- Hot... are not only the temperatures in California's Mojave Desert, but also the rails of the BNSF Southern Transcon. The Needles Subdivision, which is featured in this video, sees among the heaviest railroad traffic in the entire US. More than 70 trains traverse the desert and mountains on this section of the southern transcontinental railroad. We follow this line westward from Needles, CA to Barstow, CA, 167 track miles. Enjoy!
