By the time you watch this episode of Talking Watches, Curtis McDowald will be in Tokyo, along with the rest of the US fencing team. Fencing, for many Americans, is an exotic sport - so much so that if you mention it, you might very well get a blank stare. (I remember asking a clerk at a Montgomery Ward department store, in the 1970s, if they sold fencing equipment. I ended up in an aisle full of gear for building fences.)
But McDowald and his team hope to change all that - and to establish American fencing as a force to be reckoned with, internationally.

This is what Talking Watches should be about. Who cares about some super rich guy that can buy anything he wants, they all start sounding exactly the same... This is what I've wanted to see from you guys. More like this please.
True but you should check out the Mario Andretti interview. I found it really entertaining.
Exactly!!!
Sorry but I don’t want to see someone with a humdrum collection / I want to see someone with watches I have never seen before. There is defo space for both styles of collection.
@@Watchlover371 You're missing my point. With a lot of the rich guys you see them same expensive watches over and over again - great at first but after a while it becomes repetitive and in my opinion a bit boring. With a little imagination and some digging you can find fascinating watches that don't need to cost as much as a house. Humdrum? Absolutely not.
YESSSSS!!!!!!!
That Seiko is unreal!
Hey HODINKEE, just a few words : WE WANT MORE TALKING WATCHES !!!!
Is refreshing to see a genuine gentleman and cool individual talking about his collection.
Great guest 💫✨
Incredible example of what Talking Watches can be.
Talking watches is back! This is literally why I love HODINKEE
@Mertzi Plomeros. have you watch the video@@?
Mechanical watch at 17. Even though it was a fashion watch he was already moving in the right direction. Your Grandfather lives on with you through the watch. Well Done!
I disagree, because "Gucci" make some great looking and quality watches meaning he wasn't just heading in the right direction. You don't need the same boring Swiss names over and over again to be a collector, it's best to be original
To be fair, that Gucci didnt look bad at all.
This is one of the best episodes of Talking Watches for sure. So down to earth, so honest. Love it.
I really dig his taste in watches.
I love that he was able to get his grandfather’s watch. That’s amazing!
That King Seiko dial is 🔥
No kidding. I’ve never seen a “tropical”’ K or G Seiko that didn’t really mean “messed up.”
Amazing. Do you know the ref number?
@@HelloHundo I think it's the King Seiko 45-7001 😁
@@Judah.Rosenthal what does tropical mean
@@xoxjelloxox Truthfully? It’s means damaged. Usually by sun but sometimes by moisture. For watch collectors, it (converse to logic) often increases price if it doesn’t go too far.
Killer watch collection, Olympic fencer, the only guy who is POSSIBLY cooler than Curtis is his grandfather... cruising around in his Army uniform wearing his Rolex GMT Master.
Couldn’t agree more
That Pepsi is absolutely amazing and the fact that it was a grandfather’s makes it even that much more wonderful wear it in good health my friend and good luck in the Olympics
What a great episode. Thanks for sharing your collection, Curtis!
This show makes you appreciate all ranges of watches more and not just flashy expensive ones. Respect.
Amazing collection and history. Enjoyed that
Fancy seeing you here BlackScoutSurvival!
Black scout survival is into watches love to see a review on his channel of what’s the best field watch for survival……👍
Hodinkee. this is the kinda story i want to see in Talking Watches. not just some dude paying millions of dollar to buy some obscure dial from an auction that no one cares about.. Absolutely love this episode
Great guy, great collection. These are the people who should represent the watch community, not the The TImepiece Gentleman.
so true!. very well said
Hear, hear!
He has great taste! Even the Gucci is cool...
The story with his grandpa was everything, feel the energy of him in that watch
Lovely episode, lovely collection. That King Seiko is really nice.
that KS- OMG what an absolute beauty! Awesome story behind it as well!
Cool dude, nice watches, especially that King Seiko.
My favorite episode so far, much respect and best wishes to Curtis.
Very cool. The fact that he never down-played his Gucci watch speaks volumes. Great to see.
So good. An amazing storyteller and Jack gave him the platform and bounce to do that. Thank you.
Heck of a nice guy and you can tell he's very appreciative of life ...Cool collection Curtis !
fantastic collection. Great guy. 10/10
That honey seiko is god tier! That picture of the watch with his grandfather really warmed my heart.
Beautiful KS (King Seiko)! Lovely collection!
That king seiko with burst wood orange dial was everything. Mark my words that watch will have following now...
I like That guy👍 Nice watches and history. Good luck for Olympia 👍
Great interview and guest Jack. What a special collection. Each piece held some meaning (minus the g-shock). It was fun to travel along with him on his watch journey. He never mentioned the fact that he was at the pinnacle of his sport. Never bragged or leaned on his accomplishments. But focused on the impact that others had on him
Pepsi GMT Rolly, grandpops had great style back in the day. great collection ⌚
It's always a huge joy to hear someone go into great detail about each piece in their collection and how they got it, really adds personality to each watch.
Curtis has that cool vibe, he seems to be a really nice guy.
Great episode guys 👌🏻
Beautiful collection in the right way: made of meaningful pieces. And pleased to "get to know" Mr Curtis McDowald, a well articulated, sensible man with a great perception of what is important. Jack, well done!
This episode and the Brooke Sheilds' episode prove that it's stories that make a watch great, not complications, or status, or investment value, or anything else.
Talking Watches is like Humans of New York about watches! Really enjoy it!!
I really appreciate story. The connection between a grandfather and grandson and there shared passion for watches. Each individual watch brings a story that can be continued across generations. Good luck at the Olympics.
what an absolute gentleman.Humble, kind and well spoken. Please Hodinkee! more talking watches with people like this.
Great collection. A true gentleman. Looking forward to him in Tokyo Olympics 🙏⌚🇯🇵🎖🙂
.
P.S
His grandfather watch story was beautiful ⌚🙏
Great collection and interview.
Great guest - I love how he wore the 1675 to fence! 👏🏼👏🏼🇺🇲
For sure this is my favourite episode of Talking Watches. For sure
This dude is such a class act.
Genuine watch enthusiast. Loved his collection and story. Awesome to know that he is an athlete representing US fencing team too. More TALKING WATCHES pls.
That GMT Master is a beautiful watch with a powerful story, but for pure esthetics the King Seiko is what really blows me away! A magnificent watch! Even the strap he got for it is perfect. Kudos!
A phenomenal episode. Curtis, thank you for sharing your watch journey and personal stories.
Excellent episode of Talking Watches. One of your best in while. Really enjoyed his stories.
Watched this several times now, one of my favorite episodes.
This is one of my favorite spots I watch on RUclips. Thank you Hodinkee for keeping this series alive.
That King Seiko is Fire!
Such a great and well curated collection.
Man I loved this. One of the best and most relatable collections I’ve seen on this series. The way this gentleman looks at watches, what he collects and the stories behind each piece are so spot on. As much as I like seeing the collections of the rich and famous I find the collections of people restrained by the more relevant financial bindings that apply to myself so much more interesting.
Awesome collection and great stories. This is Talking Watches and collecting watches as its best.👍
Unbelievable story. Thank you Curtis for sharing your collection.
His voice is so soothing and calm and I love that!
What a cool dude
Brilliant collection.
Beautiful collection, from vintage Tudor to Seiko to Rolex and G Shock. It's so precious ❤️ Thank you for this episode!!
Great Talking Watches episode... A great athlete and a wonderful tasteful collection.
I believe he should get a modern pepsi as his watch to remember his time at the olympics. The blue/red color scheme fits for an American, as well as the fact that its the modern version of his grandfathers watch. Would make for a really cool story when passing them down to his children in the future.
Amazing episode, heartfelt and pure! Jack is great in this role too! Looking forward to more episodes
hello from Tokyo, loved the story of king seiko!
love this guy! He is so humble and sincefe! Best guest so far
This is such a fantastic interview from
Jack. Really great questions to lead to these amazing answers.
Nice!
Grandfather’s watch is a nice heirloom.
What a chill guy and a nicely balanced collection!
Just beautiful. Thanks for this.
Great guy and a great collection. Looking forward to a part 2.
tops video from hodinkee. what a legend in the making, thank your for sharing.
Happy to see you guys being in direct contact again
Classy guy; classy watch collection.
Awesome video! What nice collection and stories behind it. I’m a fan now Curtis, best of luck.
Thank you. A beautiful story.
Great story..... loved the passion for each piece. Well done.
Lovely, thoughtful collection. The King Seiko is just amazing, and the GMT, wow.
Such a sweet nice guy. God bless ya Curtis
Thank you for sharing your story with us.
This is awesome. Finally a guy that's like most of us. Has attainable, yet cool pieces with a story. Reminds me of my own collection.
Great message. Thanks for this
"Every time a serious watch guy gets their first g-shock an angel gets their wings" 🤣😂🤣🤣
exquisite collection and episode. Thank you!
What a great guy, journey, and collection.
One of the best episodes in the series by far.
Nothing flash about this guy and his watches and yet he totally gets it. Need more episodes like this. It's about passion and clearly it started at a young age here
What a fantastic collection. That King Seiko is lovely and a great story to go with it from a real gentleman.
Very cool. One of the best talking watches.
Absolutely amazing story and colection.
Really enjoyed this one! Love hearing meaningful stories behind the watches.
What an interesting collection and genuine enthusiast.
Amazing collection, story and what a gentleman, great episode!
Curtis has a great eye, his collection fits him so well. Loved hearing the stories behind them too!
Fantastic collection. My step father has an old dressy omega from the 80s I think. I'll get that watch one day and I'll treasure it. Well done for a great vid and a really decent humble guest
Great episode. Interesting guest with great backstory. Perfect timing with Tokyo underway.
Glad HODINKEE are giving us so much variety with these new talking watches
Love this collection. Not about the names but the stories which is great, and the G-shock Casioak is that beautiful twist at the end! Love it.
I enjoyed this episode immensely. It’s refreshing and relatable.
Great episode and stories around this watch collection! Nice!
Beautiful. This episode made my day.
Great story and thank you!
