And there are other ways to provide things on a tight budget.
I took brown paper packaging & twisted it up & made a “log” bc I just don’t have the $$ for driftwood, etc. I saw my hamster under it all happy.
I took an old plastic tub & that’s his sand bath. I made a multi chamber hide w cardboard.
Also, I found aquarium sand on Chewy for $5. It’s very soft & my hamsters love it.
For my Syrian, I used an older food dish for his water dish.

the first hamster i had (was actually my sisters) but she was bought for my sister as a birthday present. she lived in a cage from Pets at Home called 'Savic Spelos XL entry Mouse and Dwarf hamster cage' and we had a little russian dwarf hamster live in it for about 6 months. Then in 2015 we went to Florida on a family trip for 2 weeks, we gave the hamster lots of food (like we sprinkeld it everywhere and most of the cage floor was covered) and filled the bowl and bottle up with water so she didn't dehydrate, anyway we got back from the trip and surprise, surprise.... we came back to a dead hamster. obviously me and my sister were devastated so we wanted to throw her a funeral, we buried her in the garden. a few hours later we have a little jump on our trampoline to get our minds of things..... guess who we see digging out of the dirt😭😭

i adopted (bought for $20) a neglected robo boy. the owners didnt even know that there were different types of hamsters. i bought him sight unseen and was shocked at his condition when he arrived. he had a tiny wire cage with a 4" wire wheel. no bedding and a couple of seeds. he had no hides and no chews or toys. the water bottle didnt work. when he came out from behind the wheel i discovered he was bones and fur. his back legs barely worked and he kept falling over. that day he got a new zilla critter cage 40 gal breeder tank with an entire 50l bag of carefresh. its been two weeks and he has doubled in weight. he eats everything in sight. he loves all his toys and chews. i had lots of chews since my syrian refuses to chew them. i have to trim his bottom teeth weekly. so tutter the robo still has issues. even though he has deep bedding he will not dig or tunnel. he shreds the carefresh and makes a nice nest in his sand bath. also he never runs on the niteangel wheel. he chews the edges and stores his food on it. it also makes a great chair. would really like to have him run but its a big nope on his end. he also wont even try the water bottle but happily uses my former mouse water dish thats a mushroom that has 3 holes in the base and it autofills. he is an awesome boy and very friendly even though previous owner told me after i already had him that he bit. he has never tried to bite me. still needs more weight but he improves a little every day. IF YOU HAVE A HAMSTER MY BIGGEST ADVICE IS TO FEED IT!

It's really the same with almost any small animal - information and education is the way forwards and we can always learn more about how to care for them. I had guinea pigs as a kid and when I think of their cages today, I feel so bad for them, because they had tiny cages (smaller than our first hamster cage, which was above the bare minimum for dwarf hamsters), no enrichment and they lived alone. Today I'd do so many things different and better. But... our hamsters have had the best care we could give them since the start, thanks to you 🤩

This kind of video needs to be a trend!
If you got a unsuitable enclosures you could transform them into toys or hide outs for free roaming time. If you got unsafe toys you could transform them into something completly diffrent. e.g.
    Small plastic wheel?-Flower pot.
Small wire cage?- Add a cloth on top and it's a hide. The bottom could be a sand bath (or enriching substrate).

The minimum for a bin cage it’s a 106 qt bin that barely hits 450 sq inches (435 sq inches from inside bottom and 524 sq inches from the lid,4 inches of bedding and 453 sq inches),all people saying “bin cages are good” should say that, because some people obtain small bin cages

I did this with my guinea pigs. I got them a small 4x1 or 4x2 or something it was from petco so it was probably smaller. They had paper bedding and a few hides and i did give them the proper treats and food and hay and stuff that they needed but the cage was way to small. So i begged my parents for months to get me a bigger cage. Atleast a 5x2 and they said no since it was so expensive but then around Christmas this year they finally bought me one and ive given my 2 piggies the life they deserve and they now have a big fleece blanket as bedding, tons of hides, tons of treats and chews and everything they could want.
The cage i have is from KAYTEE but tbh i don’t recommend that cage. Their cage is bad quality. It falls over very easily so i had to use zipties to make sure everything stays held together. But the zipties cut me so easily and the bleeding is bad so idk how much i really recommend that cage. Other than that it works good. My 2 piggies names are Chili and Cj (for chili jr since chili is his son)
Heres a story of my guinea pigs if you want to hear it.
So around 2021 i got my first guinea pig named Peanut. He was mostly black and had some caramel spots and some white spots on him. But the next morning that i had him he passed away and it was most likely from a sickness. The same day Peanut passed i got a new guinea pig who was a few months older than Peanut and i named him Chili! He was mostly white and has some black spots and a few red spots. Then my brother wanted a guinea pig so we ended up getting a female guinea pig 1 week later and my brother named her Ginger. She was mostly red and had a few black and white spots on her. Chili and Ginger lived together and then we found out Ginger was pregnant. So we bought a new cage that would be her delivery cage. So a few weeks gos by and she gives birth to 4 piggies. One was sadly found dead. So the 3 babies were named Cj, Belle, and Rose. Rose and belle looked like chili except rose was a slick hair. Then later that night Ginger sadly passed away and we didn’t know the reason. So we were scared as we never raised piggies. So we got some evaporated milk that was in a can that could act as a substitute for a mother guinea pigs milk. We heated it up and we spoon fed it to them every 2 hours including nighttime. It was exhausting but at-least it was in the summer so we had no school. Eventually we weaned the piggies off milk and weaned them on water and normal pellets. Belle and Cj did have seizures along the way due to lack of vitamin C aka (Scurvy) but now the girls, Belle and Rose have their own cage in a 5x2 together and are healthy and Cj and Chili have their own 5x2 cage together an are all happy and healthy. They are all around 2 or 3 years and have happy years ahead of them!!

If RUclips is still a thing in a decade, I can't wait to see Victoria's version of this video then. Not that she's doing anything wrong now - it's just that there has been such an improvement in the "standards" in the last ten years or so as the community learns together, who knows what a "great" enclosure will look like then!

some advice for anyone wanting to get a lot of supplies for their hamsters but they dont have the money right now, slowly buying more supplies each paycheck will slowly build up over time until you're ready to bring home your hamster. trust me, i had only 1 wheel and a few hideouts and chews when i started out, but now i have 4 of them with 15 hides (including multi chamber hideouts), jars of sprays, 15 inches of bedding, 3 kinds of digging material, and a ton of toys and chews, all for 2 hamsters. I did most of the buying before getting them, and now they have an extremely enriching living environment.

with the hamster detoff, you could half it off with a wood wall with a hole for a burrow entrance and fill the other side full to the top with bedding for tunneling, you would lose a bit of floor space but would get way more burrow space for enrichment and hiding treats for foraging ect.

    Hiii Victoria Raechel 😁
You really inspire me! As a hamster owner I find watching your videos really helps me improve! I'm really grateful to have your channel there to help me with things that my hamster is doing like showing signs of boredom!
Because you have over a decade worth of experience I know I can really rely on you to have the best advice when it comes to hamsters.
This video was much needed not just for me but for first time hamster owners to realise that you can't just have perfect hamster *Click* like that its takes time and patience. (P.S. Sorry if that was cringe)
You care for Mabel, Dipper and Waddles is amazing, your so inspirational to everyone who watch your videos. Mabel is so cute and beautiful, I love her enclosure the way it's set out I find really nice! 😄
I know you got the names Dipper and Mabel from a cartoon (sOrRy FoRgOt ThE NaMe 😳) now I really want to watch that because it looks very goood! (tHaNkS fOr ThAt! )
Dipper is the cutest! 😀 In love the name! His enclosure again is amazing! I love the depth of bedding and his mushroom house! And finally Waddles although I don't normally see many Chinese hamsters (i aPoLgIzE iF i GoT ThAt WrOnG) he is spectacular he is so beautiful.
I love freerome time! 😁I think it's great idea, I will defienly start doing that.
Would you have any tips on when moving a hamster from one enclosure to another? Thanks that would really help because right now I am saving up to make my hamster Dito a new glass cage a bit like yours but a bit smaller! Also I know Dipper has a D.I.Y. cage but Mabel doesn't where did you get Mabel's cage ? 😁
Can I just say Cleo and Lola are the cutest rabbits I have ever seen! I have always wanted rabbits and seeing them makes me want to get them but we really don't have the time to care for rabbits properly right now 😄! I would love to see more videos showing them or maybe even a video dedicated just to them!
It would really mean the world for you to reply but I know that you have 594K subscribers and you can't reply to everyone!
I really love that you incorporated the book " WHO HAS A PET HAMSTER ?" I feel that the book will really inspire people to change how they treat there hamsters!
I really hope that the book is sent to primary schools to provide with the hamster education they need!
I think this video is just great, I love seeing the past hamsters. It just goes to show that not everyone is perfect and noone is going to get it right the first time !
If your still doing videos in a some years time it would be great to see another version of this video.
Btw I love the cage setups!
    Sadie and JJ!
How are they! I love them! They are adorable! I know you don't make many cats videos but I would just love to see them and possibly see them in a video!
I think it's amazing what you are doing! You are providing all of your animals with amazing care! And all by YOURSELF! You should be so proud! I just don't understand how you do it! Looking after 7 animals (i tHiNk) And run a RUclips channel.
    Your fantastic! ☺
    Hope you never change!
    Your an inspiration

Hi Victoria! I am sorry for asking you a lot of questions over the past few months; I was asking you so many questions because me and my family were going to get a hamster! It was going to be me and my brothers’ and my mom’s first hamster! My dad had a hamster when he was a kid, but he didn’t have the best hamster care. So we got the hamster a week ago and one of my brothers named the hamster Tater Tot! Tater Tot is a female hybrid dwarf hamster. She doesn’t burrow. We gave her 10 inches of bedding but she just doesn’t burrow. Her old owners only gave her an inch of bedding. Will she have instinct and burrow or will she just never burrow? Tater tot has an 8 inch wheel and she lives in a 40 gallon tank. I wanted a bigger cage but my parents bought this 40 gallon. Tater Tot’s old cage was a 20 gallon tank. We scatter feed her and we give her moss and hay. I want to give her sprays and herbs but we can’t afford that right now. I am adding toilet paper tubes and making diy for her. And we have a few hideouts in her cage and a sand bath. She isn’t chewing on the diy I made her. I made her a toilet paper tube ball and put food inside but she isn’t doing anything with it. Do you know why?

Thank you so much for this video! I've had a hamster for 1 year now, and I started out with a bin cage with ~700 sq in of floorspace and as much enrichment as I could fit (thanks to your videos), but Sal (my hamster) eventually got bored and stressed. I recently finished building the same type of enclosure you have for Mabel and Lenny, and after about a month in it, Sal started chewing on the contact paper on the sides of the enclosure. I just felt like no matter how much I tried, I couldn't keep Sal happy. It was hard not to feel like I was just a bad hamster owner. But i'm trying to remind myself that I'm doing the best I can, I've done so much research and done everything within my ability and budget to care for him. So, even though I'm still figuring out good cage setups and how to keep Sal from getting bored, that's ok; I can only continue to learn and grow in my hamster care journey

It's so interesting that you took years to figure out the proper care for hamsters... I understand money can be an issue, but honestly, I don't think you should have been buying them in the first place if you don't have the money to properly care for them. I don't own or plan to own hamsters, but like Emi I have mice. It took me 4 months for me to learn the proper care by joining forums and groups to learn from, much like you did. I don't have a lot of money either, but I still was able to meet their needs with a 32-gallon and bought many platforms, enrichments, and the right size wheel. In that time frame, they went from a critter trail to a 10-gallon, to an appropriate-sized cage. Wheels changed as well as enrichments. Everyone starts somewhere.
So I am honestly confused about why it took you so long or why you kept buying these animals (practically abusing them) if you didn't have the knowledge or money. Like I said everyone starts somewhere, but it really isn't an exuse for taking 12 years to learn what they need. I know most might say that if I don't have a hamster then I can't talk, but mice and hamsters are very alike. Their needs are almost identical. Look at Emi's mice enclosures compared to Victoria's hamster enclosures. The only difference is the climbing tools because mice love to climb. So I have every right to post my opinion on this and I just think it seems extremely weird that you took that long and I feel so bad for those poor hamsters you had in the past.
I am happy your current hamsters are living the life the others deserved now tho.

Little confused by this comment, the care that I provide now was not common or even talked about very much before 2017/2018. I had to literally go off and translate other websites to learn some of the common knowledge that is promoted now. The care I was providing in previous years was considered "proper care" at those times.

The improvement is amazing, and very much relatable! I started with a critertrail for my first hamster, Benjy, and when he passed I used that same stupid thing for my second hamster, Elfie. Several months into Elfie's life I moved him to a 450 sq inch bin cage and swore to my parents that that'd be the last time I would upgrade (they thought it was a bit outrageous at the time lol)! Hehe... wellllll after Elfie's passing I FINALLY, after what seemed like an eternity of fantasizing about making a DIY cage, started building one with my dad. After that 1150 sq inch cage was made I got my current hamster, Crookshanks!
My setups have also greatly improved over time but even now I'm still improving and learning!
It's a lengthy journey but it's been fun providing better and better care for these amazing creatures.

When I got my first hamster, we took the pet stores recommendation. Soon after, however, when we looked in the cage it just didn’t seem like enough. We ordered a cage about 500 square inches and set it up. It had a big ledge and was a nice sized cage, but I added no enrichment. I’m just happy that Coconut had enough bedding to make a den, and that the cage wasn’t so small. I feel like that was so long ago, but for my birthday last year we got an ikea detolf for the new hamster I was getting. My hamster now lives in the ikea detolf with a lot of enrichment.
