- How long does it actually take to learn how to surf...8 minutes, 1 day, 1 month? To answer this, I took my friend surfing for the first time. I wanted to see how long it would take a complete beginner to learn how to surf from scratch!

So valuable!
I’m 55. Just started dating a Surfer (61 ). I haven’t been out to the beach the whole year. Anyways, he was willing to teach & I said ok. He had two 9 ft long boards. I’m 5’0. He started me off practicing paddling. Then, pushed me & I was able to stand up after 5 tries. I’ve not nose dived yet.
I’m not athletic, but semi fit. What helped me is basic home videos of: Billy Blank Boot camp, 30 minutes & HIT 5 minutes video 1-2/week ( cardio), basic back stretch in a snake position, child’s pose, Cat & Cow ( to relieve back pain from prolong 12 shifts nursing standing), and basic Belly dancing & Tahitian dancing ( home videos I picked ups during pandemic) helps me with core strength. In summary: every time before I try to catch a wave, I make sure that when I lay down that I’m balanced ( feet not hanging off the board, my listing is balanced). Also, I make sure that I push up in a snake position & then right foot first, then left foot). I’m working on popping up better. The waves in Jacksonville, FL are not very big, so good beginners for me. So, I’ve been surfing 5 times now & learning to catch the green waves. So, you’re never too old, but gosh I wish I started much younger & expose my children sooner. Many of the fantastic surfers are still killing it into their 70’s.
Btw, there are so many sports that can be learned even at any age: skiiing (46), Taekwondo(45), Scuba (46). Thanks to RUclips videos like yours & others. I was wise to watch a few tutorials that morning before my first lesson.
Very interesting and inspiring, well done and thanks for sharing!
Catching white water is easy.. it's another game catching unbroken wave, turning left or right.. and doing turns (top and bottom, and all kinds of turn ) plus trying to get out when surf is big
Hi Christine, I agree that making the change from white water waves to unbroken waves is a big step.
I'm 40 now...surfed on and off when I was in high school and my 20's but didn't get serious and focused on it until about 33. From 33 to 36 I exponentially got better. Just takes tons of motivation and focus.
Interesting to hear! For sure, the more time in the water the better
Awesome. I have a mate who will start surfing soon. This video will greatly help in his journey.
Great to hear, good luck!
Nice video, bru. Looking forward to seeing Stu’s progression. 🤙🏼
Thanks Gandalf, me too.
Brilliant informative video. Thank you.
Thank you Ji!
Good one 👍👏🏻👏🏻 Id like to see Part 2 🤙🏻
Part 2 coming up David!
Thank you for the video! From a passionate beginner surfer!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great Video🤙🏻
Thanks Dane, hope it helps mate.
Great film, cheers
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
To surf somewhat good it’s taken me about 2 years. Lots of help / patience from friends and videos like these all helped me.
I watched your video, I call you Very Good! You are riding across the face of the wave instead of straight out to the shore which is a huge step, I think. And I don't know if it's the perspective in the video or what but it appears that you are a large bloke on either of two very small boards. I think that combination makes surfing much more difficult, but I could be wrong.
Interesting, thanks for sharing!
@@AmberMaloneAZ I’m not skinny but I’m not fat either 😆
@@surfininmy40sLoL ok but I didn't mean fat, at all. I meant tall and broad-shouldered, like a muscular guy.
great video
Thanks Dustan
Started in March... I'd estimate about 50hrs in the water so far.
I'm just starting to feel like I know how to catch waves and pop up pretty consistently in surf 3ft and under.
Definitely haven't even begun to figure out what to do once I'm up.
And I have some boardsport background. Very comfortable on a longboard/cruiser, can drop in on shorter skate ramps, can snowboard.
Thanks for your sharing that, very interesting! It won't be long until small changes in direction start turning into faster more critical ones
@@TheSurfersJourney I think progress could definitely been faster with a more beginner friendly local break. I'm in Wollongong, NSW and my local is a relatively hollow, dumpy beach break with pretty short rides.
Very steep learning curve but I'm quietly confident that by learning to surf in these conditions I'll be well positioned to surf most breaks.
Hi love your vids and love the advice you are giving. I got one question to ask if you are willing to answer comment if you are willing. How do I practice maneuvers when I am not surfing?
A surf skate is a good option, as well as using visualisation. I have a surf skate tutorial, check that out for more information on how and what that looks like :) Thank you also for your support

Another excellent video!! I'm not fit but I am good at Flowboarding. Can carve comfortably and land a small Ollie. I'm 41, overweight female. I have a 10 foot foam 'magic' board. Do you think I could stand up in 18 waves? I know I won't learn as fast as this guy.
Thank you Amber. I think you could learn in less than 18! There is no reason why couldn't stand up in 6 waves just like my mate did :)
Such a great video! Question for you. I skate/surfskate goofy but surf natural. Is this fine? Or would you reccomend try change to goofy?
Thanks Jak! I think you should choose the stance that allows your preferred 'kicking leg' to be your rear leg. I think you will benefit in the long run from sticking with one stance across all sports. Let me know how you go
it took me just over a year on and off to pop up successfully multiple times in one session... and that session was only yesterday for me.
Congratulations, that is great news
Great video, where is this beach?
Thanks K L
Stu may be a fellow goofy footer but he,s a natural....)
He did very well! Excited to see how fast he will progress from here.
@@TheSurfersJourney next time on The surfers journey..will Stu go up for the floater...or pull into the barrel..)
👌🎊
Catch a wave Stew👍
More to come from Stu
@@TheSurfersJourney 😎 cool👍.
is it more difficult to pop-up if you can't do a pushup well?
Yes, strength and fitness helps!
