Guitarist Claude Thibeault, bassist Jean-Pierre Brie, drummer Phillipe Bernard and keyboard player Guy Pisapia asked vocalist Jean-Marc Pisapia to join them as the Box in 1982. He agreed, and the band released their first album (self-titled) two years later. Although all the members were French Canadian, they mostly sang in English. All the Time, All the Time, All the Time followed in 1985, but the band didn't make it in Canada until 1987's Closer Together. Their last album was The Pleasure and the Pain in 1990; after Bernand and Guy Pisapia left in 1992, the greatest hits compilation A Decade of the Box was released in 1993.
I was today years old when I realized The Box was Canadian!....I'm a 55 yr old Canuck ! lol.. Love this tune even more now !
Wow this song could easily apply to what's going on in the world right now
It’s literally timeless. As long as this system goes on, we’ll always have “big shot politicians” and “ordinary people” who just want peace and “ordinary lives”…….🤔
Nah, only one country is cheering on a genocidal despot.
Yeah the media and politics never change much.
A case of the more things change the more they stay the same! They want us all to stay inside The Box, where they can keep us under control! 🤣🕊️🇨🇦
USSR went away but NEW World Order Crowd took over the lead roll of bad guys we should all fear !
Jean-Marc Pisapia's voice is amazing and unique
as are his gestures/moves~fantastic
I heard this on 102.9 Bounce (in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada) the other day and must say, this song is still current and still amazing!
One of the best songs from the best era of music hands down!!👍🏻
You like this song? Watch this! ruclips.net/video/78aPsCVnW-A/видео.html
ruclips.net/video/AFT1l50CgHo/видео.html This is another good one
I was a security guard in the 80's in Ottawa, and these guys had a concert at this venue. They were the nicest guys you'd ever meet, so nice to grunts like me, and they put on an awesome show.
That's SO nice to hear!
Happy to hear that and not surprised. Jean-Marc and the boys always seemed to be kind and well-grounded!
This song is suddenly on heavy rotation on the 80's music channels.
No KIDDING!
It's About Time!
❤ 😂
One of my favourite 80’s retro songs! This should still apply today!
Had the absolute pleasure of seeing these guys live at McBowl on the weekend. Just blown away! all these years later, how relevant this song still is. The Box is one of the greatest Canadian bands hands down!!!
They are not Canadian, they are Québécois.
@@markengel6570 Who's those guy's anyway, lol.
@@signedelacroix7213 their Canadian. Respected all over English , French Canada thanks...
@@signedelacroix7213 Troll level 2/10, I do not recommend this troll/gorm.
@@signedelacroix7213that makes them Canadians then right ?
The way they did the guitar solo medley of the two anthems at 2:30 was so cool. This band put out some classic tunes.
this could not come at a better time, as a nova scotia "bluenoser" and a Quebecer. respect.
The Box is still missed, what a band, what a voice, wow. I wore out my cassette.
Me too!
The singer is doing a Box 40th anniversary tour in Ontario right now! Boom 973 plays 3 of their songs and probably didnt even help mention the tour lol... cancon needs help.
They are still playing! Just saw them in Port Hope! Small theatre but they were Great 👍
I haven't seen or heard these songs for over 20 years. I've tried searching online but no sucess. Thank you!!! I saw these guys in Halifax in July 1990: they sounded just like you hear them here on RUclips. The Box are truly a part of Canadian history and culture.
Proud to be Canadian since a lot of Canadian artists didn’t make world fame. If I had been born elsewhere the likelihood of hearing great Canadian music would be slimmer.
The Box is still my favorite Canadian band from the 80s; saw them in Kitchener and will never forget...
My favorite band in my teenage days i still listen to them today 👍👍👌
Same here
Amazing song. Great memories of life back in the 80's. Wish I could go back. The Box songs were always so damn catchy.
What a great song, brings back the 80s and 90s
i saw this band in toronto along the likes of lover boy, chilliwak.great memories late seventies early eighties .keep rocking guys.
This song has such a mid-80s vibe, makes me nostalgic. We forget now just how much the cold war and the risk of nuclear annihilation was on all our minds at that time. But also hopeful for the future. Maybe it's just nostalgia for my youth, but it seems like it was a better time in many ways (not all, to be sure, but many).
I gave a Russian student my Box cassette tape when I was in Vladivostok back in 1990. They loved the music and it probably was shared, taped, and played, maybe it spread across Russian itself. Perhaps the music of the Box actually had its small role in the end of the cold war, who knows.
The Box are back!! I saw them in Laval, Quebec, Canada last night! As good as ever!
I saw a picture kicking around facebook of Jean-Marc and Sass Jordan this weekend. She is still as beautiful as ever.

+WhiteHotToddy That's a great photo. Thanks for sharing. Still love hearing this song on the radio.
WhiteHotToddy a year ago but cool man
you have some sort of god. good for you.
Awesome song, great message.
awesome song, awesome message, awesome people
This music is like medicine for me after having to endure all that top 40 crap at work.
A very under-rated band.
This very tune shows that Quebec rocks, just like Canada does, and makes me proud of being canadian.
Rock on, world.
Quebec is still a part of CANADA. IDIOT.
name surname who said it wasnt IDIOT
Great music comes from all over the world....Including Quebec. Love it all.
Such a fantastic tune! I only "discovered" this band after seeing a performance of this song by the singer on some Quebec TV show a few years ago. I really wish they would have made it in the US. I missed out all these years.
I heard this song for the first time on Boom 97.3 and because of that sound like a hammer hitting something on an anvil got me hooked instantly. It's also has a unique subtext in the lyrics.
Here in 2021...Closer Together popped in my thoughts while listening to oldies rock radio. Undeniable nostalgia...80's... high-school...all that. Still love this band 😀🎷🎹🎼🎸🎶
So long to the 80s for ever. The 80s rule for ever and for ever. Peace out for ever.
My name is Jamie, this song is the best from the box from the 1980s. This song always puts me in a good mood.
I loved these guys ever since the first time I heard this song. This was the first song I heard of theirs so I listened to their other songs right away and loved them my whole life and will never stop loving these guys. We need more groups like THE BOX.
The Box were a good band, i remember my parents signing up for Columbia House back in 1986. One of the Cassettes they got was The Box Closer Together. Good Stuff
Actually, they still are a good band. They started touring again, and they sound just as great!
just the best !!!!!!!!!! we are missing them very much !!!
The 80´s is the best ever in music! *Cheers from Sweden*
What an important message. Wish these guys were still around. The world needs them more then ever now lol.
Just play the song and hope more people listen.
They are still around.
I listened to this and it brought back alot of memmories . I am from Ontario and grew up with this most beautiful and amazing band in my youth . The box not only gave me and the world solice ! , but enabled me to take a minute and look at the world “ outside the box “….. Salut to a most wonderful collaberation of very talented artists.
The Box playing in Timmins, ON on June 29, 2017 !!!!! Stars and Thunder festival.
Apparently this band is playing at a bowling alley in Mississauga tomorrow night. After learning this I had to look up this song that I absolutely LOVED as a child lol it still slaps
We are all the same. Stop the war!!!
Best song ever!
Good tune!Canada 🇨🇦 rocks!🍁
Wow where did the 1980s went. I wish I could go back to the 1980s for ever.
Boucherville January 23rd, gonna rock out to these lads!
What an astronomically 80's tune! But almost any decade after it smashes into would be astonished as it would still be a hit today! So much power in emotion and lyrics - so much still applies because despite what it was as an anti-nuke song, it's very true that only the delusional & the naive think the cold war is over...
Quintessential 80’s!
Nostalgia. No war, no matter how one feels everything was in its place, and we knew who we were. Now everything is so confusing.
Number one and their time
love the box fav band in late 80s when in hi school
Love the sound of that 80's Cold War Communist hammer hitting with that steady beat lol
We hope that life goes on, and nothing changerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrs.
Saw this group as kid at Ontario Place before they built the Molson Amp. It was a great show.
Damn, Sass is so beautiful
Don't know why this song popped up in my head. I haven't heard it in 30 odd years
I came hear from watching 1987 team brawl CAN vs USSR World Juniors tournament which reminded me of this song that I knew from watching CBC Video Hits back in the day
We"re all different in our own unique ways, but we are all on the same team and striving for the same goal.
I remember my dad just blasting this when I was around 12, yelling “we are UNORDINARY people” I know the lyrics are wrong but he taught me we’re all different and that’s okay!
Just saw "The Box" in Kitchener Ontario Canada August 12 2017. Superb. They are back!
Good interview on "behind the Vinyl" Addictive!
Year 2022. We are STILL ordinary people 👍🏼
Oh My God!, great vid..thanks!
Most lyric sites say the line is "a star bears no colour black or white" but I'm pretty sure it's "red or white" which makes more sense given the red star and white star symbols.
Sounds like a great song when you’re driving on the highway
We are ordinary people 🙌
Gotta love this song: Francophone Quebeckers (who are Canadian) singing in English pretending to be Americans who wanted better relations with the former Soviet Union!
Canada's values have changed though. They may not have a heavy military presence. Just a couple months ago an article from a canadian newspaper was celebrating the brazil election of Bosonero because of businesses opportunity it would give to Canadian corporations that want access to brazil's natural resources.
NeoGeo12 I miss the cold war
Not pretending to be American. Sung from Canadian point of view.
You're way off. I suggest you search RUclips for "Behind The Vinyl Ordinary People" and listen to Jean-Marc's overview of this song.
Exactly.
I like this song and also Closer Together by The Box.
What a great message to all people in the world ... we are all the same ... we are human ... stop letting psychopaths divide us for their purposes of control.
We are the UNION OF HUMANS ... revel in our greatness not in our problems.
Black blue green yellow red white I don't care ... gay straight whatever ... love our differences and love humans for our greatness.
Only through a UNION of HUMANS can we survive on our Earth and try to ensure our species.
UNION?! But...."Diversity?!" = Divisive.
Heard this on the radio today. SLAPS! 😌
Ordinary People of the World, Unite!
Their best song I find it to be positive and about equality. I remember that sass Jordan was in this band first also.
All those cool Canadian bands with that sound in the mid-80s... The Boxx, The Parachute Club, The Spoons, Men Without Hats et al...
Those were such good years... and I was young and pretty...
Gregg Smith don't forget The Arrows, Harlequin, Idle Eyes
This music video is one of my first memories as child. Like one of my first things I remember ever as a living being. How funny is that!
I've always wondered what dude in a cast was doing at the video shoot. *L*
Yep! A lot of people don't seem to make that distinction, which is even important in a smaller countr in area and population, and certainly important in coutries as large as China, the USA, Canada, Brazil and Australia.
Anyway, that aside, I used to have this single, and then later it was on another album (I was on two) that had "Crying Out Loud for Love" and "Carry On".
T'was in like 1987 in Ottawa that I saw this act The Box ... so it was like over 30 ago... omg. dont cry over my dying old age please thank you. FG In the USA in the USSR. :,,-(.
hmmm 2019 and still relevant .(eh?)
classic hit, which is maybe the father of rap as we know it as far as I'm concerned.
makes me proud to know they are like me french canadians.
I like them ever since I saw them in concert in the mid-late 80's (as a sideband).
rock on everyone. (btw, by now I would'nt worry too much about US-Russia nuclear dangers)
I enjoy seeing Sass Jordan in these videos. Best backup vocalist on this album!
super! Cette chanson me rappelle Caroline Morin... We were 18...
I love this song 2017
"In the USA/in the USSR" -- ah, good point. It's been awhile since I'd listened to this song, so that obvious line didn't come to my head!
"Canadians are obsessed with the US" -- if by "obsessed" you mean we shake our heads in wide-eyed disbelief and laugh. There's not a lot of respect for the country's image. For individual American people, sure (because yes, a country and its people are two different things) -- but the country and its politics, definitely nope.
True, not the US but us as in Canadians just smile cuz well we know the truth is you cant beat us never have never will :) ps remember the only war the Americans ever won was the civil war ... and it was the wrong side that won # They're full of themselves
I am an American-Canadian. Love both Countries but cannot understand why Canada acts like the 51st State. Canadians are truly obsessed. We watch American TV, American Movies, Obsess over American politics and other American issues that DO NOT concern Canadians.
@@a.jlondon9947 Imagine you lived in Tibet, and you had nothing but Chinese propaganda blasted 24/7. Your trade is inextricably linked to China. Your culture is flooded out literally and figuratively by Chinese culture on a daily basis. All your manufactured goods are bought from China, and all your products' primary market is China.
Perhaps, you would pay attention to China's humours fairly closely.
Now, put that in the current context: Thousands of Chinese are using Tibet to cross into parts of Russia for work during a plague that China has not effectively capped, or cares to do anything about for that matter.
Canada doesn't act like the 51st state, it acts like a concerned neighbour that is watching another very important neighbour tear itself apart and setting the house on fire while claiming it's wonderful.
@@kmikl EXACTLY Kmikl!!
My name is Jamie Hand, this song has to be own of the best song of the 1980s
luv this song..thnx for sharing!!!
What a great message
Russians never chit on the Can in history except maybe when they sold Alaska to Sam.
@garycalgary CBC Video hits sure bring back memories of my junior high days.
South Africa should hear this song...... VOETSEK ANC
Sass Jordan is a total babe in this video. Love the stage concept. Don't see this type of videos nowaday.
Pisapia has a great voice IMO
I super adore this song, it's a royal slap in the face to relentless partisan warlock ideology. I will love all these artists right up until I die. I swear it. FG.
I actually listened to one of the pop-up adds that come on RUclips b4 the music video comes on & the only reason I listened to it was because it was a 16 second preview of the new 007 movie "SkyFall." But the truth is, I've listened to a couple of other movie trailors b4, but I tend to skip the music trailors because I simply don't keep up w/the music of the present era as I still favor the older stuff of the 50s/60s/70/80s & some of the 90s stuff in both rock & country.
god how times have changed
Awesome song, awesome vid, awesome quality (and awesome pizza dude commercial again - that guy rocks like Box)
Many thanks uploader / artist / faceless corporate MusicGiant
My copy of this was substantially substandard
"Smelly cat, Sme'Elly cat ; it's not your fault"
I saw them yesterday. They were practicing at a bowling place
Thx for posting!
I believe that's Sass handing Jean-Marc the baby at the beginning of the video. He gets a kiss too. :)
"Crying Out Loud for Love" was on "Closer Together", which came out in the late '80s, and "Carry On' was on "The Pleasure and the Pain" which came out in the early 90s. Did you have a "Greatest Hits" album or something? It would be nice to discover The Box had an album I'd never heard before -- their stuff was so consistently solid, but they only put out a few albums *pout, grumble, whine*
You forgot to mention SASS JORDAN got her start with THE BOX..
Just noticed her on this video. I loved Sass's music!
It's a cold war song. USA vs. USSR - and the lunacy of it. Pay attention to the lyrics like "I wonder what the Soviet Rambo looks like in their pictures? I'm sure as hell he's just as sweet as ours".
sick!
Pretty sure that is Sass Jordan in yellow top with baby at beginning of video.
+starr shine It definitely is the Sass...
I think ur right !
+starr shine It would make sense. She's was one of the girls doing the backvocals on closer together
Jérémie Balliet Merci mon ami.
It is definitely her. She was in the band I believe.
Burlington Swine Fest 2023 Friday night headliner act. 🎉🐖🐖🐖🐖🐖🐖🐖🐖
finnally the whole song with the video
@landrykkb Occasionally I get this song stuck in my head but just one small part of the chorus. I had forgotten how awesome the song really was [I was only 10 when it came out]. Now I'm going to have to check out some of their discography. But yea, I definitely remember the Video Hits days. haha.
