Dragging Equipment on Downeaster 684 Trips the Defect Detector

  • Something hanging low underneath AMTK 90 tripped the defect detector near Sanborn Road in East Kingston, NH on December 30, 2020.
    At around 0:37 you can hear the cone of the defect detector being struck by the passing train. Defect detector audio also included.

    That was quite the strange transmission. The train crew sounded as confused as I was.
    "You have a defect."

    Interesting! I've always heard the defect detectors in other videos but had never heard what an actual defect sounded like when detected.

      It definatly is hanging lower than Normal. The forward part of that tank always hangs lower than the rear but never that low.

    the defect will be very difficult to see. it is near axle 2, which is in the middle of the front truck.

    For those who are wondering, the dragging equipment hits the detector at 0:38
    The dragging equipment can be seen if you pause the video right when the first engine is about to cross the road, look towards the from of the engine right infront of the wheels

    Great sound! So what we are looking for is the tank about 2/3 of the way back on the power unit that seems to be almost on the rail?

    as someone used to Amtrak on the NEC sounds, you do hear that diesel ahead of time. The NE regional and Acela Express are practically silent until they are there.
    Guessing since the detector tripped they will need to do a walk around at the next station or do they stop the train immediately?

    The tank at the bottom of the first train car is low. You can hear the tank triggering the detector at 0:38.

    At ( 0:38 ) did you hear an object hit something? That might be the equipment hitting the detector.

    Based on the timing of the horn and the sound of the trip, you can deduce that the defect was in fact on the first truck of the leading loco; i.e: axle two. Cool. 😎

      Its a Baofeng uv-5r actually, which is a rather cheap scanner. It just sounds so clear because the defect detector was transmitting so close to it

      The LED Lights fade in and out because of the frame rate of the camera, which is why sometimes you get that strobe light 💡 effect or in this case the fading effect

      All P42DCs on Amtrak's roster come pre equipped with K5LAs, but I'm not sure if its a hybrid or not.

      They aren't actually fading, its a weird camera effect that happens with some kinds of LED lights, these RR crossings included...

    It would’ve been even better if the detector could produce a recording that said would you stop hitting me on the top of my head this is getting old already fix that crap ha ha Ha ha ha

      This defect detector was originally installed to replace a faulty detector on Powder Mill Road (within a mile of the recording location), and I guess Pan Am had to use an old one for whatever reason
