Hey Taylor - this post is coming from a 70-year-old, old-school, old-fashioned gal who says, "Good for you guys, and don't let anyone pressure you" about finding out the sex of your baby. In my opinion the miracle of birth is made all the more precious when you hear those words at delivery. You are on the verge of an incredible journey!

We have 4 kids and we never learned the gender until delivery! 18 years later I can still hear the Doctor say "IT'S A GIRL!" after already having 3 boys. Thank you for doing it right!

Hey Taylor, congrats! Not sure if you've thought of this but when our first kiddo was born we took his hat that the hospital put on him right after the birth. After they cleaned him up, they give him a new hat. Anyway, we brought that first hat home and gave it to our dog to smell and she took it put the hat in her bed and slept with it until we brought the baby home. She was very gentle and sweet when she got to meet him and they were besties for many years. Wishing you the best. Yay for your family!

As a nervous first-time father, I thought that I wanted a girl first because I thought a daughter would be easier to handle. However, when my son was born, it totally didn’t matter and it was the happiest day of my life and now he just graduated from college. Cherish every moment. It will pass in the blink of an eye.

A breastfeeding mom is a portable kitchen. I took my babies everywhere. Camping, road trips, anywhere I wanted to go that I could assure was safe, I went. Benton and Emma are wonderfully strong names that have strong ties to the trail. Good luck!

Parenting is basically just trying to constantly figure things out. Once you think you have it, things change, children grow, and you start all over again. Staying active is going to serve you well through the remainder of your pregnancy and beyond. Congratulations!

Car camping for Labor Day should be totally doable. Both my boys we took at 6 weeks old for car camping as the first trip. I think it is very wise that you are not set on any expectations for what life after baby comes will look like, what ever you decide is the best way to enjoy the outdoors with your family is what will be best for you and it will be magical whatever you choose to do. Congratulations, motherhood is truly the best adventure!

You have been and will continue to get lots of advice. Mine is to just say congratulations. Pray you have a healthy baby, enjoy and provide the baby with love, patience, laughter, and let your common sense and instincts kick in when needed. No one kisses or touches the babby until after 4 months on the face. Keep hands washed. Most of all, listen to your mom. Seriously, she did a phenomenal job raising you. You and her are lovely together, carry that on and you won't go wrong. ❤😊 again congratulations to you, Chet and Cali

Ok as a mom of 4 I’m going to give you my 2 cents. All you need for the early days is a nice soft carrier like a Tula! Then you can back carry once they are sitting up. I use mine until my littles are too heavy to carry. So like age 4. Such an exciting time for your growing family! The newborn days are an adjustment but enjoy the snuggles and take it one day at a time. Don’t feel like you owe social media anything when it comes to sharing child related news! The internet is a crazy place.

I’m 60 now and still love to hike the AT. I started section hiking as a kid in Girl Scouts! My youngest daughter and I decided we’d hike the AT together and we began in earnest when she was 17.
We have such wonderful memories of each trip, and love, love, love, to reminisce. We head out on another section next month along with her new husband who I introduced to backpacking a few years ago. I fully expect to hike with their future children someday as well. So excited for you, and your husband as you embark on your new, wondrous journey. 😊

Best wishes! Your mothering instincts to wait and meet your child are spot on. You never know what fascinating interests they will bring to your life. Your child will influence you as much as you influence your child. There’s lots of time to do and explore in many different ways. Humans are designed to have many interests! Be safe and healthy and all the rest falls into place.

Just another comment. If you take your child out hiking and camping while they are very young and show them your excitement you will instill a great gift. My father took out family out camping and walking the woods. I got my love for camping and walking from those trips. I was when I was the closest to him. He didn't backpack but he loved to walk on vacations. He never forced me but showed by example. I'll be 72 this July and my children and grandchildren know what hiking is to me. My wife loves to walk miles on beaches with me. She got 76 miles on the AT with me. I have 900. Hopefully, Next year I'll be able to finish. Enjoy the little one because before you know it you'll be going to graduation. May God continue to bless you, your husband and your little one.

That's the carrier I have too. I love it. Baby needs to be able to sit up on their own before going in it which, like you said, is around 6 months. I am on my second baby in the carrier and its one of my favorite things. There is something so wholesome and pure about carrying your baby on your back for hikes. Congratulations. It's life changing.

Congratulations. Very excited to you and your husband. Our first hike with AZ Eagle was at 3 months in the Adirondacks. We stayed in the lodge and hiked in the snow during the day. There are great pictures of him in a backpack hiking in the Grand Canyon. We returned and he spent time on Mr. Rook's shoulders. We had a feeling during last year's AT hike that maybe a little one is in the future. Very happy to meet you during our hike on the AT.

Also enjoy those little moments with the baby. It’s such a sweet time. As I said they grow so fast.

Congrats! I didn't watch RUclips while away most of April, so this was the first I heard of it. It seems you have everything under control, and a good attitude. Even if the "buying stuff" nesting instinct gets the better of you, that is true of everyone with two nickels to rub together. You're human, and being over-prepared for the great unknown, is a very human thing to do.
Just keep in mind that the kid will grow up fine with or without thousands of bucks of gear that will be used for a year or two. So, just buy stuff that makes your own life with them easier, because they're not going to care or remember any of it.
The one area I'd spend more for, is for great car seats, including ones for your parents or whoever else will drive the kid. Don't let anyone but yourself & Chet pick out any car seat your kid will be in. I'm a mechanical engineer, yet my daughter and SIL bought, installed, and trained me regarding each stage of car seat they wanted their kid in. They fell just short of asking for my car's VIN, so they could research the car-seat features of my car's attachment points, belts, etc.
They also got a folding car seat that they can fly with, and is even approved for use in airliner seats by the FAA. A flight attendant freaked out seeing the kid in it, saying it couldn't possibly meet FAA specs. My daughter handed her a copy of its FAA approval, then all the FAs wanted to see it, and were all complimentary for it being not only the real deal, but also so compact she'd gotten it onboard past them without them realizing she'd brought a seat onboard. They're used to spotting bulky child seats and checking whether they are approved in flight.

Maybe a new NH48 category? Completed while pregnant? Don't worry about whether he/she will take to hiking. Toddlers are natural hikers and explorers. My granddaughter took to the trails as soon as she could walk. Of course it helped that dad was a mountain bike trail builder. She has helped cut new trails, build and install wooden bridges, has operated a mini excavator (she asked for one of her own for her 4th birthday) and is on a first name basis with the entire trail maintenance crew. So with Mom's role model I would be very surprised if the kid doesn't follow the footsteps. Peace, Love and Kindness.

I have had 12 pregnancies and didn’t find out the gender before birth. I wanted to rely on my instincts. I was correct with all 12. If husband looks awesome all. The. Time😂 it’s a boy (extra testosterone). If you are weepy a lot, girl (extra estrogen). There is also a difference post partum. With a boy, your body flushes out the hormones fast (about 6 weeks). With a girl, the recovery is slow and steady (about 3 months). Congratulations!!!
