- Here is the desert town of your imagination. Surrounded by sand and only the most resilient of vegetation that can sustain endless hours of extreme heat and strong winds in the Mojave Desert, Barstow, CA is located in the middle of nowhere. Yet, the spot right on the axis Las Vegas - Los Angeles is strategically well chosen. The railroads rule: Four BNSF and Union Pacific subdivisions (Mojave, Cajon, Needles, Cima) connecting the west to the east and the south to the north terminate here. Barstow is an important crew change point on the BNSF Southern Transcon and it has a relatively large yard. All Los Angeles area and port bound traffic goes through here - up to 100 BNSF, UP, and Amtrak trains in 24 hours. This video is supposed to give an idea of this always busy railroad hot spot, which is one of the "hottest" in the entire country.
Trains with mid-DPUs always amaze me more than those with rear-DPUs (Idk why)! Like that UP westbound intermodel train at 2:56.
Terrific catches/meets! I definitely like the intermodals with the DPUs.
Thank you :)
Thanks for sharing this video. Nice job. I live in Barstow. My dad and brothers worked for Santa Fe for many years. The area in front of the Amtak Station used to be the main switch yard. I spent the summer of '68 working there as a switchman. In 1973 switching and classifications moved to the new Hump Yard to the west of the bridge and 'B' Hill. There used to be a Yard Master tower next to the bridge. I remember every time I drove over the bridge I would take a quick glance into the tower windows to see if my dad was working. That bridge will be coming down in the next few years to be replaced with a newer, safer bridge.
You're welcome! Wow, that's great. It must have been even more exciting in the Santa Fe times. It's a pity the tracks in front of the station were removed. Whereas train watching from there is still fun, action always appears to be somewhat remote. One can hardly hear the trains when the wind blows. But I enjoyed my visits to Barstow on this trip. It's a nice town.
I regularly watch the South West Chief #3 come through Barstow on the live cam. It’s great to see the place through your perspective too. Keep up the great work.
Barstow is a great spot to watch trains. Filming is somewhat difficult, at least from the platform, because the tracks are rather far away. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
It looks like rail-fanning wasn't the only thing that was hot! Thanks for sharing...
That’s true lol. You’re welcome!
The intermodal train with eight locomotives was crazy good. It's great there are lots of midtrain helpers and rear DPUs in your California videos. This is another beautiful video, I really enjoy this series. I hope there will be more episodes in the near future. :)
Cool, great you like it. Yep, there will be more.
Великолепно! Жаркая у вас в Калифорнии погода, наверно.
Thanks! Yes, it was very hot there...
Sweet video! Awesome catches! I saw up 4014 for the first time today in West Chicago. That thing is huge!
Thanks. Very cool!
Now I know why it is a hot spot and I am not talking about the weather . Great video !!!!!
Lol, exactly. Thanks!
Awesome video. Great angles and great videoing techniques. Keep them coming. 😎😎😎 really cool.
Thanks! Some of it was dictated by the strong winds lol
@@mbmars01 That's Awesome. Keep up the Great Work.
Thanks, I will after a short break.
Excellent video. I don't know if I could take the heat at that time of year. I guess you go through a lot of water.
Thanks! Yes, it was hot, but it wasn't that bad, actually, as there was a strong wind blowing all the time.
Spent many an afternoon in Barstow. Shot UP Centenials, ATSF GP-40X's, U-Boats, Amtrak's Desert Wind and Southwest Chief, and occasional saw the repowered Alligators in the 80's. There at the Harvey House, on that bridge in the background, and by the McDonalds at the east end of town.
Cool, it must have been an interesting time.
@@mbmars01 It was. Been 30 years since the last time I was there, need to go back.
It would certainly be very interesting to see how things have changed in this period.
My apologies for not being able to say love the videos and keep making them. I was quite bussy.
Come on, don't apologize. I know you like the videos :)
Barstow is one busy place! Thanks for sharing!
You’re welcome!
Love the way you give a locomotive roll call before they pass.
I’ve been a subscriber for a while yet I hadn’t seen any of your videos. Now I know why, I was ‘unsubscribed’ from your channel (not by me).
Good you like it. I don't know why you were unsubscribed. It wasn't me either. I'm glad you're back!
Great video, my roommate at the time and I spent an afternoon at that yard in 2009
Thanks!
MBMARS thank you for this video. I like how you zoomed on the trains then pan backwards to get a better look at the train it gave you a sense how the trains really are. I have a question trains going through the yard not stopping how where they going? Thanks I have a blest watching and looking at your videos. I looked at one of your old videos it had over a million hits it was the video drama caused by CSX. Thanks again and take care
Thank you very much for your nice feedback! You know how much I appreciate it. Keep watching! There's so much to discover, particularly in the older videos.
I miss trains!! Grew up in Daggett and my dad worked for SF. I don't get to see many trains where I live.
Oh I can imagine. Where I live I can hear but not watch trains which is annoying at times.
How nice to be in Barstow to capture all this action. At 12.38 on the video is a rather unusual east bound " Monsta" train. I think this one was close to 17,000,ft. Note all shipping containers, some wags refer to this type of stack train as Wal-Mart express. Thank you for your time . Cheers, Chris Perry.
It may be two trains combined. Not sure, though. Thanks!
great video, looked to hot even for the jackalope to be out running around
Thanks, lol 😄
All right you're actually filming in my home state. That's awesome, I live in LA. Let me know when you get there at too. Great video bro.😉👍👍👍🤙🤘
Wow, that's cool. I actually briefly visited LA on this trip. Thanks!
@@mbmars01 Sweetwater part?😁
No, more like the hills near Hollywood. I didn’t have much time and traffic was horrible even though it was a Sunday.
@@mbmars01 if you went to North Hollywood there's a section on Coldwater if you go right above Sherman Way. You can catch some trains there. Like the Metrolink the Amtrak Anna some of their cargo trains.
Good to know! I didn’t railfan in LA, though.
Awesome video barstow never sleeps
That's right! It's as busy as railroading can get.
Nice video man I see you railfan on Hinkley Rd huh and thats where I railfan....
Thank you! I'm not surprised; there aren't really many easily accessible spots in the area...
Excellent video, I will have to try there.
Thanks! Yep, it's an interesting area to visit.
Hot day in the high desert. I can feel the warm wind just thinking about it.
Haha, yes, although it should also be hot in Chicago by now, isn't it?
@@mbmars01 good on you and thank you....i know it must be 102 with a heat index of THE SUN IS TRYING TO MAKE TOAST WITH MY FLESH!.....out there!
@@mbmars01 I live in central California, and it's hot here too.
I have been here before. It really is a great spot to railfan.
Yep, it is. Watching is great, but taking pictures requires some effort, because the tracks are not close to the station.
One thing i would suggest is getting a wind sock or something for the microphone.
I like the wind noise as part of conveying the authentic experience, but I have reduced it in the post-processing. I don't think it's annoying.
MBMars !!! Do you have any idea as to the inside the lead loco to see what controls & monitor system that is installed to control those remote locos in the consist as all the lead locos are hooked together with electric cables ??? Makes one wonder how to control all speed up & braking on the grades with remote control only !!! Great shots & KEEP IT COOL & SAFE !!!
Yes, I have an idea, because I have been in cabs. I don’t think it’s too difficult to control the other units. It’s rather earthbound technology, but careful handling by the engineer is certainly advisable. I rather wonder how they managed with multiple steam engines and crews back in those days.
@@mbmars01 OKS !! YEPPER !! The 'ol' days are gone & so are the ''OL'' engineers all though,,would like to see the ""UP"" Engineers running the'' 844' & Either the ''challenger""" Or "" Big Boy "" in a 3 loco lashup ??? Only saw it on the train show on RFD channel !! You have shown what you could on the ''UP" & its great too !!! Keep the videos coming & as always KEEP IT SAFE The History channel had a series on "" Extreme Trains "" And showed what it took to be in the ""PUSHER LOCOS "" at Horseshoe curve in PA.!! As you say quite a balancing act to keep control & not derail the whole train !!
Yep, that's true. It would be amazing to see them all together. I'm not living close to a UP line and try to avoid large crowds for filming reasons. So, these steamers still have to wait... Regarding the control of the big trains, I guess the true challenge is to handle them in the mountains, which we'll be able to watch in future videos from SoCal.
@@mbmars01 OKS !!! That'll be GREAT !! As always waiting for more & KEEP IT SAFE !!
Thanks for the fine video. As usual BNSF has boring power.
Thank you! Well, for me there's more than just the power that makes railfanning exciting. I like to see the trains in the environment in which they operate and that's different in the west compared to what we are used to in the east.
Keep 'em coming!
Yep!
Cool catch. Come see Doner pass sometimes.
That's definitely something I would like to do in the future.
congrats on 20k mbmars01!!!!!
Welcome To the Club
Thanks! It's good to see that many people are interesting in these videos.
@@mbmars01 ik me to im like ur biggest fan
That's nice that you like the channel. Keep watching; there's a lot of cool stuff to come.
@@mbmars01 don't worry. my favorite train that u caught jeez there are alot was NS 8101. It's ur Favorite Heritage Unit And Is Mine As Well
Very cool. It's still my favorite among the NS H/Us.
How much dose a train driver make in the USA.
Usually 100k a year
@@TheDoubleWLife fuck not bad at all is that for all passenger trains too
The marvel in socal is perfect on railroads routes be coolest
The most amazing routes are in the mountains and we'll get to these in future videos.
So this summer SoCal and last summer you did MT and the PNW yeah? Which did you enjoy more? Faster trains in the south, but MRL and helper units in the north.
Also, on trains with >6 units, could you maybe leave the list up a few seconds longer?
Thanks for the great video as always!
Well, there were also other excursions in the past years. Since the areas I visited are completely different, I can't say which I like more. There was no rain in the southwest, which is better for filming. Thanks for the hint, I try to keep it in mind. You're welcome!
i've always enjoyed your content, but the quick cuts and lack of tripod get me dizzy.
Thanks! Long shots in strong winds are impossible with a tripod unless you use a heavy bag with rocks to stabilize it, but there are no rocks in the desert...
How do you get the csx abbeville subdivision scanner
I got my BC125AT from amazon. With it you can scan all railroad frequencies including the CSX channels on the Abbeville Sub (160.290 MHz, 161.100 MHz).
Nice Catches And Great Video. Also First Comment
Thanks!
good video is Barstow busy
Thanks. Barstow is very busy, busier than most other places, at least railroad-wise :)
Virtual Railfan has a neat 360 cam that I like to watch out there that is active all the time, MBMARS. Have you watched the train action on the 360 cam out there yet?
Virtual Railfan sucks! You have to wait for trains and endure the mindless chatter from the Europeans telling us how great their railroad systems are.
Yes, I know there's a railcam in Barstow. I think it's at the museum/station, where I also filmed most of my material. Maybe I was "live" on it on those days lol.
@@jacks4733 Ah................shut up, you crazy hater. I love the Barstow Cam and your negativity is NOT needed, ya dig?

Very cool!
Bar sends alot more bnsf Goodies all in California
I like train videos on RUclips 👍
Good :)
Nice video! Sorry if I sound dumb but what does credit unit mean?
Lol I do sound dumb
I just didn't know what they were
I have already answered the question by responding to a different comment. Please check.
mbmars01 ok
Cool
:)
What is a Tier 4 Credit Unit? Thanks for your consideration..
In 2015, the Tier 4 emission standards became effective for the major railroads. Any locomotive purchased since has to be compliant. However, railroads had banked credits for using environmentally friendly equipment before Tier 4 and can now use these credits to still buy non-Tier 4 compliant models. These are called Tier 4 Credit Units.
@@mbmars01 cool I didn't know that
Great video! How can you tell if it's a tier 4 "Credit" unit?
Thanks! Well there are series of road numbers used for these units.
