My favorite line is:
"You think the only people who are people are the people who look and think like you,but if you walk the footsteps of a stranger you'll learn things you never knew, you never knew."
Mine is "weather we are white or copper skinned we need to sing with all the voices of the wind and paint with all the colors of the wind"
Mine was "Come run the hidden pine trails of the forest
Come taste the sun-sweet berries of the earth
Come roll in all the riches all around you
And for once, never wonder what they're worth"
That last part hits like a ton if bricks man, worth is just slavery.
Mine was: "How high does the Sycamore grow? If you cut it down, then you'll never know"

It was sang by a US Senator from Massachusetts you should thank her.😂
As a Native American who was constantly being bullied, and the fact that I have several friends of all different races and ethnicities, makes this song our cope to block out all the racist kids in my school.
@@rhodophobia9572 I’m not Native American, I’m not even American, but I know just how cruel people can be, regardless of gender, race and ethnicity. I also know how kind, caring and loving people can be, regardless of gender, race and ethnicity. I have known and faced discrimination. The best way to fix discrimination tho, isn’t with weapons. It is with understanding, which is what makes this song so beautiful. She doesn’t berate him, insult him or attack him, she enlightens him. The only true cure for discrimination of any form is understanding, tolerance and patience anyone who suggests otherwise is misguided. That is one of the many amazing messages within this song.

I genuinely thought you were doing a morbin time meme until I finished reading the comment
For those who think Pocahontas basically 'putting the white man in his place', I can tell you that she's doing something greater than that.
She's (metaphorically) taking his hand and walking him through her world in order to show him a new perspective to the world without judgement.
I can't tell you how many people I've come across with their (metaphorical) fists up in order to protect their views. As an aspiring school teacher, I've been working hard to prove to others that the most durable philosophical ideas stand strong on their own, and that teaching an individual requires a willful listener. And a willful listener is one who has experienced a caring embrace, instead of antagonism. From there, the two can "paint with the colors of the wind".
This Song Has Many Different Paths, And That's Only One Of Them. She's Doing Both Of The Things You Have Mentioned, But The Song Is Meant To Make You Think. There Is Truly No Real, Solid Meaning. The Meaning Is What The Song Makes You Think It Is.

I understood it the first time I listened to it. I've always contended that nature can survive without us, but we can't survive without nature. Like it or not, we are a part of it and we need to take our stewardship of this planet seriously.

Hi it's 2020 and I think people should honestly listen to this song right now the date here is Monday June 1st, 2020. My sister thinks this song is not going to help anyone right now. I think otherwise. We are all the same. We are humans. In the end there is nothing different about us. Our color or race doesn't matter. We need to love each other an help each other. We need to be FRIENDS NOT ENEMIES. We are not better than one another we are the same. So why fight. We need answers.
alex I agree 100%
The white people dont see my people as humans. Nor do they see anyone who is black or brown. They never have. They probably never will. There are allies of course but many have always hated us, they stole the land almost wiped out a whole population of people. They kidnapped many children including Matoaka who is nicknamed Pocahontas who was a child bride. The natives are barley surviving. There offspring are called illegals. A border splits a family of people. Their is a war against them. Brown and black woman are going missing at an alarming rate and no cares. The song is beautiful but we can’t gaslight the truth like how they did with Matoaka’s story.
Fabi X I hate all this that is happening!! In the end we are all humans and we should love each other! Thank you for sharing this with me ❤️ remember you are always going to be loved no matter what ⭐️❤️
We, each and every one who MAKE UP the diversity of this world, are the "colors of the wind."

"How high does the sycamore grow? If you cut it down, then you'll never know."
Why did that resonate with me so much oh my god
How far can you push your goals? How good can you trully become at something? Are you going to give up on yourself, before you even realize your full potential? Its such a deep, but easy to understand lesson. I love it
Yeah like, kinda dark but. I've been really low and a bit suicidal right. But listening to this, "How high does the sycamore grow? If you cut it down you'll never know. And you'll never hear the wolf cry to the blue corn moon. (meaning to me, if I end it then I could lose all the good potential and good future moments that I could have) I mean there's times where I just lose hope and just want to straight up end it but, I guess this song just keeps me going.
@@austine1858 Hope you are doing well now friend!
@@austine1858 i felt that way too, it’s painful to think that way but it helps to clear your mind of the pain and think ahead. I was 12 or so, and my moment of clarity was when a friend asked me if I would be willing to miss out on the birthdays and celebrations of my family for eternal rest. I realized that once I give up and lose my life, I’ll never be with my family, never feel their happiness, I might even break their love. JaimePonsPK I was thinking of that 😂😂
I love how this song addresses so many problems. It’s not just about race and ethnicity but also how we interact with nature and how we affect climate change and how we abuse it. It talks about claiming something or someone as ur own, when that is now the case and how it’s more beautiful being set free. It talks about how we need more empathy for others and how we are selfish. It talks about how disconnected we are from animals and how we should learn to treat them like family instead of just destroying their homes and locking them in zoos. It’s got so much packed into such an underrated and amazing song
It also has an anti-capitalist message, saying to appreciate things they way they are instead of only valuing what profit they can bring. There's also a message about understanding, listening, and observing. That bear you wanted to shoot might have a family. This tree might grow infinitely tall if you let it. Ask the grinning bobcat, and he might have an amazing story to tell you. There are so many themes packed into this short song that can't possibly all be caught on just the first or second listen. Every song in this movie has a deep message, but Disney really went all out with this one in particular...
Yes I agree thank you! But for some reason only the racism is what speaks to most people and get them riled up, instead of the other messages of the song. And this beautiful song isn't about racism at all either.. it's more about empathy and putting yourself in someone else's shoes so you'd get a different perspective. It's not only empathy towards other humans from different culture either, also with animals and the Earth as well. 🌎
Pocahontas is showing John her world so he'd see it in her eyes and have a new perspective.
@@yelloe It isn't about racism at all? It's definitely not the only message but it is the 1st she refers to. "People that look and think like you," & "white or copper skinned," for example. It's negligent that people fail to hear the other problems addressed, but it's both negligent AND suspicious that you'd choose to negate that 1 specifically. 👀
@sophiefilo16 It has nothing to do with capitalism. Keep your socioeconomic garbage out of this. It's a beautiful song about unity and the beauty and wonder of nature. Leave economics and politics out of it, and just let it be a beautiful song that brings people together and gives them love for this incredible Earth we are so fortunate to live on.
@@tonygalati2672 It can also mean about capitalism. Profiting from the earth and owning it as if it were just an object. When the last tree is cut and the last drop of water is gone, what is good for the rich to own money? This song captures all the problems of our modern society : racism, individualism, greed, academy stripping the beauty of nature by comparing it to numbers and complex formulas (confusing the map with the forest).
Feels really appropriate for 2020.

"You think the only people who are people, are people who look and think like you." So sad and so true, this is exactly what first settlers thought of Native Americans. That we were less than human and even less than dogs. We were only considered "people" to them when we followed their ideaology and lifestyle.
A bit unrelated but I love your profile picture. They're my favorite band too
I often wonder sometimes, if this plane of reality I am in is just one of the possible reality's that exist, what other ones were born in that meeting. Perhaps there's a different universe, another reality, where nature and man are together and the Earth is as green as a block of jade so pure it shines, and the lushes grass cover every hill top, the air is as sweet as honey and as pure as water. I like to believe in that and hope they are well, maybe one day we to will gain that.
Makes me sad how colonised this world is. All that beautiful nature in humans and creatures and land lost.
@@aaphiiux How did the tables turn
That is something even primal humans did. Unfortunately it still exists in some forms. It's a shame, they're missing out on some great people and experiences based on prejudice.
This is the best Disney princess song hands down. She understands herself and how she’s perceived. Painting with all the colors of the wind, means trying to understand others, because you can learn something you never knew you never knew. You don’t have to travel to do this either. Talk to someone you work with, a classmate, a neighbor. You don’t have to agree with them on everything but there is something you can connect with everyone. This song is not saying do what I say, this song is asking to see where you come from.
It’s probably the best song I’ve ever heard about empathy.

I got a puppy the week Pocahontas made its premiere, which I attended. My puppy was bronze, feminine and beautiful--as was Pocahontas, so I named her Pocahontas--Pokey for short. Pokey crossed Rainbow Bridge 15 years later, but this song reminds me of her and hearing it makes me happy and sad at the same time. But it's likely only a dog lover or animal lover would understand that.

You got me in tears. I just brought my first puppy baby April 2019 and feel for you. Continue to love on.
I prefer this version over the French translation (I'm French).
This one is deeper, while the French one is more "poetic".
But the French one has one verse that I think is a bit better.
"You think people who are people, are the people who look and think like you, but if you walk in the footsteps of a stranger, you'll learn things you never knew you never knew."
turned into something roughly translated as:
"You think foreigners deserve the title of 'people' only if they look like and think like you. But when you walk in their footsteps, you're questioning yourself. Are you sure, deep inside, to be right?"
OH MY GOD!!!!!!
Woah- in my opinion though, they’re both versions of a beautiful song with so much meaning!
Not saying u don’t think that- I’m just saying what I think! :)
Hmmmm
Nah, i prefer the English more
Actually, the English one has more meaning. The french one applies to foreigners and that it. However, the English one applies to anything that doesn't fit your idea of what's acceptable. it could apply to someone of another race, an animal, or simply that annoying neighbor you don't like. It's not telling you that you are wrong, but simply that you're not seeing the big picture. keep an open mind and you might see that that neighbor is not what you thought he was. It asks you to treat your fellow inhabitant of society, foreign or not, with a bit of humanity.
The French version removes all subtext and subtlety from the passage.
"and we are all connected to eachother, in a circle in a hoop that never ends" this line stands out to me because it has true meaning.
Most powerful, meaningful disney song, second to circle of life.

These lyrics are even more relevant: "paint with ALL the colours of the wind", not just one. Maybe one day, people will realise that no one should be condemned because of their skin colour or ancestry, of which neither are a choice. Yet being born white instantly associates you with every atrocity that people have ever committed against another race. "You think I'm an ignorant savage? Still I cannot see that the savage one is ME"
@@elevenz367 No one seriously condemns white people for being born, and people certainly don't associate them with atrocities they've had no hand in.

I was 13? 14?
I had gotten into an argument with someone I was staying with and I didn't own shoes, so I bandaged my feet and hands (wrap bandages), grabbed my backpack and ran out of the apartment. I listened to this and ran for miles.
At the end of the day I managed to reach some hills. The moss on the pine forest floor, I looked out over the hill and watched the sunset. It was kinda windy, and I had goosebumps like none before.
Doubt it tbh
@@thatsonyou6093 you reuse toothpaste
So like where are you now?
That sounds very unbelievable, no offence. You ran for miles, in only bandaged feet (where do you live if you don't have shoes?), alone, going where? Why the hell would you do that? I get that arguing with someone can feel unbearable but how would you even get back? What about your hunger and thirst, needs? And why would you need to mention the "moss on the pine forest floor" and watching the sunset? Which can take an hour or so. Sounds a bit romantisized for a story about running away. Without proof it's easy to doubt it. If you get mad now, calm down, because I'm only speaking the truth. It sounds like something someone would make up to attract attention. So be careful about how you word things and what you say on the internet. Oh, and you listened to this song specifically for hours, too? How? Did you have a phone but no shoes? Sounds incredibly ridiculous. Buy shoes first, then a phone.

Icy Uranus whoever liked this comment is hella rude
\|▪_▪|/ True-
Hahhahhahhahhahhah... LOL😂😂😂😂😂
Imma like this comment now
I cannot put into words the impact this movie had on me as a child. For the first time ever, the princess and the “prince” did not end up together and I? It was not sad exactly, and it confused me to say the least (I was maybe 8) and I was just sat there astounded by everything the movie tried to convey. I think this was my first real “deep in thought” moment lol
we really are all connected to each other. every animal, plant, human, and every live being. we're all connected and I feel like people forget this or don't even know it. in this day and age, we have social media that was made to connect us but people feel more disconnected than ever
Like if you think the Pocahontas and Mulan soundtracks are the best! :)
Wowwwwwwwwww lets stop right there. Of course Mulan and Pocahontas are great but the obvious superior soundtrack is that of The Lion King.
Cody Newberry Lion King is the best movie with the second best score....next to the Hunchback of Notre Dame
Lydia Thornberry more like 8-12 year old girls lol
***** i am 12, i hate frozen's soundtrack. most likely because i was raised watching my moms huge collection of disney VHSs'
ya Frozen is annoying -_- I can't stand listening to it or watching it
I sometimes just watch Pocahontes to listen to this song lol, this is such a good song!
Or you could just listen to the song on RUclips
+Kennedy Whitaker I know😂
I misread your comment and I thought you said "I sometimes want Pocahontas to listen to this song" 😂😂😂
"You think the only people who are people; are people who look and think like you...." my favorite and most relatable line to the people who have had the unpleasurable honor of knowing someone like this. 💖💕
As much as Pocahauntus Disney is not historically accurate. It has some of the most beautiful and deepest meanings. The combination of this song, just around the river bend, and savages really are still so meaningful for just being from a childrens show
its crazy how accurate this can still be applied today in modern life.
Pocahontas used the word "savage" before this generation.. think about it..
+Dalton K that's not the point...
+Rebecca Gleason you don't understand, the word "savages" is an old word that the white people bright to America to describe the native Americans. It was used as a derogatory term for the native Americans as well as for many other people such as the slaves brought from Africa, so of course she was saying savages before this generation, her people were treated as sub-humans and as beasts and called savages so of course.
Because it was a word before this gener... YOU KNOW WHAT! I think your on to something....
XD tru tru
bro theres a song called savage in this song..
This song will always be relevant. Each phrase speaks volumes about us and our world. This will always be the most beautiful song for me.
I'm mexican and I love the latin version of this song, but the original meaning... makes me feel so excited, it's a beautiful song with an amazing message
Latin Spanish*
I sang this song in my history class in junior year with my friend and he gave us a dollar to stop
ALSO!
Since I was an agriculture major and had no desire to pay for expensive college tuition, I told my friend that I'd just live in the woods by Cobleskill dressed up as Pocahontas and sing "Colours of the Wind" every morning before class.
nice
Time for a Disney song marathon!
Right! I'm doing it now
Omg yes, so me!
You think I'm an ignorant savage
And you've been so many places
I guess it must be so
But still I cannot see
If the savage one is me
How can there be so much that you don't know
You don't know
You think you own whatever land you land on
The Earth is just a dead thing you can claim
But I know every rock and tree and creature
Has a life, has a spirit, has a name
You think the only people who are people
Are the people who look and think like you
But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger
You'll learn things you never knew, you never knew
Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon
Or asked the grinning bobcat why he grinned
Can you sing with all the voices of the mountains
Can you paint with all the colors of the wind
Can you paint with all the colors of the wind
Come run the hidden pine trails of the forest
Come taste the sun sweet berries of the Earth
Come roll in all the riches all around you
And for once, never wonder what they're worth
The rainstorm and the river are my brothers
The heron and the otter are my friends
And we are all connected to each other
In a circle, in a hoop that never ends
How high will the sycamore grow
If you cut it down, then you'll never know
And you'll never hear the wolf cry to the blue corn moon
For whether we are white or copper skinned
We need to sing with all the voices of the mountains
We need to paint with all the colors of the wind
You can own the Earth and still
All you'll own is Earth until
You can paint with all the colors of the wind
How many people actually stop to watch a flower grow? Or look at the sunset cast its beauty on the mountains? Sure, jobs are important. Life is important, but we often forget what is around us. Our focus is on people, not the world we live in. Trees, birds clouds mountains... they all fade away, and we forget to live.
Keep your candles on
Beautifully written! 🤍
this brings me to tears now that I'm older and can truly comprehend what she's saying. this song is so powerful!
im goosebumping soooo bad is it just me?
nope it is not just you. I feel all tingly and goosebumpy too.it's just the song
nope not just you
Venus. I am too
No
Bitch im in full tears because it was perfect
I have a friend who didn't respect the earth or nature and I listened to this song to help me inspire him. It's so amazing and sad people don't have the same respect for our home they did ten years ago. Thank you, Pocahontas.
This hits hard. As a child I never realized what this truly meant but now I do and I think we all need this. The sad thing is how accurate this is. No one these days ever appreciates the earth or what it gives us. It also talks about how people won’t listen to each other unless they look and act like each other. The only way we can truly be free is if we all take care of each other and the earth. “And we are all connected to each other, in a circle, in a hoop that never ends”
I've listened to this song all my life and i still get goose bumps every time i hear. My all time favorite Disney movie and Disney song! When i was little, and went to day care, my teachers would always put this movie on and everyone HATED it except me. All the kids were like, "UGH... I want another movie!!" and i just sat there, think, "how could this kid not like this?! This is genius." Gosh i love the movie. I think it's absolutely beautiful. I cry, and laugh. It's just wonderful. The music is beautiful, and even though it's a cartoon the scenes are beautiful. The waterfall, the nature in the forest, etc. I'm strongly agents discrimination and racism and things like that. I hate it when people make fun of other people based on who they love, their religion, their race, etc. This movie is not only beautiful by it's songs and scenes, it's also beautiful by it's meaning/lesson. :)
When I was a child, everyone that visited our house HAD TO watch Pocahontas with me -both children and adults..My uncle still hates Pocahontas because he used to babysit me sometimes hahahahahaha
That's why I like this movie, because of the messages it contains and all the lessons it taught me..It's one of my Disney favourites, especially this song!!!
I used to sing this song when I was young without knowing its meaning. Now twenty years later I'm crying because I now know how fucking deep it is.
I never liked the movie, they got a few things wrong, but this is probably one of the best Disney songs.
Gennie your so relatable!!
Morgan Freeman OMFG I LOVE HOW YOU WERE STALKING MY GOOGLE+. XD I LOVE YOU
"You can own the Earth and still, all you'll own is earth until." Seriously I wish sometimes that I wasn't born just so that I wouldn't have had to long for what was lost. As a British person I sometimes hate my country sometimes, because of what we did in the past and what we are not doing to change now. I hope by the time I have children that I can bring them into a world that I am proud to call my home, but I don't know if that will be possible. It's an awfully sobering thought.
William Trewartha-Jones don't blame yourself for what your ancestors did. We are a new generation(s). What we need is to do is have everyone make the difference.
I feel you.
Same for america
This song changed my life. I started truly appreciating everything and everyone on this Earth. I started truly appreciating nature and all the living things on this planet. I can't even step on an ant anymore. I appreciate all living things.
The comment section here is so amazing and interesting. It shows that we do as humans get her message. Everything is alive and vibration, everything. Everything is also connected through a collective consciousness. We all actually KNOW this deep down, that's why people find this song so beautiful and it resonates so deeply. Much love to all💓
This movie got me because i'm Native American

This song has such a deep and powerful meaning to it: We need to learn to be tolerant and respectful of those who are different from ourselves as well as to be considerate and caring about the natural environment around us.
The world needs to listen to this masterpiece
when Disney songs had meaning
ummmm it still does let it go brought me through a lot I'm just saying. This song is amazing too.
Go on somewhere with this mess
When Alan Menken scored all of Disney's movies.
Fuck let it go man it wasn't that good. It was a rip off version of hakuna matata
They thought it was such an insult to be called a savage back then but nowadays we'd be like "aw thanks man you're pretty savage too" 😂😂
Lol IKR I have a shirt that says SAVAGE
Oof. Savage man, savage.
Wow can't believe u would make fun of us Natives like that ever think that's offensive when I was in school I got expelled because a white boy called me a savage and I punched him in the nose. Do u even know what the true meaning of savage means? Since u clearly don't I'll tell u, it means unhuman like as if u were a wild animal. Well if only u knew the true history like how my ancestor Crazy Horse killed general Custer, the Ogalala Lakota Sioux. But the government sugar coated what actually happened because they were afraid of my tribe since we were the strongest tribe in the country and after the government found out the couldn't kill all of us they tried taking away our religion which they miserably failed at...so here's a lesson think before u go talking crap about people.
@@santeeroszell2256 She was talking about other people saying that, all ya'll want to start a fight in the comment section. She's talking about savage people call each other in school these days. Did she say she said it? Exactly.
ur an idiot if u didnt think savage was used as slang in the 90s as well? u know most of our slang from today was from back then ? thats how trends and fads work
Man i forget too often how AMAZING at singing Pocahantas' VA is.
Does anyone else listen to this when they feel out if place or lost? No just me ok. But seriously I do. It is one of my favorite songs
Am I the only one who replayed this like 10 million times?
I do every day
nope
Me- I will not replay this. It makes me cry.
The next second
Me- replay
there all just one and happy

Arguably the best Disney song ever created. This one always brings goosebumps.
„You can own the world and still
All you’ll own is earth until
You can paint with all the colors of the wind“
That line.. DAMN... my 34 years old ass loves Disney from the bottom of my heart!
