Various Night Freights in September 2024
Not quite the trains that go bump at night, but on the CSX Portland Sub there is almost always a surge of freight activity just after sundown, spearheaded mostly by the New Hampshire Northcoast and CSX L080, a local between Lawrence Yard and Rigby Yard. The mainline freights, M426 and M427, usually run either earlier in the day or in the middle of night, far beyond any reasonable time to see them.

Chasing Midcoast Railservice From Brunswick to Thomaston (10/19/23)
Просмотров 280Год назад
Midcoast Railservice is a fairly new railroad to New England, taking over for Canadian Pacific on the state owned Rockland Branch just last year. Midcoast itself is a subsidiary of the Finger Lakes Railway, a much larger operation based in the Finger Lakes Region of New York. On this faithful autumn day I finally found time to chase RB-2, its Brunswick to Rockland train, all the way to Thomasto...

I was originally going to be including these trains in my Midcoast Railservice chase video (coming out soon), but I decided to put them into a separate video, to alleviate confusion. 0:11 CSX M427 4:12 Amtrak Downeaster 684 (With six Amfleets!) 8:38 Amtrak Downeaster 681
The Night of the Demon Train (5/31/23)
Просмотров 344Год назад
When I was quite little and in my many surfs of early 2010s train RUclips, there was always one train that intrigued me: the Loram Rail Grinder. Sometimes called The Train From Hell, rail grinders grind down the railhead to make them flat again, extending the track's lifetime without needing to replace it. I head one faithful May night that the fabled Demon Train (as my friends started calling ...
Railfanning M426 With A Large Power Move Plus Downeasters (8/29/23)
Просмотров 155Год назад
Ever since the Waterville ME shops have come under CSX's control, they've been utilizing it to reactivate droves of stored CSX units, mostly EMDs. Occasionally CSX will group these Waterville projects onto a M426 and ship them off to Maine, which gives opportunities to capture several CSX EMDs on one train- a rare sight on the GE dominated railroad. This days train had two GP40-2s, a road slug,...
Railfanning on the CSX Portland Subdivision (10/11/23)
Просмотров 132Год назад
What was once Pan Am's District 2 is now the CSX Portland Subdivision as of 09/22/23. With this update, the mileposts in this territory have changed, and all the mileposts in this video's info sections reflect said changes. After hearing of a small extra freight train (LW10) making its way to Rigby, I decided to follow it north from Rockingham Junction to Rollinsford NH, where I saw various dif...
Watching the Levee Break in Sarnia Ontario (8/5/23)
Просмотров 791Год назад
Recently I had taken a two pronged road trap, with the first stop being in Indiana while the 2nd stop was in the Canadian city of Sarnia. What's unique about Sarnia is that it has a direct rail connection to the United States via underwater tunnel. After crossing over from Port Huron Michigan, inbound CN trains then follow the Strathroy Sub into the rest of Canada. One thing that should be note...
Railfanning Around Indianapolis (Late July 2023)
Просмотров 355Год назад
While visiting a friend in Indiana, there was ample time for me to sample some of the trains there. Interestingly, the tracks here are owned by CSX, much like they are back at home, but even still the trains here are very much different, they're the same in owner only. There also seems to be a lot of foreign power going through this area, as about half the trains I saw had UP locomotives on boa...
Quick CSX Geometry Train Runby in Exeter NH (07/21/23)
Просмотров 510Год назад
I had about 15 minutes notice for this train's train's arrival, fortunately I was able to quickly get my gear together and scramble to the track side. I guess it would've been nice if something other than a former Pan Am blob was leading but beggars can't be choosers I suppose.
NHN D8 Rollin Through Rollinsford onto CSX (03/16/23)
Просмотров 315Год назад
Moments from merging onto the former PAR District 2 (now CSX), D8 puts on one more horn show as it crosses Watson Ln. If you're wondering why there's tanker cars onboard, these were picked up from Eastern Propane in Rochester NH, on the same spur as NHN's satellite gravel facility. These tankers will likely be dropped off at Dover Yard, where with a crew change, D8 will be given the CSX designa...
CSX Geo Train Buzzes By Rockingham Junction (2/22/23)
Просмотров 197Год назад
I was not aware that there was a geometry train coming up the former Pan Am District 2 until it was about ten minutes away from my house. Fortunately I was able to quickly get myself out of the house and to Rockingham Junction, where I was able to catch it with less than a minute to spare! As always, enjoy!
CSX Welded Rail Train Through Rockingham Junction (12/10/22)
Просмотров 464Год назад
A symptom of all the track work CSX has been doing on former Pan Am rails is every once in a while, a welded rail train will snake its way past Ayer and up the New England coast. On this particular day this train is headed up to Mattawamkeag Maine, where some of the rails there haven't been replaced in decades. Another very welcome sight as CSX continues to give the former Pan Am system the TLC...
CSX M426 and M427 Meet at Rockingham Junction (12/08/22)
Просмотров 741Год назад
Its not often you're in just the right place at just the right time to watch two freight trains meet, especially when one of those had basically half of CSX's EMD roster on board. Out of frame is the massive amounts of work CSX is doing in the area, including mountains of discarded railroad ties and new track infrastructure actively being installed (new signals maybe?). All the work the interlo...

If the train isnt at least 35-40 cars it should be cancelled until there is enough traffic to justify the cost of running the train. It doesnt matter if it a captive market. It makes no sense to run two locomotives at $1750 an hour to pull eleven or twelve cars. Waste of money.

Does it make any economic sense for NHN to run these short nightly trains? 🚂 Fuel costs alone would say no. 🛤️

@@stevenconnolly7907 I think the only reason it could be viable is NHN is owned by Boston Sand & Gravel, which is where the trains go. Shipping in house is always cheaper vs paying a 3rd party to do it

as someone used to Amtrak on the NEC sounds, you do hear that diesel ahead of time. The NE regional and Acela Express are practically silent until they are there. Guessing since the detector tripped they will need to do a walk around at the next station or do they stop the train immediately?
