I like to do it without glasses too until I got to be near 40:). Never had any issues. I wear ear plugs and glasses now. Some people are better at things than others. Some people can juggle and some people can't walk on flat ground. I also weld with just a pair of gloves and a helmet while wearing shorts and flip flops, it is the only way I can get a tan.:P

Even when you wear the glasses you still get metal in your eyes its not a big deal. they just freeze them with drops and pull out the little splinter. I've had it done quite a few times as a welder fitter. lol

There is a rod that runs from the throttle to the front of the engine bay, it has a little round bell top and underneath it is a microswitch and the bell is adjustable for starter/throttle timing. Push the pedal and the switch releases. 90lbs of compression at 5500ft was absolutely minimum on these. Things that wear out on those engines are the throttle shaft gets egged out and leaks (check if it wiggles side to side). Governor needs work ,revving it waaaay too high. Mufflers on these get plugged (popping made me think of this).. we used to take a chisel and poke a hole in them next to the outlet to open them up without buying a new one. They make jug and piston kits for these (used to anyhow). My kind of project. ;) Cheers sir!

Old home week for me... I used to be the maintenance supervisor/general director at a conference grounds. I inherited an old Columbia Park Car golf cart. It sounded exactly like yours. The generator/starter needed to be serviced a couple of times, but I never had to buy a new one. It was a fun little maintenance vehicle, and it also was used as a tuck truck for a couple of years taking chocolate bars/candy and soda to people for them to purchase. The poor thing was not coddled, and it took a lot of abuse. I had to weld the frame a few times because of excessive loads, and to pull apart the engine a few times when it refused to start in the spring after bringing it out of storage. I did exactly what you did - I would put the back up on a jack and then start it and run it at full speed to blow the crap out of it (and mice and squirrels) - The end came when somebody ran it into a tree going about 15 miles an hour and broke the front tie rod and pushed the left wheel back about 2 inches... Thanks for the memories Mustie!

Golf carts dont idle. Also I used to work on those old EZ-GO carts all the time at the campground, they are notorious for top-ends needing to be replaced. so much so they sell them as a kit, or, used to. That is earlier than 89. as 89 on forward they put those Robin engines upright. then after about 94 they went to the 295cc and 350cc 2-cylinder 4 cycles which were notorious for burning and sinking the valves, among other things.
