- Out for a ride in my old vw bus I came across this free pile having a compressor, motorcycle lift, and this snow blower. l got the 1st two in the bus and went back with a friends truck for the gilson snowblower, let see why it was junked and if we can fix it.
I’m 14 years old, and I can take apart and fix lawn mowers and small engines all because of your RUclips channel. Great vid!
That is really cool and is a skill that will last a lifetime. More power to your elbow as we say. 👍
Thats being a Man ! 👍
Im 16 and I learned alot from mustie and my grandpa i find junk mowers and snowblowers anything really load them into my truck bring them home and most of the time i can fix em for free
@@TickenLifters I do the same thing sometimes!
Your a fantastic example of the good things that watching RUclips can bring, a lifetime of skills and knowledge, not to mention making you an incredibly useful person for the neighbourhood!
Have a Happy Christmas , and good luck with your chosen career. Try AvE’s channel too for shoots and giggles..... also very informative, and educational but... maybe a little sweary too!
Prudence the Safety Goat would approve! 🎄😷😀
I like how the acorns are still in the parts tray when the carb is being reassembled, as if they’re going back in...
hey, it ran with em in there, don't discredit the mouse mechanic! LOL

He said nuts! I was wondering why a bolt and nut assembly would drop a nut there...
Yes, initially I was looking down the throat of the carb for hex nuts...

Much more engaging and educational than just watching someone doing..... something......
How was he suppose to talk?
@@wileecoyote5749 normally content creators talk to their audience and explain what they're doing in a general way, but this guy asks you stuff that you could only answer if you were right there in his shop, stuff like "do you smell that?"
My father in law has a 1976 monkey wards 8/26. It crapped out last winter. Pulled motor and I rebuilt it for him. Won't upgrade to newer stuff, I'm in trouble by mother in law for fixing it. Says it's to reliable not to keep. Took like 3 days to fix very easy to work on. Getting parts wasn't to bad either I was surprised. Good luck with that old Gilson...
Mustie, i speak for everyone when i say that no video is "too long" i could sit here for 3 hours watching you tinker on stuff, it's like a drug watching something come back to life. but, y'know. a healthy drug.
I agree never too long!!! I hate shirt videos lol
I agree!
I don't like shirt videos either....
I know right? I was yelling, no fix the starter! I'll stay!
Can’t remember the channel, but I enjoyed watching a RUclipsr so much I watched a 45 minute video of paint drying.... was literally the camera pointed at a fresh painted wall and guy talking about random shit for 45 minutes. If I watched paint dry for 45 minutes I’m sure I could sit here and watch him tinker and talk for 3 hours as well.
Good morning from southwest Florida.
The day my snowblower didn't start was the day I moved to Florida lol
Why I moved to San Diego..
The problem with that is that you end up in Florida.
Had a similar machine with a seized piston, snapped the crank bolt and busted the cooling fins because of Mustie1. It was the best day of my life because I tried something and didn't just give up. Engine never did get running, bought another 1 with a good engine bad gear box, made of Frankenstein machine with the two. Thanks for the videos.
Someone liked how Mustie talks to people like they are there with him !!!.....That's nothing I am on my couch answering him back like he is here !
😂😂
Me too!
That's what makes him so special. And sometimes I catch myself answering, too.
New guy , I do the same thing too
watched less than a minute and i already felt the urge to throw a like! man your videos is a treat for me thanks Chief!!!
You should put it back in the driveway with a sign that says "Fixed". That would really screw with the previous owner's mind.
lol perfect idea...make sure the sign points to the house...

Do the 'knock & run away thing.'
Funny. Lmao
With a repair invoice
What a great idea... had a good old chuckle.

I have only recently discovered Mustie's Channel, but I find it so relaxing to watch him diagnose and ultimately fix stuff on a level that most people without fully fledged workshop could feasibly achieve, also the way he asks us for our input, as though we are there with him in the workshop. What a thoroughly enjoyable channel.
I sold the Gilson line of lawn equipment in my shop in the ‘70’s! Never thought I’d see one again. They were a good quality product, never had any problems with them. That 8-26 was a beast in the snow and the B&S engine was indestructible with proper care!
Yes! I’ve been waiting for this to drop. It’s the best part of my Sunday morning here in England.
Same here in Colorado USA.
Same. London UK.
Can you explain why?? Mine is making a Sunday roast 😋
@@matthewm1149 I like that bit too! Chicken today 🍗
It's a bridge rectifier in the start button thing. Probably a generic 35A one. The starter motor will run on both ac and dc, but it will be more powerful on dc, due to the inductance of the windings.
I was thinking that it's a dyno-start so the bridge rectifier gives a predictable polarity for charging a battery.
@@johnkey1682 *FULL BRIDGE RECTIFIER*
@@demandred1957 Sorry, I got my videos mixed up I was thinking of the golf cart.
@@johnkey1682 Lol, sorry you didn't get the joke man. I guess everybody doesn't watch ElectroBoom. Thats his key phrase. Have a good night friend.
A starter motor draws hundreds of amps and would toast a 35A bridge rectifier. The bridge rectifier is probably used in the charging circuit.
That square block where the AC plugs in is a heavy current handling full wave bridge rectifier. It should have 4 terminals, 2 for the AC input and two for the + and - output. The starter motor is probably a DC motor. I use one in a heavy current DC application. There is usually a hole in the middle is so it can be mounted onto metal for heat sinking. Really enjoyed Sunday lunch with Mustie. Looks like a really solid machine that wasn’t too abused and stored under cover. Nice score.
No snow where I live. Yet I still watch and learn and enjoy 58 minutes with Darren. Maybe it's the innuendos? And as for Acorns in carb-u-traitors, we got no squirrels either, so I don't need to check my holes. "There's a joke in there somewhere." 👍
Thanks for taking the time to make your videos.
You would never see anything like this for free where I live, not even a cement block :)
No kidding. Anything I put out on bulk trash day gets swept up before the sanitation guy/gal even gets there.
Same!
I’m beginning to believe people leave things out to see if he’ll feature them in his videos
Same over here, there are no "free" things that are worth a second look.
Somebody would try to sell this for at least $50 'needs work ran last winter's even though it was sitting in the back of a garage for 10 years
Nice to see that the previous owner took pride in this machine.
Once again your bad influence on me continues!!! Ironically a neighbor this past Sunday and asked me if I wanted his 2003 29 inch 9hp craftsman snowblower because it wouldn't start and he was going to purchase a new one. So yeah i took it home. it had sat for 3-4 years. gas tank looked like it was half full of orange juice and smelled awful. After flushing the fuel system and a $13 dollar replacement carb ( I don't own a parts cleaner!) she runs like a champ! I live in NJ and we are expecting our first major snow today. perfect timing!!! Your videos have taught me so much. Thanks and please keep up the great videos!
I"ve been shoveling my neighbors driveway for the last 15 years. Her husband died and she has no kids and isn't in the best health, so it is the least I could do. 3 years ago, she was having a garage sale and asked if I could help move a couple items in her garage. I did, and found not 1 but 2 snow blowers buried in there. I told her that I was taking them and would get at least 1 working. The 1981 Toro 421 that I saved runs like a charm. It is a true workhorse. Heavy as can be. Looks about the same as the one in your video. One man's junk is another man's snow blower.

The amount of free stuff this guy finds is amazing.
I wish i could find that much
@@steviemyles-eu4lf must be toronto, when i lived there things were all over the place, they dont have time to repair lol.
A lot of those types of machines are so expensive over here in Europe that many people have them repaired rather then throw them out. The cheap no-name junk gets dumped of course and there are a lot of crappy lawn mowers because people switch over to those robot thingies. But i have never seen a quality snow blower or generator thrown out unless it was pretty much beyond any economical repair.
Where i live everybody thinks their junk is worth a million dollars.
I had so many old free mowers in my garage (6 of them). the old one i found in a dumpster 20 years ago stopped working. so i tried without success getting the others to work. i f'd around and decided i did not have time for screwing around so i put all six to the curb and bought a new one for $175 (simple one, not self propelled). somebody picked up those treasures. i guess i am a quitter? But i did get a little more room in the garage.
I found and completely refurbished a vintage Magnesium 1970 lawnmower, which works perfectly after a year of using it. All because your videos.
Great video bringing that free item back to life and provide more service hours!
We would just have to remember to bring our own coffee mug when visiting Mustie!

We had a Gilson rear engine ride on mower my dad gave it to his brother when we got a Gilson tractor. My uncle still has the rear engine ride on. Been in a shed for 40 years
Pull it out & do a Mustie on it!
I've been tinkering with small engines and boat motors since I was about 8 years old. I'm now 67 and still love fixing them. You are living proof that a person is never to old to learn as you have taught me a few things that I didn't know! Thank you
Musrie1 you would make a great shop class teacher you are really good at explaining and the way you speak if I had some one like you I might of stayed in school instead of learning things the hard way great job thanks .
Didn't know what you were doing but I enjoyed watching. Snowblower owner for over 50 years and I thank GOD everytime I use it. Thanks 4 sharing bro.👍. Just subbed.👉
Now we need a short video on extension cord maintenance ! 😀 Great job !
In some random neighborhood in Mustie's town: "Hmmm...it's been a week since Mustie has put up a video. I'm going to push that old Gilson snow machine out to the road."
"you know what? Let's drop these two nuts into the carburetor and make sure the kill switch cable is connected somehow. That'll occupy him for a few hours!"
Apart from a £5 bike the odd time I've never seen any free stuff. It's amazing how much free stuff you happen to find in what looks a rural area.
Great rebuild. You have probably helped a lot of people like me out. Thankyou
Glad you explained about the snow bank cutter. I live in Phoenix, Arizona...we don't "do" snow. 78 here today.
Mustie,me encanta tu forma de trabajar y me gusta como le vuelves a dar vida a este tipo de máquinas.veo que también valoras la maquinaria antigua y ves su potencial para repararlas y que sigan cumpliendo su función. I was able to fix my parent's snow blower thanks to these videos, ended up needing to replace the valve seal in the carb, as well as adjust the tension pully for the auger belt. I even gave it a tune up so you can run it on idle which is something it hasn't done for years! I am studying electrical engineering, but it never hurts to be knowledgeable about other things as well.
Hey man, you sound like me. I studied electrical engineering ten years ago and have worked as a maintenance/reliability engineer ever since. Fixing things and understanding how machines fail is absolutely fascinating. Good for you and keep up your studies. If you're a practical guy and it sounds like you are, you're going to have a fun career. Best of Luck. Cheers.
When setting my cutting edge, I like to use paint stir sticks to set the gap. Helps create a nice and consistent 1/8" gap, and definitely makes it a much easier one man job.
Wish I had trash finds like you have in your neck of the woods.

When I first saw the orange paint, I thought it was an Ariens! Lol! Thanks for posting and thanks to everyone that threw in their little tidbits, to help all of us maintain and adjust equipment a little easier! Peace out.
I had one, a 12 horsepower one. It was incredibly good
and took wet snow that was twice as high as the cover
without even slowing down the revs.
However, this is newer. I did not have an electric start.
Mustie, I can't begin to tell you how much I've learned from your videos. Great channel!
Our first snowblower, NE NY, was a Gilson we bought from "Monkey Wards" in the mid seventies. Driveway was 300 feet by ten feet, gravel, in the woods, and that machine was fabulous.
Your teaching so much skill. Just watched a video of a man ceramic coated the inside of his new snowblower, where the snow touches. Did a job. No ice accumulation.
I'm a quaifide technician of" a lot of years,, and you my friend,, know your stuff. Top man.
I always look for a bolt to use my ratchet wrenches on. For what they cost, I kinda wish I could use them more. That first cover bolt was ideal. Thanks for the Sunday vid Mustie.
Man that thing is healthy duty. Can't seem to buy quality like that these days. Great find!
In Colorado the sign would say financing available.
Mustie, Just gotta say, You relate to so many & and now add me. 1/2 your comments I find myself relating - “where’d the pin go” - “Trottal” - “somebodies not happy about moving day” say exact same stuff -Hah- my daughter calls it “dad-puns” - and now my son in law is kicking in hah! Mustie you are a lucky man for my neighborhood nobody put any machine for free curbside
Some old guy owned that machine it’s entire life and took care of it. When he passed nobody new how to run it, it sat until the gas went bad and the squirrels moved in.
I was just thinking that myself.
Agree, or the gent that owned all those items bought them back in the 80’s when he was about 35-40 and now at age 80 he isn’t capable of wrestling the snow blower and has hired someone to clear his drive. The stuff looks like it was taken care of and stored inside .
That's a premium extension cord you've got there! Looks like mine.
good job Mr Mustie1, thank you for your tutorials.
Mustie, the little silver square box in the start switch is a bridge rectifier. Sometimes those things short closed too. Love the videos
#1 most informative and entertaining channel on RUclips. Look forward to every video. Thank you Mustie 1.
The starter may need new brushes. Also the square component is a full wave bridge rectifier. There are two pins that take AC and two to output DC. YOU CAN CHECK IT JUST LIKE 4 DIODES BETWEEN THE PINS. IF YA NEED A SCHEMATIC LOOK IT UP ON LINE THEY ARE EASY TO FIND.
My granddad used to sell Gilson equipment when I was a kid, I don't remember seeing many come back for repairs compared to other brands he sold. Good find once again!
I used to sell it too. Don’t ever remember having to file a warranty claim on one.
I suspect the arcing and sparking is as much due to your extension cord as the starter!
I agree
Did you watch the rest of the video? oops.

That is a standard bridge rectifier rated between 25 and 50 amps. Puts out pulsating dc at 125vdc.
It's a full wave bridge rectifier; or a start caoacitor, "ice, current leads in a capacitive circuit.
It is a rectifier. It has one corner marked "AC", and the other marked " + ". If you look the opposing corners will be marked "AC" and " - ".
electroboom lol
Be very careful servicing this unit as it may actually be a flux capacitor and the plutonium seal could have deteriorated. It’s designed to generate the 1.2gW of current necessary for time travel.
It is what runs the headlight=ac to dc rectifier.
isnt is just a relay? starter motor said 120v 60hz on it.
Great find and free. Squirrel found a spot for the hazel nuts just getting payback at the dude setting traps on his bird feeder. Outstanding video.

Was anyone else expecting another type of nut in the carb intake? Squirrel nuts it is! Good morning all!

Pretty sure that was a tree's nuts, the squirrel's nuts are still with the squirrel . . if not, Poor squirrel.
Yup. Me too.
I thought he was as talking about a bolt nut not a literal nut Lol
I can't believe how clean and non-rusty this thing is for 45ish years old.
Stored inside when not in use. Used in a non-salt environment. Lead based paint is dangerous but very durable.
Hello, thanks for the video. I own The same snow blower, and for mine at the trash can, there is nothing wrong with mine. it had a sheer pin broken. I bought a new one and haven't put it in. for mine to fire once, but it needs work. but your video gave me the information I needed to fix it and things to look at and to serve it. Thanks.
I have my father's 1967 Gilson snowblower that he bought new. Starts first time. It's a beast, though. No safety equipment at all. It got new tires for the first time this year. Originally had Goodyears.
I think it’s later than the 70s. The warning decals and plastic tank make it newer. In the 70s, safety was using what was between your ears not having to read warning labels.
Engine has a Magnetron decal too. That makes it at the oldest a 1982.
@@justinstearns9723 Dude ! thats still 38 years old !
I was going to guess '80s because of the plastic chute.
@@orbitalair2103 That’s nothing to a Briggs. I’ve got one from 1953 that still runs like a champ.

That's what I thought; they did have electronic ignitions back then.

A whole lot of knowledge was dropped in the first 4 minutes. :-)
Used to repair these professionally. Usually the issue is they need a replacement carburetor due to having had gas left in them but they may no longer be available. Sometimes you can get away with a carb kit replacing the seals, pin etc but it is hit or miss. You guys got a good find here. All owner needs to do is keep that carb clean and the engine oiled.
I am 52, I can listen to you do this all day. It is a bridge wave rectifier, converts AC to DC.
A cup of coffee, a piece of cake - and a new Mustie1-video. What better way to spend a cold, misty sunday afternoon with ? :-)
When you said nut I expected hex nut, not tree nut. That was a surprise.
I thought the same thing. How did a hex nut get in there? For that matter how a tree nut? I can imagine the squirrels in Mustie's area stow away hex nuts for the winter.
@@captnmike597 I live near Mustie1. The squirrels and chipmunks around here are plentiful. When the oaks have an abundant acorn drop we find them all over. Particularly the cabin air filter compartment in our Toyota.

BTW you got that one running real nice!
I can't believe that was free....That is in very good shape!!!!
I'm telling you. In today's market it'd be hard to value because things are not made that well anymore. What is available today that is somewhat comparable looks to go for about $1,400 or so. This machine here I'd say is better though.
Don't have to explain Monkey Ward's to me, I used to go there with the family. :)
Growing up (?) that is the only 'big box' store my Dad would go to after sears screwed him over on some camping gear
I once had a MW 2 wheel garden tractor with all the attachments and it was well built.
Yeah. Me too. In our store in Kansas City, they had a “bargain basement”.
Rainstorm and bad design caved in the roof of the MW at the mall in my hometown, mid-70's; they had stuff on blowout sale for months after that. Worked for them briefly in 1979 and they were good people to work for. Sad to see the "real" MW go :-(
I thought he meant is was an actual metal nut from the manifold that got in there somehow... Darn squirrels! 😂
@Dan F, same here, I was genuinely surprised when those two nuts/acorns popped out.
That square thing is a "Full wave bridge rectifier" - it should have two AC pins and then + and - pins. Converts the AC to DC by using 4 diodes.
agreed, it implies that something is running on DC. Since the you said the motor is AC there must be something else that bridge is feeding. I'm thinking the original motor was a DC drive, maybe 12 volts and they converted it so that bridge may not be doing anything now.
Awesome!!!
@@d1bergman My guess is the rectifier is there so the motor will spin the correct direction every time.
First class repair job. Your videos aren't too long. You must be a thrifty New England yankee. I really identify with how you use the same parts if they are still usable, and how you use good used components.
