So turns out one of the reasons why KFP4 was so mid is because Dreamworks hired a yes man director (Mike Mitchell) and told him what THEY wanted in a KFP4, even if it had the same writers. It seems like they were told to make it very "jokey", so they wanted a full on comedy. It also seems the co-director (Stephanie Ma Stine) really wanted to put as much heart and emotion into the film as the first two movies, but her ideas were ditched. Instead she was mistreated and called a "nobody" by the crew.
Lethal Weapon 2, did the same thing with their script, Joel Silver hated Shane Black's script, because it was too violent, and, Martin Riggs died at the, end, as a result, we got that obscenely overrated mess, and, pathetic, third, and, fourth, films, he's just a hack producer that lucked into, Lethal Weapon, and, Die Hard, really disastrously nasty, period.

That explains why the fourth Kung fu panda is so mid I liked it but compared to the rest of the series it's okay and repeats lots of things we've done before without much new stuff. Stephanie being disrespected like that is wrong and off such it because of her that we got the best out of this series now they're just playing the greatest hits list not trying any thing new for now.

Since she’s a chameleon with shapeshifting powers they could’ve made her someone suffering an identity crisis who copes by impersonating as the furious 5 to feel secure with herself but takes it way too far to the point of getting away with stalking the furious 5 with her shapeshifting, breaking their trust with each other.
Or you could have had Zhen and Chameleon be one and the same character (with some tweaks) who was personally trying to fool Po.
Like, aren't foxes known shapeshifters in Asian mythology?
Would make a twist much stronger, we would get to know her better as a character throughout the movie, and their fight would feel more personal.
Maybe you could have Po acting as "spiritual leader" and for the first time in his life, helping villain see error of their ways, and try to help them with redemption, instead of just killing them.
"Villain redemption arc" might be too overused, but it would totally work here.
That would have been a Nice call back to Po and his Fanboy of the Furious 5 but a more extreme version

The interesting thing is that the dragon warrior was suppose to be a person who appears every 1000 years, and master oogway did sense the dragon warrior presence, hence why he wanted to have this dragon warrior ceremony.
This dragon warrior was destined to bring big change for the kung fu world, but also defeat a future threat Kai( hence oogway was ok with losing to Kai)
In kung fu panda 4, Po has to choose a dragon warrior, just because master Shifu wants it.

I mean, to be fair it’s not really Shrek 3 levels of bad so I don’t think retconning it fully is warranted. In my opinion it’s a good movie but it’s not a great one, not nearly as good as the original trilogy but still a fun watch but that’s just my opinion maybe I’m missing something. Shrek 3 was a dumpster fire from beginning to end
I'm so glad im not the only one who thinks this movie was terrible. Literally got everyone hyped up with Tai Lung just to ruin it with no furious 5, no VAs for kai or shen. And we get that stupid fox. And barely and redemption for Tai lung, plus he got beat WAY too easily. Chameleon is also a very plain and boring villain. Same with the fox, being the typical selfish thief that turns good and has 0 character whatsoever

literally Awkwafina has gotten kind of annoying in animated movies at this point. From Raya, the Bad Guys, Migration, and Scuttle in the Little Mermaid remake and now this. talking in that rapid fire jokes that just get very exhausting very quickly

Dreamworks is the hit or miss studio, they can make Puss In Boots 2 on Monday then make Megamind 2 on Tuesday...

Megamind 2 wasn’t even made by the movie division, it was made by the show division. So instead of a theatrical release (which is also a total gamble on the quality), they decided to a make it a streaming exclusive with a show to boot (which to be fair, would’ve also been a gamble on it coming out decent). They truly are the most wild-card studio out there.
No bc the part where she starts talking about her motivations, I was so confused. As if mantis isn’t small and viper is about the same damn size as her.

I wonder if Pixar considered Awkwafina to play Ember in "Elemental", but couldn't get to her because she was busy playing Miss Spider in "Bad Guys", Scuttle in The Little Mermaid" remake, the pigeon in "Migration", and Zhen in this movie, as well as the narrator in Disney Plus' "A Real Bug's Life".
Elemental, was not only the worst film nominated, there were better films that weren't nominated, luckily, TBATH, won, as for Awkwafina, Hollywood, so, needs to put her out of our misery, yesterday.

Tai Lung was wasted. He could’ve teamed up with Po or said goodbye and make amends with Shifu (the latter which actually was supposed to happen but they cut the scene from the final film.)

The best thing to come from this movie is that it gave everyone a newfound appreciation for the third one.
It’s funny how 2 years ago when The Bad Guys and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish came out, many people on the internet were saying DreamWorks was making a comeback after having a string of average animated films like the Trolls films, The Boss Baby films and Spirit: Untamed and using it as an excuse to hate on Disney.
Oh - what's that? NOW look - there’s are video released in hindsight of Kung Fu Panda 4’s release, discussing how DreamWorks is now “going downhill”. It really sure shows how many narrow-minded people on the internet will just automatically jump to the conclusion that a studio is returning back to its successful heights as in the old years, from just 2 frigging films, without considering the overall possible critical and financial outcome of the films following.
Hilarious.
I hope it's not a forever trend that movies look good but turn out to be bad to awful.
About the Chameleon...
I like her design
The voice actress did a decend job
Her powers are a legit good concept
But they made her so lame... the director gave the writers NOTHING to work with
It genuinely felt scenes were missing from her character.
How to make sure Kung Fu Panda 5 good:
-Introduce Japan into the world
-Create a new villain that actually serves as a dark reflection of Po (maybe base him off a Japanese mythological creature)
-Develop Zhen more (and try to find a new voice actress)
-Bring back Tai Lung
-End the film with the villain winning
Awkwafina is going to become like, ADB, getting great roles because she, "deserves," them, as for letting the villain win, unless you're making two films simultaneously, it's far too risky, because, whenever, a terrible franchise continues solely off of popularity, eventually, people voluntarily skip it, period.

Also for Zhen, I agree that they need to develop her character more in the 5th one and also I don’t think they are going to recast her, they would just see that as unnecessary. I don’t think Tai Lung shouldn’t be in the other films as he already got a solid or Ok conclusion in this film (at least for me). I like the Idea of Japanese martial arts being a part of the next one, it gives them an opportunity to expand the world. I wasn’t thinking if it before but if you mean the villain winning as in a 2 parter like Infinity War and Endgame, then I’m all down for that.
@ZG2008 Thank You, they won't recast her because it's like a very popular tv series that's, so, good, it succeeds, despite, having one demonstrably incorrigible character, apparently, Addition By Subtraction's, a lost art, The, More Things Change.

Not even gonna lie, with how little evil the Chameleon did in the movie, I thought they were gonna have her go through a redemption arc because the whole movie's message is change, so what would make more sense than having the villain change from bad to good (and they needed her to be redeemable so they couldn't have her do too much bad shit)?

Personally, I felt like you could easily fuse Chameleon and Aquafina Fox into one character, a co-protagonist who is simultaneously a villain, who might get redeemed at the end.

Chameleon's motivations are so nonsensical because, as everyone pointed out, Mantis exists. And Shifu who is small. Master Chicken is a character in the third film. And if she wanted to know Kung Fu so bad and if her town knows about Shifu...wouldn't she go where he is? A red panda master! Even if she found Shifu in his worst post-Tai Lung depression, Oogway would've taken her on!

Kung Fu Panda 5: Rock Bottom
Even the lowest moment of Kung Fu Panda is higher than the best moments of the Boss Baby franchise.
Yeah, well, don't worry, I'm fairly certain that the, Boss Baby, franchise is clearly, already, on borrowed time, and, it will, likely, end, very soon, because of, well, you know.
I think Dreamworks did with "Megamind 2" the same as what DIsney did in their sequal era. I wouldn't be surprised if "Megamind 2" was originally gonna be a TV show with episodes fighting different villains in various episodes, alongside a "cool qwuirky kid sidekick", i.e. the Bridge to Terabithia Lesley knockoff that we see team up with Megamind. Only for the execs to decide "Nah! Let's just smash the episodes together and pretend it's a deliberate movie sequal!"

Kung Fu Panda for Dreamworks is the don't judge a book based on it's cover because it's truly does so much more than what you expected from a title like Kung Fu panda. I watched all of the films piror and even the Nicktoon spin off series and the films showcase Dreamworks best aspects in filmmaking and storytelling & the 4th film in comparsion is just fine good enough but for this series it's a bit disappointing to see the series go on autoplay playing the greatest hits including having the past villains be back but is a safe and fine film in a series that's done so much better hope 5 picks up things after this.

This has been stated somewhere else, but why does Po even need to retire from being the Dragon Warrior in this movie? It's only been a few years and Oogway named Po his successor when he was close to death.

Opening scene: Black, darkness.
Titles, as muffled sounds makes themselves more and more discenible.
Just as "Dreamworks presents" appears on scree, the eyes of the beholders open.
And Po awakes. In a forest. We don't know where. HE doesn't know where.All he knows is that there's two creatures in front of him. And that he's beaten up for good, even his pants tattered.
From now on, it becomes a movie about getting back his own identity, a voyage of the hero 'back to basics'. For without any memories of his past deeds,without his name, Po is once again an incompetent scaredy-cat. The travelers want to help him to some sacred place where he can find his self.
And during his voyage, we are introduced to the all-new awesome villain who, without unduly intereference from the Dragon Warrior, is on a rampaging campaign of conquest. And for the Five Furies it becomes a race against time to defend the land (thus giving them precious spotligjt!)
As the story progresses, we dsicover that Po was defeated, but he was also saved by someone and whisked away at the last moment -the travelers! And when the Bad Boss discovers at last where Po is, he sends his minions -giving some respite to the brave Five.
The baddies destroy sacred place, but this time po realizes that all he had to do was look into himself to get back what he thought he had lost. Dragon Warrior is back, final battle, Panda wins.

I think Dreamworks and other studios need to expand their writer's rooms. There's clearly a deficit in ideas among experts in Hollywood. Whether need to reach out to fans or hire a new crop of employees, something has to be done. I haven't seen the movie and as a writer watching this. My first thought was why they didn't make the Chameleon an opposite version of Tai Lung. Have her being forced to suppress her powers because it was seen as dangerous, have her meet Po and him seeing the magnificence of her power, and when he stands up for her have the establishment decide to lock her up and Po takes off with her to prove everyone wrong. Then have the furious five be assigned to bring her back. Or if you can't afford that, have Shifu go along with Po's two dads. Let it be a journey of proving that power isn't inherently bad, but it depends on who wields it. This is a basic overlay, but it sounds better than mid-villain shifter and Po relearning the same lessons.
Apparently the lead director is to blame for the movie’s short comings. I think someone said this came from a Q&A with the co-director, but the lead director wanted to turn KFP4 into a generic action-comedy (like *stupidly* comedic, even a scene about a box that lasts 20 minutes was planned).
The co-director wanted KFP4 to be more like the first two films, but she kept getting ignored since the lead director had “more experience”, and was a “yes-man” to the execs (explains the random pop-songs). He’s also to blame for the bs backstory for the chameleon since, for god knows what reason, wanted her (and Zhen) to have no backstory.
hey! i'm still watching the video and if i can offer some feedback, it would be good to have a different filter on the movie clips if that's possible, because this particular one has flashing lights that make it a little difficult and unpleasant to watch

I watched this movie in the theater last night. I really enjoyed it. Yeah, it’s not really that good compared to the first 2, but if you ask me: it’s a flawed but very fun movie. It does lack some stuff that made the others better, but I digress

Reading the behind the scenes from the girl who co-directed the movie it agitates me knowing the movie I waited eight years for could've been passable but was crock.
KFP4 is one of those cases where I don't think the movie is in any way bad. But the previous films just set the bar so high that it makes it nigh-impossible to see 4 as anything but a downgrade. That's the problem with making masterpieces. You can't make them all the time, sadly 😟

Not really. KFP 4 has several problems that include character assassination like shown in the scene with all the villains respecting Po out of no where. So I don't see how setting the bar high from the early films changes the issues present in the 4th other than setting yourself for disappointment, I guess.

Oh man, let me tell you. I love the franchise so much. You see when I was a kid. I love the first one I went to The movie theater.
Sing This first movie. I love it as a kid. The first one was always my favorite and still is the second 1 was even better because I always love the second 1 even more and the third 1, though the third 1 was fine. And okay. I guess it's not bad, but it's okay. As for the fourth one I haven't seen it yet. I'm still. Not seeing any videos. People talking about it because I would make Spoilers and I do not want spoilers but either way, I will plan to see the fourth one

Yeah, Kung Fu Panda 4 is a solid cartoon, but not as a cinematic release for Kung Fu Panda movies.
Would make for nice episodes in a Kung Fu Panda tv show, but not a full on movie.
Kung Fu Panda movies are renown for it's strong writing, rather then everything else.
This movie has some good written scenes (between Po's dad's or boat scene between Po and Zhen), but it's simply too....simple.
Like it's just another cartoon movie, that has good animation, direction and artwork, nice message and handful of good laughs.
It feels like something from Nickleodon, then LONG AWAITED SEQUEL to big movie franchise.

This movie isn’t out in Ireland yet. I’m not expecting it to be as great as the first 3 movies and I definitely see some faults with it, but hopefully I’ll enjoy it more than you did.
And yet, Kung Fu Panda 5 and Kung Fu Panda 6 are forthcoming.

at least Kung Fu Panda never skips a beat from both it's action and it's comedy plus Jack Black is Awesome as Po Never forget that
If I could make tweaks to the movie, here's how I would've done it.
Po's journey is triggered because he needs to find someone to be his successor one day, only here Po is cool with it, because he imagines how cool his student will be and talks about how he won't be judgy or strict like Shifu. The staff comes into play as his means of finding that person like a metal detector and it's in Juniper City.
Chameleon is just straight-up evil, but she's manipulative and knows how to hide her true intentions being a master shapeshifter in all that. She's a corrupt ruler who gets away with her crimes against her own subjects through charisma and framing other people like Zhen. For much of the movie, she plays the victim and benevolent ruler to Po, while we know behind the scenes she wants the staff to open the spirit realm for pretty much the same purpose in the movie.
Zhen is very anti-authority and for good reason considering the person running the city. She used to be a student at the city’s temple but left after realizing how she was helping keep Chameleon in power. So she isn’t exactly friendly to Po when they first meet. Nor has a high opinion of Kung Fu. She leads the band of thieves and other downtrodden people for survival and has pretty much accepted their lot that they'll be seen only as crooks.
Po meets her similarly to the movie, trying to stop her from stealing artifacts. When Zhen takes the staff it glows brightly meaning she’s the next Dragon Warrior. This leads to a conflict throughout the movie of Po pretty much bemoaning that the next Dragon Warrior is a criminal and not the righteous hero he imagined. He buys into Chameleon’s sob story about being small except it’s just bullshit and she knows it. So he doesn’t immediately beat her throughout half the movie because he thinks he’s helping her.
And for Oogway’s sake, develop Zhen and Po’s relationship. Have Po realize that heroism isn’t as black and white as he believed. Have Zhen rediscover the value of Kung Fu and that she can make a difference. Recapture some magic we saw with Shifu and Po in the first movie.
Keep the side plot with Mr Ping and Li. Keep the bit of Tai Lung bowing to Po. Just leave Kai and Shen out of it. Kai is supposed to be ultra-dead, and Shen isn’t a true Kung Fu master.

Michael Bay has never made a good film, The, Rock, his, "best," film, is unwatchable, whenever, Sean Connery's offscreen, and, at least, thirty minutes too long, Con Air, was the same film, with worse actors, and, claimed the career of Simon West, Transformers, was the same film, five times, BBFL, was better without him, he's just a complete hack that got really lucky, period.

I did it. I managed to watch the Fourth one and did I hate it or did I love it well? It was actually not bad. It was actually good. I mean I know there are people saying it was. Terrible and honestly not good but frankly. It actually got mean to smile because I love the first one so much. And it really did had references of it like if you're a fan of the first movie and the second one, maybe a little bit of the third 1. Then you will love the fourth one and frankly. I actually loved it like it was a little short. Honestly, but it could have been better. Could have been better seeing all three Popular villains from both 3 of the movies was honestly felt cheating a little bit because I'm not going to worry about their death anyway. But seeing the villain, the first movie I was so giddy like no joke. I couldn't tell you how smiling I was. But yeah, this move we was okay in some points, the villain. The villa was okay. Honestly, I didn't hate her. I just thought she did a really good job. She could have gotten better honestly, but I really did enjoy the villain and as for this movie, though. The humor was off, but it got me to laugh a little bit But I enjoyed it and with all this is the whole movie. I was really going to give it a 6 out of 10 button now. I'm gonna give it a 7 out of 10 like if you're a fan of the first one, you will love the fourth 1 I mean. What do you guys think I know what y'all are probably going to say like. Yeah not great as 1 & 2 or even the 3rd flim but not saying so much let's hope The Wild Robot will be amazing also the reason the trailer came so late is because of the strike but this this isn't a bad flim

The best way that I can sum up this movie as a whole is that it feels half-baked, in my opinion.
We went from a villain who committed literal genocide to a character who pulled an Omori and the character who was pushed didn't even die or get hurt.
I would reccomend watching the Netflix Kung Fu Panda spinoff show that came out two years ago. It’s okay but it’s way better than the fourth film. The villains are good not as good as Shen or Tai Lung but way better than Chameleon for sure. I’d recommend it if you want something better.
Your review was pretty fair. I thought your critiques were understandable with the Chameleon and some of the writing. I liked the movie but I felt like it could’ve been better. The pacing was too fast, It wasn’t as emotionally resonant as the first three, The Furious Five not even being at the beginning is jarring, Lord Shen and Kai feel underutilized etc. Hopefully they address these issues in future movies (cause let’s be real they’re setting up two more movies with the way this one ends)

the co-director WANTED to KFP 4 to be as a definitive love-letter to the first film and wanted to commit having really good ideas/bringing furious five back but no instead they called Catherine as a nobody...
if they ever make a fifth movie i want her to come back as a solo director (and maaaayyyybe Calvin as a co-director who appearantly worked on a short film based on KFP 4 which she said was really good but they didnt gave it a budget...)
not only that but to make it LESS JOKEY next time, and the studio Runtime mandate is absolute BS, you're telling me that Boss Baby 2 can be 15 minutes longer than a KFP movie? gtfo here Spider-verse movies and heck, some lengthy pixar films accomplished to be successful even with its young audience.
