Shaking down a 1959 Cadillac Series 62 Coupe... Biggest fins ever?

- Driving a 1959 Cadillac Series 62 Coupe.
Cadillac dramatically reworked its model lineup for the 1959 model year. The Series 62s received a toothier grille, a dummy grille across the tail, bright window surrounds, and a trim spear along the side. Most famously, a gargantuan fin topped each rear fender, with taillights on each side. The 62s also had rear fender skirts. There were four body styles in the Series 62 - four- and six-window hardtop sedans, a two-door hardtop coupe, and a convertible.
The six-window sedans had a curved rear window, like the coupe, while the four-window sedans were known as “flattops” with a rear drip-rail and wraparound rear window. Series 62s were the most affordable Cadillac at $4,800 to $5,400, and the model was a sales leader for the division at nearly 71,000.
The Cadillac 390-cid V-8 developed 325 horsepower, Hydra-Matic transmission was standard, and most of the accessories now taken for granted on Cadillacs were offered by this time: power steering, windows, brakes, and seats, as well as air conditioning. Air suspension was optional.
Cadillac’s designers dialed back the 1960 Series 62 a bit. Gone were the twin rocket taillights, the fins were reduced in size, and taillights were placed in the rear fender caps. The same body designs were offered in both 6200 and 6300 series, with the same options and engine. Series 62 sales totaled just under 80,000, with the six-window hardtop sedan accounting for nearly a third of the units.
The extravagance of the 1959 Cadillacs has made it an icon of the era, and values reflect that status. Interest in the 1959 Cadillac Series 62 in particular has led to a lot of cars being restored. The 1960 models largely missed this boom, but as a result, there are better original examples to be found. Regardless, both years are quite sound mechanically and are a joy to own, provided you can live with 10 mpg and have a garage large enough to park the nearly-20-foot-long car.

That is one beautiful Cadillac.
It's sad how far Cadillac has fallen, Cadillac used to build the best luxury cars and now they don't even make a full size luxury car.
I don't like that Cadillac got in the SUV class game. To me, a Caddy is a sleek luxury sedan. I really lost it when Maserati even went that route.
They won’t invest in designing and producing vehicles consumers won’t buy. Times change. Tastes change. Get with it, you’re way out of step…

I hear you. The bottom line is the dollar. But with the proliferation of sports car brands going SUV size, because that's where the market is, consider a Corvette as an SUV. Mustang already went there with their EV.
Is a Corvette really supposed to be an SUV?
Back to Mustang as a crossover size, I'm all-in on EV. I would rather FORD made that same EV but gave it a completely different name. A Mustang is supposed to be a sporty car, not something you might see a soccer mom dropping the kids off out of.
@@Royale_with_Cheeze
They’re all playing with perceptions of what different models signify. Note how with EVs they’ve mostly dispersed with familiar model names and instead use arcane abbreviations and numbers that are hard to remember and basically don’t resonate with history.
@@FrankGutowski-ls8jt
Some may call this blasphemy, but if I had money to burn, I would like to have a pristine Caddy such as in this video and have it converted to an EV.
For that matter, the 1966 Batmobile. Consider this: On the show, when Batman and Robin jumped into the car and bucked up, Robin said, "Atomic batteries to power. Turbines to speed."
Well, those atomic batteries made that Batmobile an EV. Of course, not in reality, but in fantasy, that was an EV.
What an absolute honey of a car! Iconic then, potentially even more so now. A true symbol of the times. Thank you for sharing.
Best looking car ever built!!!!
Definitely is one of the slickest cars of that time.
Arguably the most beautiful exterior of any car in that era, absolutely stunning
arguably mercedes 300 sl? this is bad ass too though :)
@kirkh666joejoe I don't kno man those lines on the Caddy are gorgeous don't get me wrong the SL is a gorgeous car to but those lines frm the Caddy
@@kirkh666joejoe idk, it’s hard to compare cars from such totally different categories and sizes
I was five in 1959 and my folks had a friend who had one. I remember staring at those fins I was hypnotized.

1959, Best looking Cadillac ever made!!!!!! A car I can only wish for!!!!!!
I bought a 1959 Cadillac convertible in 1970. It had a bar in the back seat. It was a great chick magnet for the ones who did not pay attention to the year it was built. I sold it for much more than I paid for it. Bachelors days were fun.

These are the most beautiful American cars ever made - pre or post war - by any company. Absolutely the most stunning, timeless design.
When you turned the corner through the gates of your LMC property, it really felt like Elvis Presley was coming home to Graceland.
Love that car. Would love to own one.
Queen of chrome, my favorite color!😝👍🏻🇺🇸
This style needs to be brought back. I've always loved the astro tail lights & fins of these old machines
dude the soycialists want to ban cars and you want a style to be brought back? I don't think you understand in what "utopia" we are living in.
@@Adrian-mq5ld I was just voicing my opinion on a style of automobile.
Not everything needs to be a fight.
What a gorgeous time capsule!!! This 59 Cadillac is iconic, especially with those huge fins!!! Back in the seventies I knew someone that had a 59 Sedan de Ville & he cut off the fins & mounted 1 of them in the middle of the deck lid. Of course you couldn't open the trunk & it looked really wierd but it did get a lot of attention!!! Thanks for showcasing this beautiful gem!!! 👍👍
The guy who did that had some issues...🤪😜😵💫🤯😂
@@elaineewalt8137 he had lots of issues. 🙄
What a beautiful car! Too bad they don’t make them like that anymore! Most cars now ( not the ones you have) have no personality! Thanks for another terrific video! Stay safe and stay healthy!
Cars all looked pretty much the same then as they do now, in the late 50s, early 60s this was kind of the norm, nobody was standing around pointing at them saying wow.
The owners were looking to buy the latest model so they could lead the trend in having the newest looking car, the public demand change so the manufacturers oblige.
It looks great today because you hardly ever see them, it stands out.
That is some beautiful coachwork. The 1959 is my favourite.
Nice '59! As one who has owned a '61 Caddy and 2 1959 Chevys, I'll note that one thing about the big fins is that you always feel like someone is following you.
Beautiful
I can’t wait to build my caddy up like this… but red 😍
Simply Cadillicious!!!!
Nice to see. Would have loved to have seen some detail: engine, dash, underside, trunk....tnx for posting.
Those days are gone!🤠👍🏻🇺🇸
BEAUTIFUL OUTSTANDING CADILLAC ❤
When people say satisfying, this is exactly what they mean.
Amazing best classic
Man I love that car
That 59 Look like a Real Life Batmobile 👍🏾
This is a grail car. Unsurpassed beauty.
I love cadillac 😊
That thing is all attitude! And still beloved and relevant 64 years later.
ride and feel like royalty!
Shape of that A pillar is amazing :D
The convertible is so great but that inside chrome line following the a pillar back over the windows is too perfect
Man!!! Somebody babied that thing!! Got one myself I'm gonna restore!!👍
It’s not a car. It’s a work of art.
Only the Cadillac Fleetwood Sixty Special model had the chromed tail fin bullets. It looks awesome on the Coupe but that is not how the car originally came.
Right. We had this model.
Dad worked at Central Cadillac in Cleveland, Ohio at the time...
Customers could order anything they wanted and a lot of them paid the little bit extra for those chromed Fleetwood rocket pods on other models.
I'm pretty sure it was something like $45
@@slicksnewonenow Wow, that's great information! I wish the 1965 and 1966 Eldorado Convertible could have been special ordered with the DeVille beltline chrome molding!
My father had a 59' Caddy when it was new. The only issue he had with the car was that people would steal the back tail lights.
It's always the sons and daughters that benefit the most when their dads start a business from scratch.
Back in the day, I would play Mid Town Madness on the original XBOX and would always pick this car to drive😘
cool
I want one 👍
Simply DeLuxe 💋
My dream car
Living the dream! Recognize the Gran Turismo 4 music. Lol!
When I saw him turning the ignition key and heard the engine sound, I literally smelled the gasoline. What a wonderful car out of a wonderful time, when Eddy Cochran (at the age
of 21) sang: " I want my own Coup de Ville, make my dad pay the bill, yeah man, that's heaven to me..."
You made my heart beat faster.
We had this model. $4500. Did not come with chrome trim on outside of tail light housings. I passed my driving test in it.
The Standard Of The World.
Better have a full tank, you might not get back! These
12/18 mpg.
Like my daddy used to say, it would pass any thing but a gas station!!😊😊
Just curious. Anyone know what the MPG is on this car ?? 😁
Try reading the Description.
10mpg
We had one. 12/18 on bias ply tires.
They CAN get around 20 on the freeway.
I had one (a 1960 convertible) in High School in the Eighties.
Properly tuned, they get about 10 to 12 in town and exponentially better on the open road.
I'd get a good 350 miles out of a tankfull.
Only the 1961 Imperial had TALLER tailfins...
But the '59 Cadillac was unique!
I love those old full size cars. Driving them is more or less "piloting" them... Instead of steering, you just sort of give the car a suggestion and try to aim it in the right direction.
Of course, is Oldsters grew up driving things like that... Anything up into the early 90s would seem foreign to a younger person.
NOTHING rode like those old full size cars.
Even in the Nineties when GM was still selling their big Buicks, Oldsmobiles and Cadillacs, they tuned and retuned the suspension in them so much by then, they pretty much eliminated what we used to call "the boulevard ride".
She's a real beauty... Hopefully her owners appreciates her as they should.
I made my best pitch to my mother in '59 to buy one of these gorgeous Caddys, she listened intently but ultimately signed a contract for a '59 Chevy Impala! (sigh)
WOW! XOXO!!
This is Death's car on the show supernatural only in pale color.
The rear seems a bit high as if it was riding on air shocks.
That's my peeve with cars that are restored or at least have their suspension rebuilt...
The new springs are ALWAYS about three inches too tall... If they're coils, there's usually two too many winds in them, or if they're leaf springs, the arch is a bit too high.
The argument is that they'll eventually relax... But the owners never drive these cars enough, no less carrying two or three passengers in the back seat.
So they end up always looking like a High School kid's hotrod project with their a$$es up too high.
See?... It's a peeve of mine.😁
🛸😮💨🔥
The perfect car. 👍🇬🇧
Cant find meter parking
A series 62 with crank windows.
They were standard. 62 was the base model.
El Crankos were standard even on the Coupe DeVille and Sedan DeVille... But most cars were equipped with power windows.
Of course a lot of the Series 62 cars were ordered with electric windows, too...
I've only seen a couple examples of any Cadillac with manual crank windows... I wouldn't mind owning one because of the rarity!
the 1960 Plymouth Fury had the biggest fins ever, not kidding, go measure. Also, the1959 Oldsmobile, had the longest fins ever, and the 1959 Pontiac had four fins
clock's not working
We had one. Clock failed too.
It was right twice a day!!😊😊
59 Cadillac eldorado
Being a Baby Bòomer the '59 Caddy was not popular. In the 60's, they sold cheap. Cars in the èarly 60's looked slimmer and more squared.
wow . .
