I grew up with Donovan's version. Half a century later, this one moved me to tears.

So, I get that they updated the lyrics to make them relevant to a lot of the current listeners, which I actually think is a great idea. That being said, I just don't understand one of the changes, that being "the reds" to "his soil". I don't get it, it's starts out naming different religions, then, it goes on to naming different political parties...so, originally it's comparing democracy to communism ("the reds"), but in their version it's comparing democracy to...."his soil"??? I don't get it

Seeing how the USSR (Reds) no longer exists, they changed it to fighting for "his soil", which would be any person who thinks that they are fighting for their land, country, nation etc. My sense is that is is no longer democracy vs communism, but the people against the oligarchy...

@@RGI1954 but "reds" doesn't only refer to the USSR, but communism in general. (For example, the Chinese communist army is called the red army.) And, I think communism vs. democracy is very relevant to our times.

@@rm8824 Well, I would submit that neither communism or democracy exists in the world at this time. China has a blended ideology while much of the west is under fascism, especially the US. The US has never been anything other than a playground of the oligarchy which profits off of the backs, bodies and misery of those at home and especially those in other nations... "soil" is as good as any other term, as young men and women continue to be programmed into believing that their "soil" is better than any other soil and worth killing and dying for...

I listen to this as India and China are almost at war. I wanted to go into the army and I wanted to die a martyr, a hero with a 21 guns salute to my grave, but I chose a different life. I come from a religion who prides itself on being a warrior. However, I am now a changed man who calls himself a pacifist and a believer of non-violence. I sit here, conflicted 'cause the truth is I wouldnt even be here if it wasn't for the war, if it wasn't for conflict and if it wasn't for disharmony.
Maybe our species wouldnt be here. The universal soldier made the universe happen and I do not know what to do with these realizations. All I want to do is go to bed and go sleep, but the feeling of helplessness keeps me up. If people didn't offer their bodies to die, there would be no wars, but also, there would be no Universe and I do not know what to believe in anymore. I wish I could hug the Universal soldier and apologize for judging them, but sit with them and be with them- in silence and without judgement

I'm in Australia and at the moment our SAS are being accused of crime for what they did in Afghanistan.
Our politicians sent them their in the first place and we voted for the politicians.

@@chuckmaddison2924 Oh that sucks and thats literally the reason why my dad never wanted me to be in the army. Politicians make soldiers fight for their own agendas, and soldiers are people who go, "yeah mate, id like to die due to my hero complex." Hahah.. Too radical an opinion I think.
I did my post-grad from Canberra.. I am quite aware how Australian government literally volunteered to be the first one to send their armies in Afghanistan.

@@pawandeepkohli3486 Something else that will knock you over.
I don't live far from the SAS home base and at times have to go in there for work. You could never guess who is manning the entry to the base to keep secure........
Wilson's parking yep the company that operates some of the car parks around the city. I hate to think how they would deal with a terrorist attack, probably let them in.

@@chuckmaddison2924 Really? The Wilson security.. Hahaha.. I have seen them around malls and parking areas usually. That does known me over and blow my mind to pieces. That is so naive. But then again... Maybe they are trained better and deal with all sorts of securities?
That is truly fascinating information. Also, Australia has way strict laws when it comes to a terrorist attack. Lone wolf attacks are still possible, but due to australia's gun laws, lone wolf attackers cant really do much. That is me doing wishful thinking because Australia is a fair bit of a sane and friendly country as compared to other countries. I made some lovely friends down there when in street, and I am a Sikh btw.. so yes, I really enjoyed my time in Australia and love(d) that country to bits
