      Most rappers (99%) are out here spitting about shooting people they never shot, killing people they never killed, robbing people they never robbed, taking drugs they don’t take. How many times Future told you he doesn’t do the drugs he raps about, but millions still listen to all his drug raps? He’s literally riding high on the charts this week pushing that drug talk *right now.* Pusha T built a whole career off the image he sold all this cocaine he never sold. It's all just entertainment, folks.
      …I’m playing Devil’s advocate here, but if we wanna play this game of whose image is fabricated and who’s not really living their raps, we can play that game all day. And I mean, ALL day.

    The lesson from the J Cole situation is to stay true to yourself and not let others push you into doing/saying things you don't believe in. I’ll never understand how J Cole, at 39, couldn't muster the courage to stand his ground against peer pressure, yet found the bravery to deliver a speech that he knew would embarrass him and tarnish his reputation. If he had that kind of courage, he should've used it to shut down the voices urging him to diss in the first place.

    As a Cole stan, I wanna defend this man so bad but tbh I can't. You're right. This doesn't just apply to hip hop, but anything that involves competition.
    You can't talk the talk and not walk the walk, period. It also doesn't help cole's case that he's BEEN talking the talk for over a decade at this point.
    Cole mentions how good he's been sleeping for over a decade. That part sticks out to me bc it almost implies that he never thought he would ever get tested.
    Kendrick poked the bear to see what it was made of, and it ended up swiping and missing him, and apologizing for attacking in the first place.
    I'mma always love Cole and his instrumental part of my childhood/adolescence, but I feel like this will be a stain on his legacy...

      The stain will only get deeper with time bro. Every song with any bar where hes talking grease, is now ruined, forever. It's the closest thing to career suicide that I have ever seen in the entire history of hip hop, and he will never recover. 99% of his fans will be turned off now in the long run as they slowly realise the implications of what he did. I do of course think he is a dope MC but he not only disrespected himself. But also disrespected people like you - his fans - and hip hop culture as a whole by ruining what was about to be a clash of the titans and some life being breathed back into hip hop. He did this to himself, and to you

  • @AXFN_
    @AXFN_ 5 месяцев назад +24

    I got lots to say: I’m genuinely surprised Patrick didn’t take the opportunity to kick knowledge and have a more nuanced take here. He puts "Never Apologize" in the title, yet If he knows his hip-hop history, he knows rappers _have_ apologised. Jay, Nas, Pac, Canibus all apologised eventually - nobody apologised *this quickly* though 😅
    The idea that he apologised to save his career is a bad take when an apology would be *far more damaging* to his reputation than losing a rap battle to Kendrick f**g Lamar.
    He’s said he’s the best and boasted, like every other rapper does, that's the norm. But as a listener of all 3, I know this is also the guy who made *"Pride is the devil"* (and he's definitely living the raps in that song at least.) 😬 He has said he’d "never beef for nothin" on *“Middle Child”* - So he’s been inviting confrontation in some lyrics and rejecting it in others. I’m surprised Pat wouldn’t highlight that, and have a more interesting conversation about that duality/contradiction.
    The braggadocio is in the bars like it is for every other rapper, but when the music is off he's being humble and self-deprecating to his peers. Even before this, there was always distaste towards J Cole's modesty and deferential demeanour. You would often hear ppl say "he's too nice", like it’s a bad thing, and that’s why he'll always "stay bronze"
    Talking about Drake or Kdot he definitely has an inferiority complex or some sort of 'imposter syndrome' saying he's _"blessed to stand alongside them, let alone chase their greatness"._ Despite having talent and a large fanbase of his own. Does that sound like "Numero U-N-O/Muhammad Ali" talk to you? Idk why y'all believed he was bout that action when he's constantly talking like this outside the booth. The fans that gassed him should've known better 🤷🏾‍♂

      @@muminrapmumin8663I agree it really ain’t too deep it’s just definitely deeper than you’re thinking. The audience that all this is going down in front of is the next generation of hip hop & the world. We all just witnessed two of the most prolific artists make crazy accusations about each other with little to no evidence to back it up that would ruin an everyday man’s reputation in almost an instant. Unfortunately many lives have already been lost over this & countless relationships have been ruined. So yeah I respect Cole for showing love & bowing out of the fight before it got ugly. Regardless of Kendrick’s triumphant victory & spectacular performances; Drake and Kendrick alike have planted an ugly seed in hip hop that I hope never sees the sunlight. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want tomorrows MC’s to resort to making accusations & leaking/baiting information back and forth instead of fully stepping outside the box & creating something entirely clever for themselves like the iconic diss tracks of the past.

    Personally, I don't think J Cole ruined his legacy, I think a better title would be the tragedy of J Cole. He has 2 issues, 1. overzealous love for kendrick. 2. overhyping of Kendrick diss to J Cole. Let's start with #2 first, Kendrick has the most mid diss on J Cole, hell some people wouldn't even call it a diss just a shot in the dark that accidentally hit him, but it was so overreacted to that now there is too much pressure on J Cole. If he responds with a diss track, we go back to issue #1, and if he doesn't reply then people look at him weird because of issue #2. Yes, there was a lot of mounting pressure on J Cole, 7 minute drill feels rushed, some good lines, some questionable lines, and the hot topic of Kendrick's 4 albums (my opinion Cole is right about TPABF its abstract art some love it some think its just ok collection of songs and be honest you probably listen to just 3 songs off that album, which for the high praise it gets is not good).
    Issue #1 the overzealous love for Kendrick is a whole different issue, it is to the point that no one wants to hear J Cole diss Kendrick in a serious manner, they just want to hear Kendrick diss somebody and it shows. 4 lines and people were jumping like monkeys seeing a banana which wraps back to issue #2. Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers was a mid album, but the love for Kendrick pushes it into the stratosphere, hell people genuinely to this day do not consider 2014 FHD a classic, and yet TPABF is? J. Cole has the possibility to have 2 Certified Diamond songs, with no features, with No Role Modelz being 1 and the possibility of Middle Child being the second. Yet there in lies the problem, J. Cole focuses on his penmanship, he doesn't want beef, he doesn't see it as a competition, he sees it as a way to project his ideas into the world. Kendrick on the other hand, with most of rap, sees it as a competition, where you can have dark beautiful stories but it is a competition through and through, because of this everyone wants to hear Kendrick diss but nobody would really like or want to like J. Cole dissing someone, no matter what you say 7 minute drill reinforces this point thoroughly even though it really isn't a diss track.
    To top this all off we have seen this before, but in the underground rap area. Raider Clan (spaceghostpurrp) vs A$AP Mob (Rocky, but mainly bari). Look up the stories of their feud, Mob jumped a Raider clan member, Raider clan beat Bari who thought he could take a 1v8. Bari, probably in embarrassment, then fueled the flames of the beef. He dissed purrps dead homie, he made members of Raider Clan or fans of purrp hate him, and yet got away scot clean for a very long time. Purrp, dissed yams, it didn't go well. He tried to be the adult be as sensible as he could while also maybe a little unhinged, and it didn't go well. I respect Cole for having the balls to apologize for what he did in front of the entire audience at his concert, but in the words of xxxtentacion talking about purrp, I respect him at the eotd, but you a ***** *** ****** but i respect you for what you were.
