  • I wanted to cover half the deck down at my river cabin with a patio cover, but I didn't want to hang the patio cover off the fascia--that always looks terrible. Here's the solution I came up with.

    Such a thorough investigation of the template. Your work is so detailed and I always wish I could use such perfection in my work! I guess it may just come with age and by making small mistakes here and there? I just love your channel! Take care man!

      I don't think it's an age issue. I think it's genetic. I've met a lot of young carpenters who are light years ahead of me...and some older ones I won't talk about. :) Really, all it takes is desire and discipline: do stuff over and over and over and eventually you learn. I'm a firm believer that anyone can be a good carpenter.

      I'm far from done with the van. I keep tweaking stuff. Every time I take it out I discover something that could be a little better. I think that's a carpenter's disease.

    Gary I just so enjoy your videos! Like you I am a more “Mature” finish carpenter 👊; !
    I see your shop tour video , you hv some great tools! I hv a small shop and finally after years I broke down and bought a Makita 7 1/4” cordless 36 volt rear drive and the little 6.5” cordless!
    I think you might need to retire the Porter Cable corded and grab a cordless ??
    I seen that Martinez square also! I bought a woodpecker but I kinda like that Martinez?
    Anyway Thk you brother; just can’t say it enough for all you taught me!
    God Bless!

      Oh yeah, I 'finished' the van late spring last year. Of course, I've been adding more things since then....after nearly every trip I take! And as for Rick's home in Rhode Island, we didn't think there was that much interest so we stopped working on the videos.

  • @ralphiewigs2208
    @ralphiewigs2208 3 года назад +2

    I always peg my fake through mortises and I don't tell a soul. If the peg is going through an actual tenon, it's usually a domino. Thanks Festool!

  • @2chipped
    @2chipped 3 года назад +3

    Love this!
    We are so blessed to be living with knowledge of the past,while being able to use modern tooling/hardware of today😅.
    I built a 10x16 western red cedar pergola for my sister.
    I ran 10x5/16 structural screws all the way through the upper 2x6's and half way into the the lower 2x6 beams.
    SE Ga Temps can reach over 100°,and high humidity has not twisted any of the 12 upper boards.
    Our hardware selection to 7se is almost endless.
    As always your humility, joy in teaching others,and the ability to change and be resilient are your most important traits to me!
    I've only learned about you in the last several years,listening to you on social media (modern craftsman podcast/IG ) I hope to meet you in person sometime!

    Love the look of the roof but how will you be able to replace the shingles when the time comes without removing the upper roof?

    • @THISisCarpentry
      @THISisCarpentry  3 года назад +1

      Good point! To replace the shingles, the patio cover, including the beam, will have to be 'raised up' with temp posts. We kind of figured that the roof on the cabin has another 20 years in it. So I wasn't too concerned. I'm almost seventy. :)

    Not meant to be critical, just pointing out issue. You need to listen to this video with headphones. Your video editor is rendering most of the video in mono played to one channel - part of the video has audio only on right side, part has audio only on left side, and the intro music plays in stereo like it should. Very frustrating to try to listen to when one channel is dead. If you aren't recording in stereo, you need to render it in mono to both L/R channels so it sounds reasonably good.
