  • Here we compare the Jake E Lee So Cal made in Mexico Charvel to the Jake E Lee Custom Shop made in the USA. Similarities, differences, etc.
    USA made has a skunk stripe on the neck, a different string tree, different bridge, narrower fret wire, and a truss rod adjustment at the headstock end of the guitar.
    Mexican made has no skunk stripe, a heel end truss rod adjustment, a different color, different bridge/nut material.
    Would I pay $1300 street for the MIM model with the QC issues of the one I received? Absolutely not.

    What I love about this model is at least most prior Jake models was the shorter scale neck on a Strat type body AND with a fixed bridge. The one spec though that kind of annoys me though about Jake's models is that some of his models have 21 Frets and some have 22 Frets. It seems like this model keeps going back and forth between that. What exactly is the benefit or loss by adding or subtracting just one fret? I don't get it. Just imho, 22 Frets is the best, especially for hard rock and metal. Jake E Lee no doubt is a heck of a talent, one of our 80's/90's era guitar Gods. Thank you so much for posting this as I do not recall many people actually talking about the Jake E. Lee model other than Jake in only a couple of rare showcase videos.

    The different reviews you’ve done on this guitar are awesome! Some of the most thorough I’ve seen for any guitar. Not sure if I missed this but how is the neck stability? Be nice if it was a quarter-sawn maple neck…

      Thanks for the feedback! I really appreciate it! I picked up another white lavender USA that I want to compare to the one featured in the video, see how consistent they are across years.
      To answer your question, the USA Blue Burst and USA White with Lavender have quarter sawn maple w/o graphite reinforcement rods. The MIM doesn't spec that it's quarter sawn and the grain looks a little different. It has the graphite rods in it.
      I have not had stability issues with any of the Jake's I've owned, MIM included. After I did the updated reviews I didn't really mess with it much until I was showing my buddy a few months later. It was different temp/humidity and the guitar was almost in perfect tune from when I put it away.

    • @paroblynn
      @paroblynn  2 года назад

      My purple is a different shade of purple than that Fernandes, mine is more purple blue than the Fernandes, that Fernandes is more red purple. I've never seen a photo of Jake playing a Fernandes live. I know he used ESP in the badlands days and there's photos of him using ESP live, but I've never seen the Fernandes live. It's strange that such an iconic player has such a clouded history. Meanwhile Hendrix, you can find out what briefs he was wearing on any given day.
      My purple says Charvel made in the USA but it's a custom build. I should do a video on it. I've looked at that Fernandes and I can't bring myself to buy it. I'm waiting for an ESP with a strat headstock that's reasonably priced.

    I would be totally heartbroken, especially with a signature model you expect to be pretty great out of the box. It still looks great, and I appreciate this comparison big time! thank you. The interesting thing is, the USA model Jake, is still a big different than the one Jake shows on video ("the first one they made me") where the neck is mahogany, and the frets are fat up to the 12th, then skinny. I have not been able to see those particular specs on the Charvel site, so I have to perhaps guess that this is what really separates Jakes "in hands" model to the Jake Sig model offered by Charvel. Might I be incorrect with that assessment?

    • @paroblynn
      @paroblynn  Год назад +1

      I don’t think you’re incorrect at all.
      The one Jake has been playing live has a tone knob, 22 frets, the same style bridge that the blue burst (and the old “Whitey”) has, the mahogany neck, and allegedly the different frets from 12+. Not surprising that they wanted to put some more “normal” style features on the models being sold to the public. I’ve worked at a custom shop and even there we had a bit of a time limit on the work we did to something before the cost of labor would start digging into the profits. Swapping tools to level and crown frets would start eating into the time I have efficiently and correctly get it all done. So I kind of get it, if you want the exact same specs then I think you’d have to do fully custom build and be willing to spend upwards of 5k…

    I went through the same bs went i bought my Kramer jersey star when first released. Just mind blowing defects all over 3 guitars. Two of the guitars were unplayable as the floyd dowels were drilled all the way through the back of the guitar (no big deal, but stupid) , and with holes too big. So as you used the floyd, it would start to literally pull out of the body dowels and all. Should i have to glue the dowels on a brand new (at the time)1200$ guitar? Nope. On top of that they had serious finish issues.
    I finally settled on one that had a black hair in the clearcoat after specifically asking the retailer to check the guitar before shipping as it was the third one i bought. It was very obvious they didnt take the guitar out of the kramer box.
    First, and last time i'll deal with that.

      Im not talking about preference (thats personal to each one of course) but strictly on the quality of sound, just listen to the notes on both batm riffs, USA is much more musical... Even from my shitty laptop speakers there is a noticeable difference... And i usually didnt consider high end guitars to be much different to medium level ones (i am one with many korean and indonesian guitars myself). Im also not saying MIM guitars suck, or that generally they cannot sound like a high end, but on THIS particular video the USA sounded much more alive and musical.

    The problem is the MIM facility is producing guitars with assemblers. Unless you’re buying from the Charvel Custom shop (real luthiers building the guitars, the actual old team that started Charvel with Grover) you’re getting something built by people who were trained for a day on putting a certain part together…I know that not everyone can afford the custom stuff or boutique guitars etc, but you get what you pay for. Personally, I don’t have to nor do I ever buy imports for that reason.

      $1300 is pretty steep for a guitar to suck right out of the box. Especially when every major manufacturer offers more features and “bang for the buck” than this, and they largely avoid the QC problems that this has.
