Dude this game is awesome in VR Is crazy to get close to the characters, it's a mix of Diorama and Tabletop at the same time Honestly, for me, it's the best version of the game Fire Emblem on 3DS with the 3D effect turned on was pretty awesome, but this one is a step forward I hope we see more RPGs on Quest, I bought day one just to support the game
Yes!!! It's great to see Stereoscopic 3D being showcased for less conventional use cases. I used to love playing King's Bounty, Mount & Blade and other PC games on Nvidia 3d Vision, and even watching anime with VorpX was a completely new experience. There are developing ways to play so many older games in a whole new way. For example, strategy RPGs like King's Bounty was like seeing animated 3d figures on a chessboard. So cool.
@@SuperDerek To clarify, the ones I played were the 2007-2014 versions, and not JRPGs. But the beautiful music and stylized worlds were still soothing to lose myself in. And I got it working on Nvidia 3d Vision which is obsolete now, but hear similar functionality for older games is being recreated with VR headsets - i.e. UEVR for most Unreal engine games, VorpX for others, VR/3D mods and so on. But haven't had time to take the plunge into VR myself yet to test myself.
@@Taikaru Hi there, fellow Nvidia 3D Vision user =) Games in 3D still blow my mind, 10 years after first trying the tech. Octopath Traveler and the Trails-series look amazing and the stereoscopic 3D allows one to see how incredibly detailed the art in those games actually is. It’s just that the flickering of the Nvidia shutter glasses is pretty unhealthy for the eyes. I guess this is where VR comes into play soon.
@@Gryzor88 Hey!! Nice to run into someone who actually knows what I'm going on about. :D Sounds like you have more recent experience than I... mine ended when my DLP died many years back, and I never had another display compatible with 3D Vision since. Brightness was the biggest issue due to shuttering each eye half the time, essentially halving perceived brightness. Trails or Octopath sounds like they'd be so But with most VR glasses, each eye has its own display so brightness should no longer be halved... In fact, many support HDR and I've heard stories of people being blinded by the sunlight in Microsoft Flight Sim for example, so likely even brighter than our old displays! But I always make it hard on myself and am a Linux gamer now, which most headsets don't work with. So I'm waiting for Valve to release an Index 2 or something before jumping in. Here's hoping it's soon!
@@Taikaru Hehe, yeah brightness can be an issue, even on my monitor. I’m still addicted to 3D Vision though and just tried Dragon Quest III. It looks mindbogglingly beautiful in stereoscopic 3D, but the lighting is broken, with clouds rendering in one eye only. Still on the fence regarding VR, but I’ll bite once there’s a headset that ticks all the boxes. I’m a Linux gamer too with my Steam Deck :P
The more expensive Quest 3 version has pancake lenses which eliminates the issues fresnel lenses have. It should be pretty clear from edge to edge, not like with fresnel lenses that have a pretty small sweetspot and gets blurry fast outside of that clear center. Since you have the cheaper model, get used to looking around with your head and not your eyes. That way you don't notice the blurriness as much.
@@SuperDerek Just make sure to let the honeymoon phase pass before making your deep dive. Although the tech is there, you don't see many high profile games to really grab your attention. I think Triangle Strategy is actually the first noteworthy JRPG in VR. Granted there are plenty of excellent smaller scale games to keep you occupied, but at the end of the day are you really going to play them over something like Metaphor: ReFantazio? Probably not.
I can smell Square porting the other Unreal Engine based IPs to VR/MR too. Live-A-Live, the Octopaths. All of which you can run off PC in VR with the UEVR mod without buying the game again, but that's dialed for a gamepad and not proper VR motion controllers, which takes some of the fun out of it like proper Triangle Strat from the store. Live-A-Live was _particularly_ well suited to VR, and is easier to play in short bursts.
Man, Dragon Quest XI I believe it's full immersion VR with UEVR... looking at dioramas with all little details in a section of a scenery and sprites is fine, but not as mind-blowing as actually being in those worlds, looking around and marveling at it
Dang man, you're looking great these days. Thanks for sharing some VR content. Pancake lenses definitely make a huge difference in vr viewing, but maybe one day they'll bring Octopath to it.
Legitimately, if this becomes something I _really_ dive into, I might consider selling my 3S to finance the upgrade to the Meta Quest 3 with _its_ pancake lenses. I can already tell that Fresnel just ain't it for me.
Thanks dude! And yeah, I had no idea this was going to be nearly as cool when I first saw the trailer. Now it's got my mind buzzing with possibilities!
Haven’t finished the video yet, but I’ll definitely be trying this. It’s hard to convey if you’ve never tried VR before but this seems so dope. I imagine it’s like playing a living board game. It’s something you really can’t experience anywhere else. I think another good example is that it’s like looking and interacting with a live miniature opera or stage play. Seriously, this has to be one of the fascinating steps forward towards experiencing 2D pixel art turned based RPGs. And agreed I wouldn’t be able to help myself but walking around overlooking the game in VR. Nice vid! Didn’t know this was even coming to the Quest. Also!! I haven’t seen a video in this channel for a while but sweet Mary! You’ve aged backwards like 15 years, no kidding! You’re like a nerdy Leonardio DiCaprio in his prime, It’s honestly inspirational! Keep up the good work!
Thanks Manny! It's really hard to convey the feeling of experiencing VR, the dimensionality, and how it feels to be in the same space. And yeah, it almost feels like a pixel-art war-game like DnD or Warhammer laying there in the same room, it's nuts!
This is cool. Love the "diorama effect" that VR can have. They could make it next level if they made the characters look like actual figures on a board game, but still maintaining the animations.
Great video. The 2001 reference was Rad. I wish this worked on my kiddo's Quest 2. Will have to wait for a bit for my last path. I finished 3 fo the 4 and just need that last Utility ending.
I've been waiting for a Square-Enix RPG on Quest forever - I thought Dragon Quest on Meta Quest would make more sense, but happy with Triangle Strategy anyway. Feels like a worthy follow-up to Final Fantasy Tactics. Motion sickness is not a problem in stationary diorama-style games like this or Demeo, Lego Bricktales, Moss. It's only there for full immersion with in-game motion - but then again, you overcome it after awhile. Btw, walking around on your feet in a diorama like this would be better with full guardian rather than limited circular one. Also, image stabilization is an option in Quest video capture itself. Indeed 2D video gives no clue what the experience feels like...
Thanks for the feedback! I'll need to look up the stabilization feature, for this I was streaming the video straight from the Quest to a web interface, where I recorded two video sources in sync via OBS Studio. I do think my stabilized footage is a bit glitched though because of a frame-rate mismatch thing. It's weird, I kept trying to set up my room within Quest, but it kept switching to the circle? And I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Literally had the Quest for zero days before recording, so I'm still a super-noob! Hoping to wrap my head around this better soon!
This a great video. But as an aside you REALLY need to get a new headstrap, ideally one that's designed to balance the weight. Your neck will thank you. Many headstraps also have built in batteries. I'd also recommend some hand steps for the controllers so you can let them go without dropping them.
The Quest 3 is definitely the one to get, the 3S Fresnel Lenses really ended up bugging me after all of the reading segments, and the Quest 3 (no S) has better "pancake" lenses. Good luck!
@@SuperDerek Actually thanks for pointing it out, I know you were mentioning it in the video but it didn't click that they were different until I read your comment, thanks for the save! Now to talk her into the more expensive one😨
VR definitely isn't my jam, and I admit I was very confused when this was announced, but I think it's a really neat application of the tech! Also, I love that the googly eyes on your VR headset make the cameras look like freckles :3
Love this VR series every time, Derek!😍 I’m excited to see what the next episode will be like though. Can't wait! By the way, it would be awesome if you could check your inbox - we've sent you an email!🤗
The problem with motion sickness is not that it moves when you move. The problem is when you stay still and everything around you moves... So you should try your "guts of steel" on some other game :-D.
Could you let me know what you're listening on? I've started mixing my audio with bad speakers in mind lately, since a lot of people watch on cell phones these days. I'm still working to strike a proper balance, thanks for the feedback.

I tried every Gaming console from Nes to modern day. Quest 2 from what I bought for $300 gave me more than any $2k plus device can ever gave. With AR/VR you can have 20 plus floating flatscreens around your surrounding room and that basic function alone should tell you how powerful these sort of headset devices can do which is absolutely impossible with flatscreen devices. Meta Quest include everything to run, vr motion controllers can work in a lot of ways, decent mic and speakers built in. No tv, pc, or any other device required.
