amigo mucho gusto acabo de ver tu video y me gusto mucho precisamente tengo una lenovo t520 que me recomiendas aparte de este core i7 2760 qm. espero tus valiosas respuestas. gracias
Gotta love the build quality of Thinkpads. You can repair that cracked bezel with simple acetone. It welds the plastic together good as new. I'm going to do this processor upgrade on my Toshiba R850. Thanks!
So I recently got my hands on a Dell E6520 with Win10 Pro... Battery almost dead, it was very dirty, both on the outside and inside, so I took it upon myself to give it some much needed love... So I cracked it open, take the heatsink off to replace the thermal paste, and I am greeted with the following: - A removable CPU (intel i5 2520m) - 500GB SSD - WLAN with 5 Ghz - 4G phone modem - An unused mSATA connector I already replaced the CPU with a i7 2670qm and am very pleased with how much cooler the laptop is/how quicker it is. The next things on my list are to upgrade the RAM to 16GB, get the HDD socket adapter for the second drive, get a USB 3.0 Express card expansion and get a mSATA mini SSD for a secondary system with scan software for my car. Not to mention how the build quality is top notch on these enterprise-level machines.
The build quality is much better than consumer grade systems. unfortunately, companies are going the route of cheapening their business systems to be more like consumer systems.
Thanks for this super helpful video. I'm going to try a CPU upgrade on my T520. I already added another 8g RAM which made a HUGE difference and I am hoping that this upgrade will let me do some simple graphics/cad work on the machine too. Is there somewhere you recommend to check on CPU compatibility? And where did you get the lit screwdriver!
This is the website I use for checking compatibility: www.cpu-upgrade.com/ The screw driver I got at a tradeshow, it shows VMware on the side, and I don't know how to buy one without buying like 50 of them: www.discountmugs.com/product/intk25-custom-promotional-screw-drivers/ I should get some done with my youtube channel's name and sell them.
I score 243 in R15 with the T520 and the 2520m. Not sure if I really want to even spend $25 on a 2820QM.. I'm using the machine to watch 8 cameras with an external monitor in my shop and it's hitting 100% usage/stuttering video.. Might just use another machine. Sad too because it's been awesome the last 10 years I've had it..
The nvidia graphics was an option on the t520 from factory. Only a handful of the systems are equipped, and it is soldered to the system board, so you cannot add it after the fact.

Maybe the Windows 10 Power profile needs to be set to "High Performance". Is yours on "Balanced", I wonder, cuz your CPU Mark score is pretty low.
What thermal compound did you use? Last time I messed around with CPUs you still wanted to use the full Arctic Silver V + cleaning compounds, had to scrape it over the full surface of the CPU with a razor blade, etc.
Thanks for the reply. Grabbed a new tube of Arctic Silver and used this video to replace my dead fan. Picked up the same chip to upgrade mine. Between that and swapping the HD with an SSD, what a difference! I should be able to get another 3-5 years out of this machine now.

I ended up upgrading to the i7-2860QM for my t520. Can sometimes run a little hot but not too bad, overall works great. Pretty sure the board would have supported the mobile "extreme edition," or whatever they're called, but they were quite a bit more expensive and draw like 10 or 20 more watts (can't recall for sure); probably would have run very hot. Since the 2860QM appears to be the fastest supported short of the minimally better spec-wise and probably much hotter extreme editions, I would definitely say anything 2860QM or below would be fine for the t520. I made the purchase and received the new CPU within a few days of my original post here and I've had no issues at all since then besides a tad more heat at times, but it was *definitely* worth it. The performance upgrade is quite significant. I also found a custom BIOS from a programmer in australia that provided me with new firmware for small donation that supports up to 16GB RAM (an upgrade I've already made) and removes all hardware whitelists so I was able to upgrade the wifi/bluetooth card to whatever kind I wanted as well. This t520 is still fantastic for how old it is with these upgrades, I use it a lot more than I use my several other, newer, laptops. Let me know if you want me to find the contact info for the guy that made my custom BIOS, he emailed me recently to let me know he's released a new version but I havent gotten around to trying it yet since the previous version has served me well.
@schwanzlutscher It's all about supply and demand. I was able to find somebody who was willing to take offers, and I offered a lower price, and he(she, ze, they) accepted it. Honestly I don't think the speed difference between the two will be very big, its only 200mhz. The jump in performance from 2 cores to 4 is the bigger game changer. So I would go with any 4 core processor you can afford that is on that compatibility list.
In case anyone doubts the validity of my t520 i7-2860QM upgrade, I just snapped this: imgur.com/a/2DutEf3 This laptop hasn't been turned off since I installed the new CPU like 2 months ago or something. Definitely works fine, definitely a *LOT* faster than the i5-2520M that I replaced.

I’m kinda confused, I’m planning to do the same upgrade on the same device for a friend, but I don’t understand what you mean when you say that there is a 50% chance of it upgrading successfully. Can you please explain?
www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Core_i5_Mobile/i5-2520M_(PGA).html "Upgrade Chance" is a probability of a successful processor upgrade/downgrade from the Core i5-2520M (PGA) (original CPU) to a specific model. This number is calculated as a percentage of all motherboards, compatible with both original and upgrade CPUs, compared to the number of motherboards, that support the original Intel i5-2520M (PGA). The number "100%" means that all motherboards, that work with the original model, also work with the upgrade CPU. The number "0%" means that none of the boards, that support the original CPU, will support the upgrade processor. The manufacturers do not always test or publish results for obscure and unreleased models, and in some cases for OEM only processors, as a result they tend to have much lower scores than more common desktop/mobile counterparts.
Your cinebench score for your i7 2760qm seems actually a little bit low, are you sure that you're running it on it's performance settings? I'm getting around 500 (520 max) on cinebench here using a Dell e6520 that also has an i7 2760qm
Its not a clean install of the OS, its my mom's computer, and i didn't do anything to make sure background apps were not running. I'm sure some OS optimization would make a big difference. I wish the recording of the before performance test would have not corrupted, the before/after is the impressive part.
@@RaineG579 it means the person you bought it from didn't pay for a license key for it. If the laptop has a window 7 COD under the battery, you can often use that to activate windows 10 since they offer a free upgrade from 7 to 10. if it does not, you can buy a genuine license, but that's like $100. as far as affecting anything, no. it does not. @AICvideo Thanks for your quick reply. This week I have planning to buy a new thermal paste then I will check it then I can share more information with you
@@AICvideo yes upgraded the cpu to the 2760qm. Reinstalled the heatsink and fan correctly with fresh thermal paste. Hello, my computer is a Lenovo Thinkpad T510 with an Intel Core i7 CPU M 620 @2.7Ghz. For some reason, it's slow as dog sh** :( I have a Lenovo V570 whose i5 2450 is much much faster at 2.50ghz? What processor should I get for my Lenovo Thinkpad, and how do I find one that is compatible?
This is what I use to check for compatibility: www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Core_i7_Mobile/i7-620M_(PGA988).html You have one of the fastest cpu's of that generation there is no point in going faster. there is a decent performance difference between first and 2nd gen core i processors, but their system boards are not compatible. but two other questions, How much ram are you running, and do you have a hard drive or an SSD installed? That makes a HUGE difference. if you have less than 8 gigs of ram, UPGRADE to at least 8 gigs preferably 16, and if you are running a hard drive, upgrade that as well.
AICvideo Wow that was fast! Well, I can only find one ram card slot, but I haven’t cracked it open yet. I’m assuming there’s another one somewhere, because that slot was empty when I bought it, I installed 1 4Gb ram card in that slot, but less than 8gb is actually available. I have a SSD Drive from seagate, with 250Gb.
One is under the keyboard IIRC. Yeah, you'll have less than 8 for shared video memory, and just how it calculate show much ram you have. so you do have 8 gigs installed? Have you just looked at your system performance to see what it is doing?
You have to flash the bios with coreboot, and there is a high chance of bricking your system. IMO, it is not worth it. There is not a huge performance increase between 2nd and 3rd gen processors. And going to a 45w chip from a 35w chip, unless you get the bigger cooler meant for a t420 with dedicated graphics, your going to struggle keeping the heat in check.
Maybe? www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Core_i5_Mobile/i5-2520M_(PGA).html That is going from a 35 to 55 watt cpu, I think, if it works, you will struggle to keep it cool.
I don't know where you're looking but its faster in single threaded applications, It has twice the core count so it crushes multithreaded applications, and it has faster integrated graphics. The only downside is it consumes more electricity, so shorter battery life when you're pushing it.
My t520 has a core i52520M in it, and it will get one hundred ninety something without speeding up the fan. That score of 343 is a huge upgrade in performance.
I thought I mentioned this in the video. this was my mom's computer I had given her. I upgraded the CPU without changing anything on the OS, I have no idea what was running in the background. It was more to see if I could upgrade to this specific CPU and what issues I would run into (which were none). I have an SSD to go into it and when I do that it will get a fresh copy of the OS.
www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Core_i5_Mobile/i5-2520M_(PGA).html I don't know for sure, because I haven't done it myself. A couple of things, the 2520m is a 35watt cpu, the 2860qm is a 45 watt. I had the dedicated graphics card which comes with a much beefier cooler, if you do not have that, i would look into upgrading the cooler to handle the additional heat. I personally would stick to a 35watt cpu.
that's the onboard graphics. If it was dedicated, it would be an nvidia or amd graphics chipset, and there would be two heat pipes going to two spots on the system board.
no, that cpu is soldered. You can see that if you google a picture of the motherboard, this is an E450 motherboard: ae01.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1uTvuXfLsK1Rjy0Fbq6xSEXXa8/For-Lenovo-ThinkPad-Edge-E450-laptop-AIVE1-NM-A211-00HT778-i3-5005U-HD550-DDR3L-UMA.jpg and this is a T520 mother board: img.auctiva.com/imgdata/1/4/5/0/0/2/9/webimg/805278434_o.jpg The t520 has a cpu slot that you can install the cpu into and the E450 has it soldered right on the board.
There is a very good chance. but there are two things going against you, Bios compatibility, and heat. Some systems simply cannot handle the extra heat, and some systems simply were never patched in a way to support the higher core chips. that being said, its a pretty high chance it would work, and if it doesn't, you can resell the chip and just be out a few bucks in ebay/paypal fees. but I have never owned, much less upgraded that specific laptop, so I cannot say for sure either way.

"Upgrade Chance" is a probability of a successful processor upgrade/downgrade from the Core i5-2520M (PGA) (original CPU) to a specific model.
@@AICvideo Thank you so much!!
@@AICvideo I'm having the same issue, I bought this PC and for some reason it says it's not "running genuine windows"? Will this affect my computer?
@@RaineG579 it means the person you bought it from didn't pay for a license key for it. If the laptop has a window 7 COD under the battery, you can often use that to activate windows 10 since they offer a free upgrade from 7 to 10. if it does not, you can buy a genuine license, but that's like $100. as far as affecting anything, no. it does not. It cuts you out of some personalization options, but that's about it.
AICvideo What about buying a genuine windows ten license key really cheap on eBay?
Most of those were bought either on bulk licenses, or with stolen credit card numbers. I cannot justify buying those.
Can i upgrade my Thinkpad w520, i7-2720QM cpu? Or how would I know which cpu to upgrade to, before purchasing it.

Hi, i have an X1 ( 12943DA ) which has a i5-2520M CPU too, can i upgrade to mine like your ?
I don’t know, I haven’t opened one up before.
bro my laptop is INTEL PENTIUM B940 G2 SOCKET HM65 CHIPSET wat i want to know is I can able to upgrade my processor to i7 2760qm processor this processor also G2 socket only
I honestly don't know. It may fit physically in the socket, but the bios not support it. you can always try, the worst that happens is you sell the processor for what you paid for it... But you're probably better off investing into a newer laptop.
How about premier pro? Good i5 or i7?
Hello Dear. Thanks for DIY video. I have a Lenovo X1 - The model code is 12933DG and It has a 2520m 2th i5 processor and I want to know this model CPU is upgradeable? If it is upgradeable, these laptop parts are compatible to upgrade this CPU with i7 3630qm? If you have some knowledge about this, I will wait for your reply. Thanks.
I have never opened one up, but my x220 with the same cpu is not, so I would guess the x1 would also not be.
@AICvideo Thanks for your quick reply. This week I have planning to buy a new thermal paste then I will check it then I can share more information with you
This only to change/upgrade CPU or can change/upgrade GPU?
GPU is part of the CPU (integrated) or soldered to the system board. it cannot be changed.
I did this and now my cpu idles at 51C at 0.7% Usage in arch with i3wm RIP
you did what? upgrade the CPU? which one did you upgrade to? did you install the cooler correctly?
@@AICvideo yes upgraded the cpu to the 2760qm. Reinstalled the heatsink and fan correctly with fresh thermal paste. It is not the nvidia motherboard version with the better cooling, just the integrated graphics version. I know the cooler from the nvidia version is better and fits and drops the Temps by about 10 degrees so I might try that. It also idles at 40 but gets to 50 if i have a browser with a couple tabs and a few terminals running, or 80-90 with a windows vm
I want to put Windows 11 on mine and just keep going.
I bought i7 2670qm for my t420 but it doesnt work I updated the bios but when I turn it on the only thing that happens is flashing light of the power button the cpu fan is not even spining. When I put the old i5 2410m everything is fine
Sounds like you have a bad CPU.
@@AICvideo I realy hope thats not the case.A few minutes ago I downgraded to bios version 1.46 and I will try again. I cant think of another valid reason.Do you have the 90w charger beacuse im with the 65w + charged battery I think its enough to at least power it on. I have 4gb of ram on the slot under the keyboard but it works perfectly with the i5 so I dont think ram is the problem.I will try and update my comment later.
It would boot off battery and yell at you for having the wrong charger if it is a charger issue
@@AICvideo oh thanks for the info. I will try changing the ram slot even if theres not much logic in this and as I said now im on 1.46 bios version and I will give it a try
This is what I use to check for compatibility:
www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Core_i7_Mobile/i7-620M_(PGA988).html
You have one of the fastest cpu's of that generation there is no point in going faster. there is a decent performance difference between first and 2nd gen core i processors, but their system boards are not compatible. but two other questions, How much ram are you running, and do you have a hard drive or an SSD installed? That makes a HUGE difference. if you have less than 8 gigs of ram, UPGRADE to at least 8 gigs preferably 16, and if you are running a hard drive, upgrade that as well.
AICvideo Wow that was fast! Well, I can only find one ram card slot, but I haven’t cracked it open yet. I’m assuming there’s another one somewhere, because that slot was empty when I bought it, I installed 1 4Gb ram card in that slot, but less than 8gb is actually available. I have a SSD Drive from seagate, with 250Gb.
AICvideo right now I’m looking at possibly downloading windows 10 on this computer.
One is under the keyboard IIRC.
Yeah, you'll have less than 8 for shared video memory, and just how it calculate show much ram you have. so you do have 8 gigs installed?
Have you just looked at your system performance to see what it is doing?
AICvideo Yep I went onto the PC benchmark website. It’s doing absolutely horrible.
Is there anywhere that I can get this done professionally
maybe? but it would be VERY expensive, and it's not hard to do yourself.
hi can put a graphic card more strong than dedicate because my vram is only 32 mb
No, you cannot upgrade the graphics.
Thinkpad t520i i3 2370m CPU can be upgraded to i7 2720qm plz reply
www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Core_i3_Mobile/i3-2370M_(PGA).html
ca i do this? i7-3630QM on mi lenovo t420?
You have to flash the bios with coreboot, and there is a high chance of bricking your system. IMO, it is not worth it. There is not a huge performance increase between 2nd and 3rd gen processors. And going to a 45w chip from a 35w chip, unless you get the bigger cooler meant for a t420 with dedicated graphics, your going to struggle keeping the heat in check.
@@AICvideo i7-2760QM is also a 45w chip.
Can this be done with a i7 2960xm?
Maybe?
www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Core_i5_Mobile/i5-2520M_(PGA).html
That is going from a 35 to 55 watt cpu, I think, if it works, you will struggle to keep it cool.
Can I do this to a Thinkpad E520 i3 2350M?
I don't know. I have never opened an E520. if you open it and the CPU is socketed, then probably?
Actually any real performance upgrade with this?
Huge performance increase in every aspect.
allright, but when i see cpu-benchmarks webpages . the graphs dont tell the difference
I don't know where you're looking but its faster in single threaded applications, It has twice the core count so it crushes multithreaded applications, and it has faster integrated graphics. The only downside is it consumes more electricity, so shorter battery life when you're pushing it.
thanks again
My t520 has a core i52520M in it, and it will get one hundred ninety something without speeding up the fan. That score of 343 is a huge upgrade in performance.
Can I use 120w adaptor post i7 upgrade
I would think so? I know that I couldn't use a 60w charger anymore and had to use the 90w charger to charge it.
Is it really necessary to play ear-splitting rock music during the video? It's really bad rock, by the way.
I put it in there just for you. I'm glad you appreciated it!
Can I put an AMD Ryzen CPU on this laptop?

all x series (220, 230, 240, etc) have their CPU soldered to the system board.
I only have an i7-2630QM in my T520 and it does ~440 points in CB15. Something isn't right here.
Just finished putting in an SSD and upgrading the ram to 16 gigs. Got 508.
Could i use i7 2860qm to upgrade?
www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Core_i5_Mobile/i5-2520M_(PGA).html
I don't know for sure, because I haven't done it myself.
@@AICvideo i also have only dedicated graphics card (intel HD grapics 3000)
that's the onboard graphics. If it was dedicated, it would be an nvidia or amd graphics chipset, and there would be two heat pipes going to two spots on the system board.
@@AICvideo oh sorry i only have Intel hd grapics
if you check the link i sent previously, you'll see there are some 35 watt 4 core 8 thread processors, that should be safe to upgrade to.

I have Dell Latitude e6420 with i5-2520M 2.5 ghz ,Do you think I can Upgrade it to i7 2720QM?
There is a very good chance. but there are two things going against you, Bios compatibility, and heat. Some systems simply cannot handle the extra heat, and some systems simply were never patched in a way to support the higher core chips.
that being said, its a pretty high chance it would work, and if it doesn't, you can resell the chip and just be out a few bucks in ebay/paypal fees.
but I have never owned, much less upgraded that specific laptop, so I cannot say for sure either way.
can it be upgrated to latest version of i7?
No
