  • Macedonian is spoken by about 2 million people, principally in the Republic of Macedonia, where it is the only nationally official language, as well as in pockets of Eastern Europe's Macedonia region, which includes parts of Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Kosovo, and Serbia. A South Slavic language, it is closely related to Bulgarian, Slovene, and the Serbo-Croatian languages, and more distantly so to Polish, Czech, and Russian. Read more on Wikipedia: bit.ly/1L8QVc7.

That's a great thing about Slavic languages: they are all fairly similar enough that one can understand another and/or easily learn a nearby country's language. I speak English and Spanish, live in Canada, so I hear/read French and, therefore, I sort of understand Italian. They're really not THAT different. I also have friends and family from all over Former Yugoslavia (Balkan) countries. They understand each other well enough.

Just like Shopski from western Bulgaria.
If west Bulgaria, Macedonia and south-east Serbia were one country, they would function perfectly. It's sad that both Serbia and Bulgaria are trying to destroy these dialects without mercy. Macedonians were lucky to have their language survive.

Thanks. I wish we could. But local people are mostly ashamed of it. In movies, and TV shows, the dialect is used in a very negative way. (Hillbillies, illiterate farmers etc). Women are especially ashamed... They try to speak as correct as possible. All local patriots are men.
I know I've seen a study that said, by the end of the century, only about 200 languages will survive. (that's basically the number of countries and their formal languages.)

By the start of your comment I thought you were going to bash on Macedonians like many people do and I appreciate that you realize the similarities but understand that it doesnt take away from the language itself. My great grandparents came to the US in the early 1900’s and its frustrating to read on all of the disputes and violence spewed between some of the countries. Im determined to teach myself the language and in every video the comments are flooded with hate towards the country as a whole and its frustrating to see people so hung up on dividing rather than uniting

Today so-called Macedonian is Bulgarian language with some dialect,..it’s a Slavic language
The true Macedonian language was Albanian Geg dialect
Alexander the Great learned Greek language from Aristoteli,.. he spoke to his army in mother tongue language which was Geg Albanian
Even Capital of Athens Greece mostly spoke Albanian language or Arvanitika to get a better understanding just have look in RUclips ( documentary which shocked Greece ) you will get a better picture how Greece started to become as a nation
Most of the ancient words even though is written in Ancient Greek ,..the meaning is done in Albanian language
When Albanian say is the oldest language,..it’s not a myth,..is the ancient language of this region
Today Greek language is called romaik language or Pontic Greek language,..this language come from Istanbul or Constantinople and Anatolia ,...Greece had a population exchange with Turkey before becoming a nation,...they got rit of some Albanians as Turks and took back Pontic Greeks or Anatolian Greeks in today Greece

He studies informatics (the city of Shtip is famous as one of the educational centers of the country). Also he is fond of folklore (?) he literally said he plays folklore, but i didn't get what it means though. Maybe playing folklore music or reading and studying about it. Macedonian: те сакам (te sakam); те љубам (te ljubam)
      What's your name?
Bulgarian: Как се казваш? (Kak se kazvaš?); Как ти е името? (Kak ti e imeto?) - literally
Macedonian: Како се викаш? (Kako se vikaš?); Како ти е името? (Kako ti e imeto?)

      Kiss
      Bulgarian: целувка (celuvka)
      Macedonian: бакнеж (baknež)
      To hit:
Bulgarian: бия (bija); тепам (tepam) - dialect
      Macedonian: биjам (bijam); тепам (tepam)
99% is the same difference as British and American English. Also you are wrong. Kako is used in Serbian as well! Most of these phrases that you showed me are just dialect phrases which are not written in the Standard language. Bulgaria has many dialects as North Macedonia.

Let me settle all the arguments with this piece of evidence. My family is Macedonian and from the part that Greece took over, Aegean Macedonia, from a city now called Florina that use to be called Lerin in Macedonian. Now, for all those saying we speak Bulgarian and our language was made up in 1945, then why do my Baba and Dedo who were born before 1945 identify as Macedonian and identify the language they speak as Macedonian? Also why did their parents and their parents before them do the same? Even though we are from the "Greek Macedonia" none of our ancestors spoke a word of Greek or Bulgarian, excluding that both Bulgarian and Serbo-Croatian are relatively easily understood because they're part of the South Slavic Language FAMILY!
As for Macedonians being Greek, I actually got DNA testing done for me and my family and the results were not surprising. Yes we can all say with confidence that Ancient Macedonians were a Hellenic people who spoke a Hellenic language, but they were a separate people. Almost like how Canada and the US speak English and have similar culture/customs, but consider themselves different from one another. So when I got my DNA back, sure enough half my DNA is Hellenic (Greek) DNA (most likely Ancient Macedonian) and the other half was Slavic DNA. Macedonians are the only Slavic people who have this much Hellenic DNA in them and it is because we are still Macedonian, only we now speak a Slavic language instead of a Hellenic one.
It shouldn't matter what language a Macedonian speaks, a modern Macedonian is someone with half Hellenic (Ancient Macedonian) and half Slavic DNA mixed together. Just like if you were to take a Bulgarian's DNA, most of it would be Slavic, but a lot of it would also be from the Bulgars, the ancient Turkic people who existed in Bulgaria prior to the Slavic people coming down and mixing with them bringing Slavic culture and language. Macedonians and Greeks should not be fighting, genetically we are closer than anyone else in Eastern Europe. We have the most unique sounding Slavic language and a lot of our vocabulary and grammar has been influenced by Greek and so has our culture. The Macedonians in Greece should be allowed to speak their modern language, but I also think it's important for all Macedonians and Greeks to understand our genetic roots and that language should not separate us. We should embrace the differences we have. I hope that one day the Greek and Macedonian people can reunite in peace and use both the modern Macedonian language and the Modern Greek language to express our culture together! Let's make peace, not war

      @petervandelinderopashinov4372 4 года назад +3

@@MrAbagaz Sorry you're wrong, I had to teach myself Bulgarian. It was easy to learn because it's somewhat similar, but it still took time to learn the differences in the grammar, vocabulary, and extremely different pronunciation of similar words. My Mother and Baba who both speak Macedonian can barely understand Bulgarian, because they never bothered to learn. Oh and we also speak Greek and we're from the Greek part of Macedonia, how does that make us Bulgarian? Do you have a brain? It doesn't sound like it. And I've done genetic testing on my whole family and we're all ancestors of the people in the entire region of Macedonia. It was a 60% ancient Greek and 40% South Slavic DNA. This is what it means to be a modern Macedonian. We have the Ancient blood of the original Macedonians only we got mixed with Slavs and starting speaking the Modern Day Macedonian language. Also the Macedonian language has specific grammatical features that don't even exist in Bulgarian or other Slavic languages. One example is that we have 9 articles instead of 3 in Bulgarian and 0 in other Slavic languages. Our conjugations are very different and we have very rich verb system with up to 29 tenses. No other Slavic languages, including Bulgarian have these features. Macedonian is a distinct Slavic language that was heavily influenced by Ancient Greek. In fact it's estimated that we have over 500 Ancient Greek words that we still use and Greeks don't. The Cyrillic alphabet was created by Saint Kiril and Saint Metodi of Macedonia and was based off the Greek alphabet! Macedonian and Greek history are very intertwined and this is why we should have a Greek and Macedonia kingdom rather than being separated from each other over what language we're using. But you go ahead and keep believing what you want. I have a degree in Linguistics, so I kinda know what I'm talking about. Have a good day :)

'Айде да видим що и колко и дали нещо си разбрал от литературния македонски език, на който що ти пишувам, когато вече го съпоставяш со българския. Чакам отговор от тебе на македонски или български, па да се разберем колко са ,,исти" езиците. Поздрав и всичко добро.
Само 2 думи от твоя текст видях разлика, но ето ти възможно най-близко написан до твоя язик.

Macedonian is a dead language and was a dialect of Greek. This is Macedonian Bulgarian - the literary form of Bulgarian that is used as official language in the Republic of Macedonia. It was created in 1945 and before that most Macedonian literature was written in Standard Bulgarian. The proper term, Macedonian Bulgarian, is similar to terms like Austrian German, Swiss German, American English or Belgian French. Calling the language "Macedonian" is incorrect - it is the same as saying "Austrian" language, "Belgian" language or "American" language.

@Dean S We can't speak a dialect of "Macedonian language" because that language died before even Alexander the Great. Alexander and his empire was using Classical Greek. As for Bulgarian being a Turkic language - HAHAHAHAH - okay. Maybe you should read a book. Something different from North Macedonian nationalist propaganda. You can start with the Wikipedia article on the Slavic languages - Bulgarian is included there. The first documents in Bulgarian that we have are from the 9th century and it clearly is a Slavic language. Church books were taken from Bulgaria to Russia in the 10th century and copied and used there. Unless the Russians also speak "a asian Turkic" language, I don't see how they could have used Bulgarian books. :)

@Milosh Simonovski No, nobody in Bulgaria wants or needs land in Macedonia. And yes, there are over 2 million Bulgarians today with a grandparent or great-grandparent from Macedonia, who had strong Bulgarian consciousness, just like the 350,000 people living in Pirin Macedonia who also have strong Bulgarian identity.
So, we owe it to all these people to keep reminding the world that the Macedonian and Bulgarian are two norms of the same language; that all Macedonian literature prior to 1945 was written in Standard Bulgarian; that the Macedonian people all throughout the 19th and early 20th century were setting up Bulgarian municipalities, schools and churches with their own money and labor; that Macedonian writers, politicians and revolutionaries in thousands of documents clearly named their own language "Bulgarian" and their own people "Bulgarians".
All signs of Bulgarian identity in Macedonia have been systematically vandalized or falsified ever since 1913, and this still continues today. Macedonians with Bulgarian consciousness are repressed - we have so many examples of people losing their jobs, arrested, questioned by police, threatened and their property damaged just because they publicly call themselves Bulgarian. Their children go to schools where they are forced to learn that being "Bulgarian" means that you are "Mongol", "fascist", "occupier". All instances of mentioning the Bulgarian nation in Macedonian history books are negative and historically inaccurate, while the Bulgarian consciousness that so many Macedonian forefathers (like Gotse Delchev and Yane Sandanski) have expressed in their own writings is completely erased from any textbooks.
We should be friends, because we are brothers.
But how can we make it happen with all this rampant hate and denial against Bulgaria that your children are educated in? It has to stop.
If Macedonia comes to terms and admits the fact that we share a language, a culture and a history, it will be much easier for Bulgaria to recognize the modern self-identification of the Macedonian people, which most Bulgarians actually support.

He is speaking Bulgarian, with an accent. You can’t go to Italy, speak Spanish and have then understand EVERY single word. A better comparison would be going to London and then traveling to some villages down south and listening to them speak, it’s English, with a southern accent. Same with all villages and smaller towns having a thicker accent compared to the original city talk. Macedonians speak Bulgarian with a Macedonian accent. There’s no other influence. I can’t speak Serbian, I don’t understand Serbs. I don’t speak Turkish nor can I understand them. I speak Bulgarian and this is WORD for WORD Bulgarian. This is the same as England and America speaking English. Except America gives credit where credit is due and doesn’t pretend it’s a different language. Macedonia was only recently made its own territory, they didn’t claim to speak Macedonian before that time. They ADMITTED they spoke Bulgarian so what’s the problem now?
