I've put the species names in the English captions if you're interested (although I'm still not sure what species of gull they are). As always, captions are open to community translations if you fancy being extra altruistic :)
Most of the gulls in this video are herring gulls. There are some black-headed gulls which you can generally distinguish by their much smaller size (e.g. barely any larger than the lapwings at 3:10) There is an immature lesser black-backed gull at 7:00 (much thinner bill than the herring gulls) and I believe there's another one at 7:08 due to the dark greater coverts, but I'm not sure on that one.
I edited out a massive section where Ellen was telling me all about the bird watching bits in Red Dead Redemption! I never knew there was so much ornithology in a shooting game!
@@SallyLePage I found that all of the birds you can see (and shoot) in Red Dead Redemption 2 region of Lemoyne (which seems to be roughly modeled around the US state of Louisiana) are also ones I have seen in Florida. Coincidentally, bitterns are very easy to see here, because our wetlands are much more green.
5:59 "everyone's really scared of canada geese, I don't know why" cycle/walk along a canal towpath and you'll know why we fear the feathered demons. had one chase me for about a mile once.
People must be running into just a goose having a really bad day. We have tons of them in Illinois and I've never been chased. I did have one his, they had their young with them and I had gotten a little close. Other than that, there is sometimes no way to not get close to them here when walking certain places.
@@Reavyn1 Cities have pigeons, my central Illinois town has geese. They've decided that it's too much trouble to migrate, so they just hang out here year round and churn out more and more geese. Families block traffic as they cross busy roads, and yes, mama goose will try to mess you up if she doesn't like how you look at her goslings.
I usually roll my eyes and skip the ad part of a sponsored youtube video. But the "Yes! I'm getting paid!" part made me go you know what... good for you! I always tend to forget the financial side of youtube videos and how hard it must have been for content creators during this pandemic.
Thanks. It's one of the reasons I'm so blunt about disclosing ads - not only is it a legal requirement that I say if a company is paying me, but also I don't think creator should feel ashamed of being paid to make the stuff they love.
Good lord, I miss the outside.and friends. (Also I'm fully getting Magellan so that next time I see you I can maybe possibly hold my own in a clever conversation)
OH EM GEE! How am I so lucky to see this? Do all super-smart English women know each other and pal around on weekends? BIG fan of Ellen's channel! So many questions...
It they are on youtube, and visit VidCon and other events for youtubers, then there is a chance they have at least met. Also my two favourite british youtubers in the one video, must remain calm and think of england.
Loved this video. I'm an avid birder in the southern USA. I've seen every heron, egret, ibis, spoonbill, and stork in North America, but I still have not seen either of the two bittern species! I love shovelers too. ❤ Interesting about the teals and the color. The bird you call a teal is called a green-wing teal here. We also have blue-winged and cinnamon teal, both of which have both teal and blue (above the teal) on their wings. I don't even bother trying to tell the females apart of those two species.
I can't tell you how much I love this video. I adore the work you both do separately, and together it's even better. The whole video is so calming and relaxing, but I couldn't help from grinning through the entire thing. Thank you both!
Well this was an unexpected suggestion from RUclips. Cormorants are a particular favorite of mine to watch at my favorite beach on the Monterey Bay. So between them, wetland birds (a particular favorite in general) and Ellen, I'm doing pretty good here. And have seen American Bitterns more by accident then anything. Don't think I've ever gotten one on camera.
0:23 Hahaha, I've heard Read Dead Redemption 2 referred to as "that game that makes you want to go into nature in real life, only to be disappointed that it doesn't quite look as spectacular" ^_^
Fancy seeing a bittern in London! I've only ever heard them (what a boomer!). But, I signed up for Magellan tv, to make Sally rich, and "the science of bubbles" doesn't seem to be ther any more. What a swiz.
Awesome footage as usual, and congratulation on spotting that bittern! I hope you can do nature dates again soon, really looking forward to seeing more of that (almost as much as to the end of the pandemic in general!). How is your pond / bog garden doing? Seems like an eternity, even though RUclips claims that your video on how to make one was only uploaded 4 weeks ago!
I always get Coot and Moorhens mixed up too! I thought it was just something unique to myself, but in speaking to people it seems to be a common mix up. Such a great tip to help remember them, thank you! (I might have to pop that tip into one of my own videos if you don't mind!).
I'm a beginner an I absolutely love nature ducks and birds especially I love the variety in this video where abouts in the UK is this place you were at
Love these nature dates! And now I absolutely want to go birdwatching again, I used to do it with my pa as a kid but I've not done it in years. Congrats on the bittern!
As a Canadian, the fear of Canada Geese is especially strong for those people who visited Stanley Park in Vancouver as a small child, the geese pack hunt small children.
I used to love going on walks and photographing nature before I got my newest job. I'm typically just too worn down after to go now, even on my days off. I really need to get back out and photograph more...
I'm really curious if you have had the chance to return here since the onset of diminished airline flights. Has the quieter environment of less flights changed the bird population/behavior or other effects? Is the experience different? (I would think so, but how so?)
There's a crow that lives outside my house and it follows me down the street flying from lamppost to tree cawwing at me and swooping. I live in a state of perpetual fear
8:19 what the frick is that? that doesn't look like any british duck, the closest thing it looks like is an egyptian goose, which isn't native to the uk but there are breeding populations in london from escaped birds, however it's not a normal egyptian goose that's for sure, id guess it was a hybrid between an egyptian goose and maybe like a ruddy shelduck or something

At 5:05 you have Black-headed Gulls.

It makes me so happy seeing Sally and Ellen hanging out
The connection of video games and biology with goose game is not something I expected to see but I am HERE for it!

What is this? a Crossover episode?! I love it!
Well said!
This series is genuinely some of the best nature content on RUclips, thank you so much Sally!
I've only just found this series now so I am a bit late to the party, but I completely agree! I've been binging all the videos, guilty free haha.

I appreciate you pointing out that this was filmed before the plague ended all society. I figured that had to be the case.
Just want to say that I really appreciate the beautiful cinematography and editing!
Thanks, it was a mammoth edit for sure!
No, WAY! Two of my favorite gals, in one video! What a precious gift, I can't believe you two did a video together!

This was a nice video. Also, I'm glad I'm not the only one who still giggles at the mention of a "tit" joke
Yo it’s Ellen ! Didn’t expect that super excited!

Didn't realise how much I needed this until I felt myself relaxing. :-)
What a lovely video! And now I know the difference between a Coot and a Moorhen 🙌
That's the white beak vs red beak, right?

Beautiful, what a terrific video. Thank you.

A bird watching area right below the flightpath of Heathrow. Exactly my homour.
