I had one in high school...late seventies. Everyone laughed at it. Five years later when Springsteen's "Pink Cadillac" came out it was the coolest cart of the the time.
Mine was a yellow coupe with an eight track player and home speakers on the rear seats.

The 59 is one of my most favorite Cadillacs. I've never been intimidated by the size of the car or its fins. Maybe because I took the time to find out how this and the entire GM divisions came to be put into production in 1959. However at the end of the day I am just a Car Crazy Cadillac fan till the day I die. Glad I checked this 📹 out!

My parents had a '59 Cad. It was so big, they couldn't close the garage door; it had dimples on it from resting on the points of those fins. It was probably the gaudiest car GM ever made, but it was so comfortable. Our family of four could drive all the way from L.A. to Las Vegas on a summer day in comfort. And all our luggage fit in that huge trunk.

My Dad was a welder and my mom was a housewife. They paid $4500 cash for our base model two door coupe. They kept it until 1972, when they traded it with 52K mikes for a four door mid size Buick. The Buick was a nice driving car. The Cadillac was distinguished mostly for its size and design. The Cadillac was garaged and kept immaculate by me and my Dad.

Another long-time fave. I used to work in the GM building, where a 1959 Eldorado Biarritz convertible was on permanent display in the lobby (top down). I visited it every day on my lunch hour. One day I took a measuring tape with me and noted the fins were 13" tall. 1959 and 1960 Plymouth (full size) fins were 12" tall. 1960 Chrysler & DeSoto fins were 13" also, but slanted and much thicker, so you didn't realize how big they really were. All great cars.

I was 13 years old in 1959. Back then a lot of oider people drove cadillacs. A lot of them felt that the 59 cadillac was such an embaressment. Also people that had one were constantly having the taillights stolen. It was the epitomy of the 50s. Note the 60 and 61 were more subdued. I love it thanks for the presentation

I remember my mother had a 59 red convertible like this but with solid red interior in 1965 and only paid 250.00 for it. Back then it was just a 6 year old used car and not the holy grail it is today. I also remember it was side swiped on 15th Street in Washington, DC and she never retrieved it from the towing yard. Even as a 10 year old I loved that car. To this day the 59 is still my dream car. What I wouldn't give to have one now.

GM's '59's were a knee jerk reaction to Chrysler Corp's 1957's. This is why GM's '58's were a one year only redesign. The story goes the head of GM got a hold of Chrysler's new car brochure, threw it on the desk of his head designer and said, "Why don't you quit?"

I transferred to a new school in my senior year in 1967. In study hall a girl passed me a note asking if I knew how to drive. Yes. Would I teach her? What kind of car do you have? Her mother's '59 Coupe deVille. Oh, absolutely! :) Her mother was short and could barely see over the dash. Actually I was more of a driver for the girl who was really, shall we say, popular with the boys who spent my driving time through SE CO and NE NM with her BF du jour in the back seat. Loved driving that car.

The late 40s and 50's Cadillacs were iconic, I would own one or more but as much as I love them, I don't wish to be a caretaker for old cars. That said I'm glad people like Jay Leno do what they do and I get to admire those iconic works of art for free. TheReaper!

I had the honour to restore a 59 4 door -the owner bought it in Montana trailered to Ontario Canada and I worked on it for over a year . I passed my driving test in one. Fins helped to locate the end of the car and the wheels. Learned to drive sighting along the fins to stay on track while backing out of a long, two-track gravel driveway. Passed driving test on the first try, including parallel parking!

Beautiful automobile! However, at 4:00, you say that the car had been sitting outside for 26 years when you found it in 1982. Unless my math is faulty, that can't be right. In 1982, a 1959 car would have been 23 years old. Am I missing something here? 1956 was 26 years prior to 1982.

I'm 20 years old and I remember the day my mother and I went to the vehicle toy section of Müller to buy my favourite American 1950s car: A pink 1959 Cadillac which I still have, though it's partially fallen apart from me playing with it a lot in my younger years (missing bullet shape tail lights, wipers and chrome part next to the boot broke off and loose sun visors and windscreen)
Then came the 2017 Piston Riot meeting in the capital city where I and my parents encountered a *real* 1959 Cadillac, registered in the capital city despite the fact 1950s American cars are very rare in Europe.

@@loucostabile : LOL. We were having that debate over on my car club's website and it's kind of a subjective thing. If you grade by length, the '57-'58 Desoto has them all beat. That fin ran from the rear tip all the way down to the top of the front door! For height, yes, the '59 Caddy. For width, the '61 Imperial. Totally a subjective thing. One thing, though --- fins were COOL!
