Hello
I went to see this in theatres with my dad and I really enjoyed it from the opening scene all the way to the end
Yeah i really liked it i wasn’t expecting sth that scary but it took 180 turn and i loved that
I met Zach cregger briefly on the set of wrecked in Fiji while I was the stunt double for Karan Sonis character
This movie is the definitive example of how going into a movie knowing almost nothing about it can be hugely beneficial.
YES I LOVE that the trailer didn’t show all of the good parts and shocking twists and turns!
Exactly. Went into it totally blind!
@@missioncodez I agree with you. The first part before Justin Long appearance was 7/10, after him show up was 3/10 (the actor was fine, but screenplay sucks). So my final score is 5/10
I went into watching this movie totally blind and a huge disappointment as the result..
That's the only way to do it sometimes
The thing that made me so sad about Keith's character is he was trying so hard not to make Tess uncomfortable. He's fully aware he is the more threatening party, and is trying to come off as unthreatening as possible. But he's clearly at a loss of how to handle the situation and it just comes off as awkward. Those first scenes with Keith and Tess were very well-written and acted.
I swear the good people in movies like this always die lol.
A totally opposite interpretation that I really like though is that Keith had actually planned on assaulting her all along (or possibly thought of it after the first night). There's SO many weird aspects to his behaviour as well as the overall situation that I totally missed on my first watch, but became glaringly obvious the second time. Plus, it fits with the whole theme of outward personas hiding evil within.
We judged him too much1😮💨😪
@@CaatsGoMoooo I thought so too. But turns out he was a good guy. It's situations like this which make people have serious trust issues and I hate that.
@@CaatsGoMoooowhat are the super weird parts that became clear your second watch? Honestly he reminded me of myself with some of the ways he acted since I’m very socially awkward so I could see how he was just a good person who acted weird. I also think it’s much more interesting for him to be a very awkward weird person who seems evil but is just a good guy rather then him being a weird awkward guy who seems evil and is evil. Plus I think it’s a good contrast with the theme of outward good hiding inward evil if he’s outward evil (or just weird vibes) covering up inward good
I love how at night, the neighborhood looks like it could be a poorly lit suburban neighborhood and during the day you see just how bad it really is
Also, I got the likes to 666 😂
We thought the night was scary, but it was even more scary now that we can see the neighborhood. The director/writers were definitely good with playing with the audience.
@@brianng8350 absolutely, definitely need to check out the interview with Zack Cregger on the Double Toasted Interview channel!
Is that a real thing in America? It looks like a warzone.
@@taags yes it is. Takes place in Detroit which is in the state I live in and I can confirm it is that bad
Love how the biggest plottwist was Keith being innocent 🤣 ngl, Keith was kinda sweet but yes still creepy. Was a bummer he died, but thank God I watched it till the end
His character was a great example of subversion. He played the character really well treading the line between kind and creepy, and casting Bill Skarsgard was a smart move since he typically plays creepy characters.
Love that the movie suggests that the Barbarian isn't the inbred woman living in tunnels, but it's instead Justin Long's character.
AJ may have been a waste of oxygen, but he didn’t have what looked like decades worth of “trophy tapes” of his crimes.
Frank is the Barbarian.
@@cambion_entertainment A candidate for sure! In my book, the 2 characters (AJ and the father) are a reflection of each other. The father's time has past, AJ represents society's threat today, imo.
It’s ultimately Frank who is the Barbarian because he is the reason for everything bad in that Airbnb
The title also refers to the street the house is on. Apparently people who live on Barbara street are called Barbarians.
I love seeing the homeless man scene from the beginning again, because the first time you watch it you’re like “fuck he’s going to try rape her or something horrible” and even his delivery sounds aggressive. Second time though you realise that his delivery isn’t “aggressive” he’s genuinely pleading with her to get out of the house. Great little touches.
I got it the first time I saw that scene, because it is a repeated trope in movies. Make the homeless person look suspicious and at the end make him help the main character and then die helping the protagonist.
If he wasn't an stranger running towards her screaming agressively and instead ran towards her and call her maybe one time or ask her to wait so she could asses that he didn't represented a threat then maybe she would have listened. But the way he went about it, justified that she felt scared and threatened.
@@nightnaughty it wouldn't matter if he went calmly. He's a homeless man every woman hates and is scared of him
@@arcanevi4477 That's not true, women don't hate or fear the homeless, what women fear is creepy aggresive men, that's what he did and look like.
If he call her from a distance in a calm not creepy tone, explain what was going on and warned her she would have listened and wouldn't have been scared. When he helps her later to scape he warns her more calmly and she listened, since there's no need to explain what she just saw.
@@Sunny-sc5vq exactly same
I also love that Keith was not a bad guy😅i was actually shipping him and Tess together, but that movie took a whole 180 on us😂😂
@@eliktm4624 ah man you are right😂😂😂😂 I’ll change it for a 180😂thank you
@@cedrickpelletier5861 Haha, his comment confused the shit otta me for a second until I realized you typed 360 not 180. Haha F
@@vordt4139 ahah yeah, we all understood but something was definitely not accurate 😂😂
Keith wasn't a bad guy but he was another guy who didn't listen to Tess...none of the men listen to her and she's the only one who survives. I love that Tess constantly puts her worry for the men ahead of her own safety, adding to theme of motherhood
You mean 190 turn bro😂😂😂😂 I was suspecting him but then I realized he’s a good guy💀
I watched this in theater when it first came out and it surprised me in many ways.
The film constantly plays on your suspicions and curiosity. The moment you see the secret room you already know what happened but aren't sure how extreme it is.
You don't know if she's the only person/thing down there even when the film ends.
It's honestly one of my favorite horror films that's released over the past 5 years or so. I want to see more from the director.
He HAVE to do more movies 🔥
Bill Skarsgaard is a phenomenal actor. He was amazing in 'The Devil All the Time'. He approaches things in an old Hollywood kind of way yet a tad updated to modern times.
He figured it out. 🦎😊
That tape measure scene had me dying laughing. Justing Long killed it in this movie (along with everyone else).
One of my favorite tidbits about this movie is that when Zack Cregger originally pitched it to people in Hollywood, everyone hated his script for being so chopped up and different. But eventually he found a producer who had some clout who also loved the story, and then that producer somehow convinced Disney to fund it...which saved the film.
Disney? Really?
@@michaelfitzgerald38 Yup! I was genuinely surprised too!
@@itsnotme777 it was picked up before Disney took over 20th century. I don’t think Disney would’ve allowed it if they legally had the chance.
This is a 20th century holdover film.
I really like how they set up Keith's character. He does so many things that makes you feel like he's the big bad. In all honesty I personally still wouldn't have been in a house with a random guy. You can never predict a good or bad person
Right tho
I felt so bad for what happened to Keith.
Who posted the airbnb listing?
@@PhatBoySteven property management that AJ hired. He takes shortcuts so it makes sense he hired incompetent property management.
@@drssupreme3332 but they said they havent had a tenet in months
I lowkey felt bad for the monster at the end 😭😭
You know there’s been something rattling in my brain ab this movie , of why she killed Keith but kept the other two, and I had a theory while watching this reaction. When she killed Keith, Keith was pulling on Tess trying to get her to do something she didn’t want to do. Maybe she killed Keith because it reminded her of when Frank was assaulting everyone down there. She probably was just trying to protect Tess 🤷♂️🤷♂️thoughts?
Yes! That’s why she killed the homeless man too. She’s sees all men as danger , as barbarians.
@@lillustpotionwhy would she not immediately kill AJ then?
@@izzycusson3017 because he fell in the baby crib, so she must've thought that he is also her baby
After watching y’all review this movie, I’m catching a lot of good call backsI didn’t initially pick up on. Like, how the writers referred back to the conversation Keith and Tess had about how, if the tables were turned, Keith would have been able to walk into the house with Tess with no fear- then later in the movie you’ve got AJ finding this unbelievably disturbing underground room and tunnel- and instead of running out, he grabs a tape measure and just starts moseying through without a care in the world. Such a good, tight, horror film. Loved it!
All 3 sections of the movie were so different. The transition was kind of rough, but they all work on their own - a romance, a comedy, and a period piece with the orgin story.
I went into this movie blind. Had a movie night date and he suggested this. All I knew was it was an original horror movie. One of the funnest experiences I’ve had.
Noticing certain patterns with these actors:
-Following Bill Skarsgard down a sewer, tunnel or basement equals certain doom
-When Justin Long co-stars in a horror movie with a female lead, he ironically plays the more feminine role, and is bound to lose his eyes by the end
-Richard Brake's characters are always the types you'd avoid in reality 😂
This was one of the best times I've had in the theater this year. Perfect level of dread. And constructed so well.
Same. Sooooo good. Saw it 4 times at the movie theaters.
The cut to him searching up the square footage absolutely killed me 😂😂
That was definitely sad about Keith since he wasn't even the jerk in the movie, I wanted him and Tess to hook up.
There's a lot of really great interview stuff about this but Zach (the director/writer) said he was reading a book and there was a chapter about small things men do that should be red flags to women and he wrote the whole opening and he got to the part when they're in the tunnel and Keith was gonna SA Tess and he said "this sucks" and didn't wanna write so he had a creature come in and bash his head in.
Wtf??? Don't spoil Keith for me.
This movie is available on *HBO MAX* btw incase you didn't know!
Also available on Disney +
@@bookgirl0869 i m confused ....April fools in October ?
@@iam6424 HBO Max and Disney+ share much of the same content as they are owned by the same company.
On Europe I think it's on Disney +
@@iam6424 In Canada, it's on Disney+ right now
My friends and I had a long discussion after watching the film, about “Who really was the Barbarian?” We loved it.
I’ve been thinking about it too! I think it’s that scumbag man in the basement I’m not going to call him a “father” because that’s a insult to real fathers and potentially Tess for killing the inbred lady?
And I won’t call AJ a barbarian he’s a rapist, end of.
So glad you guys liked this! Most fun I've had with horror in a while. And reminds me that while I love spooky season and the genre, it's often a source of frustration for me, but then something like Barbarian comes along and reminds me of that love all over again.
This was sooooo good. I can't believe I saw it 4 times at the theaters.
@@ReviewJunkee I saw it 4 times as well lol. High five! :P
@@XxXDestroyer I didn't want the film to end. I wanted more twists and turns. Also, I reviewed the film on my channel too through hand drawn illustrations. Feel free to check it out =)
So glad this movie is finally available for reaction videos. This movie is amazing and perfect for first time watches! Loved your reactions! The movie is definitely one of the best horror films of the year, and my personal favorite. The first act is so effective at presenting itself as one thing and getting you locked in before pulling the rug from underneath you. I love how the second act shows AJ mirroring all the beats and scenes that Tess does in the first, but creates a hilarious contrast with how he reacts to the situation. And I totally agree with you guys on Tess and why she’s a great final girl. It’s easy to discount her for not so smart decisions, but ultimately she is smart, compassionate, observant, and cares.
This is one of the best of 2022. Saw it 4 times at the movie theaters.
The tension in this was so good! It had a old school feeling.
It fills me with so much joy that a movie like this can get made in 2022. One is the best movies of the year. Loved it!
Haven’t seen a movie that good in a while
Yeahhhh. This is one of my faves for 2022. Saw it 4 times at the movie theater. Wayyyy better than SMILE.
@@VonJay I don't get the hoopla about SMILE. This was 100 times better.
@@ReviewJunkee heard about it but never saw it. Not planning to
@@VonJay I was a tad disappointed. It got such amazing reviews. I reviewed SMILE and BARBARIAN on my channel as well through hand drawn illustrations. Feel free to check it out.
This one was of the biggest surprises this year. I expected another generic horror, but instead got this extremely well shot and well made film. It has great blend of horror, suspense, and comedy. And the way they use the lighting and sound design here are fantastic.
Its kinda generic ngl
@@Asine Maybe in some aspects, but overall it was a pleasant surprise full of misdirection, and unlike most it was really well made and shot.
@@XxXDestroyer it lacked depth, i am never going to think about this movie again, the first half was really really good, the second half felt like it was written by a mediocre writer.
some mediocre writer.
Had a lot of fun with this movie. Loved Justin Long with the tape measure.
Justin long is one of the best horror actors of all time. Fav movie is jeepers creepers with him 💯💯
and it turns out blind like in jeepers creepers loooool
saw this in theaters opening night, and have been hoping you would do a reaction!! can't wait to see what you guys think about this crazy ass movie
I like how they make AJ do all the things that make a horrible person. That move on the watertower had It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia vibes haha
The pacing of this movie is really unique and well done at the start u just jump right into the bad situation and shit gets weirder and weirder and then u jump to a brand new character releasing the tension and u learn more about the plot and then u start slowly jumping back into the fuckery with interesting flashbacks and more tension building again
I felt the same after it cut to Justin Long. Goes from creepy dark to sunny driving and you’re like what?? Wish Bill had stuck around longer though. Guess he wasn’t a worthy baby lol.
For the first I felt sorry for the monster in a horror movie
Yeah I actually felt bad for the Mother too, she just wanted to take care of her children
The real horror is how bad Detroit's police department is.
I was waiting for Keith to be the killer all the way up to the point where he got his head bashed in.
I really want more horror movies like this and Malignant
I completely agree. Barbarian and Malignant are 2 of the best recent horror movies. We definitely need more like them.
Top three horror films of 2022:
1) Barbarian
2)Black Phone
3) Smile
One of the best movies of the year. That final shot is just perfection.
One of my favorites of the year. Saw the premiere at the theatre without seeing a trailer and was COMPLETELY blindsided
I don’t know if I’m weird for this feeling about the movie but: I felt so much genuine sadness for the “mother”. It’s such a good movie.
I did too
I loved her! To me, she’s my favorite character & I want some of that milk! Obviously, Inbred Long Titties Tammy (my nickname for “Mother”) got the Super Soldier Serum in them knockers. It made Tess able to jump higher than she should’ve been able to, take a bullet & keep walking & then fall off a building & survive. I sneezed, threw my back out & then hurt it again trying to reach for a tissue.
*GIVE ME THAT MILK!!!*
🍼👩🏽🦱
@@Vampwars Dude i dont think you want that abomination, incest, chemical soup milk in your system lmfao drinking breast milk from someone who's not linked to you dna wise is already a wild thought but the added horror of it being from the titties of a super duper duper mega ooper incest daughter is even more fucked not to mention WARM AND IN A DIRTY HAIRY BOTTLE. idk how tess drunk that shit for weeks.
Oooo i was waiting for you to react to this. This movie had one of the best uses of misdirect I’ve seen in years, especially with the casting. Very grateful to catch this in a theater when I could. Hope Disney gives this a physical release soon.
This movie tripped me out! I didn't know how to feel when it ended...so crazy
3:19 that lighting 🤌🏾 the way they play with light throughout the film is good but having pennywise step back into the shadow is great. So many good shots in this.
I went into this movie blind knowing very little about the plot. And it just blew me away. Barbarian took me in so many directions and scared me a lot! The mother is absolutely creepy to me!! 😬
The Jane Eyre book was a great subtle detail.
Something about Justin Long getting his eyes taken out is catchy.
This is one of the best of the year and how to make a unique and thrilling film with twists and turns. Tess And Keith would've been a cute couple and I want another movie with those actors together. Hope to get more horror movies with this director because he knows how to do this genre well.
I think the main reason this movie works is the fact that the 3 characters are all well developed.
I loved how the trailer felt like a different movie altogether. When I watched this, I wasn’t expecting this at all. It wasn’t a bad thing. I actually enjoyed this.
Watched this in the cinema yesterday in a full screen. Good times.
Yeah it was nuts. Kept me fully stressed out but fun too.
Nervous laughter, genuine laughter.
I had a feeling that the guy who tries to get her to not go in the house wasn't a scary as he first seemed.
I spent the whole time begging Tess to stop opening doors and just walking into the darkness.
Justice for Keith!
Yess!! One of my favorite new horror films this year. So happy you guys are reacting to it here lol so twisted and fun. Enjoy!!
This movie is bonkers in the most unexpected way. The jarring cuts to new characters and storylines. The jarringly uncomfortable camera angles that go on in the tunnel on Justin Longs character. Hella triggering my claustrophobia in the tunnel. The way they work with the flashlight in the tunnel is absolutely insane.
The real horror of the man doing all the things to the women is played so well. And you get the perfect amount of information to be able to paint the picture in your mind without having to completely see what’s going on. The rape room reveal is enough to captivate your mind to anything that relates to it further along the movie. It’s honestly a perfect horror movie and top 3 of this year for sure
Also the ending song right after the gunshot was another very clever touch - "Be My Baby" by The Ronettes 🤣
2022 has been a good year for the Horror genre
the ending was absolutely unrealistic, boring and cliche, the first half was cool and exciting
@@shinobi4317 not exactly trying to be realistic mate
@@lukess.s you the director or writer?
the best horror movie I saw in a while. I remember being SO confused when the movie suddenly cut to this bright colorful scene and justin long driving in that car. I needed a few minutes to make sure that I didnt changed movies somehow. Really great film
the fact i just finished watching this movie and then I open RUclips and there is a reaction from u guys ...wow
Ditto 😀!
I grew up on WKUK, so I was super excited to see what magic Zach Cregger could bring to life. He did not disappoint! This movie was amazing.
After watching, I pulled up old WKUK skits. Look up the grapist skit. The last 5-10 seconds of that skit is the main premise of this movie 😂
saw this in theatre honestly one of the most intresting horror films ive seen for awhile messed up but expected with a horror film, the ending had my jaw dropping didnt expect that glad to see u guys liked it by far one of the best horror movie in recent years i think.
very trippy
This movie went from possible slasher to possible paranormal, to possible monster, to kidnapping crazy man to inbred freak!! Loved it!!!
All the promotional material revealing very little about what the film was truly about made the experience of watching and seeing it all unfold amazing! Absolutely loved how disturbing and sometimes funny it was!
I just finished watching it a minute ago and came here to tell you react to it and here it is....😍
The whole bit with Long and the tape measure really just sealed the deal on me really loving this film lol
This Barbarian film reminds me of a 1995 film called Castle freak a very underrated horror film
Watched this the other day after my husband watched it without me lol. We both went in not knowing anything about it. Was really surprised. I also like that at first, you think it's like something supernatural, but then no, it's just a poor woman that was basically trapped down in those tunnels with a monster that raised her to be like that.
The part where she's trying to get help from the cops though. Oh man. It's like yay, she's getting help but obviously you know something is going to go wrong, but just the way it all went down where they just didn't believe her at all. You just get this sinking pit when they leave her.
Zach Cregger the director is actually part of The Whitest Kids You Know group. Pretty awesome he did so well on his first movie.
So freaking funny when Justin Long throws her off the water tower LOLOLOL
I truly adore you two. I dont have any roommates or friends in town that enjoy the same movies, so getting to watch one here and there with you guys is fun. Makes it feel like Im not just watching movies alone with my cats all the time haha
The first half of the film is incredible, truly a masterpiece in terms of suspense and buildup and had me on the edge of my seat, but the second half just kinda falls flat for me, there's way too much going on at the same time and all the nail biting suspense just goes out the window once the woman mutant thing appears. I feel like if they had stuck to a simpler story, perhaps just a third occupant in the house and maybe not revealing who the person was until later, or maybe not revealing the third person at all instead of that whole plot with the serial rapist and his daughter.
Love y’all movie reactions John and Greg reactions are awesome 👍🏻
Was really hoping you’d react to this I went in completely blind and oh boy it was a treat
That movie is appart of the four 5 stars of this year imo (The other three are Top Gun Maverick, Everything Everywhere all at Once & The Batman)!
Great taste! Those movies were all phenomenal for what they were trying to do, and in their own respective ways.
Justin Long was amazing in this. Truly one of my favourite and real performances ai have seen in a horror in a long time
Gotta say that this is a fun way to watch a movie. It's condensed, and we get to watch it with you guys.
Gets points for-OMG-surprises, great tweaks to the classic “girl and boy meet inbred psychos” story arc…and Justin Long is always in interesting movies…
I just watched this film a few days ago. And my initial reaction was like f the person who recommended me this f-ing movie! Ha but letting it sink in it’s one of those horror films that make you want more of these type of movies. The pacing, storyline and execution of the whole movie was amazing.
Also the eyes thing they did to Justin long was an awesome throwback to jeepers creepers
:D *"Keith was innocent the whole time"*
Everyone did such a great job. But Justin Long! Damn, what an awesome performance. One of his best by far.
I really want a part 2 cause it's driving me crazy thinking about wat that guy Frank was up too.
my favorite movie of the year out of the 85 2022 releases I have seen. LOVEDDDDD ITTTTT.
Sara Paxton is married to the director and Kate Bosworth is dating Justin Long, so I'm assuming that's how they got them to do the voice cameos
Keith deserves justice😭😭
I watched this, Haunt, and Run Sweetheart Run yesterday, great choices for Halloween
Great reaction video! I watched an interview with this director from Korey Coleman. He talked about how much of a pain it was to pitch this to producers and studios, everyone turned him down
The first trailer just showed the first half of the movie. But than they released a trailer called Justin Longs New Movie it’s contains lots of spoilers because it came out after the movie was in theaters. It would be a great trailer reaction.
Yesssssss I’ve been waiting for a reaction!!
Fun fact:
Zach Cregger, the co main to Trevor Moore on ‘Whitest Kids You Know’ wrote and directed this movie.
First Jordan Peele and now him jump from sketch comedy to making quality horror/thriller movies!
Also, RIP Trevor Moore! 😔
This movie is like the goonies meets don't breathe meets Mama
I absolutely loved this film! I went I into it blind and I was blown away. 🤘
14:05 I have never had a physical reaction to a horror movie before but that face Greg made and putting his hands up to his face was my exact reaction to that scene 😭
Only mildly enjoyed this the first time I watched, but on another viewing I had so much more fun with it. Loved the camera work.
Literally just watched this last night and it became one of my top 3 horror films of the year…imagine my surprise and excitement when I wake up and see your reaction to it! Love you guys, keep it up with the content
Just watched this the other night. Absolutely horrifying lol
Bro this movie gave me so much hope for horror genre! When executed right, horror is the best of them all!
I love that y'all were just as paranoid as I was the whole time 🤣🤣
I loved that this movie was simply different than a lot of other movies. It has is flaws, but the things it does well outweighs the things it could’ve done better. Not amazing, but a pleasant surprise to be sure!
I really like how the monster/mother wasn't the worst thing down there.. the real (worse) monster was Frank.
Man I was even tearing up at the very end I was so surprised it did that to me
