This movie was one of the few modern horror movies to legitimately scared me. It doesn't help that I fell asleep with it (accidentally) on repeat and so over the course of the night, my sleep patterns had sinister as a background to feed my dreams. Not fun, hahahaha. ^^
Yeah I did the same thing (falling asleep and waking up) I woke up not to long before the end once and my friend on the right of me was watching it. So I woke up watched the last 20 mins (I'd alrdy seen it) but I forgot about the Jump scare from the right side, at the end of the movie. my friend grabbed my hand right as the the jump scare happened and it scared me shitless ! 🤣 the movie is very interesting as well relying less on outright jump scares and more on the psychological stuff like the moving photo on the laptop or the box reappearing or turning on or seeing the children around the main character and being terrified for him or even just the good body language from the actors and the twist of speeding up the timeliness. The music as well is also crazy unsettling imo. Weird voices/noises/unintelligible things that are hard to describe all together it makes it more memorable same with babadook I think?
Fun story about this movie. A few years back, I was at Walmart with my mom. In the movie section, they had labels for different genres of film. In the family section was a copy of "Sinister". I thought that was funny, so I snapped a pic. I posted it to a movie group I was in on Facebook, and someone shared that picture with Scott Derrickson. He thought it was hilarious.
Sinister is one the movies that just STICKS to me to this day. The music for it is also terrifying. It is literally a genuinely well-made horror movie that gives you nightmares.
The first sinister is a top tier horror movie, very happy to see you watch this. And to answer your pinned comment, I mean, Sinister 2 is kind of worth watching if you want to see how ridiculously opposite those movies are.
One thing I appreciated about this movie is that the snuff films are not gratuitously gory. They are integral to the plot and storyline, and while they are horrific and brutal and make my stomach turn, they don't come off as torture porn like a lot of movies do.
It was either the director or co-writer who explained on Twitter/X a few years back that the reason for the lack of gore was they were initially aiming for a PG-13 rating
i remember my jaw dropped when we found out that each family got killed only after they moved out of the previous house, and realizing that as soon as they moved they were totally screwed. what a great movie
Surprising that Marvel wanted to work with this director. Truly scary, I’m in my mid twenties and I reached a point where “scary” movies just don’t have the same effect as when I was young. This is the one that broke me. To this day, this is the scariest movie I’ve ever seen. Also, for some reason I died laughing when Greg mimed picking up the phone and said, “I’ve got some fucked up video tapes.”
Fun fact: the scene of the family being pulled into the pool was real they had divers on standby to give everyone air and the ghoul in the pool was real as well with weighted shoes and holding his breath very impressive movie I’d give you more facts but everyone in the comments already did but loved the reaction ps: #2 is good but won’t compare to the 1st sadly just kinda ties things up detail wise
I was 19 when I first watched this in the theaters and I'm not kidding, I was not able to sleep that night because of this movie. That lawnmower scene still haunts me to this day. Ethan Hawke carried this.
The music in this is so damn well done, too. This one definitely scared me, which is rare these days. Great reaction! Hope you fully recover soon, too.
As a writer, sometimes when you're researching for your story, you can get lost down the rabbit hole, and this movie is like the extreme version of that. His research is literally what gets him and his family killed.
I didn’t think sinister 2 was that awful. It was still fun. But it def didn’t have the “sinister” aspect and feel to it. The first one is a masterpiece
Idk if it's underrated at this point. People know how good it is. Rated the scariest movie in modern history when they tested the heart rate of viewers
This is the last movie I can remember actually being scared by. Watched it at my Dad's & couldn't fall asleep for a couple hours after because I thought Mr Boogie was gonna get me, lmao.
What I really loved about this movie is the soundtrack during the films. The music was so eerie and unsettling, it completely made those sequences for me.
😆 LOL When he finds his son in the box screaming, you raised your arms up over your head like visitors to an amusement park would do when riding a rollercoaster. ❤ 😱 🎥 Fun reaction 👍
I remember seeing this at the theater and the whole auditorium jumped at the lawn mower scene. And the credit music/sound effects are creepy as shit. I work at the theater where this was playing and we ushers would rush clean that theater because the theater lights would slowly go down because there was a fucked up credit cue. We would scream and if we were almost done, we'd just finish cleaning at warp speed. If the theater was really dirty, we'd make sprint to the light panel and turn the lights back up. LOL. Not a fun time!
Greg, I saw this film weeks ago because I was on a Blumhouse marrathon. I haven’t watched much, but this movie scared the heck outta me 😱😳 I still have so much to watch. This movie is REALLY great. I freaking love Ethan Hawke

*first time viewers:* Ah Sinister a ghost movie, a horror movie seen it all before. *viewers after the first shot:* holy sht so that's what I'm in for?
Sinister is still one of my favorite horror films of recent. Scott Derrickson did a great job helming this one, and I'm loving this format of reactions Greg!
So glad you reacted to it Greg! Always wondered y'all's thoughts on the film, the cinematography is off the charts, my favorite part is the Attic scene
If you guys haven't seen Silent Hill then I'd reccomend that! It's one of my favorites! Also, The House on Haunted Hill is my favorite. Famke Janssen is it that one and its great.
20:48 Yup, that's one of the worst jumpscares I know from horror movies. ^^ Takes place number 2 for me. Place 1 is the diving scene from Jaws. Enjoyed the reaction a lot and also your thoughts afterwards. :D
Are the camcorder scene from The Descent and the nurse scene from The Exorcist 3 anywhere in your list? Those two are ranked above the Jaws diving scene in mine. Jaws'scene is effective, but you are already kind of expecting something to happen.
Damn glad he did a review for this movie. Didn’t think I’d see the day. Also, I was nervous and anxious all over again at work but by watching him react to it. Great watch 👏
That lawnmower scene legit had me jump out of my seat in theatres screaming “OH SH*T!” And my navy brothers just started trashing me they did too but I jumped the highest. 😂😂😂
This movie terrorized me for months after watching it the first time and I’ve only watched it maybe 3 or 4 times totally. It may have to do with my beliefs but it’s is one of the scariest movies I’ve ever watched. Greg. You’re the man😭👍🏼
The music chosen for this movie still just…eeughhhhh…I remember the year this came out we burned a CD for our friend who operated a haunted house attraction, it got a lot of play!
Greg... if you love Ethan Hawke (I mean who doesn't) watch what I'd say is his best performance... Predestination which is a 2014 movie about time travel, the movie kind of went under the radar but wow its so good!
I watched this film with some friends and one of them could not make it through the whole film because she said Bagul looks eerily like her sleep paralysis “demon”. She had never seen or heard of the film beforehand either, which made it even creepier. Honestly one of the most intense and terrifying horror films in recent years. As someone who loves horror, the use of suspense, jump scares, etc. are perfect!
Johnny Boi, the second half of Reel Rejects. Johnny hail Marys his reviews somewhat too often but love his insight. Remember most of us lack common sense and John brings that insight to us wonderfully.
There's only one jumpscare that's really cheap, and it's at the end of the movie, so it's not a big deal. In the sea of horror films that fail to be scary, there are only a few classics. This is one of them.

So since we’re getting into the horror genre, i recommend Rosemary’s baby, the thing, or ofc psycho if you haven’t seen them. (The originals ofc not the sequels)
