    And we continue with our coverage of the Phillips auction to be held this weekend in Geneva and this time with no other than Aurel Bacs, Head auctioneer of the house.
    We will go over some Rolex watch, of course, but also an interesting and original Breitling Superocean, as well as a pilot Longines watch which probably never left its original box. But naturally we did include some Patek Philippe in this selection! Photos below.
    Enjoy and Viva Watchmaking,

    I could listen to Aurel Bacs talk about watches all day long! He's simply amazing at telling a story and his passion and love for watches shines through!
    Edit: Not sure what's up with all the "never worn" description of watches that clearly look like they've been at the very least lightly worn.
    Not sure why Marc didn't press Mr. Bacs on this.

    Brilliant video. Us watch collectors dont just purchase watches to tell the time. For us this hobby gives us stories from why we buy a particular watch or where the watch comes from and also how it makes us feel when we wear it. That's why I watch this watch channel.

    The Patek Reference 530 is sublime- easily my favorite of the lot. The Longines is a fascinating piece- does seem odd that it wasn't worn (though it looks to have some wear). As always Marc, great work! And thanks to Aurel for bringing them to the show and sharing his stories. :)

    I like the stories behind the watch owners makes it more interesting and this is a very important part of collecting. I think that having a watch that was owned by a historical figure greatly increases the value.

    That Aurel Bacs is one smooth character. I was like a deer in the headlights.
    If he talked it up enough, he could probably get me to buy a watch I already own.

      For precious metal cases that old to be that minimally scratched means, the watch was barely worn, which, in auction terms is as good as never worn.
      Remember these are collector's pieces at an auction, you won't get the same sales pitch like the one you get at a boutique store.

    Superlatives... ;) Yes. However, the watches are in excellent condition, but not completely "unworn". The 5508 looks awesome and I have never seen a better one. The 8171 looks awesome and again, I have never seen a better one. Nevertheless, both have been very slightly worn and you can see clearly the traces of wear. Not sure why he is making such claims. I agree though that there may not be any better ones anywhere out there. Meanwhile, truly unworn means they have no traces of wear. I have watches that really have not been worn and they look different than these. They are also preserved differently and look really factory new even after 50 or more years.

  • @seanlyons8721
    @seanlyons8721 3 года назад

    What you really want to look for when examining the condition of a vintage watch is primarily overpolishing. You want to see sharp crisp edges and deep distinct hallmarks as these will come off during a sloppy polishing job. The watches in this video are in extraordinary condition and the minute scratches that some commenters have noted are really nothing to worry about. I would much rather see a watch with light scratches but unpolished than a shiny mirror polished one with deformed lugs and soft edges.

    • @salimtufail
      @salimtufail 5 лет назад

      3:44 It is not a perpetual calendar. It's a triple calendar. The word "perpetual" in a Rolex, I believe, refers to the automatic movement.

    How do these watches get so scratched up if they have never been worn? Is this how they came from the factory or is it the way they were stored?

  • @teamsalvation
    @teamsalvation 5 лет назад +3

    There are a few watches that were never warm, never used, kept in storage for decades....yet, in spite of being well protected, I saw “wear” on the dial, bezel, etc. The Patel for example.
    Why is that? Are these watches that susceptible to the elements that even in storage they degrade? What does that say about their durability?
    I am not belittle the makers or brands, but I do question.... thanks! As always love the videos!

    Mr. Bacs' jacket sleeve buttons are bugging me. Back in the days you needed real sleeve button holes to be able to roll up your sleeves for work, hence the name work and surgeon sleeves. This has changed, and now a day it’s more about style than anything else. Some stylists say you should, as with the suit jacket, leave one button unbuttoned. This is truly a matter of taste; some like the style, some do it to show the world they have a tailored made suit, and others think its unnecessary and a way of "bragging". If you were to leave one button unbuttoned, it should be the button closest to the hand.
