Honor To Us All- Mulan (lyrics)

- It's been a very long time since I have made a video and uploaded it. I am very sorry for that! I have been extremely busy! I finally got a little break today, so I decided to start back up. The movie this time is Mulan!
"Mulan is set in China during the Han Dynasty. The film's protagonist, Fa Mulan, is the only daughter of aged warrior Fa Zhou. She impersonates a man and takes her father's place during a general conscription to counter a fictitious Hun invasion led by Shan Yu. Along with her guardian dragon Mushu, her captain, Li Shang, a lucky cricket, "Cri-kee," and her companions, Yao, Ling, and Chien-Po, she battles the invading Hun army."
Facts about "Honor To Us All"
- Ming-Na does the voice for Mulan; Lea Salonga does the singing voice for Mulan.
- This song is sung when Mulan is getting all dressed up to meet the matchmaker.

i think the grandma was just like mulan when she was younger
I agree with that.
"Sign me up for the next war!"
- grandma
I think they are similar in spirit but I LOVE the grandma's quirky personality! XD
I wouldn't be surprised.
Sign me up for the next war
I could see mulan being her grandma when she gets old
All of the people crying sexism in the comments don't seem to realize that that's the whole point of the song- sexism was rampant back in the times that this story is set, and this song is meant to contrast what was expected of Mulan (sexist ideals that required her to marry off and live to have children and serve a husband) vs. who Mulan really was inside (habitual stereotype-breaker and actual badass). It's called juxtaposition and it's a storytelling device, so for those of you who are offended, you clearly don't know anything about history, setting, character development, or good storytelling in general, or you do know what those things are but would rather toss them aside so you can virtue signal how "woke" you are. Read a book
its called mysoginistic

"Scarier than the undertaker we are meeting our matchmaker!" That's my favorite line out of the whole movie.
werty448 That's interesting to know but really random.
werty448 Even by internet standards that was pretty random.
+101sakurakiss That was hardly random, as it directly related to the previous statement.
If it was random it would have accused Mulan of being heteronormative, or some other arbitrary thing.
I love that part because that’s when all the voices come together for the final chorus. Love it!
undertaker is probably either
1. the keeper of the dead
or
2. reference to the Chinese god of death
or
3. the matchmakers brother
Match Maker: "Fa Mulan."
Mulan: "Present!"
Match Maker: "Speaking without permission."
Mulan: "Opps."
Grandma: "Who spit in her bean curd?"

I love Grandma Fa, she’s so sassy!
How was Mulan supposed to respond?
@@EditorOfSL I thought she was funny, but yeah, I love her too.

When you think about it, the situation these girls were was really terryfying. Your appearance alone might determine how well your husband/lover treats you. If you didn't make the cut, you could have possibly ended up with an abusive husband.
i agree. the men had it pretty hard to, like mulan's father. he was forced to go to war because there weren't any other men in the household to take his place.
+Rachel Kim That is true.
Exactly. Even though the song has some outdated views to it that go along with the time, it also correctly emphasizes how men were the ones who went to war to fight for the women children and the elderly. So, the guys didn't have it that much better either.
+Danielle
Not to mention..how to keep a tiny waist if you keep on bearing sons.
@@daniellefregoe1467 And if a girl did end up with an abusive husband, she'd have no choice to grin and bear it since women could only be housewives and were expected (or practically required by society) to depend on men for everything.
“Scarier that the Undertaker, we are meeting our matchmaker”
-All characters in my fandoms when my shipping powers activate
This makes me cry bc at the beginning of the movie it's like "you'll bring honor to us by getting married and bearing a son" but at the end, she truly brought honor to them by saving China oh god here come the waterworks
+Spencer Wise I'm pretty sure that was the whole point of the movie.
Spencer Wise not trying to be, just pointing out the obvious
+Alhemičarka thank you for proving my point to me, as if I didn't already know what you were doing! goodnight
Spencer Wise you're very much welcome. Good morning
You mean.. the fireworks? Get it? Cause that's how Shan Yu died? ..I'll go now.
"With good breeding." Oh...I've never realized the lyrics until now.
at first I thought it was breathing
I don't get it, what does that mean?
@@sardonicsardonyx359 you'll learn one day
Oop
No 🤦🏾♀️ Good breeding, in this context, means well raised; that the individual has knowledge of and displays the particular behaviours of a person of middle to upper class status. Synonyms include: refined, cultured, polite, good etiquette.
Mulan was especially expected to have good breeding because she came from at least a middle class family.
When you think about the movie, Mulan DID kind of bring her family honor.
Just not in the way they all thought she would
Men did gladly go to war for her aswell
That's... kind of the point, don't you think?
I-
That was the whole point of the movie. To show a girl can bring honour the same as men lol.
when the ghost said to awake the dragon, you can see the image of the dragon when mulan steals the sword and armor from his father and cuts her hair.
That's the point of the movie my dude
Good-breeding and a tiny waist don't generally go well together.
The matchmaker even said she looked too skinny to have kids (granted they did put her in a corset)
mermaidwitch94
it wasn't a corset, those were not in China and they tightened the blue fabric.
Standards like this, were extremely common back then.
You gotta have them breeding hips
Dyam girl, those hips don't lie! xD
you can have a small waist & larger hips
"And a tiny waste."
I'm crying xD.
It's an expression. She's crying with laughter because of a spelling mistake.
Виктория Яблонскийa Nonons! Even if the person didn't have English as their native language I still think they should know the different between Waist and Waste

Mulan is honestly my favorite. She showed true strength and feminism in a society that stresses women to be perfect more than the society we live in now.
Ever since I was little I looked up to her. My all time favorite Disney movie
And people say Frozen does that... No, why???
Cindy white it does, but in a far different way than Mulan. Both are good movies with good messages.
People give Frozen too much credit for being a "feminism" movie when that's not the entire case.
The movie really highlighted the family factor more than feminism. I mean, it's there but not as much as Mulan.
It is kind of annoying that we have some women empowering Disney movies like Mulan but people only focus on Frozen
Isn’t it amazing that she isn’t one of those fiery main characters who just wants to defy tradition for the sake of defying tradition? At no point does she refuse to marry a man she doesn’t know, and never once does she say it’s bullshit that women can’t be soldiers. She’s never out to prove a point, she’s just driven by a need to help her family and save her country. That shows an insane amount of humility and love that is sorely lacking in other movies. Even after they leave her to freeze to death on the mountain, she never holds a grudge. It’s not about pride or who wronged who for her. It’s hard to imagine you would see that in a movie set in today’s time, or more specifically today in a developed country. These days it’s all about making a statement, changing the status quo. Not so much focus on just being a good person, live and let live and help live. She focuses on doing the right thing, not for fear of punishment if she doesn’t or hope of reward if she does, but just out of love.
There's not really anything wrong with defying tradition for the sake of it, though, it's part of progress. The idea of marrying someone I don't know leaves me cold with dread, to be frank, and I'm glad I don't live in a culture where that's expected of me. I'd rather die.
I agree with your other points though, Mulan is an amazing character with great strength.
i just realized how utterly ... traditional this all is haha
Did you mean sexist
no they meant traditional
a a no they meant traditional
traditional and sexist aren't mutually exclusive ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
thats the point for this movie. its to show how traditional it was and how "untraditional" mulan was :D
Movie really shows and empowers equality. At first we see Mulans feminine side, with Honor To Us All bringing women together, later we have Man Out Of You and Girl Worth Fighting For, which to the contrary empower men. However, at the very end, when Mulan dresses her friends in drag, we hear again Man Out Of You - which concludes and combines perfectly that all humans are neutral and individual, and that all of us have both fem & manly side - and everyone should be respected and treated equally in all aspects of life.
We are clearly not neutral.
Bruh that’s complete bs. Humans are clearly not neutral. If that where the case there would be no men and women.
Well said.
i like the part after when the grandma says " Who spit in her bean curd"
the the hell is a "bean curd"? Food? A....thing you cook beans in? .............actually, it sounds like bull s#!%...
Andie Leigh
A bean curd is a type of Chinese food, that's sort of like tofu.

2:12 (Mulan's part) to the end is my favorite part of the song 😁
I never realized how sad the song is especially if you're in the girls place in a time like that.
Time to ruin everyone's childhood!
In the movie, The Matchmaker addressed our heroine by "Fa Mulan". When Mulan "became a man", her named changed to Ping. So, if someone were to address his full name it would be "Fa Ping".
+Kayla Ching
XD omg it took me a sec then i laughed fa ping XD
The matchmaker recited her last name first. So she's really more of a Ping Fa.

I know. Later on in the movie, Mulan changes her first name to Ping and if she were to be addressed formally by anybody again, it would be Fa Ping.

Has anyone else ever noticed that everything in Eastern mythology or culture has to do with either luck or honor?
They have gods and goddesses for literally everything. But honour and luck is a big part of Eastern Culture, still is a big part of it.
Honor and family. Luck not so much
There's actually a lot more aspects, just not mentioned in this movie.
When you get older you understand how scary it was to be a woman back in those days

Imagine being a son being forced to go fight a war and die. There were plenty of stand up men that fought for their country and just wanted a nice wife.
@@MrWhite00001 Exactly, it was hard for both men and woman. I will use Japanese society as an example, as that is what I know best through study and interest. Both sons and daughters were property not humans to their father. Sons were raised to show honor and could never have their own opinions until they became the head of the family. Sons were always raised to be strong and honorable through actions that would never hurt the family in anyway, as well as how to defend their country. Woman were raised to become quiet obedient wives, who would bring honor through their feminine appearance, actions and offspring. Men were sent to war to die while woman were left to raise kids and would die in a loveless relationship built tradition. It's not fair to just say woman had it so much harder both sides had it very hard, just in different ways. Woman never had to kill, they never had to silence, they never had to cut their bellies when they showed a dishonorable display (Sepuku) unless if they were a handfull of woman sumurai. At the same time, men never had to be silent almost constantly around woman, they never had to raise their kids mostly and they never had to change their appearance exactly as their spouse asked them. I did not want to add Unconcental sex, as both had their fair share, I think there were many courtships where both the man and woman did not want to have sex with each other but needed to in order to build a trustworthy relationship between two countries.
It's also important to take into consideration exactly the time, the family, the lineage etc. Not all woman were silent sex objects, some were samurai too called "Onna musha" or were simple village girls that while yes, still had to adhere to Japanese female society, was much less strict unless in the presennce of someone of higher standing, and remember, this does not only include men. If you dishonored a queen, you would be killed easily, probably publicly to set an example. You also need to realize that back then, people did not know or understand what they were doing was inherently wrong, how could you? it was all you knew. You think men had time to think about morals in war when your entire country could be killed in a fortnight? you think woman considered that they might get a partner that would be their true love, when the entire purpose was to bind two nations only? no of course not. What is also important to know however, is that courtmanship and marriage did not always end badly. Usually, these arranged meetings were done through the fathers knowing each other a long time, and seeing how their sons and daughters grew up over years. Daughters could be promised at 6, but that was not as common as being married at 14 (Which today is the same as 18, remember, people did not live to grow old back then), and remember, both the son and daughter would be underaged. So the son might be 16 and the woman might be 14. Of course, there were instances where a girl was 6 and her spouse was 20, which...yeah, that's horrible, but this was rare, not as common as you would think.
If you really wanted to see a true horrible reflection of this time for woman, I would recommend watching "kaguya no hime no monogatari" to really see how horrible this could truly be. (Please do consider each period was different, the shogun era was different to others for example) If you want a mans perspective, I would recommend just putting yourself in the shoes of a boy who is raised to kill and never have their own opinion before being sent to war to die. But again, please realize, these are the extremes of that time in these systems. Sometimes, there was no war so sons were told to learn to defend their land but never actually killed and died in combat, and vice versa Woman might get a really respectable and loving husband leading to a wonderful life.
Media today has completely twisted things with woke culture saying things were just bad for woman all the time, woman had it worse all the time, but that's not true. It's what was better to you? killing people, torturing them and raping as a man when asked to? or being silent and being used as a sex object as a woman? not one of those two sounds good to me. It's better to look at the times as they were instead of like today, feminism is not that large of an issue to people when they see their daughters and mothers raped and their brothers and fathers killed. It's just not a realistic expectation of that time.
@1:28 GAG ME. It’s Soooooooo good. Their voices are SO pretty overlapping like that. I could go on and on about how that’s my favorite part and why omg THIS IS DISNEY not the remakes 😂😂😂

What’s really sexist is that people are exclusively shocked by the “women bearing sons” line, but they completely ignore “men bearing arms”, as if the fact that men were forced to participate in a war where they were very likely to perish was an appealing idea.
I second this.
Its literally what female bodies are designed to do. We just need to go near extinct so people can see the value in reproduction. Folks are to entitled with the modern world not even realizing how much sacrifice has been made for us to argue over thoughts and opinions in air conditioned rooms 😒
