I have loved Bach’s music all my life and heard and appreciated many interpretations of his scores, for such is the appeal and greatness of Bach, but listening to the clarity and precision Sokolov’s interpretation here I have been raised to quite another level. The sheer joy and expressive quality of what Bach was saying in these pieces is truly uplifting. Thank you for letting us share this joy.
Yes I totally agree but spare a thought for the acoustic of the performing space, the timbre of the piano and those recording engineers - they did an amazing job in capturing this amazing performance:-)
Most remarkable is his Allemande. Whereas most pianists use it as a showpiece to show off how fast they can play and destroy the music, Sokolov takes his time to bring out the beautiful harmonies in this beautiful piece. And by the way, he is the perfect alibi for amateurs like myself who can only play the Allemande at a slower pace.
I've never understood why so many pianists play this allemande so much faster than any other--maybe due to Lipatti's recording? Personally I think it can go even slower than Sokolov takes it.
Yes, you are entirely right. I am a recovering Gould addict, and I have really enjoyed Sokolov. He seems like a big arena specialist with lots of sensitivity

When i wanr to hear a sound direct from God or the universal spirit of the divine i listen to the great or greatest pianistt Sokolov play this piece by the greatest composer who ever lived. J S Bach. Sokolov's care and his humility is as unbeatable as is his technique. How lucky to be able to hear him and have my soul repaired!

I totally agree, all these factors play a part. Just listening to this again whilst replying instantly gives me ‘a lift’.

Played on the piano with all the piano’s expressive possibilities for this period.
I like it, but on the harpsichord the piece is more... "bachian".
I agree the piano has expressive possibilities, but the Harpsichord still brings me far closer to the essence of Bach and his subline music.
