Actually the line "boys will gladly go to war for you" has a better connection, because later on, when they are setting off into the mountains, the soldier are singing "A girl worth fighting for". It's a great call back, punctuated by them finding the doll, belonging to a girl that died in the hun raid. They found their girl worth fighting for.
That hit hard
Interestingly enough, that scene at the end of "a girl worth fighting for" where they find the doll also marks something of a genre change in the movie itself, as up until that point the main focus is on Mulan trying to hide her gender and fit in with the rest of the men, with the huns being a present, but background plot. After the Doll, how ever, defeating the huns takes the main focus, and now Mulan hiding her gender becomes a footnote.
That doesn't harken back to this song in the same way though
WAAAIT! So that's why there was that doll, I never understood the meaning of it! God dammit it took me 19 years to realise
Oh gosh…. You’re right.
"With a great hairdo, you'll bring honor to us all"

💀🎤
"Boys will gladly go to war for you"
Later convinces the group to follow her lead and ends up winning the war
That's not what that line says, and it's not what happens in the movie...
The line foreshadows the song, "girl worth fighting for," in which the entire song is about men wanting a woman to fight for, but ends on a somber image of a burned doll, showing that the REAL women men fight is for are the children...
Mulan wins the war not because she wins over the group and leads them to victory, but because she uses her individuality and intellect, defies orders, and causes an avalanche, wiping out the enemy. This is ALSO foreshadowed in this song, when Mulan moves a piece to the side on the old men's board game, changing the flow of the game.
@davidtucker9498 All of that is true, but the prev commenter was talking about after the avalanche and it is found that Mulan is a woman. In the end, her soldier buddies still come fight by her side when she was right about the Huns taking the Emperor hostage, showing that they will "go to war for" Mulan. It is their teamwork in the Palace that TRULY wins the war.

This song has many hidden meanings. “Striking a good match is one”, where “boys will gladly go to war for you” is another as later on a song plays out called “A girl worth fighting for”. There’s also the scene where Mulan places a checker piece down, and if you notice the two men are playing Chinese checkers, which is ultimately harder than regular checkers. The animated version shows Mulan’s struggles and hardship in a man’s world for war. It was tough, but her persistent and determination after not wanting to see her ill father join has her kept going.
She wasn’t all “I can do this” attitude. She knew her flaws and tries to work with what she can do.
Live version of Mulan gave her cheat codes and became powerful from the start.
Yeah. I only watched Xiran Jay Zhao's video about the live action and she went: "Saying your chi is special is like saying "Your blood is special." It makes no sense and you wouldn't say this." She has a lot of fantastic points about both movies and other Asian inspired media. Plus, she did a video about how MSG isn't all that bad. It's just salt. I highly recommend watching her videos if you like Mulan, Avatar the Last Airbender and I think she did one or two Kung Fu Panda movies.
The reason we connected with her in the animated film was because she was portrayed more realistically. Yes, she was definitely smart and capable in the beginning, but she had to go through a lot of growth to get where she ended up. It showed that their presumptions of women not being able to be soldiers wasn't because of some spiritual, inevitable factor, because with the same regimen and tasks, she ended up flourishing in her environment. This is what made the live action Mulan feel so wooden, souless, and even somewhat disrespectful to the original's message
they basically make her a Mary Sue, what takes all the realism the character had originally

Honestly, I think it's more interesting how "A Girl Worth Fighting For" is the last musical sing-along in the movie. The song ends when they find the remains of the village. This was done to highlight the importance of the scene, to draw out serious undertones for the rest of the movie.
I do too. Usually in musicals the music is played through out the whole movie, but in Mulan it stops half way. Its unique for a musical and it does highlight the action.
Also convenient the story takes place in a moment in time where a presumably unified China fought an outside 'evil' faction, most of their bloody history has been fighting among the various chinese factions for control and power of their particular lord rather than some noble ideal
"A Girl Worth Fighting For" ends when they finally reached the Burned Village,
The Doll that Mulan found was the Girl in village that died, they then goes on a Different Mission, to avenge the Girl,

@keyladiaz7280 there was alot of detail added to this movie. ❤ i loved it.
@@keyladiaz7280its not the same girl.
That girl lives in Mulan's village. It was a different village that was attacked.
A doll being shown early in the film was supposed to make sure that you associated the presence of a doll with the presence of a child(who it belongs to), they then hammer that point in when the bad guy(don't remember his name) says soemthing about a little girl missing her doll, and then Mulan finds the doll, which calls back to the idea of the little girl from her village.
They do that, so that Mulan can remember who she's fighting for. Which is her village, her family, and that little girl with a doll(in her village). Which thematically calls back to the line "a girl worth fighting for".
The whole sequence also gives us incredible insight on who Mulan is. She’s often late, she’s inventive, she’s very smart, she can make decisions on the fly, she doesn’t like unfairness and is protective of kids.
Her returning the doll to the little girl is a tragic foreshadow of when they find the doll in the destroyed village, and how Mulan leaves it behind, almost like spiritually returning it to its owner. This scene is full of details that lead back to the overarching story, and it’s quite brilliantly done.

After reading many of the comments it’s clear to see how clever the songwriters were. They did an amazing job of creating lyrics that were meaningful, weaving in elements of the story to come so that the same song would still be relevant at the end of the film, but with different meaning.
We ignoring the line "scarier than the undertaker we are meeting our matchmaker" suggesting that marriage is scarier than death
I mean for women? Yes, sure. Definitely scary especially if you don't know if he's a good guy or just a "good" guy. And especially at that time. So it is a nice detail.
Basically, yeah. In the start of the making of Mulan, they were going to have Mulan's family meet another to decide a 'Bride's Price' where in history, a girl HAS to make her family money by marrying a wealthy man, regardless if she likes the man or not. In the bonus features on my DVD, the familes do this weird trade off with their farm animals, which still makes no sense except for the fact that they're literally treating Mulan like a piece of livestock! The proposed son's mother literally pulled at Mulan's tongue and claimed she was 'too skinny', like the Matchmaker did in the final film because Mulan's only purpose was to breed and be a slave to her husband's family! Mulan wasn't even ALLOWED to see her future husband until their magical cricket 'said' it was okay and their ancestors won't be angry. Only then did Mulan realize what she was getting herself into when the guy FINALLY came out by landing on a runaway pig and said something REALLY stupid! 'You are worth FIVE pigs! And a cow!' Sure, he regretted it, but he already made the familie's point to Mulan, making it the reason she left to become a soldier.
Disney downplayed this because they wanted Mulan to be selfless and go for her father who was already wounded from another war. However, this movie always stuck with me, because I learned later in life about how much women were literally TORTURED back then because of the 'ideal female figure'! Mothers would bind their child's feet, crushing their bones to keep their feet impossibly small (in another movie). It makes me sympathetic to the earlier version of Mulan, because who in their right mind would want to marry into a family like THAT?! Makes me glad I can choose to be single with my own way of living!
@@kaytlinjustis5643 The last bit was more for rich women. Poor women couldn't bind their feet because they needed to work and help the family. It goes the same for most child marriages. It's usually the wealthier families who did it (alongside arranged marriages to keep the status).
Options are great but the industry did take advantage of it (women being able to work = more workers = higher prices). Although, also great for men. Equal rights, equal fights.
@Kaytlin Justis only royalty bounded feet, at first. In many cultures, women or girls are treated as property. As for Mulan, it is based on a poem. Disney as usual takes liberties.

I only just now noticed this more fully. In this song, she shows her gift for strategy by beating the old man at checkers. Then she shows her desire to protect others by getting the girl her doll back.
She also beats the guy in seconds. She probably does know the game very well, of course, but still. She’s able to look at what’s going on, compare it to what she knows and then quickly make a decision to win.
Or she’s just good at checkers and is a nice person. Not everything is foreshadowing
@@jaydonjohnson7507party pooper. Geez. Just let ppl enjoy analyzing a movie
Giving her her doll back. A doll just like the one we see at the end of "A girl worth fighting for".
They found their girl
Even better, that game isn't checkers. It's Chinese chess, and they play with pieces with characters signifying positions/weaponry that may be found in an army on a field of war.
Well, she did bring honor in both ways, not only as a warrior.
They wanted her to merry someone with at the very least a house and sir name.
Then she comes home landing a great general/lord.
The way she snatched the doll from the bully ❤
The other thing is that in the game of Chinese chess, she moves the cannon piece and lines up the red player to beat the black, just like when she 'lights the match' and fires the cannon both times.
This movie was so well thought out
Probably not... The red piece she moved is probably a rook, which checkmated the black general (king) together with the other red piece at the middle of the board, presumably also a rook. This is quite odd though, as moves involving the rook have always been quite obvious
We can also see that there's only one black piece on red's side, and that red is in a pinch but not in immediate check. I speculate that the black piece is a knight, which together with the chinese-exclusive gimmick that opposing kings can kill each other directly if positioned in the same column, proves to be quite a formidable combo
The fact that I can more or less make sense of this game shows how detailed this movie is. Though, I think they missed the placement of the pawns and the position of all other pieces doesn't make much sense. It would've been cooler if she actually win with a cannon though, since those pieces have always been good for laying traps. I checkmated my dad with a cannon once, at which time he still had both his rooks present and the cannon was the only offensive piece I had.
I always focused how she won what looked like an impossible match for the old man on the right. Also something she accomplished in actual battle with her strategy skills.

Mulan in the animated disney film is so awesome, she's relatable, happy go lucky, she's clumsy but also smart and resourceful, she wasn't physically that strong but she was able to work around that, like when she climbed that pole by tying those two cymbals together, I also loved that twist when she used her fan to snatch that sword from the enemy, and turned the battle in her favor, and I think that movie was a lot more empowering for women tbh, it's just the way they portrayed it, like they didn't need to shit on the feminine aspect of things, they actually incorporated that in the end, and it helped them win. The live action version is nothing like the animated one at all, I didn't even like mulan in that one, it's like they purposely ruined it for some reason.
And the line “and a great hairdo” has a good connection because of how Mulan does her hair to disguise herself in the army, and the emperor’s advisor exposes her by undoing her hairdo, and she shows the hun leader that she was the soldier by holdi by up her hair

Love this movie, there's a plethora of foreshadowing, subtle themes, bookending, and fulfilled archs for the genuinely developed characters. And it's got great music lol
"have U Seen Mulan?" Boy im living for that movie watch it over 50 times 😂
as an Arab woman, I relate to Mulan so much and that line hit close since I'm reminded of it since I was 14.
The matchmaker yelling at her at the end is exactly what happened to me at the age of 14. I'm hoping to bring honour to my family soon in my way.
IT should be honour to your Family in beeing yourself ...
That’s so sad. You shouldn’t be married off as a teenager. You should be loving your life. Enjoying your childhood. Not washing the feet of a middle-aged groomer and preparing his meals like a maidservant.
I hope things are better for you now.
Arabs culture is so misogynistic , sorry
@@newbabies923 So is every culture. 😔
@@jiminycricket5798 A 14-year-old should not be getting married, and especially not to an older man...don't you agree?
Uhh let's not forget Mulan's romance with Shang. Shang is also a "good match" in that he is handsome, kind, brave, open minded and in a position of power. The song was still referring to old tradition of a woman must have a husband (specifically one like Shang since that brings great honor) but also about Mulan's unique qualities.
I think I’m gonna go watch Mulan 58 more times. Honestly, Mulan is my favorite movie *ever*
She did found her perfect match *point at Shang*
I adore how the Emperor showcases "great wisdom" when he ignores EVERYTHING about their cultural history to tell Shang to go after her...
As a kid when I watched Fiddler on the Roof, the "Matchmaker matchmaker" I thought they were singing about a person that makes matches you light up... 😅
Also if i remember correctly in the real story of Mulan she did bring honor to her village but it took years for her to do so. In the end when she went back to her family her dad is no more thinking she died in battle. Her mom remarried and has another family, her siblings went to other towns etc. Mulan offed herself in grief after.
Sometimes it can seem like people really reach for a connection like this, but this one gave me chills!! So cool!! Whether they intended it or not, I love that it's there and that someone found it. ❤️ people are so cool sometimes
One problem though. A match failed, so she used Mushu to light the explosive. So she did not strike a good match.

Please read at least Genesis Mathew and one you chose yourself. It’s important to truly understanding what’s at stake. There’s a ton that never gets talked about in church. You really don’t know until you’ve looked into it personally. Think of those three books as the bare minimum reading requirement. Please at least get though that much. But don’t just stop there. The real power lies in the inner work Jesus Christ taught. Genuinely looking inside, and forgiving is the key. To be forgiven we must forgive. Start with your parents, they should be easiest, they’ve loved you. I know how that sounds coming from a stranger, but it is an extremely important spiritual milestone to get through as an adult. Faith isn’t some abstract concept you have, it’s something you show though your actions. Not belief, actions based on belief. Genuinely putting Jesus Christ’s lessons into action in your own life is how you show God that mustard seed of faith he requires. It’s not going to church. It’s how you treat others, children, animals, yourself, and the planet. It all starts in the heart. Love and forgiveness are tied together. If you love, you forgive. Not just those you love, but those who’ve hurt you, those that aren’t sorry, those that you truly don’t want to forgive. Overcoming that and genuinely forgiving from within the heart is key. God loves everyone, not just you and yours, but your enemies, and strangers on the street too. Shining the light of God though your actions allows others to see what’s so special about a relationship with Christ. It’s not about being a bigger or better person. It’s about showing everyone the beauty Jesus Christ showed us all we were capable of. It all starts in the heart. That’s where Love is. That’s what God wants you to know. God doesn’t just love, he is love. Please trust me. Breaking down before Jesus Christ and asking for forgiveness heals your soul. But it’s not just words. Mean them inside by doing the inner work Jesus Christ taught. That’s what truly makes everything come together. Jesus Christ is lord. Just think about his life to understand why that is. This is a man who lived without sin, for the sake of others he spent his whole life happily healing, teaching, healing others to know the true path. Yet he was betrayed by his friend, crucified by his own people, and yet the love he had for them was so great he begged for forgiveness for them. @@theoneeyedartist3253 That's the point. The way in which she ultimately brought honor to her family specifically involved FAILING to "strike a match" in multiple senses.
I tjink disney does try to make connections like this on purpose other movies it can just be a bit of a stretch
I love how subtle script and filmmaking choices can subconsciously prime audiences. Cinematography is good about that, too. Angles looking up or down at certain characters at key points in stories, for instance, can infer their positionality in the plot. Or how a scene is lit can evoke mood. Or, like here, lines of dialog can foreshadow later events.
Cinema is a hell of an art.
I would call that foreshadowing, the scene also shows that Mulan has a strategic mind recognizing a potential winning move when she sees it
This is why Disney movies will forever be core cinema. The amount of effort that was put into them thought wise through and through is so remarkable, there’s Easter eggs that don’t even become noticeably apparent until 30-40 years later.
not modern Disney.
And the scene with her returning a girl’s doll is important as that was what Shan Yu claims he is doing before invading the village.

she didnt light a match... she lit her mini dragon LOL

Except she doesnt light a "match" to get the explosive to work - she used Mushu - also im pretty sure it was a flint she was trying to use too
Exactly. This whole 'foreshadow/ connection is wrong. The flint and steel would not work in time, so she used Mushu as a living lighter.

That doll broke my heart, because it’s a doll they used at the end scene of “A Girl Worth Fighting For”, to remind the men that they were fighting for all women, even little girls.
What’s your favourite Disney movie? Let us know in the comments ❤
Mine is hunchback of notre dame
Its the emperors groove
My favorite movie is Encanto

Encanto
Here’s another fun fact about this movie:
In China the family name comes first rather than the individuals name. Mulan comes from the Fah family, her father is Fah Zu and the match maker calls in her as Fah Mulan, this means Mulans male persona is Fah Ping.
lol
It wasn't on that sense.
Fa Ping, or Hua Ping, literally translates to "flowerpot", a slang for "effeminate boy".
One detail I notice here, is that while everyone is singing about how she's gonna bring honor to her family by getting married and that's the only way she can do that, she flexes some strategic skills with the board game the old men were playing. Definitely a cute way to hint at her greater potential on the battlefield despite every else's more domestic expectations, since strategic board games are often compared to warfare.
That live action Mulan was a travesty. I did see a live action "remake" of sorts a few years before, made in China and played by these ADORABLE kids
Also, "boys will gladly go to war for you."
In the avalanch scene the screw up trio charge the huns after saying 'come on we gotta help' when they see their friend Ping in danger of being killed.
The little girl with the doll is the “girl worth fighting for” who dies in the Hun raid before they find her doll
Mulan is not a Disney Princess, she is a Disney General.
It’s very coincidental and satisfactory that “match” has these two meanings
This is my favorite scene!! And I've seen this a million times and love this song and artwork and I learned something new! Subbed
Hilariously this line reflects 3 different meanings just not in the way anyone could think or order.
She struck a match with the fireworks.
She struck another by exploding the hun leader.
And in the end she struck one with everyone's favorite bisexual icon of a general.
The Bible is truth.

It’s such a great foreshadowing!!!! Culturing the song meant a her purpose as a woman is to bring honor for finding a mate who’ll bring her family wealth and status as only a good wife. But she literally ran away, fought for her county in a time where she would have been executed if exposed for braking traditions (strange cause we are seeing woman in Iran showing the same braving today!) and saved China!
Mulan was one of my favorite childhood films and love that the message of brave women all over our world is being seeing today in different ways! #Mahsaamini
I never figured out what kind of move she does at this backgammon-ish game to score with the guy on the right
Mulan doesn't use a match, she uses Mushu.

"Striking a good match" gets lost often in translation, so many non English speaking people won't see this foreshadowing at all

She didn't strike a match though. She used flint and steel to light the fireworks.
She didn't strike a good match to light the rockets, she used squeezed fire out of Mushu to light the fuse
In the context of the song itself the line being sung is supposed to tell the audience that women are only expected to find a good husband and that women are not expected to do much but on screen we see Mulan show her brains by making an excellent valid move for one of the players. So while the sun is telling us one thing that we should take notice but we see on screen and mulan's actions shows and adds to Mulan's character. Heck when she was late for the Matchmaker she tie the bag of chicken feed to her dog so that when he would run around the chicken feed would spread and she can quickly get the chickens all fed before she would have to go into town
I always found this scene/song the most satisfying thing in the world 😭
People are to busy complaining about how there are no strong female leads to notice details like this in movies that have strong female leads.
Ironically, she failed to strike the match to fire the cannon, and had to use Mushu as an emergency lighter.
This made me want to watch it again-
