Biggest one I agree with is giving away too much in the trailer. Last one was Abigail for me, killed half the movie because the twist was given away right in the trailer. I still enjoyed the movie for other aspects, however it would have been better if I didn't know the twist going in....
I learned I was being gaslighted thanks to the "woman is disbelieved" trope, so I'm grateful to it as a tool to illustrate unequal power dynamics, raise tension, reveal a gaslighter who's "in on it" (Get Out); but, we also definitely need movies that subvert the trope and avoid it entirely (if you're planning on making the husband eventually get on side and help his wife, why are you wasting time when we could be spending the time doing something more interesting?) my ick: ableism, and using disability and mental illness as a personality trait for a villain: I'm sorry but there's absolutely no excuse for not fully understanding that facial differences, physical impairments, schizophrenia, bipolar and personality disorders are conditions that affect sympathetic humans in 2024
That last one you mention is one of my pet peeves regarding trailers, Vicky. I'll never forget the trailer for the 2019 Pet Sematary which RUIN THE MAIN TWIST OF THE FILM! (rant over) LOL!!!
Yeah the horror remix of a pop song in the trailer is a big one for me. I think at the moment my biggest pet peeve is horror movies that don't seem to understand what the metaphor is their monster represents. I feel like I've seen so many films lately with real messy themes and messages because they just didn't seem to decide what it was they were making a film about.
IMDB is a good source for avoiding some icks. I use it to make sure animal murders/deaths and rape aren't shown in something I'm going to watch. I just quickly skim the parent's guide so I don't spoil the movie, but avoid things that trigger me.
Yeah, the bird thing overdone. Yeah, I'm like, if i see a dog in horror, I'm like, don't kill the bloody dog. Yeah, always stand by your other half. Sexual violence i never find pleasant to watch, but one you see the revenge thing done once already like I Spit On Your Grave. Yeah, double tappimg. I'm like they gonna get up, or sometimes studios think money lets franchise the de thing. Yeah the no signal this whats it all about another thing that sometimes leads into one where it is an unarmed cop arrvies on the scene that is completely obvious and doesn't call for backup and then get the chop I'm like 'Fact lot of good you were.' This the scary take on a good song can sometimes work in trailers bepending on what kind of song. Sometimes trailers can ruin the movie especially if it's a remake and they really are doing something different with the plot I'm looking at you Pet Cemetery (2019) you know if you watch the 1976 trailer to Carrie that basically tells you the entire plot. One of my icks is like i said the cop thing.
I would add to this list those 10 second pre-trailer "grab yer attention" clips that basically show you everything interesting you're about to see in the next ninety seconds.
The non believing of when your partner says spooky shit is happening and it’s worse if said partner is a psychologist and their immediate solution is to put their partner on meds or gaslight them. That annoys me. I understand it’s needed for drama, but it’s everywhere. My other ick is near the end when there’s a third act breakup and you Know the characters are going to assemble again, it’s a massive waste of time for again, drama.
Yes to all of these. I couldn't understand the love for the movie The Watcher. Maike is great but it's an entire "she must be crazy" theme and just... Yawn. Enough.
My god the trailer thing is getting so annoying lol they ruin the movies so much. Esp with horror. Also why tf does THE CAR CONVENIENTLY NEVER START when the protagonist is on the run (my biggest horror pet peeve)
LOVED this video! Discovered you today. HATE the 'animals in horror' thing. It's such a cheap tactic. Really liked the vibe of The Innocents until that awful cat scene.
Can't disagree media👸 and I'm sure I'll agree with all the comments too lol. Top of my head would say the evil baby or pregnant character in danger trope. Anything animal violence is a given. Lastly the infamous losing your balance while evading 😂
'Hysterical woman' is my absolute LEAST favourite trope in all media, its just such a cheap way to build tension. Same for 'unreliable narrator' in Thriller books wich is code for drunk or medicated woman, urg.
I don't think I've ever cared once about having pets in horror, if a pet dies in a film I know it's a film. I'll really never relate to people who hate that, if you can watch a person die, you can watch a pet die.
its obviously not reality vs fiction but moreso an issue of filmmaking that takes advantage of peoples protective instincts. a bit like how its harder for most to watch a child die than an adult in a film. exploiting vulnerability is an easy way to create an empathetic viewer. its a bit like the emotional equivalent of a jumpscare-- hacky and lazy.
Animals don’t need to be in horror films. It’s NEVER necessary. It genuinely enrages me, to the point I won’t watch the film, as I have ZERO faith they weren’t harmed. Also want to add, although it may sound silly, my husband has nightmares where he wakes up and believes it’s real, until he is FULLY awake. This has led to me, checking the whole place, for Pennywise with a lead pipe as a weapon. For him it’s terrifying, and I want him to know that I’ll believe him to matter what. It’s what you do when you love someone.
OMGosh, the animal trope is not cool in my book!!! I'm always checking "doesthedogdie" as soon as a critter enters the screen. Leave the furry babies alone! (Petition sign-ups welcomed!)
My big one is animals. As someone who has many cats, and has lost a few pets in my lifetime, I have a bond with animals that I long gave up having with humans. If an animal, particularly a dog or cat, is harmed in any film whether fake or real (looking squarely at you Marian Dora) I will avoid the film like a pile of dog sh*t. Period. No exceptions.

I'm so sorry you were treated that way. And to everything you wrote? Totally agree. 🙌

About pets in horror movies- Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving did it really well with the cat. That’s how you use a cat in horror movie!!
Similar to the no signal= low battery. CHARGE YOUR PHONE!!!!!!!
There's a suspicious noise in a house, and the person wanders from room to room, turning on NO lights. I yell at the screen every time.

I don’t need any more horror movies where the reveal is they have DID, as someone with DID.
I mean mental illnesses in general, honestly.
