Congrats Mr Leroy. Probably the best video i've seen to proper beginners. Amazing stuff. The visualization of the breath up and final breath was incredible
I think some people have problems with equalization because they are not aware of some groups of muscles they can/need to train and control to open their eustachian tubes, so most important thing at the beginning is to learn how to do it. I think no matter if you are using valsalva or frenzel. If they are blocked, it won't work. You just apply high pressure to a closed valve. For example I can easily push the air into my nose cavity without ear equalization, if I don't open my tubes consciously before. They can be also blocked in some head positions. I have found it's easier for me with the chin on my chest and can be really hard with eyes pointing down.
True! allthough what you are opening consciously might be more your soft palate, not your eustachian tubes. Unless you're a natural handsfree equalizer !

It's funny how I never got taught anything about freediving but instictively breathed in a way that I could hold my breath for 2 min 30 and used hands free equalization techniques while freediving in Italy. And now I hear about "my" techniques in this video :)
@@SoulWhite hmm, i wouldn't say that. awareness comes with practise. You need experience to be aware of what's going on. Common sense is not the same as experience. One might have perfect common sense but no experience. This is something you have to learn.
Really great video mate! I definitely have the most difficulty with the duck dive. I've never gone very deep snorkeling. 25-30 feet but wanted to get better. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I'm subscribing
My first experience with free diving was when I tried to recover my drone from the bottom of the lake. It was 7m below water level and the water wasn't really clear. Despite having 2000lumen flashlight, when I looked down after like 2 meters dive I saw only darkness. I noped out of there. The reason I want to learn to free dive is that I keep losing things like my glasses in the ocean whenever I go on a beach trip and I can't swim deep enough to recover them quickly. I have a high lung capacity but quickly run out of breath because I exert too much trying to sink deeper. I'm glad I found this video to help out my mistakes.

Thanks for the thorough explanation, I definitely learned a few things that I'd watch for next time I dive. I have problems with equalization through nose, not because I can't do it, more because I feel like it takes a lot of effort and air to actually fully equalize and takes away a lot of my oxygen or at least that's I think. I can hold my breath under the water half as much as I can outside of it. I'll try to work my head position, I definitely look where I'm going and put my head in that bent position.
Last week I was doing free diving training at Deans Blue Hole. Unfortunately I was unable to go below 10 meters because one ear couldn’t equalize. The pain was intense, and I had to return to the surface. This happened to me last year as well. I’m 73, so I have to be cautious. It helps having 13 years of skydiving experience when it comes to equalizing techniques. We go through similar pressure changes falling out of the sky and I can generally equalize my ears without giving it any thought.
@@IvanIvanov-gg4zt I think the important thing is the change in pressure, not the absolute pressure. Skydiving from 4000 m to sea level (for simplicity), the air pressure goes from ~0.6 bar to 1.0 bar (increases by 1.67 times). Freediving to 10 m already doubles the pressure (from 1.0 bar to 2.0 bar), every further 10 m adding another 1.0 bar. But I suppose the equalization technique might be quite similar...
WOW I use hold muy breath for 1 minute, just Now applied technique1 anda got 2 minutes. Awsome Man. I am scared yo práctice in the pool anda finish my life trip there.

I would love to do the same.
A while ago, I had no idea that some people can't equalize their ears. Because I thought everyone could just do it. When my family and I are driving in the mountains, we usually get pressure in our ears. My siblings always complain, but I just tell them to pop their ears, but they have no idea how to do it. When I told them how to do it, none of them were able to do it. Even my parents couldn't do it, even though they knew the method. I was so surprised why people always got gum and chewed on gum instead of just equalizing their ears. I thought, "Why don't they just equalize? It's so easy!" Little did I know, most people can't do it. I have no idea how I learned it, but I think I just tried it because it seemed logical at one point and I was able to do it.
Learning to hold my breath longer because i want to get into freediving. This video was very helpful to know how to actually dive! My only issue might be learning to equalize. Lol
Great video. I'm an open water diver but never learned to swim! I will be joining survival swimming lessons and hopefully get into freediving once I'm not scared of the throwing myself in the deep!😂
Thanks for the great info! I’m a scuba diver but have always been into snorkeling and holding my breath to dive down when I’m not scuba diving . I never go very deep - maybe 25’- 30’ at the most - as the valsava technique is little harder to do while holding ones breath than the frenzel technique, which I cannot yet do but am practicing. As much as I love scuba, I would really like to get good at free diving too, as I feel that it would improve my scuba techniques.
I'm only 5-6 weeks into my BSAC course, but I'd really like to learn to free dive too. I swim most mornings but I think I need to join a free dive club, it's just so far away from me :(
Thank you so much for these great tips! Been freediving lately but I always come back to your video, I sometimes forget the important tips hahaha Cheers!
I'm not sure what pressure headaches are. The only thing that can hurt in your head are your sinuses or ears. Keep your neck in a neutral position, relax the shoulders, relax the tongue and all should be fine. Do shallow dives. Dont get caught up in how deep you go. Keep it shallow. Cheers 🙏
I think of equalization as when I’m on a plane cause that’s usually what I do, although it always hurts my ears, a few times I have done it just randomly and my goodness the pain and feeling of having your ears popped from doing that sucks, so sometimes I just do the technique of swallowing lol, just watched this for info on free diving although I probably won’t get the chance to try it anytime soon it’s still helpful for if I do

I want to learn how to hold my breath and be able to free diving after almost dying last month in Egypt on a snorkeling trip. I love snorkeling, but after more than one hour alone in the water I found myself tired and in a deep water and I got panicked. I am having a hard time getting past that moment and I want to get normal and enter the waters again.
Thank you for sharing your story, and sorry for what happened to you. In freediving we never dive alone. There is a reason for that. Safety. Not just for being rescued if you would black out, for for any other reason as well like panicking in open water. I'd say never snorkel alone. Try to go out again with friends and find peace and joy in your water activities. Don't focus on learning the skills of freediving focus on finding peace. Which is a skill by itself. I've been diving to 15ft. Without fins and I think the kick is the toughest thing to figure out. I noticed that "crawling" or bicycle kicks seem to help conserve the most oxygen with my particular body because I have a very large butt and I find that kicking with my hips just causes spiraling. It's like slinging a gyroscope around and moving my butt too much kinda sends me all over the place. As a female, I have allot of boyancy within my hips especially and I also found that the banana shape helps keep me from rising. I kinda think that being stabilized under water requires a particular awareness of what your own body wants to do. My coach keeps telling me to strengthen my back, but when I attempt to strengthen up, I just start rising and it's a struggle to stay down.
Hi! Great video! I have a question though, (I’m still confused at this point) do you usually breathe when you’re underwater? Or while freediving? Thanks in advance ☺️ sending love from the Philippines 🇵🇭🥰

@@gertleroy Me neither, that's crazy..
@@GabrielCarvv ✌️
diving is totally different from skydiving, the pressure under water is much higher.
Awsome Man. I am scared yo práctice in the pool anda finish my life trip there.
always dive with a buddy
peace is within us, yeah

Thank you so much for lesson. I am appreciate. I started 3 weeks ago and just today I first time see your video. I am learning English and to fast for me, but it’s also dabble learn something good 👍 with cc’s 😃. I am so happy to have free diving a new life. Thank you 🙏 for your honesty experience. I would love to do the same.
you're welcome! and remember always dive with a buddy 🙏
I have no idea how I learned it, but I think I just tried it because it seemed logical at one point and I was able to do it.
doing it in the water however is a whole different game.. ✌️
@@gertleroy oh I find it just as easy underwater as over water, also thank you so much for replying, big fan!
I really want to learn freediving.. I think it's one of the most beautiful sports out there
it is! wish you all the best !

Thanks a lot! A good like and subscribed!
muchas graçias Jose!
Hardest for me is the equalizing part. I haven't tried your tips (checking if nostrils has pressure) but I'll follow that this coming sunday. Thanks!
cheers 🙌
Thank You so much Bro...for sharing this. It is very helpfull and easy to understand. God Bless You.
You are most welcome
Learning to hold my breath longer because i want to get into freediving. This video was very helpful to know how to actually dive! My only issue might be learning to equalize. Lol
yes that can only be done in the water
Great video. I'm an open water diver but never learned to swim! I will be joining survival swimming lessons and hopefully get into freediving once I'm not scared of the throwing myself in the deep!😂
great. all the best 🙏
ima beginner and my most difficulties are equalising ears im gonna try your techniques i hope they work for me .. thank you

Very helpful video! I am going to try freediving today, I promise, Greetings from Crete Greece :) Peace
✌️ make sure you have a buddy ✌️
Thanks for the great info! I’m a scuba diver but have always been into snorkeling and holding my breath to dive down when I’m not scuba diving . I never go very deep - maybe 25’- 30’ at the most - as the valsava technique is little harder to do while holding ones breath than the frenzel technique, which I cannot yet do but am practicing. As much as I love scuba, I would really like to get good at free diving too, as I feel that it would improve my scuba techniques.
Awesome 👍 just try Freediving 😉
I'm only 5-6 weeks into my BSAC course, but I'd really like to learn to free dive too. I swim most mornings but I think I need to join a free dive club, it's just so far away from me :(

Thank you for the video
IMHO the hardest step is the first one, it takes a lot of effort to relax and clear your mind and it does not always work
Thank you so much for these great tips!
Been freediving lately but I always come back to your video, I sometimes forget the important tips hahaha
Cheers!
Thanks 🙏
My hardest part is relaxing. I think tension in my neck is causing pressure headaches🤷♀️
Cheers 🙏
I think of equalization as when I’m on a plane cause that’s usually what I do, although it always hurts my ears, a few times I have done it just randomly and my goodness the pain and feeling of having your ears popped from doing that sucks, so sometimes I just do the technique of swallowing lol, just watched this for info on free diving although I probably won’t get the chance to try it anytime soon it’s still helpful for if I do
yes on a plane you can EQ as well ✈️✈️
You're the best!!! thank you mate!
welcome 👍🙏
Glad I stumbled across this video. As I'm wanting to get into free diving here in New Zealand for sea food. New subscriber here 👍

Welcome ✌️✌️
Wow....grerat video and great content. Thanks a lot. Now I just have to find out why I start to feel dizzy when I'm doing the 2-part breath in. Strange.
Brearhe slower. You might be breathing to fast which is hyperventilation. Relax more.
@@gertleroy gonna try that. Thanks a lot. Sometimes I offshoot when I'm eager and thrilled to try something new. ;)

Great 👍👍
I want to learn how to hold my breath and be able to free diving after almost dying last month in Egypt on a snorkeling trip.
This coming weekend we are going to have a pool party since it is Dad's birthday. I will try this one.
please don't try freediving when partying.
Don't worry we will not be drinking any beer, it is not good for our Dad's health.

Thank you so much coach. For the tips 🤗🥰

All the best 🙏
I've been diving to 15ft. Without fins and I think the kick is the toughest thing to figure out. I noticed that "crawling" or bicycle kicks seem to help conserve the most oxygen with my particular body because I have a very large butt and I find that kicking with my hips just causes spiraling. It's like slinging a gyroscope around and moving my butt too much kinda sends me all over the place. As a female, I have allot of boyancy within my hips especially and I also found that the banana shape helps keep me from rising. I kinda think that being stabilized under water requires a particular awareness of what your own body wants to do. My coach keeps telling me to strengthen my back, but when I attempt to strengthen up, I just start rising and it's a struggle to stay down.
without fins a lot depends on the DUCKDIVE. you can search for "DUCKDIVE no fins Gert leroy". hope that helps
thanks for keeping us learn more on free diving. 😁😁
Welcome ✌️
Hi! Great video! I have a question though, (I’m still confused at this point)
do you usually breathe when you’re underwater? Or while freediving? Thanks in advance ☺️ sending love from the Philippines 🇵🇭🥰
freedivers dive without tanks. so we hold our breath under water. we do not breathe under water ✌️
Hello,
For clarification, we don't exhale atleast once when we're under water? The exhalation will take place when you're already up? 😅✌️
@@johnkelso5910 correct. don't exhale underwater. only exhale upon surfacing and then do a couple of recovery breaths.
@@gertleroy oh! What im doing is totally wrong 😁😁 thank you very much! Now, i know.. .God bless! Looking forward for your new videos.
