Unfortunately, a turkey, on a aluminum foil stick, with no contact with a galvanized steel trash can, that naturally isn't acidic, just plainly doesn't have a realistic enough chance to get your desired zinc seasoning :( This turkey would just be another normal, delicious, safe to eat turkey. Sorry bro
If you have ever welded or braised near or on something that is zinc plated, you know what happens. You get a white chalky looking powder like substance on the metal. Thats from the zinc. Hopfully you were not breathing in any of those rather toxic fumes. No the turkey was not in contact with the cans surface, its the fumes and that white burned off zinc coating that is now all over that turkey, thats the problem.
Symptoms of zinc toxicity include diarrhea, vomiting and fever, starting anywhere from three to 12 hours after consumption. Milk helps neutralize the zinc in the digestive tract and should be given immediately to the individual while professional medical treatment is sought. Happy Thanksgiving
Good thing its galvanized steel and only acting as a hood to contain the heat. Even though there is some risk when cooking with galvanized steel, the risk is mostly only caused by acidic foods. Which a turkey, having zero contact with the steel, and being commonly known to not be acidic, couldn't possibly even come close to having a chance to break down the metal trash can chemically. Happy thanksgiving smart guy :)
Should use muratic acid to remove the zinc from the inside of the can and rinse it out well then coat it with vegetable oil. And it was high on the stake but pin some foil to the top of the bird to not burn it.
Technically they were wrong once they said no chemicals. It's impossible to get a turkey with no chemicals unless you count empty space a "no chemical turkey" since... EVERY THING IS CHEMICALS. Metal to the turkey meat, water to us. Chemical means nothing or saying something has chemicals means nothing to good or bad quality of something.
Loved this video....I bet it was moist because of the high heat seared the outside and kept the juices 'inside'.....chuckled over the hairspray comment....lol...so true! In our family trash can dinners are called Hobo dinners....we use a new alum trash can and put a turkey, pork roast, beef roast, ham and ten pounds of washed potatoes, halved cabbages...whole corn (in season) add water and seasonings....and it's a boiled dinner similar to a clam dinner....drain the broth and spread it out on a paper lined table outside....delicious! TFS Jack!
They used an organic bird , but didn't burn the galvanized coating off the can. You must pre burn the inside of can to get the zinc coating off or it will contaminate the bird!
always build a big fire in you new can and burn the inside off ! this is the best turkey i've ever had. we do one every year . i do creole and butter injector in the bird before it is cooked . absolutely awesome !!!!!!!!!
I have done about a dozen Trash Can Turkeys, I use a cut down 55 gallon drum and add some handles on the sides toward the top, makes it much easier and safer to remove the "Trash Can". I have done turkeys weighing from !6# to 24# and it seems that about 45 minutes is the standard time regardless of the weight of the Turkey. Great Look'in Bird and The Sandwiches looked off the chain!
I made one before, new trash can, but I first burned off the coating. Went thru two fires the nights before to try to clean it off. Didn't get sick but read how it's not a great idea. I have since purchased a set up made for this that does not use a trash can.
you should set a fire in the trash can first to burn off the zinc coating on the can. That way you won't get a metallic taste in your turkey. Also you should seal the can around the bottom to keep from getting any flames inside the trash can. Use only the chimney to start the charcoal and keep it all on the outside of the trash can, don't use lighter fluid so the turkey won't taste like lighter fluid.
wanna a perfect idea? Dig a whole on the ground, put the rash cane, then put burn wood or whatever inside. After that put the meat, checkin, turkey, or what u like. Close it very well that no air can go out, u can burry it to make sure. Then check out in an hour or an hour n a half. It's gonna be amazing. This is how we do it in my country :D
We're here together in these apocalyptic lands, Being chased by a biker gang who's got flamethrowers for hands... But we won't let that stop us from enjoying a Thanksgiving feast (No) Even though everyone we know is deceased. We got a turkey in a trash can. (Turkey in a trash can.) A turkey in a trash can. (Turkey in a trash can.) Has anybody seen our friend Stan? (He was playing the guitar and he had gloves on.) Got a turkey in a trash can. And I bet we'll be singing this song sixty minutes from now... (60 minutes later...) We still got a turkey in a trash can. (Turkey in a trash can.) A turkey in a trash can. (Turkey in a trash can.) We can't locate a woman. (Preferably we find two.) We got a turkey in a trash can. Now let's get it out!
Bi love this video, it looks like something my dad, uncles and grandpa would have done. But there would have been lots of beer and crown royal involved. That turkey looks awesome!!
I been hearing on comments about using galvanized steel trash can that you use on the turkey cooking will contaminate the bird because of fume from the trash can. Did you prepped the can to eliminate the toxins from the can. Because you did not mentioned it on video
Why are you showing barbeque in a galvanized trash can and using it as an instructional vid, we are talking major zinc poisoning which kills. Next time do more research, this kills credibility.
I also started using a disposable Bundt cake pan to catch drippings fits around the stake tossed in neck and gizzards to make that 700 degrees foster the best gravy you can make!!
Hey need to reduce the heat on top....besides that... turkey comes out perfect...also just idea that I have for you...why don't you arrange a cement square spot..for the turkey...protect the ground...pls.. Send me some rosemary. Lol...good luck guys..happy Thanksgiving..the 25 its my birthday...Thanksgiving day celebrate twice...lol
I am hoping to get new stores for 2014. It's going to take awhile to get to that side of the USA. I need to keep praying. Jars are selling out here in the west coast.
Good to hear on the success on west. Look forward to seeing it here. When I ordered mine before, I got nothing but great reviews from my friends who tried it.
Thanks for the idea on this. We tried that this weekend with a home grown 17 pounder we raised we put a farm raised ham on top. Took about 2 hours and was the best turkey and ham I ever had.
My mouth was watering after you showed that awesome sandwich. I would add some apple & jalapeno chutney to make that one helluva sandwich. Btw Jack what brand of hoagy buns were those?
Pro tip: Use a piece of rebar and stab an empty soda can over it. Then push the stake all the way through the bird and let it rest on top of the can. It will help keep it away from the top heat.
The cord burnt, thats why the thermometer quit working... I had a routiserre one do the same thing once when my smoker chips box had a flame up and melted the wire.... the wire can take heat, yeah, but not that MUCH heat.... Im sure they figured it out once they got a closer look at it....
Nothing like a fresh coat of industrial zinc on that turkey for that authentic Cooking with Jack Show flavor. mmm!
Unfortunately, a turkey, on a aluminum foil stick, with no contact with a galvanized steel trash can, that naturally isn't acidic, just plainly doesn't have a realistic enough chance to get your desired zinc seasoning :(

You preburn the inside of the can first. We have been doing this for over 10 years. 😊

thank you - also, high acidity fluids like grape juice (Kool-Aid also) react with zinc and aluminum.
I can't stop watching these videos. They are so bad that they are ironically good.
Salmonella Jack's current health reflects on the years of poor food preparation and handling practices.
I was told to burn wood or charcoal in the can one day before just to burn any chemicals off the can that it may have
Everyone love galvanized turkey!!! For thanksgiving
So that's how Oscar the Grouch celebrates Thanksgiving? Cool to know.
Should use muratic acid to remove the zinc from the inside of the can and rinse it out well then coat it with vegetable oil. And it was high on the stake but pin some foil to the top of the bird to not burn it.
Yes, getting the zinc too hot can produce fumes, which are not particularly healthy.
Didn't wash the turkey and didn't prep the metal trashcan, but hey! we got a free range turkey with no "chemicals"!
Technically they were wrong once they said no chemicals. It's impossible to get a turkey with no chemicals unless you count empty space a "no chemical turkey" since... EVERY THING IS CHEMICALS. Metal to the turkey meat, water to us. Chemical means nothing or saying something has chemicals means nothing to good or bad quality of something.
everything has chemicals. we have calls that do so many chemical reactions
worried about contamination of rinsing a bird, uses same gloves for his oil and spices.
yes my thoughts exactly, then bring inside so everyone in the family can touch it.
Mmmmm, galvanized turkey. Love it.
My buddy Lou will be joining me on my Ford Fiesta Food Drive tomorrow. I'll be collecting food from all over So Cal.

First time I see a rosemary plant as big as the one at my country home back in Italy!

About 1hr 45m cooking time for a 12-15lbs. I've done this several times.
Im not usually a fan of turkey, but that looked fantastic, great work and god bless
You have no idea how happy I get when u post a new video! Greetings from Qatar!
The Thanksgiving video everyone wants to see: TRASHCAN TURKEY. How To Do Trashcan Turkey - Thanksgiving

Please edit this to 1 hour and 45 minutes
I love it! It’s so great how you don’t let your disability hold you back.
Jack looks like a Tabasco bottle!!
Lol this looks like fun maybe next year I'll try to make trash can turkey.
I made one before, new trash can, but I first burned off the coating. Went thru two fires the nights before to try to clean it off. Didn't get sick but read how it's not a great idea. I have since purchased a set up made for this that does not use a trash can.
@Cooking With Jack Show, i hope u and ur family had a good thanksgiving :) xx
Been doing trash can turkey for 8 years, its so good. Do it with smashed potatoes. Makes for an interesting dinner conversation

Even though everyone we know is deceased.
We got a turkey in a trash can. (Turkey in a trash can.)
A turkey in a trash can. (Turkey in a trash can.)
Has anybody seen our friend Stan? (He was playing the guitar and he had gloves on.)
Got a turkey in a trash can.

Now let's get it out!
+Connor Fitzpatrick hahaha...well played sir...I literally JUST watched that too
really had to piss at 9:20! lol. good job Fellas! looks awesome
Bi love this video, it looks like something my dad, uncles and grandpa would have done. But there would have been lots of beer and crown royal involved. That turkey looks awesome!!
Wonder if it would work (and be tastey) if u made beer can turkey (making the same as beer can chicken, but using a 20 or a 40 oz can)
Fun video indeed! Like cavemen cooking! LOL I was hoping for bloopers! Great job again Jack!
I been hearing on comments about using galvanized steel trash can that you use on the turkey cooking will contaminate the bird because of fume from the trash can.
Did you prepped the can to eliminate the toxins from the can. Because you did not mentioned it on video
Is there even any evidence that that eliminates the toxins?
that trashcan idea was good
I like the electric knife cut-up. Reminds me of the movie Scar Face.
That looks really satisfying.
I would like to try this in my living room, what would be the best way to do this without lighting my carpet on fire?
Can't imagine the chemicals that burned into that turkey
You need to prep your trash can before using it by burning the heck out of it first...removing all the toxin from your can first.... Aloha
Why are you showing barbeque in a galvanized trash can and using it as an instructional vid, we are talking major zinc poisoning which kills. Next time do more research, this kills credibility.
That looked phenomenal! I've never heard of this technique, very cool! Awesome video, thanks Jack!
I also started using a disposable Bundt cake pan to catch drippings fits around the stake tossed in neck and gizzards to make that 700 degrees foster the best gravy you can make!!
Nice we do the same in Saudi Arabia looking amazing
Can this work with fish like trout or walleye maybe pike?
Did you use a Galvanized Trash can?
Jack, out of all 3 ways you cook the turkey, which was by far your favorite? nice video
Wow, that really looked moist and delicious! Thanks for sharing this cooking method!
Looks like a great time was had by all.
You made Jesus cry
Make sure you burn out the barrel first to remove the coating
Shine Jesus Shine! Amen! God Bless you, brother!
another great example of taking 15 minutes to define what could be explained in three. Thank you UTUBE for giving the overspoken a voice
Never tried this before.... Looks, if anything... Tons of fun!
Awesome video Jack! Such a nice and gentle guy Lou is.
Un repas qui commence dans la poubelle. Bonne appetit
Yay galvanized turkey yummiii, what's next radioactive mash potato
Drumsticks FTW
The color on that bird looked awesome. Never seen one come out of an oven like that!!!!
Wow that looks incredible. I just got a po man grill and can't wait to do something similar to this.
Cool jack have a great thanks giving thank you
that's the biggest rosemary I've ever seen!
I would love to know what this cost?the tin foil on the ground alone probly 30 bucks
I bought it at restaurant depot for $25 for 1000 feet. That was a small amount. Turkey was $40. Garbage can was $24. Charcoal $20. Total was $109.
holy smoke! Thank you so much for the honest reply.I love your show very much. You seem like a very nice guy..
Great video. How goes the Walmart situation? Looking forward to being able to buy it in Indiana
Rocdenindy so glad to hear that. I just love people to try it first time. their face lights up. :D
This. Is. Awesome. Such a cool idea, even if you did have a couple hiccups along the way.
man that looks good.
damn I love old school cooking! so fun to watch :D
I can use this as a science project 😀👍
WOW, that looked amazing. I would drive down to Cali just to have some! Though from the pictures I thought the fire would be bigger
I haven't tried it yet but will soon.
I cannot believe there was no alcohol involved here. :)))
That looks really good!
I knew it was going to be most. Looks so good. The sandwich looks delicious.
Jack is a big guy.
Hahaha! Looked like a lot of fun! I'll be sticking to my oven but this was an adventure worth watching. Looked delicious and moist!
How long did you cook it. Duh
Don't rinse your bird, but do touch your bird and then open and pour all your seasoning without washing your hands. Science.
what about rinsing your beef? Do i do that?
not sure. Lou just told me about turkey.
Why didn't you burn off all the oils and chemicals on that shiny new trash can first before cooking with it?
That looks toxic to me!🤢🤮
Pro tip: Use a piece of rebar and stab an empty soda can over it. Then push the stake all the way through the bird and let it rest on top of the can. It will help keep it away from the top heat.
The thermometer is probably covered with zinc. So therefore will not work properly
great video jack!
Smokin with Myron Mixon is a good book.
I will check it out. Thanks. how exciting
Your welcome. He's the best competition BBQ cook.
can you say galvanizing poisoning?
+Jim M can you say "he's still alive and not poisoned!"
I am a welder and I assure you, galvanization is extremely toxic.
+sprontos stainless steel, Maybe sprontos , being a welder, should go intoo producing safe, turkey trash cans. i'd buy one for sure.
+Jim M that was my first thought... DO NOT do this people!
Broxty Now that was mean, you might survive, if you are way down wind.
You forgot to burn off the coating of can did anyone get sick?
MAN! I SO want to try that!
sorry if mist it but,huw long time ? i thinking do dat !
I see your starbucks cup lol
love the look don't like a dry bird
Awesome video Jack!!
The cord burnt, thats why the thermometer quit working... I had a routiserre one do the same thing once when my smoker chips box had a flame up and melted the wire.... the wire can take heat, yeah, but not that MUCH heat.... Im sure they figured it out once they got a closer look at it....
+sleeksalmon I think it's a 450 degree max.
Jack it did look great but I know now this is one way I will never cook a turkey!!! Take care
Never mind the burnt part, it will always taste great. Turkey is turkey. But you must keep Turkey away from Russia, especially since they got Hungary.
Awesome stuff my but a little char not bad at all I think it's good!!!
WOW, GREAT VIDEO MAN...!
nice video; I dont think i'd try it; too messy; but it was interesting. thanks!
There's a device called an Orion cooker, basically the same method.
i ate some trash can pizza once, it wasnt very nice lol
Probably my old garbage can caked inside would do the job? Guess the heat will burn it really clean.
