What are potential SIDE EFFECTS of steroid nasal sprays?
According to the NHS UK: Steroid nasal sprays do not usually cause any significant side effects if used correctly and at normal doses.
Side effects can include:
- a stinging or burning sensation in the nose
- dryness and crustiness in the nose
- a dry, irritated throat
- an unpleasant taste in the mouth
- itchiness, redness and swelling in the nose
- nosebleeds
Serious side effects are rare but can include changes to your eyesight, such as blurred vision or a cloudy lens in the eye, or problems with your breathing. See a doctor or contact 111 straight away if you have these.
If you're taking a high dose for a long time, there's also a small chance you could get some of the side effects of steroid tablets, such as increased appetite, mood changes and sleeping problems (insomnia).
HOW DO STEROID NASAL SPRAYS WORK?
Steroids closely copy the effects of hormones normally produced by the adrenal glands, which are 2 small glands above the kidneys. When sprayed into the nose, steroids reduce inflammation (swelling).
This can help relieve symptoms such as sneezing and a runny or blocked nose. It can also help to reduce the size of any swellings (such as polyps in your nose.
Steroid nasal sprays are not the same as anabolic steroids, which are often used illegally by some people to increase their muscle mass.

I was prescribed a steroid nasal spray (Fluticasone: Flonase) I was on it for over 20 years. I had frequent nose bleeds, even a couple trips to the e.r. Not one Dr. told me that this medicine might be causing this! The last time I went to the e.r. with a nose bleed, as it was bleeding and wouldn’t stop no matter how much pressure I put on it, several months ago, I was told I had a hole between my nasal passages the size of a quarter! Sure enough, on the way home I put a finger up each nostril and they touched!! I was told this is what happens when you use a steroid nasal spray for too long! It would have been nice to know this BEFORE I had a hole between my nasal passages, and this explains why I have such a hard time blowing my nose! Beware steroid nasal spray use for too long! It’s not fun! 😖🤦🏻♀️🙄
