- Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward were that rarity: a happily-married Hollywood couple. But the story of their life together was partly myth, as explored in the new HBO Max docuseries, "The Last Movie Stars." Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz talks with actor Ethan Hawke, the series' director, and with Paul and Joanne's daughter, Clea Newman, about how the couple's seemingly perfect life had its share of turbulence off-screen, and what made the couple's stardom and marriage unique.

This isn't just a documentary about movie stars, it's a documentary about marriage. I am really looking forward to seeing this and learning from it.
You and me both
Well Said...
Me too….
@Roy Bass you didn't watch this did you?
@Frances Bass they do talk about it, half way into the video 🙄 idk how you missed it.
The end of this interview with Clea being generous enough to share her parents tender last moment, it’s inspiring.
Paul and Joanne remind us of something that I have always intuited: the best relationships require a lot of work, but the work feels worthwhile. It isn’t a chore. It isn’t tedious. Rather, it is in service of a larger goal.
Beautifully said.
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽On both sides.
The best part of marriage is having a witness to your life, it's struggles. You are known. You are reflected in the eyes and companionship of your spouse.
There is something comforting in having that one human being to be there. One. Only one.
@@barbarabrennan1753 Yes, so true.
She was so right when she said that no one knows what really goes on between two people in a marriage, only the two people really know. Even when you are Paul & Joanne Newman...I always buy their Newman's Own products whenever I can. Because 100% of the profits go to the charity. They never took a dime of that money. Which tells me all I need to know about them. But they were human beings with faults and feelings just like all of us, their celebrity status was just what they did for a living...
I have some friends up in Connecticut who knew them from the town. The Newmans were very down to earth and part of their community. I think their charity work was their real love, especially their Hole in the Wall Gang Camp.
Yes, they lived by "To whom much is given, much will be required."
I live in Westport, Connecticut, where they lived for 50 years. He would pick my friends and I up hitchhiking; they did whatever they could for the town. Their children are down-to-earth people. Paul and Joanne modeled many great values, for all of us.
Well said my friend 👍
The hamburger statement by Paul was pure propaganda.
The last few sentences put tears in my eyes. Perfect marriage, perfect husband or not, he really seemed to love her above all others.
I love Ethan Hawke's comment about seeing the best in the older part life. He is showing that now, in his own choices.
This is why I love and look forward to CBS Sunday Morning show
I've been hearing the Sunday Morning Trumpet 🎺 since I was a Child with my Grandparents who have, all gone 2 glory 🕊 I'm still biggest fan at 58yo today
Thanks for the memories!
Yes.
I still miss Charles Kuralt
I always thought that he was so cool. Having a long relationship makes him even cooler.
I worked with an obnoxious, older lady at the MIA airport in the 1970s. She would run after celebrities to get their autographs. I once witnessed her jumping into Barbara Eden's limo to get hers. Thank god, Ms. Eden was gracious and laughed it off. When she ambushed Paul Newman for his autograph, he politely and kindly declined her request and walked away. I could tell that he wasn't thrilled about his celebrity, and was perhaps shy. I met many celebrities who were entitled jerks, he was not one of them. I can't wait to see this documentary!
Was just about to comment on Clea’s stunning eyes, love that she jokes about it but also that you can see his legendary baby blues weren’t exaggerated. She definitely lucked out getting her father’s eyes along with all the rest of her mother’s stunning facial features.
I love what Ethan said regarding needing heroes who show us that the best part of our lives can happen when we are older...its so so true, and we do need to see that particulary in this fast world we are living now
Their giving to charities was nothing short of amazing. Thus, for that I respect them dearly.
I buy the Newman products because they are good quality and actually less expensive than other products of the same quality. It's a wonder how they are able to give away a decent amount of profits to charity. I love their organic black and green teas. $4.39 for a box of 100 tea bags.
They were both extraordinary actors, and he was a very inspired director. I always knew that the “storybook” description of their marriage couldn’t be entirely true but, hey, they were human. Woodward’s performance in “Marigolds,” directed by Newman, was one of the fiercest poignant portrayals I’ve ever seen. After Streisand’s Oscar win, she admitted that she didn’t expect that she or Hepburn would win; she said, “I was sure that Joanne Woodward was gonna win!”
Use
So now I need to see “Marigolds”.
I feel that way about his direction of her in "Rachel, Rachel."
Dave Glo hey were true to themselves and one another
Always so humble Joanne 🧐
Such a great, glamorous couple. I think their charity work was their real pride and joy.
6:27 Man... this part is heartbreaking, Joanne struggled for real.
Also the part where Paul's first child talks about his divorce is just 💔
Poor ex wife.
Paul Newman Joanne Woodward they were definitely a power couple in the Golden age of Hollywood. The last of the great actors.
Joanne was saying that she was envious of Shirley MacLaine getting the great parts. Now Shirley and her daughter are estranged and Joanne is apparently being cared for very well by her own daughters. It’s funny how things turn out.
@User 15 but the children have fond memories, that’s what counts in my book
That was really good. I can't wait to see the documentary. Thank you for giving the world a 10 minute look into the Newman's world. I admired their talent and their charity work. Thank you to the family members for wanting this story to be told.
Looking forward to the documentary….This was a good story….love Ethan Hawke…
Can't wait to watch it
Too bad they’re using Clooney for the movie. They should have used another actor, ruined it for me. Can’t stand Clooney.
Clea, I'm so happy that you're sharing the true beautiful documentary of your Mom and Dad's lives, that tells the true reality of being famous doesn't mean you're not human including all the struggles
I'm sure it's been repeated many times over, but I love what Paul Newman was quoted as saying when asked if he was ever tempted by other younger, more glamorous actresses, he said "Why go out and get hamburger, when you've got steak at home?"
@User 15 I hope that's not true, if it is I unfortunately wouldn't be surprised, as Hollywood wasn't then & isn't now known as a bastion of (real) virtue.
"Paris Blues" (1961) for those who haven't seen it yet, is a great film. I highly recommend it. It even stars the late Sidney Poitier. Rest in peace sir.
Watched "the three faces of Eve" (1957) recently, and I loved it! it's RUclips for free currently, but you might have to dig for it.
I LOVED them all my life. That last story had me bawling my eyes out!
Same! 😭
for those of us that grew up with Joanne Woodward and (especially) Paul Newman as the example of "movie stars" this is so poignant on so many levels.... including the simple passing of an era, of our generation. As my life and others enter further into the 4th quarter... I still can't imagine what it would be like to be told within a week, one partner will disappearing into the sad darkness of dementia while the other is told he will be dying shortly from terminal cancer. The curtain was coming down on two extraordinary lives... and what a run it must have been.
Perfect name for the doc. Hollywood is not the same anymore & probably never will be
So excited to see this documentary. I have been a huge fan of both Paul and Joanne since I was about 12. But I was half afraid to see it for the same reason Ethan Hawke was afraid to make it - I couldn't bear to learn anything really horrible about them. Hawke promised in another interview that there was nothing horrible. He only came to admire them more. 💕
Well Paul was a terrible husband.... to both wives . And not a great dad either
@@jumpforjoy6 he was flawed as we all are, and carried a lot of regret and guilt over his choices. if there's anything to take away from the doc it's that this handsome, talented movie star was as human as any of us, vices and all.
It was Katherine Hepburn and Bette Davis referred to actresses having children as very hard- mostly for the children. Kate said it’s a very self-obsessed profession and she had seen too many kids deal with a mother for whom acting comes first. Her audio book went into detail, appreciated her honesty. I saw Newman in an airport once - was shocked how small he was! They can look so different onscreen!!
I really appreciate this comment. It humanized Paul. Thanks for this!
I can't express how excited I am for this!
I've had a crush on Ethan Hawke for 30+ years so having him tell the ultimate Hollywood love story is perfection!
Nicole: Great Expectations. 1998.
Alive 1993
How beautiful. The ending was heartfelt and profound.
Ethan, you have struck GOLD getting to do this what will be an amazing documentary, Congratulations
Ethan should be SO proud of this work. It was a whole lotta work, but when you love what you do it looks like this.
Glamour and great love story aside, extramarital affairs leave a lot of casualties. The daughter from the first marriage still seems crushed.
I'm sure she suffered greatly reduced attention from her father who had a 2nd wife and three daughters. I wasn't even aware he had three kids before Woodward. I've only heard about their daughters.
@@piustwelfth And one of those 3 children was a son who died of a drug overdose at age 28. Another casualty of that affair.
#LynnRozakis: If that Hollywood story really grabs you, try looking up the life and times of Patricia Neal when you have a chance. Has her film debut, THE FOUNTAINHEAD. become the beginning of her affair with then-married Gary Cooper. Goes through a second marriage with famed author Roald Dahl, whose granddaughter would become an actress herself, Sophie Dahl. Bookends the 1960's with TWO HEART ATTACKS! Relearning how to walk and talk essentially 3 times in her life. Knowing this, having her introduce the 1966 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film was a major triumph considering she was nearly dead 2 years earlier. RUclips has that Oscar footage, in case your curious. Her life even inspired a 1981 Made-for-TV movie about her film career and struggles!
@@JoseMorales-lw5nt It did seem like Gary Cooper was her true love and that romance started when he was married. Also she faced more adversity in her marriage to Dahl as he was having an affair with her best friend. Not an easy life but Patricia Neal was a fighter.
If you watch the docuseries, you’ll see Stephanie Newman, the daughter in the clip shown from the first marriage has only beautiful things to say about her stepmother,Joanne. However difficult it was, in the documentary it’s clear there is no bitterness about the divorce. They tried to make a wonderful blended family although things weren’t perfect. There was never an absence of love. That’s something worth mentioning. The series is entertaining, engrossing and revealing. Ethan Hawke deserves all the accolades he’s getting.
Mrs. Pauley, this is the best work I have seen so far. Very deep to the core...
I watched the entire six hours series. Ethan Hawke did an amazing job turning Newman’s transcripts into a coherent story, warts and all. And he gave equal focus to Woodward’s career as well, which was actually more interesting than Newman’s, IMO.
Wow! What a powerful story. Can’t wait to see the movie.
It's a shame that Newman and Redford didn't get to make a 3rd film together. Redford had the perfect project in mind, though, and he did end up getting it made. However, since Paul was too ill to co-star along side him, Nick Nolte ended up with the role. The film was A Walk in the Woods. And if you watch it, you can't help but see how great Paul would have been in the Nolte role!
that would have been great !! A good title would have been *_And One More for the Road_*
The did a play together that you can find on u tube.
I think Paul & Nick did justice to the writing together.
The most genuine you can get in my opinion. Good job Ethan Hawkes !
So beautiful. What a lovely tribute to two people who wanted and did build a full life together.
Well said!
It’s wonderful!! Had to spend two days with it!! Couldn’t stop!! Sensational
lucky people to have found someone to love for their entire life.
Love to see the documentary. Please place on more channels. They both so gorgeous. Hard to let go losing the one you love.
We have one part left to watch. It is just wonderful to see clips of their work. Great actors!!
Bravo! What an awesome power couple! Both actors are exceptionally talented and never disappoint the audience!
Those beautiful blue eyes 💙
I loved it. Thank you for sharing
I can't wait to watch their documentary. Thank you!
If the last minute of this piece doesn't have you in tears, seek help immediately.
Wow.....like a freight train.
This is heartbreaking. Such a lovely couple.
Well, if they ended up being absolutely in tune with each other, and the last part of their lives was the best part, then it was a perfect match! Growing and changing and working through the rough times is what a marriage is. There is no myth...they fought the battles and won the war! Even better than everything being easy!
THE NEWMANS WERE ABSOLUTELY PERFECT FOR EACH OTHER. ❣❣ BOTH WERE WONDFUL, TALENTED PEOPLE IN THEIR OWN WAY. THEY WERE JUST PEOPLE, A COUPLE, FAMILY WITH THE SAME PROBLEMS. NEITHER EVER PUT ON AIRS OR ACTED LIKE OTHER STARS DID, THATS WHY WE STILL LIKE AND RESPECT THEM.
🙄
WOW. Needed more but it was great The end was heartbreaking, hadn’t heard about the last moment. Very touching Looking forward to the documentary. The Newman’s are a lovely and real family. God Bless
I miss Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward May they rest in peace💗
I believe the video says she's still alive
She is still alive, although suffering from dementia.
Still living, sadly not
Much of her mind is
Left"
Joanna Woodward is still alive suffers from dementia
By far the best Hollywood couple. Looking forward to see the series.
Very sweet Hollywood couple!! ❤️🎉👍😎
Thank you for sharing this amazing documentary with all of us!!
That was a beautiful story. Thank you, Jane for putting these shows together. Very enjoyable.
Paul & Joanne. The world is a better place because of them. Maybe we can learn from the commitment they took on...and the difference they had made... to and for others.
Great video!
Just finished the series. Wonderful.
Always loved Paul Newman especially as an film actor with Robert Redford in ‘The Sting’ and ‘ Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid ‘ which came out and I saw in my first years at University. Never realised Paul had left his first wife and 3 kids to marry Joanne Woodward
but she was then in conflict as the mother herself of 3 children who despite being the better actor felt she had to stay at home to bring up children and certainly early on almost regretted having children for causing her to lose her career. Their marriage worked cos they worked together on their individual and joint egos and his excessive drinking. They gave vast amounts to charity but even in death ‘ the last person he wanted to connect with was her ‘ according to their daughter. And I ALWAYS found both Paul Newman and Robert Redford VERY sexy, not just for their looks, but for the rather ‘ off the wall ‘ characters they played and their ridiculous sense of humour !
I respect your opinion, but mine is that Joanne was definitely not a better actor than Paul. She was good, but way behind in convincing ability in her roles.
Oh it's was great, made me cry at the end
Wow, what a love story. “Even in death, the last person he wanted to connect with, was her.”
Tysm for this to know them and insight is a very beautiful way of knowing their art and being of their souls so beautiful💕💕💕💕
Oh wow! Excited to see this documentary!
An extraordinary story
Will watch it,absolutely!
Beautiful story of couple famous as they are going through their lives famous and in private together ❤️.
These two were great simply & absolutely GREAT!
💕 Awesome, I can't wait to see it!
I have been in love with Paul Newman since I was 13 and I am now 71. My husband, grandkids, family and friends know he is my ideal man. My first husband couldn't stand him because he knew how I felt about him, but my second husband who I have been married to for 43 years, was never jealous of him and even watches his movies with me ( love a man not threatened by anyone ). Even though I have loved him so deeply, I always appreciated his love for his wife, family and mankind ( his charity work ). Joanne Woodward is a great actress and always came off to me as a real grounded human being, but I do envy that she had all those years with my dream man, lol. God bless
She was great as the mother of John Malkovich and Karen Allen in The Glass Menagerie. Just phenom.
Absolutely amazing
Great story tellers in life and on screen
They were such amazing actors! Behind every marriage or situation is drama! I don't comment on anyone's marriage and I stay low key on drama! I still buy and love his delicious salad dressings!
R.I.P. Joanne & Paul ⭐️🙏 ⭐️
Cbs Sunday Morning Thank You for your fine fine stories.
These two were incredible actors and wonderful human beings.
Paul’s first family with his first wife would beg to differ …
I disagree. I found their acting quite believable much of the time.
As a kid growing up I always thought Newman was the coolest guy who walked the planet. Not that he was in control but that he didn't get flustered ever. Even in dire situations. It's interesting to see how he actually viewed himself as a " technical " actor as he stated acting didn't come naturally to him. As opposed to Woodward for who it was a more organic process. I think that's actually what made him good was that he knew he had to work at it and didn't take it for granted. As far as thier personal lives. Who knows and who cares a relationship between a man and a woman is endless and it's not for me or anyone else to understand or judge. As long as they see the light in each other. That's all that matters. ❤️
Thank you Ethan Hawke for doing this documentary.I grow up watching Paul Newman movies, my all time favorite was the Towering Inferno with Steve McQueen another great actor,RIP Mr.and Mrs. Newman.🙏🙏💙💖💞
0:40 "He's Paul Newman. With those fierce blue eyes and that flawless face." Yeah... you could say that again. He was one extraordinary specimen of a human being. With enough self-deprecation that he would laughed the loudest if he read this comment.
definitely will watch this !! 🔥❤️🔥🔥
Remarkable story and story and stories their daughter is beautiful
Used to be our Westport "neighbors", meaning they lived in our town. Cannot wait to see this !
The fact that he got what she always dreamed of: stardom and success. Must've created tension between the two, her words about motherhood are telling a lot. She was having a hard time & her ego was hurt. I think Paul had to work hard to keep her happy with everything, hope he never made her feel inferior to him. Poor Jo.
They still have it…the ability to make us care! Can’t wait to watch this.
THESE TWO WERE PERFECT TOGETHER !
I’m not one to power watch anything. I watched this series beginning to end over two nights. It is an exceptional story of two people who at certain points have every reason to call it quits and don’t. The best thing I’ve seen in a long time.
Such a gorgeous man and she was lovely and deep, talented
and kind.
Miss them young.
😞🙏💚
I came here as a TYT fan to see more Ben Mankiewicz, but I didn't expect to also get Ethan Hawke and to actually learn and care about Paul and Joanne.
They had such beautiful souls...
Wonderful they both worked at their marriage, there is a a lot to learn there.
It's amazing that Joanne Woodward is still living after 15 years of dementia. Every year or so, there are "news" stories that report she's near death. She must be a real fighter who has excellent care.
But it has been years since she has been able to remember Paul or anything else. That's a tragedy.
@@cathydrumobich9045 Sometimes...Karma has the "laugh laugh"...just sayin'...
@@birdsfan57 you remember that I never read she broke up his first marriage or anything badabout them and fr you to say that dementia is Karma makesyou sick and evil
@@cathydrumobich9045 how do you know who she remembers you never frget real love t here is a reason God has nott called her home yet though to be with Paul she must have more to do before she joins him
@@birdsfan57 Karma, seriously? You don’t know what he told her, whether he was married or not? Divorce is ugly, but it can’t be blamed on one person, its a joint effort by all parties involved, including his ex. It’s sick to say karma is the reason for her dementia, just sick
That last part ,,,,,, wow!!❤️
Good stuff!!!
Excellent! Love the Newman's Own brand as well.
Oh god did they know how lucky they were ? Even if it was difficult they had eachother and this made me cry ! I wish they had for ever on earth but know one does !
Said “good morning” to them early one morning at sunrise on Lanikai beach, windward Oahu. And since in about 7-8” taller than him I didn’t walk up and drool…..”lovely morning, isn’t it”, Mrs Newman said….
Great segment& Piece on Paul& Joanne ..anybody know the tune playing in the background@ the 7:17 mark.." I Loved You more than a...???" sounds like a Dusty Springfield song🤔???
This is going to be so good… they’re daughter is beautiful, she looks just like Joann!
Those were the real Hollywood Queen and King ,magnificent couple !
So jazzed that Ethan is/has helmed this legendary story and couple like none other as I know it’s truth 100
Can't wait!
