I"ve kept Platies for years. Alone, in communities, and some breeding projects I've since stopped. RIght now I'm down to a single 180, with Angels and BN cats. THe Angels keep the population in check, and the 100 or so Platies are happy as clams, playing all day in the heavy plant cover. 78-79F, pH around 7.4, and typical CHicago liquid rock (GH/KH 15+).
Thank you Jason. Love getting "back to the basics." So many people take these "beginner" fish for granted and they are definitely well worth admiring and keeping at least once in your fish room!
Thank you guys for this video! I agree, you don't hear much about Platy's, and they do have a great personality. I wish I would have know earlier to get more females to my one male because he did chase her around quite often. I spoiled her, if that's a thing. I brought her back from a terrible pregnancy and death spiral, sent her to a "Lil get-away" where she could have a break from her mate and just relax. She did end up having 9 babies before she sadly passed. The fry are about 4 weeks now and they are all doing well. I like to turn an air stone on for 2-3 minutes and watch most of them "play" in the current. But I agree, they are a great beginner fish with loads of personality. Thank you guys for the video!
Love the video! I have a number of platies in my 20L that's scaped like Yoda's Swamp in Empire Strikes Back. It's a striking tank and one of my favorites - one of the cats' favorites too. Lots of plants, and there are kuhli loaches and hillstream loaches in there to provide an "alien" look, as well as an assortment of snails. I had a powder blue gourami but s/he wasn't playing nice so I moved it to a different tank. What I love about my platy tank is they can just breed and breed and breed and then I can scoop a bunch out, bag 'em, and take them down to my LFS for store credit! I don't know if there's a way to show a pic but I have a ton of pics of the cats watching this tank like a TV!
I love my Platys and all the variety they offer. I currently have 4 females in a community 29 gallon ( with H. Rasboras, a dwarf flame gourami, 2 Synotontis Petricola cats, and some Otos). Each time I brought a new Platy home they popped out a few baby fry unexpectedly. This last time my grandaughter (eagle eye) saw just one little lone fry. We were able to catch it. And after two weeks in the breeder net it is growing up in a 10 gallon until I know it will be safe to go back in the 29 gallon. We named it Lucky Speckles:) Nice video as always
Things I learned while keeping Platies: 1. Males will chase desired female, but will bully the other females whom he doesn't like. 2. They will eat their young if you don't provide hiding places. 3. They are heavy eaters and are prone to have swim bladder issues, in which they are unable to swim normally, so they might struggle to do so. 4. They reproduce prolifically. You might have a tank of 30 - 40 fry within a couple of months. 5. They are easy going and social, so they need similar platy buddies. They will get along with almost any community fish.
I've only seen my plattys have fry twice, it wasn't a ton of them either but they disappeared as quickly as I saw them. Don't have the space for an additional tank at the moment. They are great fish but it's a shame they eat their own
@@Rancid_Ninja oh yeah, I probably wouldn't want them breeding wildly in that tank anyway tbh, especially since you're not able to set up another tank at the moment. It'd get crowded quick. Love my platies! I’ve found them to be much hardier than guppies as a beginner fish (unless you’re really paying attention to getting high quality stock) and just as colorful. Those neon greens are so pretty, haven’t seen those before! I’ve found that the more plants I have in the tank the more peaceful it is as chasing behavior is really minimized with plenty of cover. Mine have done really well with amano shrimp (which are as big as they are so no surprise), but couldn’t stop picking at my mystery snails. I think they’re just curious and like to mouth things, but the snails started hiding all the time and I had to move them to another tank.
I put my female Platy in with my Cherry Shrimp and she didn't go after any of them either. It did make me nervous though so I came up with something else for her.
I have some blue ones not sure what they are called though. I was told pearls or blue calicos. They are my favorite , I love the blue ones and the dark red ones .
Thank you for this excellent video. I have been keeping all sorts of fish, shrimp and snails for about 10 years now. Someone recommended I try platy's, I got a small group of bumble's today and this covered all the information I needed and then some. 👍
Like the platys, I have puppy platys once a year. They start out in a 5 gal with mom and Brusier the beta. Moving them out after a month and half leaving 4 or so to keep Brusier company. Also the young platys help my 3 cpds feel compfy. I give platys away free to local club members.
Yep! One of the BEST fish! I was a huge fan of them. I tried putting together different colored fish but they never seem to interbreed / mix color? They just keep to their kind.
I LOVE Platies!! I keep them with 1 female Betta, Corydoras, Female Britlenose Pleco and believe it not Cherry Shrimp. It's a 20 gallon tall, very well planted, with lots of hiding places. 6 months I had just 4 Cherry Shrimp and now I have about 50!!!!!!! I also have lots of baby Platies that survive so I rehome them to other fish keepers in my area. Love seeing videos on common fish because it does bring back the joy of keeping them as well as points newbies to great hardy fish. Thank you.
Patties are GREAT fish to keep and are beautiful. They only require simple, but prudent tank and water quality maintenance. I have kept them with many community fish that work well. Great video thank you.
What plant is that what a beautiful tank. BTW I love your videos they’ve helped me out so much and I always learn something new. Thank you for what you do.
Great video. I love platies. I used to keep them, years ago. I'd have some now, but I have nothing I can do with my overflow once they start breeding. My nearest pet store is 73 miles away.
I loved the video but I have two questions, I have been researching mollies, guppies, and platties for about a week now. I have what used to be a 40 gallon (13 inch tall, 40 inches long, and 27 inches wide)“retirement tank” for an old (not sure the age but at least over ten the guy who I got it from had it at least that long) rescue ropefish that was badly stunted (I could tell by looking at the face) at 9.5 inches. But since the fish passed away (2 years and 3 months in for me it just stopped eating and sat at the bottom of the tank like old bettas do) I’m left with an elderly 2 yr old mystery snail and a 7 month nerite snail in this planted tank. I’ve gotten mixed results on how the fish react or don’t to snails would an all female school of 4-5 platties bother the snails? Should I just go with an all (5) fancy guppy female school instead? Or should I try another kind of fish entirely?
I'm on a marathon watching your videos cause I just recently discovered how informative each one of them is! I have a question, I recently bought a pair of blue platies (colorwise they are similar to electric blue rams), so tell me if I breed them can I expect the fry to be all the same color or will they be different? Thanks!
I had platys way back in the 1970s. I need to keep them again. What is the lowest temp you have kept them at? In the olden days 65-70 was ok for the winter and I’m wondering if cool temp resistance has been bred out of them? Nice video as usual.
I really enjoyed this video today! I set up a platy tank last summer. Did my research and wanted fish that would resemble koi in color. I have loved this tank and will likely always keep platys!
Platies have always been my favorite of what I always grew up seeing being called "tropical" fish in my local pet stores, etc. I like sword tails as well but found them to be a little bit nippy so when I stand up my next tank I think it's just going to be Platies, a few cory cats, a pleco. Maayyyyybe a Betta but I'm not sure. I really love "American" cichlids and over the years i've grown incredibly fond of Oscars and even Convicts but they're just a little bit bigger than I want for my next tank. It's tough not to go back to the incredibly personality filled Oscars, though lol. First video i've watched on your channel. I'm going to be binge watching quite a bit.
Thank you for the information. I'm about six months in to the hobby. My community tank is a 30Gallon tall, with a bunch of plants, platy fish, mollies, guppies and tetras. Two of my platy females look pregnant as all get out. I moved them to their own 10 gallon maternity ward. I don't know who's more stressed out, me or the fish.
I know that some of the other common livebearers can do well in brackish conditions. Does anybody know whether this is the case for either platy species?
Great segment since these are the exact fish I plan to get...5 platies, 1 dwarf guarami, 3 pygmy albino corys and 1 rubber nose pleco...these would all go in a flex 15, right? Also, once the tank has cycled which fish should I add 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc...I havent seen a segment on adding fish to a new ly cycled tank
I have a male Betta that lives in my platy tank. He actually loves swimming around with all the platys and has never tried to hurt them. He will flair a little of any of them if they are getting a bit to chummy, but otherwise he will follow them all over the tank a they will do the same. Hasn't messed around with any of the fry either, at least not that I have noticed so far. He is actually more curious of my pleco in the tank because it moves around in such a funky manor. But all he ever does is just sit there and watch the pleco get up to its antics. Personally I think it's a form of entertainment to him. But for other people I would keep an eye on the Betta in your tank to make sure it's not picking on or getting picked on by other fish. I am really lucky with mine because he was a grocery store rescue from a cup. He has some permanent fin damage from his time at the store but it hasn't slowed him down and he has such a laid back personality. I do agree that my Blue Mickey Mouse Platys are very easy to take care of. Feed them every other day. And within the month I got them they have breed many little fish that are now all over my tank. I will say that having a medium planted tank has been a nice thing because it gives the fish and the fry areas to stake out territories and breaks up lines of site so no one fish is being hassled by any other fish. Though the aggression level in my tank is nothing because all the fish are super chill.
A word of caution regarding what you said about Tetras with Platies. I put about 6 Glow tetra's in my Platty / Guppy 29 gallon tank, they are beautiful to look at and live VERY long (going on 2 years plus now), BUT I have not had much in the form of breeding in the time I've had them. Glow tetra's gobble EVERY fry they can, so if you like breeding fish keep glow tetra's out of the tank. I'm presently down to three Glow tetra's and am sadly anxious for their demise. LONG LIVE BREEDING!!!
I Love you guys. Is it Jason and Joanna or Jason and Johanna? A lot of Love here from Sweden. You guys have inspired me a lot, so I am starting up two Tanks right now. Under gravel filters, one with dry start and one with dark start. Both have under gravel filters. I have not been in the hobby for 30 years, but starting up again. I had an under gravel aquarium going for 20 years without water changes. Always perfect water parameters. Only had to top it up once a month because of The water evaporasition. Now it Will be 2 Tanks with under gravel filters, heavily planted, deep substrate. One with Guppies and the other one with Endlers. Always been a Guppy guy. 😘
i just got two mickey mouse platys and they started buddying-up to my Powder blue dwarf gourami❤️ I am pleased. Then, we have the albino corys.. nice combo imo😊 I am going to get one more platy I think, so they can be 3. Also, I chose platys because of your great advice
I have ember tetras in with my platys, and a powder blue dwarf gourami is going in there once he's done with quarantine. Started with 3 platys (1M/2F), now have 11(+-) fry as well!
You could easily add 30 in a 125, but it might be more fun to add maybe 3 males and 10 females and let them breed? If it were my tank I would probably run two tidal 75s.
Platys were one of the very first fish I ever kept or bred. I've been thinking hard about setting up a tank of the little teapot platys. They are so cute! So little space...yet so many fish I want, lol. 👍❤👍
I keep platies with guppys glo lite tetra black neons and some Otos and I’ve had them for 3 months and I only lost 2 black neons and 1 glo lite to the cycle but other than those everything else is thriving
Platies were my "gateway fish" and brought me through all the beginner mistakes and panic moments. I always recommend them to new fishkeepers. Thanks for showing them some love!
Hey man, thanks for a detailed info! Since you're replying please tell me what color of the fry will I get if I breed Pearl Blue Platy and a regular full red Platy? Are they gonna be half-blue half-red or something else? Thanks!
I would love to see Prime Time Aquatics do some step by step set ups of aquariums, you have beautiful tanks and I would love to see how you set them up or give some ideas.
Love your channel guys! I’ve kept platies for over a year now and finally redesigned my tank with real plants and lava rocks. Wanting to give my two remaining platies some friends and I’m so torn on what tank mates to get! All the suggestions seem good but it’s hard to choose and I am nervous about losing any of them. My tap water pH is about 7.3 but I have fluval stratum as my new substrate so it’s dropped to a little below 7 now (hoping it evens out to neutral soon). My average tank temperature is 77 F. Out of the tank mates list what would you go with?
So how many do you keep in 20 long? Not mentioned in the vid unless I missed it. We have 3 currently in a 20 long, with the following....1 beta, 3 danios, 3 red nose tetra, now 1 fire tetra and shrimp/snails
my red wags have done well with my angel fish; temp is 78ish, with some fluctations. 75 gallon, planted. It looks awesome. I've liked the platies more than guppies by far.
Is this the crypts only tank Joanne did recently? I'm hoping to have a platy tank in a 10 gallon. I know you don't recommend it, but if you had no choice, would you max it at 3 or 5? I was considering all males. I was planning on variates because the water will be around 71 degrees.
I just got a 6.7 gallon tank with two male platys. I let the tank cycle for two days before I bought my fish and they're both doing fine it would seem. Im feeding them tetra tropical flakes (which I sort of grind down in my hand before putting in because the flakes are HUGE), and I have added water conditioner for two days. Should I add more conditioner, since this was tap water? Would it be wise to add one or two more platys to the tank? All I have inside is a plastic rock tower for a hide and a lot of plastic plants. Should I look into something better? This is for college and I can't have anything above a 10 gallon tank, and I've already invested $130 into my current set up. What can I do to improve things? Thanks for your help!! - Viri
I probably wouldn’t add anything more. It might also be useful to add Fritzyme 7 to avoid the ammonia and nitrite spikes that usually happen about a week or so after adding fish to a new tank. Good luck!
Can platies handle alot of water movement? I have a 125g with two fx4s. Three of the four nozzles are pointed at the surface though so that kinda dissipates the flow. Just wondering if you think that's too much. They dont seem to be bothered by it or at least none of them have complained yet. Lol. Thoughts?
I never knew they had such short lives 😮😢… I get very attached and will 😭 if any pass away.. I know it’s just a fish, some have great little personalities! ❤
I keep mine in a 20 long with easy plants and I do heavily feed but only once a day and I do a 25% water change once a week and they're all happy and healthy. I've even gotten a dozen or so fry out of them that I donated the majority of to the local pet store and kept two.
Hello! I had 15 baby corys in a separate floating container and there are only two left. Due to the other babies passings I tested the water and it is max hardness. I never thought about hardness bc the adults are fine. Any tips for softening the water?
I haven’t had much luck with my white clouds, I am ALWAYS dealing with at least one fish having wasting disease. I am on week 3 of prazipro treatment and one of my females isn’t getting better. The rest of my fish in the tank, like my bristle nose plecos, corydoras, and hillstream loaches are fine and problem free. And you know what’s weird? 3 of my white clouds are seemingly immune to it, which are fish I got from flip aquatics which arrived as full sized adults. I have 3 full sized adults (2 males and 1 female) and 3 additional females. I think inbreeding has weakened then substantially already, or I am having bad luck sourcing healthy fish.
So yeah I’m looking for alternatives, I completely left that out of my original comment 😂 I think I want to try my hand at Hawaiian variatus or high fin sunset variatus platies.
I keep platies with otocinclus and they get along great. The only problem is that platies will eat any food you add to the tank, making it difficult to provide supplemental feeding for the otos.
Hi. Just wondering if you think it is okay having all female or male platys or if there should be a mix? I like their personality, but may have the optimal tank for breeding (heavily planted with other smaller fish), and am worried about what to do with all the babies.
hey guys, i have 2 platies ive had for about a year now. i wasnt too sure if i had a male and female but from what i could find online it looks like i did. i was wondering why they the female wasnt giving birth at all and even question some people at the petstores about it. a week after i noticed 3 fry, a week after that 4 more, a week after that 3 more fry. each time i found the fry i moved them to their own tank so i have around 12 total. i have guppies and they usually give birth within a few hours or in a day. how come the platy has been giving birth for a few weeks now? the fry from the first week look more colorful and already 3 or 4 times bigger than the ones im finding this week. do they usually take this long to give birth? or is something odd going on?
My males are extremely territorial. I just didn't expect that at all. I've bred guppies for 7 years, I had different color breeding projects but decided to level up and try something a step up. I have no idea! Mine were so territorial that I had to move the boys to a different tank. They do well with the swordtails. Bith are in only same sex tanks
My platy had babies (first time I think only a few) but I see babies at the bottom. I worked hard to get top cover and every time I’ve seen they’re on the bottom hiding (heavily planted tank)
For how many days can a platy keep birthing? I know there’s such a thing as runt of the litter, but 8 days later I’m still seeing very small fry, even though their cohorts are up to 1/4 inch and plump. It’s complicated bc there were two different dams, but one was orange, the other tuxedo.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Even from one mating, or can several matings take place before they give birth? If the latter, do they then keep birthing fry as they get big enough?
I bought 3 platys (1 male, 2 females) recently and within 5 days I've found around 6-8 baby's I'm guessing the rest were unfortunately consumed by them but the baby's love hanging around my false julli corys tho they get scared when they move so suddenly and get really active
I have a group of 4 platies in a 10 gallon (2 males 2 female because when I bought them I didn't know how to tell the difference) with a pearl gourami and a crawfish and there has been no aggressive behavior so far, they have been in this tank for over 3 months at this point and the tank has been going for about 8 months I tried fancy guppies but I had a difficult time with them they would appear fine be eating and swimming around acting normal then an hour later dead
I tried a small group of mollies as well and they didn't make it, so far I have had no casualties with platies so I think I will stick to them and maybe one day get a bigger tank (such as 55 to 120) and get a decent size group and the pearl gourami has never showed aggression and it has been in the tank since I got the tank ready for fish

Thank you.
My favorite fish, they're such little goobers! Thank you for covering them!
Thank you! We have some crypts on that tank.
Great video. I love platies. I used to keep them, years ago. I'd have some now, but I have nothing I can do with my overflow once they start breeding. My nearest pet store is 73 miles away.
You could add a predator fish in their tank to control the population.
@@Stoffmeisterleichen Naah. I'm too much of a softie. But thanks, anyways.
Platys and guppies are both fine with snails. They more or less ignore them. Have fun!
Yeah I learned that the hard way with the Molly. I don’t keep them anymore. They are bullies. I’m getting a 55 gallon tank on the 1st I’m so excited!
I'm on a marathon watching your videos cause I just recently discovered how informative each one of them is! I have a question, I recently bought a pair of blue platies (colorwise they are similar to electric blue rams), so tell me if I breed them can I expect the fry to be all the same color or will they be different?
Thanks!
If they are a pure strain you should get offspring that look like the parents. Thanks for being here!
One of my favorite fish
I had platys way back in the 1970s. I need to keep them again. What is the lowest temp you have kept them at? In the olden days 65-70 was ok for the winter and I’m wondering if cool temp resistance has been bred out of them? Nice video as usual.
I don’t go below 75
Very nice, love how active they are 👌
Wow! That's pretty cool. I don't know if I realized there were so many varieties of Plattys. Dare I say, almost African Cichlidesk.
Time to get some!
I really enjoyed this video today! I set up a platy tank last summer. Did my research and wanted fish that would resemble koi in color. I have loved this tank and will likely always keep platys!
That sounds cool!
Really appreciate this video. I would really like to know if I must keep a lid on a sunset variuatus platys tank?
I do - they can jump sometimes.
Thanks for being here!
Thank you for the info. I just started tis hobby! I love platy fish… Awesome…
Have fun!
At 5:18 you can see a platy rub itself against a leaf? Ive seen my fish do it before are they just itching themselves against the leaf?
Depends - ours was, but sometimes it can mean ICH.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thanks will keep an eye out for ICH on mine but so far appears to just be itchy not ichy lol
I know that some of the other common livebearers can do well in brackish conditions. Does anybody know whether this is the case for either platy species?
They can tolerate salt more than a lot of fish, but with all the line breeding I'm not sure how well they do in brackish water?
Great segment since these are the exact fish I plan to get...5 platies, 1 dwarf guarami, 3 pygmy albino corys and 1 rubber nose pleco...these would all go in a flex 15, right? Also, once the tank has cycled which fish should I add 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc...I havent seen a segment on adding fish to a new ly cycled tank
How do you guys keep long time plants free from algae? Your plants look great…I even clean mine by hand
In tanks less than 20 gallons usually mystery snails. Anything 20 gallons or larger usually has a bristlenose in it. :-)
I love my platys and all the variety they offer. I have 4 females currently in my 29 gallon with H. Rasboras, a dwarf gor
Those were Nice. I have never seen the blue and Green variant here in Sweden. I really liked your blue ones, so Nice.
Love platies. Have several of them in my 120 community at 82F
My 2 first Tanks Will be 20 gallons each.
Have fun! Thanks for being here!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Jason and Joanna or Jason and Johanna?
i just got two mickey mouse platys and they started buddying-up to my Powder blue dwarf gourami❤️ I am pleased. Then, we have the albino corys.. nice combo imo😊 I am going to get one more platy I think, so they can be 3.
Also, I chose platys because of your great advice
The yellows, oranges and whites really stand out! 👍🏻
So many cool colors!
I have ember tetras in with my platys, and a powder blue dwarf gourami is going in there once he's done with quarantine. Started with 3 platys (1M/2F), now have 11(+-) fry as well!
Beautiful fish definitely will share this video 😊
It’s a great beginner fish I had a love affair with them for a while. Then I needed the tank for more super reds!
How many can I start off with in a 125 gallon aquarium and what kinda filter would you recommend I personally like to use sponge filters
👍❤👍
How many platy would you keep together in a 29 gallon? I have 4 ember tetras and 4 galaxy raspbora and a clown pleco as well
I’d start with one male and four females and let them breed!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics and then how many would you let them get up to?
I keep platies with guppys glo lite tetra black neons and some Otos and I’ve had them for 3 months and I only lost 2 black neons and 1 glo lite to the cycle but other than those everything else is thriving
Platies were my "gateway fish" and brought me through all the beginner mistakes and panic moments. I always recommend them to new fishkeepers. Thanks for showing them some love!
They are a great gateway fish!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics You guys are talking about it like it's an addiction.... oh wait...
@@PrimeTimeAquatics How many platies would you have
in a planted 75 gal tank to keep the algae down or at bay ?
Hi I have 4 in a 20 gal tank and they seem to have ick I have been using a fungal medicine but do you have any recommendations?
This will help: ruclips.net/video/RESZo6URK4o/видео.html
How big do Senegal bichirs actually get ? Some sources say 12 inches and some say 20.
I've only kept one, but I have seen them over 12".
I have orange platys and they r fun to watch. Ez to breed and my tank is heavily planted. Once the fry grow up i trade them in to local fish store
Just got our first 3... all girls. Wish us luck 😃
Hey man, thanks for a detailed info! Since you're replying please tell me what color of the fry will I get if I breed Pearl Blue Platy and a regular full red Platy? Are they gonna be half-blue half-red or something else? Thanks!
They might just be a mix the first generation. After that, who knows! 😀
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thanks! We'll see then!
I would love to see Prime Time Aquatics do some step by step set ups of aquariums, you have beautiful tanks and I would love to see how you set them up or give some ideas.
Joanna does that on her channel - The Small Scape. She does all the aquascaping. I’m horrible at it. 😀
My favourite fish by far love these fish.
Most rasboras would love those parameters.
So how many do you keep in 20 long? Not mentioned in the vid unless I missed it. We have 3 currently in a 20 long, with the following....1 beta, 3 danios, 3 red nose tetra, now 1 fire tetra and shrimp/snails
The tank in the video is a 20 long so you could use it as a guide.
my red wags have done well with my angel fish; temp is 78ish, with some fluctations. 75 gallon, planted. It looks awesome. I've liked the platies more than guppies by far.
I have Platys in my tropical fish tank,is 26 c to warm? i was told there was tropical and freshwater platys is that right .
That works well! Right about where they like to be.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thankyou great videos .
Is this the crypts only tank Joanne did recently?
I'm hoping to have a platy tank in a 10 gallon. I know you don't recommend it, but if you had no choice, would you max it at 3 or 5? I was considering all males.
I was planning on variates because the water will be around 71 degrees.
Yep - this is the one! One male and two females in a 10 can work.
Lol. Thoughts?
They are fairly active, but not the best for a high flow tank.
I never knew they had such short lives 😮😢… I get very attached and will 😭 if any pass away.. I know it’s just a fish, some have great little personalities! ❤
Do regular platies breed with variatus platies?
Ya, they can hybridize.
Blue platys are a very under rated fish!
I keep mine in a 20 long with easy plants and I do heavily feed but only once a day and I do a 25% water change once a week and they're all happy and healthy. I've even gotten a dozen or so fry out of them that I donated the majority of to the local pet store and kept two.
I love platys… going to line breed them pond style inside my 50g low boy. Any websites to find some nice platys?
Flip Aquatics has some cool bumble bee platys. I'm not sure who else has them though.
Hello! I had 15 baby corys in a separate floating container and there are only two left. Due to the other babies passings I tested the water and it is max hardness. I never thought about hardness bc the adults are fine. Any tips for softening the water?
The safest way to do it is using RO water and then remineralizing it.
What's the name of the platy that's white in the front and red on the back end ? Thnks
So yeah I’m looking for alternatives, I completely left that out of my original comment 😂
I think I want to try my hand at Hawaiian variatus or high fin sunset variatus platies.
I keep platies with otocinclus and they get along great. The only problem is that platies will eat any food you add to the tank, making it difficult to provide supplemental feeding for the otos.
Can they live without heater??
I owuld keep the temps at least in the mid-70s. Variatus platys can go around 70 though.
Hi. Just wondering if you think it is okay having all female or male platys or if there should be a mix? I like their personality, but may have the optimal tank for breeding (heavily planted with other smaller fish), and am worried about what to do with all the babies.
You can certainly do that. If you have any larger fish in the tank (gouramis or any cichlids) they usually eat the fry though.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thanks so much for the response! I am heading to the store to get some platys now.
Very beautiful 🌺👍
Would Variatus do ok in 6.5 ph, 3dkh and 3 GH?🤷🏼♂️
They would probably do better if the pH was above 7 with harder water.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics well that’s sad to hear :/
Thanks for getting back!!!
hey guys, i have 2 platies ive had for about a year now. i wasnt too sure if i had a male and female but from what i could find online it looks like i did. i was wondering why they the female wasnt giving birth at all and even question some people at the petstores about it. a week after i noticed 3 fry, a week after that 4 more, a week after that 3 more fry. each time i found the fry i moved them to their own tank so i have around 12 total. i have guppies and they usually give birth within a few hours or in a day. how come the platy has been giving birth for a few weeks now? the fry from the first week look more colorful and already 3 or 4 times bigger than the ones im finding this week. do they usually take this long to give birth? or is something odd going on?
That's actually somewhat common for them. Congrats!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics ok awesome! i was hoping nothing bad from it. i check every day or few days for more fry not sure what to expect haha
Thank you for sharing this video 👍⭐😅
So helpfull
- Thank you soooooo much
Such a cool fish
I agree!
What kind of heater do you us?
We hear our fish room so we don’t use many individual heaters. I do have a number of eheim heaters on hand though
How would they do in a 55 with electric blue acara?
Most likely ok.
Can they be kept with electric blue acara? 55 gallon
Probably
My platy had babies (first time I think only a few) but I see babies at the bottom. I worked hard to get top cover and every time I’ve seen they’re on the bottom hiding (heavily planted tank)
For how many days can a platy keep birthing? I know there’s such a thing as runt of the litter, but 8 days later I’m still seeing very small fry, even though their cohorts are up to 1/4 inch and plump. It’s complicated bc there were two different dams, but one was orange, the other tuxedo.
Yep - they can give birth periodically. Not really a set number of days.
How do you feel about keeping platys with zebra loaches?
It can be done.
Can you keep mystery snails with platties
Sure!
