models use. Its very possible they are similar, although there are some years that use a slightly different style. Hope that helps.

      Thomas Ballard Hi Thomas, it really sounds like you have not removed all the air from the front brake lines. Take a clear hose and attach to the caliper bleeders, then stick that clear hose in a bottle of brake fluid this way you can bleed it without getting air sucked back into the brake lines. Pump the brakes until you see no more air bubbles coming out on either side. Also check your codes for the 3 lights with a scanner that can read them then we can proceed to get those fixed once we know the codes. Hopes that helps!

    hey joe. i know this is old but im hoping you still monitor it. I have a 2000 ML430 and Im having a BAS ESP light intermittently come on and stay on after 5-10 mins of driving. Straight line driving is fine but when cornering left at speeds like 10-15mph such as catching a green light turning left I get esp activation and braking of my wheels. It has been progressing for a few years now. It used to be super rare and happen only if it was really cold. The light stays on but the system wouldn't actually activate and worked normally otherwise so we could limp through the Ohio winters. but lately it is progressing and activates when turning left randomly. Now it always activates turning left when its below 40 deg. and sometimes when turning right. BAS ESP light resets after restart but comes back on after a few miles. Snapon Modus scanner says C1000 as far as codes go.
    So, I don't know is it YAW, or lateral sensor? OR possibly steering angle sensor? One other thing to confuse you, is that the snapon modus has a testing catagory labeled "Alignment" which I assumed would be talking to the steering angle sensor. Well if i try it i get "communication failed - check connections" So I'm wondering if the 2000 ML420 just doesn't use that catagory or if the steering angle sensor is bad and thats why its not communicating. But if it was totally bad I wouldn't think the light would ever go out and it does, or the car wouldnt be driveable.
    Have you seen other cases where the esp activation only happens while cornering? is there some way to hook up a scanner with a friend and have him watch as i drive in circles causing the esp to activate and figure out which sensor exactly is activating and setting off the esp?

    • @joesnowmobiles

      It’s been my experience when cornering that my abs has also kicked on, I replaced the lateral acceleration sensor and that fixed it. I’ve had to do this on 3 ML320s that I have owned. The trick is to find a good used one on eBay or a junkyard that isn’t already bad. A new one can run around $150, used they are much cheaper. Hope that help!

    • @joesnowmobiles
      @joesnowmobiles  6 лет назад

      Ok, well those don't typically relate to the ABS/ESP light, the P0730 light can mean that you have issues in the transmission. I would first suggest you check the fluid level with a dipstick, you can purchase them here amzn.to/2Ldo1iQ for about $10. The P0455 would be more of an emission related code telling you that you have a vacum leak in the fuel system. As for the lights flashing on and off, it could be that you have an intermittent code for either the abs or a wheel speed sensor. The abs brushes could be wearing out or you made need a new wheel speed sensor. As for the hose running across the engine feel free to email me some pictures at joesnowmobiles@gmail.com that will help me understand the issue better. Hope that helps!

    My 2001 ml430 Forces me to come to a complete stop like it breaks on me by itself out of nowhere and it won’t move again it locks up on itself until I turn the car off and turn it back on. Usually when the car comes to a complete stop.... it turns on a upside down triangle shape with an ! Mark. Any ideas on what that could be? It’s done it to me like three times scares the living crap out of me happens when I’m driving

      Any codes? I'd check that first that will help me to diagnose your issue. You will need a scanner that can pull the abs codes. You may have a bad wheel speed sensor also. The triangle is for the traction control. Several possible causes, but codes should tell us the actual issue so your not throwing parts at it. Let me know.
      Thanks

      I don't even have a check engine light on. the only thing that turns on from time to time is an ABS EPS light all the way to the far left hand side of the cluster.

      it actually forced the car to stop today as I was going 50 miles an hour . I'm starting to get scared of driving the car might not drive it anymore until I figure out what's going on especially out here where I'm at ...in north Carolina drivers like to follow very close and I'm afraid someone might hit me from the back. can I still check it for codes if there's no check engine light on only that ABS EPS light?

      surefine77 yes you should still have codes even if check engine light is not on. Sounds like you need the lateral sensor.

    Hi.
    How did you take the motor apart. I have the brushes. I took out the motor, but I am having a hard time taking the motor apart to replace the brushes.

      Gregory Guerrier the motor is really only held together by the strong magnets, if you pull hard enough on the shaft of the motor while holding the casing it should separate. You may need to pry around the edges of the seal to prepare it to be pulled apart. There are magnets on the motor side and the inside of the case they hold it together pretty tight. Hope that helps.

    how did you grip this in a vice without damaging the shaft?

    • @joesnowmobiles
      @joesnowmobiles  7 лет назад

      HI Tom the best way would be to use 2 strips of rubber in between your vice and the shaft this should give it enough grip and prevent damage, you could also try 2 blocks of wood but sometimes those are kind of slick and don't hold very well. They also make vices with soft jaws, you can also purchase these soft jaws for certain vices. Hope that helps!
      Thanks
