The Beatles Song That Made Oasis's Sound

- If someone talked to me about how they thought Oasis just made blatant Beatles ripoff music, this Beatles song would come to mind first. But could it also be one of the best Beatles songs, if not rock songs, ever? We run and douse our heads in the Rain to find an answer.
(Oasis has some great records though, they're not ripoffs. except for that Coke lawsuit fiasco. that might have been a little bit of a ripoff)
This is pathetic and completely shows you have no clue about Oasis or the Beatles and music
Nice try, Liam! We all know how much you love "Rain".
Wait… what? This was a great video
Never saw anything great about Oasis. Just parrots with lots of hype.
Just talking about influences, great music that inspires new great music. It's more pathetic to insult a whole 10 minute video with a single measly, unbacked comment.
@@KentonJosephthey’re sound was unique and they had the songs and the vocals
Funny thing that oasis was initially called Rain
A band from Manchester shouldn’t be called anything else
i just fact checked this for myself. ☝️
Rain was without Noel
is it the same Rain band that impersonate Beatles?
This song Rain, along with Hey Bulldog and old Brown Shoe are three of the most underrated Beatles tracks ever recorded.
And ‘you know my name’
@@salmanrahman1290 and that also..
Greaaaat tracks, solid comment
“It’s All Too Much” as well.
@pjdj I think there's a video for that on this channel!
Made this connection myself a few years back and it seems like Blur, rivals of Oasis also took inspiration from a single Beatles song, Wild Honey Pie, sounds like so many blur songs. Maybe the Beatles are just so creative that they hit all these genres. Even chemical brothers sound like tomorrow never knows
Many Blur songs sound like Wild Honey Pie? You sure you got the right song title there?? 😅
Just learned that George didn’t play on Rain! John played lead according to Apple Music credits
The guitar sounds like John's strumming style.
John played rhythm. There's two guitars playing.
Apple Music Credits is wrong. That's George on lead.
So cool they released the backing track at normal speed on the Revolver remaster.
So tight and precise making the drum part even more impressive
Shame they stuffed it up since Paul didn't record the bass at that speed.
Powerhouse of a song. Ringo and Paul really show how good they are on it
Ringo has always said that Rain is his favorite performance on a Beatles song
Ha, made my comment while halfway through the video, he mentions that it's Ringo's favorite towards the end
Also getting inspired by the Beatles is not a Bad thing at all
No it’s I am the walrus they made 8 albums of
Getting INSPIRED by them isn't a problem but becoming extremely derivative of them definitely is.
Great video! It's no secret Oasis drew on the Beatles for inspiration. They admit it a thousand times. They do not sound more like the Stones and the Smiths have nothing to do with their sound. Let Forever Be.
Is that a mother fucking Chemical Brothers reference? I love you CanYouDigItMan
Ringo's had about 70 years to sort out his technical problem. I'm glad he hasn't.
It's iconic!
kula shaker also "kinda" covered it whilst at a gig ..pretty beautifully
Do one on how The Rutles got their sound.
"The band that made every band's sound" and its just the biggest Beatles anthology playlist
Video title is "How 'Blackbird' Influenced 'Oppa Gagnam Style"
Blows my mind this channel has only 499 subs...well I'm the 500th!
Good! First time I ever heard rain, back in the 90's I was impressed on how it sounded like Oasis. Completely agree. The second harmony sounds more like john instead of Paul though
George Harrison didn't like the Band Oasis. He especially didn't like the guy who sang lead. This is what George Said:
*Harrison found their music to be surface level when compared to the rich history of rock in England*
*The music lacks depth, and the singer Liam is a pain, the rest of the band don't need him,” Harrison once said of Oasis*
He was wrong.
@@robertloader9826 He was right.
that didn't stop him from sharing a heineken with the older brother and from schooling him on carl perkins and churry berry
@@coffeesnob7600no he was wrong it’s like getting rid of Lennon
How can you compare Lennon with Gallagher? 😂
I agree that 'Rain' had a strong influence on Oasis, but have you also noticed the influence of The Rutles?! Seriously! Listen to 'Piggy In The Middle' or 'Cheese and Onions' !!
The quote from Geoff Emerick there
"The Beatles played the rhythm track really fast so that when the tape was played back at normal speed everything would be so much slower, changing the texture. If we'd recorded it at normal speed and then had to slow the tape down whenever we wanted to hear a playback it would have been much more work."
_Literally_ makes no sense.
Sure it it does. The goal was for playback to sound slowed down and draggy. You can achieve that either by: 1) recording at normal tape speed and slowing it down for playback, or 2) recording at a faster tape speed and then dialing it back to normal speed. Because the key you're in at playback is the key you need to match the dubs to, it's easier record the backing track by method #2 because you lock into that key. Then you can record all your dubs at normal speed and you do not have to play around with them to get everything in tune. Then the only track you have to worry about is the lead vocal which is the oppose dynamic of the rhythm track: recorded on a slower speed and a lower key and then sped up to pitch.
the original fast version is in the deluxe boxset
I've heard it, I think somebody else pointed it out but it shows even more how awesome Ringo's performance is on the song
Noel has never denied the Beatles influence.
For the past 10 years I've had an Oasis Spotify playlist that starts with Rain.
1st time I heard Oasis (live forever) they sounded like the band Bad finger (come & get it). To my ears anyway.
McCartney wrote come and get it for Badfinger finger
@@aveenburney7463 Yes I know, There's a whole video here somewhere on how they recorded it with Paul supervising them. He spead up the pitch of the vocals. I also always thought if the Beatles continued in the 70's, we would've gotten Oasis alot sooner.
The Oasis sound came from number of influences, including Slade, T-Rex, Sex Pistols and contemporaries like Stone Roses and Teenage Fanclub.
Gallagher included a few Beatles quotes and tributes in some songs but they were never found to have plagiarised them. They did however plagiarise the Rutles!
I know. Don't ask about Green Day.
Great video. Love your style man. Great inclusion with that Eongo clip. As a deummer myself I hadn't heard it and it opened up more of my understanding with how he plays.
Started making essay videos myself. Who isnt these fays am I right? Ive been worling on mt next one that will be about John Lennon and my own connections to him and his music.
Peace man.
The Bongwater's version could easily be part of Grim Fandango's soundtrack. Amazing video man, great data! I've been a fan for over 20 years. Keep the videos!
Damn, a lot of haters in the comments. Haters gonna hate.
You said it, not me :D
Nice to see King Gizzard in your opening montage.
Bong water…Shoegazer ? Who the hell are those groups, lol. I’ve lived a bit, but missed the likes of them! Great post.
Ha, I'll admit Bongwater was also a new one for me when I made this. Shoegaze happens to be the greatest genre of music ever, if you want to explore a bit, the essential album is Loveless by My Bloody Valentine from 1991, legendary stuff.
Oasis members Greg Brent and Steven Krutt both tried out for the Beatles in 1985 when Paul was working on relainching the Band with Ringo. They signed NDAs that forced them to change their names in order to join any other bands, despite Paul and Ringo losing interest in moving forward with their Beatles 2 plans.
Interesting, I didn't know about this! Didn't even know about the attempted Beatles relaunch either but not surprised it went nowhere.
so what were their names when they joined oasis? nothing comes up when i search their names w oasis
Yes, very accurate! You nail it. Rain defines Oasis Sound on Definitely Maybe his best record. Also Wonderwall LP by George.
There is also a Stones 'B' side that is so like 'Rain' that it is unmistakable.
Unfortunately, I cannot remember what it is called.
Wind
Child Of The Moon?
@@FarrellCapper Child Of The Moon! Exactly.
Thank you, FarrellCapper. And I can now here it in my head, clear as a bell. Glad I am not the only one who thinks that sounds like 'Rain'.
@@garyjameswilson Thanks. Do you mean 'Wind Call'? If so, that does not sound like 'Rain' to me.
Stones only have one singer.
CRAZY that George Martin tried to claim credit for the backward vocals. I believe John
I think it's a mix. There is John's version, George's version and there is the truth somewhere in between. I think George Martin - the non-stoned one - edges it though.
And it's crazy that John tried to take so much credit for Eleanor Rigby despite everyone else who was there saying otherwise. I believe everyone else who was there.
Why would you believe John over George Martin?
Lennon is well known for bullshitting plenty about the Beatles history and just generally saying the first thing that comes into his mind without thinking
George Martin did a lot of that
The bassline sounds a lot like the Stones Roses
How about Just Another Rainbow, John Squire (Stone Roses) and Liam just came out. RAIN-bow... wondeful stuff that.
I listened to an Oasis sample three times in my life. Each time I heard a fragment I could only think of the Beatles, who did everything better.
ringo was such a great drummer, he was so sporadic and it his drumming was the glue between everyone
Just found your channel really glad I did
Always thought Oasis had a Beatles vibe. Some artists more recently (last two decades) Lenny Kravitz and Robbie Williams used elements derivative of the Beatles cleverly integrated into their compositions in various songs. Yes the fab four have influenced so many. Oasis were fantastic IMO.
More like it made Liam's vocal style.
The new song by Liam Gallagher and John Squire, Just Another Rainbow, sounds like The Beatles Rain
I’m glad I found this channel
There is no such key as G# major - I think you mean Ab major. (1 min 30)
Nope. Meant G# major
@@themusicalinfluenceweb Perhaps you should brush up on your music theory. As I said, there is no such key. What would be the key signature be of G# major? It would need to be 8 shaprs, with only 7 notes!!!!
What would be the leading note? Fx ?
It doesn't exist as a key signature.
@@TheKipperedOne actually you are right. I didn't mean G# major, I meant A########### major
Bass was played by George Harrison. Paul was not in the studio. Thats why Paul hates this song
Man! Of course Oasis are singing about rain. They're from Manchester.
you might call it the small faces or t.rex song that gave oasis their sound
I ALWAYS HEARD A JOHNNY ROTTEN FROM THE SEX PISTOLS INFLUENCE ON THE VOCALS MAINLY, HOWEVER I SEE WHERE YOUR’E COMING FROM

You discovered America !! It’s pretty obvious
??
Yup. I've always pinpointed this Beatles track as a clear inspiration for the Oasis sound. Weirdly, a lot of people I make this point to, don't seem to hear the similarity...
In my mind, the Beatles revivalism sound in the UK in the 90s is primarily Abbey Road/Let It Be era with influence from earlier songs like this one. Oasis specifically though sound like this song the most
She Says She Says is totally Oasis!!! 5:33 5:35
Well, that stripped down, 2 guitar style - basic chords with more overdrive/less heavy distortion, was the sound of Britpop - a sort of British grunge. One of the many trends The Beatles got to first. Although Rain obviously influenced Oasis, that’s just one song, and Oasis can’t realistically be compared to The Beatles in any other way. I’d generally compare them more with the Kinks - although nowhere near as good.
The same way Kevin Parker got the Tame Impala sound from No Quarter by Led Zeppelin
Which Tame Impala songs song like No Quarter?? I have never thought this personally
@@themusicalinfluenceweb the general sound of the two first albums, especially Lonerism
@@antoniolucas98 Innerspeaker is like 60s/70s psych rock and Lonerism is 70s psych and pop, both with Lennon vocals, I mean I'd get some Zeppelin comparison but specifically No Quarter, I don't know about that. Check out some early 70s German groups like Amon Duul and Can for a lot of Kevin's influence on those two albums
In the UK & Ireland Oasis are Gods
I know, I knew this when making the video so I was expecting a great response since I like Oasis too but I think about half of the comments on this video are other Brits shitting on them lol
Oasis does not sound like the Beatles by any stretch of the imagination.
Are you deaf? But no, really. That’s the only way this comment makes sense.
Literally only one of Liam’s affectations but pretty cool nonetheless
Yes lol I was joking around with that part a bit I think. Looking back I'd probably include better Beatles-sounding examples if I made this today
I don't hear it. Not only is "Rain" stylistically very different to Oasis' music (apart from having two guitars) but Oasis never recorded anything
remotely as complex as this song. They played glorified bar rock...
It’s all Crowley
Oasis sound and look like buzzcocks live (also from Manchester ) up until tony the drummer left
Great vid
Great video, nice work
John Lennon is singing the higher harmony over his own voice during the chorus section. I can clearly hear it.
Woah, I just relistened and listened to the isolated backing tracks and you might actually be right. I was completely certain that was Paul but the higher harmony does sound a lot like John. It's like the highest notes I've ever heard him hit (even though it's probably sped up and the pitch is artificially higher). It just always sounded like something more likely to be in Paul's range to me but the vocal fry is way more John.
Great video; thanks for your work.
Thank you for watching!
Or maybe they were both just British and high
She Said She Said is better drummin
One minute of any of the 300 or so songs these English lads did is enough for every single music maker since to get a career and loads of money 💰
I have never heard anything by Oasis before, but I can definitely hear the obvious Beatle influence, a little too obvious.
Long live Blur!
Tracy Jaaaacckkkksss
Great video essay and some really good takes.
Thanks for this!
They wanted to be Lennon, they ended up more like Status Quo.
Liam > John
Noel Gallagher also pinched it for this, mixing it with Ticket to ride and the drums from tomorrow never knows. ruclips.net/video/wrSg6ENswyo/видео.htmlsi=oqKhHQx9gX36_hpp
Pretty interesting. Between you and me, one of my future video ideas is regarding one of those things.
I think theOasis Beatles thing is overdone.
The thing is all Oasis songs have a sound. They lack versatility
What’s wrong with sounding like the Beatles I mean they are the best It’s like an insult to be compared to them. But if you sound like led zep you get championed 😂 Also oasis out sold most other bands when they where around, must of been the Beatles affect 😊
I think that the analysis is good, but something in the argument is missing. You just proved the way The Beatles created a sound. But the way you deduce that is the sound that inspire Oasis has a hole. You must show how Oasis got their sound and in what way that techniques influenced Oasis techniques. Just showing that Rain song might be similar to Oasis, does not prove your point.
You made a great video and then ended with this really bad song. Obnoxious 😐
Really? I feel the opposite about it
The problem with Oasis is not just they're "a so so band with incredibly unpleasant members" but the fact "they believe" they were the Beatles themself is way beyond comprehension...
now talk about how Paul and the gang ripped off Freak Out by the mothers and Safe as Milk by Beefheart
"Oasis is the greatest band there ever was - ever, always forever" - Oasis, probably.
Don’t really think oasis even sound like the Beatles
Agreed. I never understood that comparison.
@timmckeown1313 it’s just cause they where openly Beatles fanatics.
..I always thought oasis sucked sh!t, doesn't sound like Beatles, sounds like sh!t
Swearing is allowed on my channel so you know.
@@themusicalinfluencewebgood to know. Oasis is ass. Always were. It's derivative of Beatles in spots but void of anything that makes the Beatles excellent.
Funny how Oasis is completely forgotten now.
I remember when Rain came out . . . I thought it was a shitty song, an early piece of trashy psychodelia. Everyone was so stoned out of their skulls that all they wanted was to just show off. Geoff Emerick underlines the above going further by stating that the only "coherent" passages were badly pushed by George Martin. Now, if Oasis has to rip off Rain to "make" their songs . . . beware!
You've had 58 years to reconsider, and I'm sorry that you didn't. It's one of the Beatles early masterpieces. If you still think this song is just stoned psychedelic nonsense, man you are just at the very tip of the iceberg at how weird music can get.
@@themusicalinfluenceweb You live in a world where music gets "weird"? It's you right. Just keep in mind that it is just POP, musical fast food, wear-and-throw away stuff. No need to make so much noise, no need to throw around the word "masterpiece" to any garbage. What an irony! I was a jazz student then and the only in a group of "snobbish" friends who listened to the Beatles.
If Oasis locked themselves in the studio for 2 months they couldn't sound like the Beatles. They have nothing to do with them. Loud , tune less and noisy.
Oasis rips off the Beatles. They don't have a sound.
I have to massively disagree even though Oasis hasn't really been relevant since the 90s. Give their first two albums a try, they're solid and hold up great today in my opinion
Oasis early stuff was far more of a hybrid of sex pistols, t rex and slade than the beatles
@@DH-TV That doesn't do what you think. They failed at that so started living off the Beatles. I see a pattern here.
Have you ever actually listened to Oasis?
