I have the gold barb variety . I got 15 in a four foot tank they are so cheeky full of confidence . They love food and are very greedy . But i love them best small fish i have in my tank
They do have a tendency to be territorial and can be semi aggressive. I had a big group (2M 8F)and the largest female took over half the tank and wouldn't let any fish in her territory. I had to get rid of her and everything was fine.
I have a male that does that you can try removing her or putting her in time out for a while or you can even buy a time out box and keep them in it for a week or so and sometimes that changes their behavior also switching the decor around will sometimes confuse the fish into stopping that behavior. Worse comes to worse you can rehome the fish and replace it with a new more tame fish.
Breeding these is quite easy and fun , don't really bother with small live food for the fry I just give em boiled egg yolk done this with rams , angelfish , neons Works really well it's cheap and easy to make , it's a good alternative for anyone who wants to breed fish with the really small kind of fry 😊
I don't know why people call this a passive fish. These get pretty aggressive in my 55g. They're always trying to breed so they're chasing each other and sometimes my other fish get caught in the crossfire too, such as my ember tetras or smaller honey gouramis. They won't mess with my black neons or corys though. While they are cute and I like the fact that they will swim anywhere in the tank (and even peck for food at the bottom of the tank), I will be returning mine and get more black neons for a calmer vibe tank.
Yeah, I definitely think they do best in a tank with other robust fish. Things like Zebra Danios and Von Rio Tetras that are decently outgoing and hold their own.
@@CommanderWiggins might do a tank of those in a 20g but way more females per males. One of my females passed so it's 2:3 males and they go nuts. It's unfortunate that they eat their own eggs though. Would Cherry barbs be good with cherry shrimps?
@@MatchuCT I think that they'd be ok, but Cherry Barbs are also pretty much fish shaped garbage disposals that will eat or attempt to eat just about anything. So they'll very likely eat a good portion of the young shrimp. So if you want a slow growing colony of shrimp they'll be perfect!
One of my favorites for color and an easy peaceful community fish. Unfortunately too small for my current setup. Thanks for highlighting this cool fish.
Cherry Barbs are undoubtedly some of my favorite fish! I'm glad you agree that Cherries need a larger school than the default of 6. I also think that there may be some merit to reversing the gender ratio. Obviously every situation is different, but I have 10 males and 5 females in my 75 gallon, and they're actually pretty mellow. The boys keep each other busy enough that no one fish gets singled out and bullied, and they keep to themselves and leave the girls alone. (This wasn't intentional, they were too young to sex when I got them. It's been well over a year since I got them, they all reached maturity a long time ago.)
i bought neon tetras to keep with my betta but they keep dying one by one each day. my betta is not even attacking them... guess they're not hardy fish. are these fish hardy enough for fish in cycling?
Hey Jason and Joanna, I've recently come across your channel and I'm so thankful for the help! I'm new to fish keeping and am about to get my first tank-- a 10 gal. I did some research, and was thinking if it would be a good idea to keep a peppered cory, a panda cory, two ghost shrimp, 4 guppies, and 5 CPDs in the tank together? If not, what would be a good compromise? I love the bright purple and blue colours... Also, what kind of food should I get for them? I know CPDs are picky eaters and I want to get something they will all enjoy. Thanks a lot!
Congrats! I like your stocking. The only thing I might change is instead of the corys you mentioned take a look at 4-5 Pygmy Cory cats. You might enjoy them more in a 10 gallon. We feed all our fish Northfin foods and all the fish you mentioned eat it without any issues. Good luck!

How do you avoid having Cherry Barbs mating? I wanna get about 5-7 of them for a 29 Gallon tank with some Tetras and Bristlenose Pleco’s. But just afraid that they’re gonna spawn since Petco doesn’t separate them by sex
Could a 20 tall be ok to try breeding these? I've had them for over a year and I would like to try to get at least one round of breeding with them over buying more I have ten three males the rest females.

But I don't have another tank to put them in to try to save some fry 😥 They r pretty young and only bout 1.5", kinda surprised they r spawning already. I only have a half gallon hang on breeder box I could use, would that be too small to put a pair in briefly to try to save some eggs? Not sure if they'd be too stressed to continue spawning..

I read that these fish eat hair algae, which is what sparked my interest in them. But I’ve watched your video and a couple others, and nobody has mentioned that yet. Is this a myth?

You forget to mention that they are pigs. Mine gobble up every scrap before anyone else in my tank can get to it. It's a wonder mine aren't so fat they can't swim!
You didn't explain anything about breeding them. I've had my male and two females with each other for about a year now and nothing. Definitely more then just putting males and females together. They do not need a large group of 8 or more at all. Reason why they don't school tightly is because they don't need a large group. Keeping just three with each other is just fine. I've had my three in a five gallon tank and they were doing great. Definitely don't need at least 20 gallons
In the breeding section I did explain how to breed them and addressed your question directly. They are egg scatters and they will eat eggs and fry so they rarely survive unless you add a spawning mop and remove it after breeding. The last few minutes explain the process.
They breed so much that unless you want 100s of fish let the parents eat the fry trust me as long as you have hiding places some will survive I started with 5 fish 3 females and 2 males and now about 4 months later I have close to 20. Just let me do there thing survival of the fittest unless you plan to sell them or something
