Thank you for the video. I have a Deep Jungle XL Zip and managed to use your method to sew a second zipper on the other side. It looks good and works perfectly. Now I can adjust my underquilt without getting out which makes a huge difference. The one difference in my method was that I basted the webbing tape and figured out how to use a zipper foot to attach the zipper to the webbing. Thanks very much.

Superb modification and sewing skills Simon. I am contemplating sewing a centre zip in to my Brit Army Goretex Bivvy bag and creating holes either end to enable me to thread my hammock through to create a cocoon. Thank you for the inspiration. Paul 👍😊

Look at you MR Fancy Pants upgrading your sewing machine!!! Its a awesome machine, and I get being terrified using it after all those years with a fibular machine. But whats most impressive is your modification ! That my friend, would terrify me! As usual Simon, you are the man, a renaissance man for sure!!

Infact I'm going to show this video to my Mum, she would enjoy this simply because she is always making, repairing or altering things on her Sowing Machines. She has 3 Singers, 1 new, 1 from the 90's and a really old Hand Crank one from probably the 60's and my favourite, I don't get on too well with foot pedals, lead right foot 😂

Cracking job and very practical modification. One of the signs of quality in kit is (in my opinion) VERY good quality zips! I see no point at all in fitting zips which will not fulfill their very simple purpose. Bad quality zips / stitching grrrrrrrr! Thanks for sharing.

Awesome. I do enjoy your videos Si. The underside entry is what put me off the Hennessy but being 6'2 it's size is very appealing. I love my DD Tarp products that I got instead though, currently using there 4x4 Tarp, Travel Hammock and Inflatable Hammock Pad. Again the first thing I did was swap out for Tree Huggers and Whoopies. Keep the content coming mate, cheers us all up in these uncertain times when we can't get out there 😉 Also I'm lucky enough to have lovely neighbour with a Stables that has a Sowing room, used her Machines to put new Zips in my Motorcycle Leathers and other various other Sowing jobs that are too heavy for a home Singer 😁

Nice vid! Not many UK youtubers seem to use Hennessy hammocks, nice to see! FWIW, most Hennessy hammocks these days use a traditional zip on the side like your modification, rather than the velcro split in the middle. They also do a few 4-season hammocks that have a built in double layer underneath that you can stuff with insulation if you want!

Yeah, I like modifying gear too! Thanks for that! I just got a used one too, and having a permanent bug net feels strange and where I live, there’s no bugs anyway, but there are times in some places near by there are bugs and it will be good to have that net back on and ready. Plus, how do you reach over and into your cooler? These also say you can use it as a chair and sit on the bug net, but that ridge-line sorta makes it awkward. With the bug-net out of the way, you and maneuver around it.
Got my continuous loops installed and ditched the suspension cord it came with, but now it’s bug-net time.
I like the bottom entry. It’s so original, even if I don’t use it, I like the fact it has one. I still think it’s way cool.

Nice mod Simon. I have a Hornet Jungle hammock. I absolutely love it and would never go back to tents ever again. Nice to swing in sitting sideways whilst at the fire and keeps your feet off the ground which is much needed after a long hike or many portages with canoe. A hammock is highly recommended. With built in mosquito net a must.

4:37 "it terrifies me!" I have learned many things in my long life from cooking all types of food in many different ways, auto mechanics, hunting big game, fishing both fresh and saltwater, complete computer builds, home and business network setups, etc, etc. But I too am terrified of sewing machines. ANY sewing machine. (maybe because when I was twelve I was messing around trying out my mom's and kinda broke it. Boy was she mad) So I have made a 'dog leash', a 'fire/ash bellows', modified a 'cooking pot' with a hanger, camp bed. fire build, a 'thumbstick' and a couple other things from your videos Simon - HOWEVER - I will leave the sewing stuff modifications to you and my wife LOL Still it is great to see and learn things from you. ATB and will show the MRS. this video - maybe she will modify the netting on my hammock 😁

Great footage and very, very well shot - hammock wise, I started with the explorer deluxe zipper side entry but the zipper just on one side drove me nuts. On hammock forums there’s a lady in the states who performs the full zipper mod for both sides (look up ZQ2Q Hennessy mod on t’interweb) but it was too much money to send it over and get it done, so I did it myself - I now have 2 zips either side to remove the bugnet for an ‘uninterrupted view’....... the Hennessy is relegated to the back garden as it was too heavy even with all the light mods for long trips out - my Brother industrial was the way forward and 5 hammocks and karo step over/under-quilts, axe/saw bags is the way forward. All a bit addictive. just wait until you get an overlocker......

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  4 года назад

Great idea having the second zip sewn in - I’d heard about ZQ2Q from researching on the internet, shame nobody offers the service in the UK. (Although Ginger Scarff would do a sterling job!) 👍

Hey Simon, I've managed to pick up the expedition version of one of these hammocks cheap and think i'm going to try to convert it myself.
I was just wondering if you ever find youself wishing the zip was on the other side?
I seem to often set up on steep banks and since I'll be limited to which end i can put my head (due to the velcro) , I was thinking that exiting from both sides might be beneficial.
I have been considering doing one full zip around most of the netting (both sides) and putting 4 sliders on it so that it can open fully up and tuck into a bag at the bottom, but i may just be overcomplicating things. 😅

I have the same hammock and am attempting the same modification.
Anyone looking to do the same - the link for the zip gets you a size #8 which I think is too big and excessively heavy duty. Simon’s looks like a #5 or a #3. Just thought I’d share this as I work through the project. Cheers.

Sorry couldn't avoid the locker room humour @04:19 ...... first thought was that you were going to reach for a nice flowery blouse ....... but that wouldnt fly in todays pc world. Im terrified of sewing machines, cant help envisioning myself feeding my thumbs through it. Sewing is an invaluable skill everyone should learn to master, even this old goat, great job

Fantastic job Simon, not an easy process, except you make it look easy. Any way what you doing messing around with a hammock when you could've been making my Bucksaw lol. Regards Pete

Have had my first sewing machine for only about 7 weeks but got it in large part because of you and your inspiring self-made gear. Of course I can’t even make a basic COVID mask, but I’m learning slowly but surely. Have you seen or heard of Martexin? A brand of waxed cotton canvas but they also make a ripstop version. Seems great for outdoor kit. Just an idea! Be well
