This video was so well done! It’s amazing how effective Pothos, Parlor Palm, Monstera, etc are at filtering out excess nutrients. My tanks with houseplants growing at the top have virtually non detectable nitrates, the tanks without any have nitrates that stay at 20ppm (and they’re heavily planted). My pothos roots always find their way to the sponge filter/outflow they reach out and grow directly above the flow then go into the substrate (especially if it’s a dirted tank) finding the soil. My Cory’s love the roots they rest on them, breed/lay eggs, forage, etc. I also love the natural serene vibe they give me growing out of the tank too, like a slice of nature! 🥰🍃
I was your biggest fan from the day one. You never dissapoint to emerse me to love your channel even more. Thank you for that. Your cinematography is still DOPE!
Using indoor plants in aquariums is such an underrated thing in the hobby. I really recommend anyone with the space and lighting to try this out. I've kept aquariums like this for many years- nitrate is never a problem-- except sometimes you need to add nitrogen for the plants if your aquarium doesn't have a lot of fish. The house plants will guzzle the nitrogen and will show deficiency clearly if they aren't getting enough!
Lack of waterflow/oxygen is the usual cause of root rot. In an overwatered house plant, the water is sitting stagnant in a pot full of dirt. In the aquarium we're using different substrates, usually have a filter and it's not 15cm deep waterlogged dirt!
yes, a great video i was looking for! besides the perfect production quality (audio, voice, post, lighting) it has lovely examples and a clear to follow guide. a super simple plant i also keep in this way (even in a passive low tech aq) is epipremnum aureum, it can grow many meters long out of very small AQs, definitely great to make small flats look junglish!
I have Pothos, Lucky Bamboo, Umbrella Plant and Gold Ribbon currently adorning the tops of my 55 gal aquarium. I just realized through your video that one of my potted house plants may do significantly better in my tank, so I’m going to hop on that. Thank you!
I love it! And yeah its crazy seeing what you can grow in hydroponics. The craziest thing I've grown was a maple tree seed that I sprouted on a patch of moss, was lovely while I had it but I had to get rid of it because the nutrient drain on the tank was too high.
I have been struggling with growing orchids or phalaenopsis and recently came across some information about growing them in tanks. I recently saved my large Orchid yesterday when I noticed signs of over-watering. I have it in filtered water I put a very small amount of potassium permanganate and, have it DWC since, since/ the light purple is gone now. but the air is bubbling till I can get something permanent. I live in upstate NY. and have baseboard heater apartment. I use evaporative humidifier and have Chicago hearty fig trees, a few dragon fruit, and a 5-gallon bucket of potatoes in my small place. I LOVE plants and gardening! Oh yeah I just started Goji berries from seed and garlic from bulb for next years crops also. Muy girlfriend has a nice lot. and we both compost! Love your videos!
Two other good plants I have found are the ''lucky bamboo'' and the spider plant. Currently I am using an old glass mixing bowl which I have banked soil up at the back and covered with gravel so it can't escape. The spider plant sits on top of some stones with the roots in the water but also in the soil while the lucky bamboo sits on the sandy bottom in front of the stone 'wall'. I don't have any fish but I do add houseplant fertilizer ever now and again and they are loving it. Since planting them both plants have doubled in size with the ''bamboo'' shooting out from extra nodes down the stems. I am hoping to get an aquarium to plant in, my problem is I don't want to use a heater so am limited in what fish I can use (would like to use rice fish but they aren't available here currently). But I think aquariums with both land and water plants in are probably the best ones, especially from the viewing point of view. Enjoyed this video as usual.
I have spider plants too. They are doing well in my unheated aquariums. I also pull some other plants from my country walks. They are doing well too. I don't really like the idea of plants growing out of the top as a lot of fish need tank lids because they jump out.
@@rosemarydudley9954 Apparently the solution is to just keep your water level a couple of inches below the top. I follow someone with something like 50 aquascaped aquariums which all have fish in them and none have lids on them. But he has also never lost any fish to jumping out of the tank, his solution is that while he has plenty of floating plants which probably helps he simply keeps the water level a couple of inches down from the top and it seems to solve the problem. He has beta fish in some tanks as well which seem to be the main offenders for most people but lots of other species as well. If you are interested the channel is MD Fish Tanks and you will see what I mean. He also has plants growing - deliberately - out of a couple of his tanks with others where the actual water plants are just growing on up out of the water. He has even scaped a tank in a local fish/aquarium shop where they put a lot of plants -spider plants/ peace lilies - growing out of the top to show customers how you can do it.
Hello. I just happened upon this video looking for a habitat for my Seven-Stripe Cichlids. I just love this video and concept. I am in my 70s and only 15 months into Fish Keeping. I will go out tomorrow and look for a taller Driftwood to anchor a few Plants to. I just can't tell you enough how excited I am about finding this video. Thank you. Blessings
Ive just started growing plants out of my aquariums, I went with pothos and monstera to begin with since it seems alot of people are having luck with those. Above the aquariums I have potted plants that hangs down and I attached a chain that runs along the ceiling and drops down between my aquariums so I have something to attach the pothos to. On the other end of that wall there is sunlight most of the day so I am working on a planted wall where I will also have pothos growing up attached to a rack on the wall and later I will bolt on some pots so I can add flowering plants for color. I have bigger plants like a palmtree, monstera etc on the floor wich creates depth. Basically Im trying to turn the entire side of the livingroom into a jungle with open-top "pond" aquariums both blackwater and regular. Its allready starting to take form but in a year or so it is going to be uh-mazing! 😍
Thank you! It's the annual seasonal chaos of repotting and bringing in the tropicals, (both plants and guppies), and I am grateful to have such inspiration while I'm working out the details of what goes where- last winter's attempt to grow ti plant in my hex tank was not especially successful, I needed to borrow fresh eyes.
I love to experiment with emers (Aquaponic) growth. Peace-Lilly works great, Bamboo too. I got several experiments on my RUclips Channel, too. But only in german language
I watch many videos in languages I don't know, including cooking, gardening, crafts - the translation works, and most of the time there are few words, anyway. Good luck!
I've been having Ripariums and Paludariums for so many years and it is definitely my favorite! All of them I tested myself throughout the years: Anthurium, different types of Fern, different types of Palm, Spider Plant, Red Dracaena/ Green Dracaena, Dracaena Trifasciata Pothos, Tradescantia Zebrina, Tradescantia Pallida, Zebra Plant, Peace Lily, Chinese Money Plant, Lucky Bamboo, Fittonia, Syngonium, Bacopas, Basil, Rosemary, Thyme, etc. They are all Low to Medium light but I recommend Medium to all. Liquid Fertilizer helps too!
I am very fascinated by aquaponics and I practice it in my aquarium. I've been following you recently but I immediately fell in love with your concept of aquarium. it would be very useful to the community if I made a video in which you list which indoor plants are usable in addition to those already mentioned. also I would like to know your opinion on the use of orchids in aquaponics .... are they plants that could work? they have a truly spectacular root system. anyway, congratulations! you are truly a talent!
It depends if they can grow directly from the water or they need a substrate reaching it (coconut threads?). I heard some ferns cannot grow directly from water, but if they have some "buffer" substrate to root in, they fit in.
I saw, in a fish group on Facebook, where someone shared a photo of their orchid which had actually bloomed under the water. The entire plant was under. I was amazed. I don't know if it was a specific species, but it worked for them.
Hi . I love you channel. This is an amazing idea but i am worried about one thing tho...how do you sterilize the house plants before putting them in? Wouldnt they be carrying any pathogens that could harm your fishes
hi, your video is very nice. I would like to know if you put your emerged plants directly with their roots in the water or if you adapt them? I would like to be inspired by your creations but the plants need, I think, to adapt to being permanently in water. what do you think?
I do this too, its really easy and looks great in your tank. I like to suspend mine and the roots stay floating in the water while the plant grows above. The fish love swimming and hiding in the roots. HOWEVER, its the perfect escape ladder if you have any crabs...
I've seen things like Hygrophilla or Anubias growing out of water, I knew about houseplants being reproduced this way, but I didn't realize this is possible until few years ago. It's possible for basically any houseplant unless it's cactus. Nowadays there are companies, which make drip walls for aquariums (at least as a custom job). This is more impressive, esp. with Dark water natural scape. Overall a small aquarium looks much much bigger. There are multiple options to do this, with imagination being the limit: * using aquarium decoration (roots) * planted overhead/internal sump * plastic grid holding the plants * holder from a thick isolated wire * paludarium ... It's easier with open aquariums, but even pothos can grow from covered aquarium, if the humidity or jumpers are the issue. I'm careful with this, but one guy had 26 aquariums at one point in his flat, often completely open and somehow he managed the humidity. I've got some pothos plants growing from my fish tanks, paludarium with submersed crypts and emerse anubis and Peace Lily, all growing well. I plant to move few of--shoots of the Peace Lily to my largest tank, it helps I'm not using glass, but polymer cover there.
I love asparagus ferns so much, but they will snag everything within their reach when doing maintenance. Crotons are really nice too for a huge splash of color. Most have large leaves, but the Zanzibar variety has pencil-thin leaves that look like fireworks so they can fit snugly in between plants with larger leaves. (typo)
Amazing video as always. Just an important thing to notice: be careful with peace lilies around your cat. I'm sure you know this, but this info might be helpful for someone else watching the video. Source: I'm a vet 👨⚕️
I put some pothos cutting inna fishbowl with a couple wild fish a couple months ago and the pothos has turned into a full bush with large roots the fish poop I believe fertilizes it it's pretty cool
I have a lowboy with pleeenty of different spiecies, most that you listed but my biggest joy is.. simple ferns that I bought for like 2 punds when they were 10cm tall and now they deeply rooted into the scape and are full sized plants:D Also my potte plants trive watered by water change left overs :) How you manage to keep that maiden hair though.. you must have a greener thumb XD
"Think outside the aquarium" I like that. Mother nature is amazing
It’s about time someone showed the best way to add house plants
This video was so well done! It’s amazing how effective Pothos, Parlor Palm, Monstera, etc are at filtering out excess nutrients. Why not just use marginal plants, i.e pond plants?
I've always thought by doing this the roots will rot
Lack of waterflow/oxygen is the usual cause of root rot. In an overwatered house plant, the water is sitting stagnant in a pot full of dirt. In the aquarium we're using different substrates, usually have a filter and it's not 15cm deep waterlogged dirt!
I find it so fascinating that over watering a potted plant kills it but this method many thrive. I currently have an orchid in water culture method.

Wooow this channel has a voice....finally 🎉!!!!!
Great video man awesome work!
Narrator voice, good teacher, great aquarist, definitely like!!!
Another good reason to keep houseplants this way: no need to water them anymore! :) Great video as usual, thanks!
lol , i always kept it that way, while i kill plants in a soil pot, how ironic
Dude, easily my favorite channel on here! Such incredible works of living art!
Thank you! :)
I’ve just started doing this and it’s incrediblw
Your voice is amazing! Love the content of your channel too!😊
The most handsome and best scaper..with a lovely voice too
Lovely tank. I too use plants like this…. I love the nature corner in my house, it’s therapeutic value is immense 🇦🇺❤️
This one is really helpful..for those thinking of using indoor plants in aquarium
I love it! And yeah its crazy seeing what you can grow in hydroponics.

YOU CAN TALK!?!? Nah just kiddin, perfect timing I was bored 😅🔥
Meow meow meow meow meow meow meow meow meow meow meow meow meow meow meow 👀😐 meow meow meow meow 👀😐
It was your work that inspired me to build a "house for fish and plants" - THANKS from POLAND
I love your style of scapes and bite sized format ❤ I’m excited to binge your videos when I get home from work
I’m in love with all your video. And your voice style « storytelling » is 🙌🏻✨ Bonjour from Québec. French 🇨🇦💁🏻♀️
Oh my goodness, your string of hearts is amazing

Great explanation for houseplants to be survive
Just stumbled across this video and really enjoyed it, this is what RUclips was made for, I'm now a new subscriber. Well done
I did not expect your voice to be like that. As always, great vid!
Can you do a video talking about the pest that come along with this method and how to manage them! Thank you! 🙏🏾
Thanks for this! I am going to try and incorporate this concept with vampire crabs and turtles. Keep up the great work on the channel.

Stunning idea !!!!! Love it!!!! 😍😍
Have watched your videos for a long time. Finally decided to give it a try it out with calla lilly.
That is the most fabulous asparagus fern I ever did see. ❤ swwooooooon

Greetings from Southern California USA. Great ideas/tips. I love your channel and content, make more vids please
I got started from Pothos like many aquarists in this hobby. From there, I've tried Dracaena trifasciata, Dracaena sanderiana, and many others :)
Your vids just get better and better!
Your voice sounds very soothing❤ Very nice video, something new for me. Thank you
Awesome. I love the monstera in my 55. I’ve also have some beautiful Pathos plants in one of my bowfronts that are doing great
Stunning - thank you so much!!! (And thx for writing down the names again. ;-)
I love to experiment with emers (Aquaponic) growth.
Peace-Lilly works great, Bamboo too.
I got several experiments on my RUclips Channel, too.

Been talking to the boss about plants in aquariums, thank you for the info and direction on how and what's best
LOOOOOVE the style of the video that you makes!!!

If you can't get plant lights would sunlight by a window be enough
Oh my the ideas you've given me. Blessings
You are making master piece....loved your work ...
Thanks for sharing!
Great work.
Man, your channel is awesome!
Hi . I love you channel.
This is an amazing idea but i am worried about one thing tho...how do you sterilize the house plants before putting them in? Wouldnt they be carrying any pathogens that could harm your fishes
Might want to change title from ‘survive’ to ‘thrive’ !! Great content!
stunning! yet again!!
Hi! How are you?
October has begun. It's getting winter.
I wish you good health and good things this week as well.
Thank you very much.
new sub just found your channel. Very inspiring, I'll be working on adding a monstera plant to my 125g tank this weekend!

Good idea 😊
Many thanks, very helpful...what do you use for fertiliser please?

Very informative and inspiring
Editing is on point as usual! Thanks for another high quality video 🙂 Greets from Austria!
This is very inspiring!! Thank you so much!
In certain ways, the roots in the tank are most attractive to watch.
Cool video! I want to try this one day! Keep up the great content!
Спасибо за советы, очень ценим:)
Fantastic! Do you have a problem with fungus gnats?
I grew rice and lucky bamboo in my aquarium until I added a goldfish... Cryptocoryne can also be grown as a regular houseplant, by the way.
This is a really cool idea - it does look great. If i did this with Cichlids can it harm them if they try to eat them?
Does fertilizer need to be used to keep the bonsai alive? If so which one do you use? :)
That’s exactly what I needed !
Does it help to clean the water without external fertilization?
Waiting for TreX 💚
