I used to watch W.O.S. when i was 5 years old and look forward to the banger racing part of the show, also i think they showed truck racing too. I would love ITV to show banger racing again, racing brand new ugly cars like the Nissan Juke and anything made in Korea, now that would be fun
Couldn't do this in a modern car.....they'd all drop into limp mode!!! Definitely a race for Farina's judging by the number of them, gutted to see a 2 door Corsair in the mix though cos they never made many of them and imo they look class
Watching this today, really got tears in my eyes. Destroying all those nice Farina BMC,s is really tragic. But back in those days, these car weren't worth anything. They were all scrapped.
And they was probably all on drum brakes as well👍👍. Brilliant. My dad used to do the old Mike parker hell drivers at Nelson, rochdale & white city in manchester. Dog track back then. Rochdale been his favourite track. He used to be the only driver from yorkshire. The bangers or wreckers used to be on the same meets as f2s & hell drivers and think the f1s as well. Good old days would be nice to see any footage of the hell drivers if any body has any that has survived. Great footage though thanks
Yes, but by the early 70s those cars would be around 6 to 10 years old MOT failure or perhaps a few months ticket left to run , probably needing welding & a lot of mechanical work as well, they'd be bought for well under £80. The latest car I saw in that race was a FD Victor , which had come to a halt, there were a few early Corsair's one a rare 2 door Consul Corsair circa 1963/4!
1:31 look at the spectators back away as the car goes into the post, don't see people budge an inch these days even when cars are being followed in, flat out. Different times.
I remember a caravan banger race and a double decker bus race as well. My parents lived round the corner from Wimbledon Stadium so knew when it was on WOS as the ITV sport vans used to drive past early in the morning!
Yes they had a LWT outside broadcast Bedford truck which was F registered & was probably new when LWT started in 1967/8, it was used at numerous events like Horse racing & Football. They had slightly smaller Bedford& Ford D series as well.
The only hint of current banger practice is that they DID use steam tanks. Other than that it looks like all they did was kick the glass out & remove the seats. Maybe they are all running from motorcycle tanks? No real wrecking. It was a honest race. if they were using old shitboxes. What would they have reckoned if you told them that in thirty years time people will think nothing of smashing up a Rolls-Royce.
Yeah, very true. Bit like what I used to do years back when I raced a Granada MKII, Cortina MIV and a MKII XR2. They were all rot boxes and weren't worth anything.
I haven't seen banger racing for about fifty years. Great entertainment. Much more interesting than the rule-ridden bore fest that F1 has become. Hard to know how it worked economically. The takings on the gate couldn't possibly have paid for the event.
I don't see a MkIII Cortina but I do see a Ford Corsair (number 130 at 5:38). This is the first time that I have seen a Ford Corsair on a banger track!
@@georgejacob3162 I raced a Corsair at Wimbledon in the 1970's. Fitted the full harness seat belt at home, drove it to the stadium and as stated by others kicked the glass out, removed other glass like headlights etc.cooling fan blade, all seats, apart from drivers, raced it all night and left it there for Blondie Melbourne and his Dad to clear away. Ahh, the good old days!!! Dickie Bird 233.
Agree, but cars were not built for the banger track. Most of these crash fairly slow and in everyone goes relatively in the same direction. A head on at a reasonable speed and the car could kill you. A55s ruled the banger track Yea!
Incredible to see this. Proper nostalgia seeing my grandad Dick Dawkins racing
WOW!
This brings back a few memories. I used to love watching World Of Sport if I hadn't gone to a football match. Thank you for posting
Glad you enjoyed it
Surprisingly High Definition photography for that time. Watching those old bangers was a delight.
Loved World Of Sport when I was a kid. And this stock car racing: driving through downtown Vancouver is a similar experience.
World Of Sport used to show some cool stuff, thanks for posting this.
All this is apart of my childhood, R.I.P Dickie Davis

Remember this like yesterday ! The smells the sounds at Crayford stadium
Used to do a figure of 8 race 😱
Sadly I remember it as yesterday too.........when I recorded it off TV :(

Better days, sadly passed. Great retro Banger footage brilliant 😆
Ok World of sport wssn't all the top notch sport that Grandstand used to have. But it was a lot more fun. Used to enjoy the Double decker bus racing.
RIP DICKIE
I love the car with R-Send on the back. Quality!
I used to love this and the wrestling before the footy results. Good times.
Watching this today, really got tears in my eyes. Destroying all those nice Farina BMC,s is really tragic. But back in those days, these car weren't worth anything. They were all scrapped.
Was horrible to see. They also race P5’s on other races
They would be worth a fortune these days if they had been looked after
NEVER SEEN A LONDON TAXI MOVE SO FAST
Nigel King, what a legend on the mike, fabulous
He was also a very good Superstox driver before he took over the mike.
Great footage Thanks for sharing
I'm not a banger racing fan but I'd rather watch this that effing football!
cudnt agrea more man, y cant they put footie on the bbc2-4 or itv 2-4 instead of main 5 chanels ?????
That is wot you call banger racing no stupid crash trains
Check out the taxi cab shunting Dawkins just like a modern cabbie :-)
When Saturday afternoons were the best. As a youngster watching this...
Arlington Stadium. Wolseys, Austins, Cortina P4 Rovers...... Happy Days :)
2:12. Ford Corsair!
Vauxhall PC Crestas!
It wss a lot more fun wstching World of sport than Grandstand.
look how safe banger racing was as the cars didn't crumple now it extremely dagerous because of the crumple zones on cars today
They didn't need cages back then by the looks of it!

I stopped watching World of Sport when they stopped showing this.
If anyone knows of any footage from the Banger scene in Reading from the late 70s I’d love to see it.
Slower back then but the cars were so cool, modern cars aren’t the same
Hi! I think you'll find the commentator is Nigel King. Spedeworth and World of Sport, back in the day !
Back when you could just buy a car take out the glass and interior and then take it to the track.
Richard 'Dick' Dawkins can be seen driving his banger @ 0:10 , long before he became famous as a scientist.
Expensive, quality cars when they were new !

great video thanks for sharing. great to see some old school action.
Many thanks for posting this. Hopefully you've got more like this, great stuff!
No problem, glad you like it, and your right about most of today's commentators. :)
i also wish you had more of these. brilliant. thanks for sharing

@jagman211 ......Thanks for that, I always thought it was Dickie Davies, but then when you listen again, it's not him. Thanks again.
Thats Classic Banger Racing for you with the great Nigel King doing all the talking.......
It was 1978 or early 1979, because Dicky was the reignining World Champion that year
The Farina body cars dominated 60's & 70's Banger racing..
The only hint of current banger practice is that they DID use steam tanks.

800 numbers were temp drivers numbers raced on the day
It's like a Monty Python take on F1. Utter chaos and no one sure if Dick or Roger is in the lead.
168 malcolm girling as red cross on roof which means he was English champion
Yeah, very true. Bit like what I used to do years back when I raced a Granada MKII, Cortina MIV and a MKII XR2. They were all rot boxes and weren't worth anything.
*looks 7 years into the future and see's xr2's for £15000 easy top end*
my wife used to race corsair and 3l victors on speedworth
Love the Corsair!
I found that race absolutely gripping!
It was my dads VCR. I'm sure it was the Phillips N1500 VCR we had at the time.
I haven't seen banger racing for about fifty years. Great entertainment. Much more interesting than the rule-ridden bore fest that F1 has become. Hard to know how it worked economically. The takings on the gate couldn't possibly have paid for the event.
Refering to the footage being 35 years old this race was in 1976
@chunder27 Looks like Ipswich, Foxhall stadium.
My pleasure, just wish I had more :(
I cried
ipswich is a brilliant track for stock cars, cowdenbeath racewalls the best though
I remember this
Every saturday afternoon and it would be the first Saturday after Christmas when world of world would have the
No problem, just a shame I don't have any more :(
Thank you :)
Thankyou so much for this did you have a Panasonic VCR back in the late 70s?
239 you fuckin legend!
@RazSux ....Sorry, this is the only one I have :(
1970s ex bank robbers getaway cars
6 or 4 cilinder engine?
you can buy one of these for under 500
Pat Rhodes was one of the best
that mk3 cortina :( makes me sad
I don't see a MkIII Cortina but I do see a Ford Corsair (number 130 at 5:38). This is the first time that I have seen a Ford Corsair on a banger track!
Toad Rage i think he meant the vauxhall victor 2000
